Welcome

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to the Year 11 team which involves parents, carers, Year 11 mentors,

subject teachers, Ms Green and myself.

This is such an exciting, challenging and crucial time for our Year 11 students. They

recently experienced some excellent work placements at the end of Year 10 and

returned to the Academy ready to continue with their successes, to build on the

solid foundations they have already laid for themselves and to begin the final part

of this journey.

The students have made a brilliant and encouraging start to Year 11, full of

positivity and promise. They are working with their teachers and are focussed as

well as keen to maintain a confident and competent attitude to learning. We

encourage them to maintain these high standards throughout the academic year.

We will do whatever it takes to ensure that their learning, expectations, well-being

and daily experiences are of a high standard and quality. We expect our students

also to attend regularly and punctually, to work with us, to co-operate and to

communicate with us at every given opportunity.

Already we are committed to creating a year 11 ethos which reflects our year

group, our goals, ambitions, high expectations and our individuality.

We are really excited about their future here and I look forward to being a part of

the partnership. Promises have been made by Year 11 students as well as staff,

with the expectation that when we reflect on the year, that we would have not only

have successfully achieved our promises, but that we would have surpassed them.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Carmen K. Patel

Head of Year 11

Unit 2—Performance Exams

There are two performance exams that make up 60% of the final GCSE Grade. The marks are awarded to

students based on their commitment, effort and focus during a planned 6-8 week rehearsal process and their

performance on the night to the audience. The performance on the night needs to show that students are

able to use a wide and detailed range of performance skills to communicate effectively to the audience. The

key to success in the performance exams is the rehearsal process. The assessment criteria demand a well

rehearsed piece of theatre. One of the performance exams will be a piece of theatre created by the students

from scratch, the other will be the students’ interpretation of a script.

Unit 1—Written Exam

The written exam is the students’ chance to communicate their practical exploration of Drama. There are 3

sections in the written exam:

Section A— Four short answer questions about practical work the students have personally taken part

in during the GCSE.

Section B— Two essay style questions about a play the students have studied from a practical

perspective.

Section C— An essay style review of a live piece of theatre the students have seen and studied

during the course.

The key to success in the written exam is keeping a detailed “Actor’s Journal” of the practical work, theatre

trips and play studied as these notes become the students’ revision notes. Quality of Written Communication

and the confident use of the language of theatre are essential to achieve the highest grades.

Websites & additional learning resources
