Year 11 A-Level Biology Summer Bridging Work
The objective of the summer work is to prepare you for the first unit in the OCR A A-Level Biology course. The first unit covered in Year 12 is Module 2: Fundamentals of Biology and starts by looking at the structure of cells.
By the end of these activities you should be able to:
• Identify the organelles in eukaryotic cells • Outline the key functions of the organelles • Compare the structural difference between plant and animal cells • Compare the structural difference between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
Work set by Mrs Emmott. If you have any questions then please email me
Activity 1
Watch the videos below describing the structure of cells and complete the tasks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLJdRs5w4u4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUJryLNKScg
Use the information from the videos and diagram to label up the structure of the animal cell below
Complete the table with the letters and names of the organelles
Use the information to label up the structure of the plant cell below
Activity 2
Describe three structures / organelles that are present in generalised plant cells but absent from animal cells.
Activity 3
Use the information below to make revision resources (flash cards/mind map) to learn the functions of the organelles.
Activity 4
Answer the questions below
Activity 5
The diagram below shows Staphylococcus, which is a prokaryotic cell. Label parts A to D
The following table compares some features of a prokaryotic and eukaryotic animal cell. Complete the table on the next page by using ‘present’, ‘absent’ or a short descriptive phrase. The first has been completed for you.
Activity 6
Compare prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. Describe 3 differences between the cells and 1 similarity.
