Business Studies

Assessment is through two written exams, each worth 40% of the final mark, and a controlled assessment unit worth 20%.

Unit 1 – Starting a Business - Marketing - Business Operations

External written examination: one hour 30 mins (short structured questions and extended writing. 40%. Unit 1 exam - 23rd May 2018

Unit 2 – Developing a Business - Human Resources - Business Growth - Finance

External written examination: one hour 30 mins (short structured questions and extended writing. 40%. Unit 2 exam will be at the end of Year 12.

Unit 3 – Planning a Business - Controlled assessment. 20%

Child Development

Parenthood, Pregnancy and the Newborn Baby exam sat in May/June of Year 11 worth 30%.

The Development of the Child (0–5 Years) exam sat in May/June of Year 12 worth 30%.

Investigation Task completed in Year 12 worth 40%.

Digital Technology (previously called ICT)

Unit 1 – Digital Technology

External written exam on Thursday 17th May 2018 – lasts 1 hour.

Weighting: 30% of overall GCSE

Year 11 Digital Technology students must be learning their theory work as

homework throughout the year (the pupils have a theory workbook for Unit 1

which they access on Google Classroom and also have an etextbook with Unit 1

notes in it).

English

Year11 students, who are studying English Literature, will complete an exam

worth, 30% of their GCSE, in June 2018.

English Literature students will also complete a Controlled Assessment Task, worth

20% of their GCSE, in November and December of this year.

All pupils will complete a Controlled Assessment in English Language, worth 10%

of the GCSE, in January and February of 2018.

All pupils will undertake study, to prepare them for English Language examinations

in Year12.

French

All 4 skill areas for French will be examined at the end of Y12.

Unit 1: Listening 25%

Unit 2: Speaking 25%

Unit 3: Reading 25%

Geography

Unit 1: Understanding Our Natural World

Unit 1 exam – May/June 2018. Exam: 1 hour 30 minutes. This examination paper is worth 40% of the overall GCSE qualification.

Unit 3 – Fieldwork

Field-trip for data collection – May/June 2018. This task will be worth 20% of the overall GCSE qualification (exam will be completed

in Year 12).

History

Year 11: Unit 1 exam in June 2018 “Life in Nazi Germany 1933-45” (60% of GCSE) Year 12: Unit 2 exam in June 2019 “Northern Ireland 1965-1998” (40% of GCSE) There is no controlled assessment. All assessment is in examinations. There is no

foundation tier. Pupils will be tested regularly throughout the year.

Home Economics

Unit 1: Food and Nutrition worth 50% - Exam will be completed in June of Year 12. Unit 2: Practical Food and Nutrition worth 50% - Controlled Assessment will be

completed throughout Year 12.

Irish All 4 skill areas for Irish will be examined at the end of Y12.

Unit 1: Listening 25%

Maths

Year 11: One exam assessed calculator based module to be chosen from M1(F),

M2(F), M3(H) or M4(H), to be taken in June 2018 and worth 45% of overall GCSE

grade.

Year 12: One Completion Test to be chosen from M5(F), M6(F), M7(H), or M8(H), to

be taken in June 2019. The Completion Test is split between calculator and non-

calculator and is worth 55% of the overall grade.

There is an opportunity in January of Year 12 to repeat any module taken in June of

Year 11.

Media

This qualification is linear. Linear means that students will sit all their exams and submit all

their non-exam assessment (controlled assessment) at the end of the course.

Assessments

Media One Written Exam 1 hour 30 mins 84 marks 35% of GCSE

Media Two Written Exam 1 hour 30 mins 84 marks 35% of GCSE Non Exam Assessment

A choice of one of five annually changing briefs, set by AQA 60 marks 30% of GCSE

Religious Education

CEA GCSE exam in May (2018) of Year 11 – it is worth 50% of their total GCSE.

OCN NI Level 2 Certificate in Religious Studies. In order to achieve the Level 2

Certificate learners must complete a portfolio of work for 9 units.

Muiredach Cross Award – continuous assessment based upon a range of school

and community activities.

Science (Double Award)

Key date for Yr 11 : Wednesday 21st – Friday 23rd February 2018 : module exams.

Double Award Science is worth two GCSE’s and covers the three aspects of Science –

Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

There are three module exams, each worth 11% of the GCSE, sat in November (from 2018),

February and May of Yr 11.

Coursework element worth 25%

Coursework preparation will take place through practical work within the course, and will be

externally examined. There will be a practical examination to be completed in school

between January and May of Yr 12 based on practical work done over the GCSE course, and

a written paper requiring knowledge of all practical work completed in class.

The three terminal exams, sat in summer of Yr 12, are each worth 14% of the GCSE.

There are two tiers of entry – foundation and higher.

Students are entered into foundation or higher tier in Yr 11 based on their Key Stage 3

performance. There is the opportunity to move between tiers, based on results of module

exams. A module score of 55/60 in the foundation tier paper is needed to enable

progression to studying at higher tier.

Science (Single Award)

Both exam and coursework are assessed in Year 12.

OCCUPATIONAL STUDIES

These are practical subjects; allowing students to learn in a hands-on occupational environment.

Each unit focuses on work-related tasks, enabling learners to make informed decisions about

progression opportunities and career choices.

Learners are given the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and skills in a

context directly related to employability. Occupational Studies are accredited at NQF Levels 1 and 2.
