SEMESTER 1 OUTLINE: TRUTH& FICTION
This semester we will investigate whether texts can present us with truth. Through exploration of short stories, a documentary, advertising and a class novel, we will judge whether a constructed text can be fiction-free.

Short Stories
Reading Challenge: explore short stories dealing with issues or ideas important in reality. Looking at the way these stories are constructed, we will consider ideas they promote.
You will also have the opportunity to create the opening of a short story that works within a chosen genre and reflect a real-life issue or idea.

Short answer comprehension (in class); moderation. Reading.
Task 2 (Wk 4)
Write the exposition to a short story that suits a chosen genre (in class with a 100 word outline). Writing.

Advertising and Propaganda
This unit of work is intended to explore the way that advertising and propaganda has an influential role in society.
Evaluatehistorical and contemporaryexamples of these texts, and analyse their means of impacting on the target audience.
Task 4 (Week 10) Multimodal Production
Using digital tools, create aManifesto Statement. Submit an analysis of your campaign ad and speech(150 words). Speaking.

Term 2
Novel Study
Our class will study a chosen novel that engages with ideas about a historical context, or about society in general.
Your task will be to conduct a close study of how the novel presents its ideas and the views that it promotes through its narrative structure.
Task 5 (Wk 3)
Response to an extract taken from the novel (in-class); moderation. Reading.

Examination
The semester will end with an examination. Class time will be allocated to revision; you are expected to develop effective study habits through our whole school REACH program.
