ENGLISH SCHOOLS TRACK & FIELD & SOUTH SHROPSHIRE COMPETIT ION

It's been a really busy and fantastic two weeks of athletics competitions. On Monday 14 May we took four teams to the first round of the English Schools Track & Field Championships.

The Junior girls (Year 7 & 8) achieved 5th place out of nine schools, but it was the Intermediate (Year 9 & 10) who did particularly brilliantly - The boys team won and the girls were 2nd to Shrewsbury High School.Congratulations to both teams on a fantastic result!

The girls team has now been invited to the Midlands Final on Tuesday 12 June. Just to put this into perspective, this is only the 2nd time in the 15 years that Mrs Humphreys has taught at William Brookes that we have made it to this level! An awesome achievement!

We are waiting to hear if the boys have qualified for the next round as selection is due to the number of points achieved and not necessarily the final position.

This week a number of our athletes competed in a multi-events competition with great success:

Will Ross (Year 9) came 7th in a Pentathlon competition, Hester Whittaker (Year 10) achieved 4th, Caitlyn Renshaw (Year 10) achieved a fantastic 2nd in a Heptathlon and Toby Jones (Year 11) won an Octathlon!

Both Caitlyn and Toby will represent Shropshire in a Regional Final in Stockport in June.

All teams competed in the South Shropshire Schools competitions this week, which we have hosted in school.

The following results were achieved by our students:

• Year 7 / 8 Girls achieved 3rd place• Year 7 / 8 Boys achieved 6th place• Year 9 / 10 Girls achieved 3rd place• Year 9 / 10 Boys achieved 5th place

COUNTY SCHOOLS SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last Wednesday, 16 May, ten William Brookes students qualified and competed in the County Schools Swimming Championships. Many new personal bests were set during a very successful evening.

The following students were medal winners:

Joe Ritson (Year 7) achieved a silver in 100m Breaststroke; Ben Ritson (Year 7) achieved a bronze in 100m Butterfly; Manali Ware (Year 10) achieved a silver in 100m Butterfly and a bronze in 100m Freestyle, setting new personal bests in both her events; Louix Tziortzis-Foskett (Year 10) achieved bronze in 100 m Freestyle; and Henry Willis (Year 11) achieved silver in 100m Freestyle and a bronze in 100m Breaststroke.

Congratulations to all swimmers!
