SECTION B: DESIGN ASPECT (25 marks)

Read carefully the Thematic Situation presented below. Refer to this theme for Section B and Section C.

Theme: The Advertisement Industry Advertisement & signage companies can help promote a brand by producing

graphic products like signs, posters, merchandise, shop displays and other bespoke (one-off) products, designed to impress. Advertisement involves mainly: Custom-made signs and displays (mainly 3D) and 2D print or digital

advertisements. Mechanisms, electronics and light functions are sometimes also used to increase the impact of such designs.

9. The following preliminary sketch was drawn by a fellow

designer to explain to a shop owner how a 3D, illuminated

(with A.C. mains voltage, powered light), ARROW SIGN could

look for a teenage clothing shop. Such sign is about 1m wide.

In the space below answer the following THREE questions:

a. Design a new 3D sign using another popular symbol that teenagers are

familiar with. (E.g.: @, #, the thumbs-up symbol etc.). Your design needs to

be in 3D that includes ANNOTATIONS and LABELS which describe the features

of the illuminated sign. The symbol needs to be made of ONE shape or text

character only.

b. Add illustrations that show how such a sign can be hanged to a wall.

c. Include details for the type of light that this sign will use.

(6 marks)

d. Write down an initial DESIGN BRIEF for the design and make of the shop sign

suggested in question 9a.

10. The shop owners liked the suggested sign and now the idea needs to be

researched further to list down a cost for the sign.

a. COMPLETE the following web diagram by adding THREE other bubbles,

expanding on important aspects (specifications) of the sign design. An

example has been given as a starter.

(1 mark x 3 = 3 marks)

b. Research was carried out with various stakeholders to help in deciding what

was needed for this sign to be more effective. Mention TWO stakeholders you

would consider in your research:

c. Table A shows feedback data collected from a target group about the

suggested design:

Which of the above feedback is (mention name/s from data in table A):

i. Not useful to improve the design: _____________________________

ii. A properly-referenced research data: __________________________

iii. Takes into consideration the users: ____________________________

iv. Suggests a change in the electronic system:_____________________

(½ mark x 4 = 2 marks)

d. Another source of research considered was the internet and search engines.

In the search engine below, write down a search entry including at least

THREE keywords that could be entered to obtain a good selection of images

that show ideal signs for this age group:

(1 mark)

e. The shop owner decided that the sign was to become the image of their new

advertising campaign. In fact, they are analysing 2 ideas for further

promotion of the shop using the sign symbol. However, they also want to

know how every suggestion effects the environment.

Thomas: “…I would like that the sign illumination would change colours to be

vibrant for teenagers!”

Andrea: “It would be cool if the sign could have that old vintage look/style as it

matches current trends” (age 18, Surveyed on 20th December 2018, Sliema.)

Martha: “…this sign is too plain and adds no value to the shop whatsoever”

11. Studies have shown that customers remember of this shop every time they see

this symbol in everyday life. Another customer research shows also that

customers like the shop sign and would even buy a similar sign for their own

bedroom if they had the opportunity.

a. Mention TWO different specifications that the new, smaller consumer product

sign (for home bedrooms) would have unlike the full size sign.

Section C: Technology Aspect (55 marks)

In a particular village, a traditional coffee shop wants to improve and change its

corporate identity. In fact, they engaged a designer to re-design their branding including

their logo.

The coffee shop wanted a one-off, innovative sign to be hanged outside the shop.
