Year 10 Food Technology
Year 10 have been studying foods for special occasions and part of their assessment was to decorate a child’s birthday cake. Many of the students used a variety of cake decorating techniques including use of fondant and butter icing. There was a range of designs that students had created themselves. Year 10 Food Technology students have done an exceptional job on their cakes.

Tom Kemp Cup - Under 16’s Girls Hockey
The Parkes High U/16’s Girls Hockey Team participated in the Tom Kemp Cup in Bathurst on Friday August 31. Teams from Parkes, Orange, Bathurst, Lithgow, Kelso, Blayney, Cowra, Wellington and Molong entered the cup in three divisions. The Parkes girls played exceptionally well in cold wet conditions in Division 1, beating Bathurst and Orange in the round games. They then went on to face Lithgow High in the final, with both defence and attacking players having phenomenal performances. At full time the score was locked at nil all, however due to Lithgow being higher on the table they went on to win the game. Mrs Morrissey, Parkes High coach was extremely happy with the performance of the girls on the day. “The girls played so well and for them to make the final having six Year 7 students in the team is just awesome. I would like to say congratulations to Gab Wright, Lori Ross and Ella Morrissey who have now retired from U/16’s hockey and say a big thank you to Mrs Sharon Deen Moody for driving to Bathurst and Kyle Thompson for umpiring in the rain” Mrs Morrissey said.

Capture, Connect and Contribute
Welcome to this edition of the newsletter. Amongst the many things that have been happening around the school. I begin with the disco which was held last week. From all accounts the event which celebrated wellbeing and connectedness of the student body was well received and enjoyed by staff and students alike. I must extend a generous thank you to all staff involved including Miss Barber who, along with the SRC organised the event. Praise For Our Students: I have also had the pleasure of receiving an email from Sonia Buerckner from Condobolin in regards to our students participating as referees in a recent Touch Football Gala Day. Our students participation was acknowledged as being, engaging and helpful. The email concluded with all the students being a credit to our school. Well done to all those students who attended this event and represented themselves and our school with such pride. Farewell: This term will see Miss Ashley Oxley leave us for a position on the South Coast. I take this opportunity to thank Ashley for her work as Relieving Head Teacher English and also for the work she has done at our school as teacher, colleague and mentor to many students. I would like to wish her well in her new position and all the best for her future endeavors. Colour For Cancer: Our school captains in Emeline Lavaka and Gordon Richter are colouring their hair for cancer. The two students have done much for our school and again they have come to the fore in volunteering to have their hair coloured to support Canteen. Well done Emeline and Gordon. You can support this worthy cause by donating online or attending the family event on Wednesday 26 September, see page five for details. HSC Preparations: Our Year 12 students have completed their Trial Examinations and I encourage each and every one of them to make the most of the expertise of our teaching staff as we head towards the preparation period for the HSC Examinations. This is a testing time for parents and students alike, and staff as well, and together the anxiousness and uncertainty of the next few weeks will be alleviated as we work together in the preparation of our students for their respective HSC Examinations. I encourage parents and students to make contact with Miss Crain the Year Advisor or any of our staff at anytime to alleviate any concerns or issues that may arise. PBL Reloading: I attended a PBL reloading session at Parkes Public School this term, along with several of our Year Advisors. We are hoping that with the knowledge gained from this event that PBL will be more intensely focused on as part of the school landscape. We are a PBL school and it is hoped that we can look towards operational aspects of the school like our school timetable to carry a designated period each fortnight in which we focus on explicit teaching of PBL and mindfulness for all students 7-12. Study Program 2019: Miss Dawson, our School Librarian has kindly volunteered to run our TPOT study skills program from 2019. Miss Dawson has been working on revitalizing the study skill handbook for all students in Years 11 and 12 and the program, a most successful one for all senior students will be based around a designated area of the library. The purchase of new furniture and book shelving conducive to creating a study area. Student Behaviour: My report concludes with a request to students to maintain a respectful and responsible attitude to all their undertakings. More recently we seem to have an issue with general swearing in everyday conversations. Students are reminded that we need to be respectful of each other and that general swearing in a “normal” conversation is not necessarily appropriate nor acceptable. NEWSFLASH I was contacted by Deb Dibley from Hunter River High School regarding an action that had been undertaken by HRHS in raising some money for schools affected by drought. I am very pleased to say a significant donation has been donated to our school and we are currently working out how best to distribute to our families. A big thank you to the school for such a kind and generous gesture, and positive ending to a report being written at time when our families are feeling the pinch of the prevalent drought conditions.

Mock Crash
Prior to attending the annual Mock Crash presented by NSW Road Safety on Friday August 17, Year 10 students participated in pre lessons to discuss issues on our local roads. The pre-lessons were conducted by Ms Melanie Suitor, Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer for the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shires along with Senior Constable Daniel Greef from Parkes Police. Ms Suitor and Senior Constable Greeves delivered a vast array of knowledge about road safety in particular gaining your provisional licence and penalties and demerits allocated to provisional and full licence drivers. Students were also provided with multiple strategies to prevent injury whilst driving. A highlight of the lesson was the opportunity for several students to participate in the alcohol and drug simulated goggles activities which showed very clearly that a person under the influence of substances would be affected behind the wheel. All Year 10 then attended the Mock Crash event and experienced its emotional and very real portrayal of a teenage crash scene.
Students involved in the Mock Crash activities are pictured above with

SBAT– School Based Apprenticeship Or Traineeship Parkes High students are having the fantastic opportunity of getting real life work experience while studying for their HSC. The Department of Education are continuing their dedication to offer Year 10, 11 and 12 students the choice to gain valuable skills and experience through a School Based Traineeship or Apprenticeship. School based Traineeships and Apprenticeships are more than just part-time jobs – they are a great way to set students up for the career they want whilst they are completing their HSC. Parkes High currently have eight School Based Traineeships and one School Based Apprenticeship at a variety of local businesses including; Parkes KFC, Terry Brothers Homemakers, ANZ Bank Parkes and National Australia Bank Parkes and Bogan Gate Public school. The trainees attend school four days a week and one day at their work place, while gaining a certificate two or three qualification. This year sees the Parkes High students studying certificates in business, administration, floor technology and education support. Parkes High has seen over thirty students successful in completing a School Based Traineeship and look forward to continued partnerships with the Parkes local business sector and many more traineeships in the future.

Volunteer Work Placement Program
During the recent Parkes Show, a number of students from Years 9 to 12 took part in a volunteer work placement program. Students spent time assisting the Parkes Show Society to help and undertake a range of activities. These included organising displays, working in the horse ring, assisting in the office and presidents rooms. This valuable program has been happening for over 10 years providing students with knowledge and skills that they can take with them into the work force and helping to give them an appreciation of volunteering in their local community.

Everyone2day Attendance every day that the school is open for instruction is a legal requirement and a major responsibility of parents/carers. Do not keep your child away from school for the following reasons as they are not considered to be acceptable:
Birthdays
Shopping
Minding other children
For routine check-ups or care such as hair cuts
Minor family events
Medical and other health appointments for your child with specialists such as dentists or doctors should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays
Regular appointments (i.e. private swimming or music lessons during school time) which require students to leave school early
It is important to understand that the Department may take further action where children of compulsory school age (6-17) have recurring numbers of unexplained or unacceptable absences from school. Some of the following actions may be undertaken.
Attendance meetings and compulsory attendance conferences - Parents (and sometimes their child) can be asked to go to a meeting with school personnel and other regional officers. The aim of the meeting is to help identify strategies to support the child and family. Other agencies may also be invited along to help, if parents agree.
If the school and other regional officers have tried to help improve a child’s attendance, without success, parents (and sometimes their child) can be asked to go to a compulsory attendance conference. The conference will be run by a trained conference convenor. The aim of the conference is for the school, parents/child and other identified agencies (“the parties”) to further identify the issues which are impacting on a child’s attendance.
The outcome of a compulsory attendance conference is for the parties to agree to undertake certain actions to improve the child’s attendance. These actions are written in the form of undertakings.
Applications to the Children’s Court – A Compulsory Schooling Order. Legal compliance can be sought through an application to the Children’s Court for a Compulsory Schooling Order. The aim is to assist a family and/or child to address the issues which are preventing satisfactory school attendance but has the added enforcement of a Court’s powers.
Prosecution in the Local Court - If all attempts by schools and regional support staff fail to improve a student’s attendance, action can be taken in the Local Court and the result can be fines up to a maximum of $11,000.
