ARTIST REFERENCE RESEARCHTASK ONE:

Your task is to complete 2 Artist Analysis for your recent 2D and 3D artist

which you have been reproducing in lesson.

It is critical that you are able to find basic information online, therefore

you need to know the artists name- this can be found on the reference

sheets you were provided when beginning the reproduction. (You will

need to contact your teacher if you are unable to find this information).

You need to access the Artist Analysis from the online curriculum – see

the next slide for detailed instructions on where to find the guidance

sheet.

You should type this up into a word document. You must ensure you

SAVE your work so that you are able to access this in weeks to come.

ENSURE YOU COMPLETE ALL 5 SECTIONS OF THE WORKSHEET TO THE

BEST OF YOUR ABILITY.

Abby Diamond is an American illustrator and visual

artist, producing abstract artworks predominantly

featuring wildlife and nature. The artwork I have chosen

to reproduce is the ‘Neon Northern Pygmy Owl’ as I

think Diamond’s colourful characterisation of a

somewhat plain bird is playful and unconventional.

The artwork is composed of a focal central bird, the

Northern Pygmy Owl. Although the bird is central, the

owl’s side on positioning and eye line creates an

uneven right balance to the composition. I would

descried the appearance of the Northern Pygmy to be

abstracted and stylised by the use of haphazard

brushstrokes, linear marks and exotic colours. Diamond

has chosen to keep the background minimal, a stark

white surround to intentionally draw the attention

centrally to the owl. However, there are bold colourful

brushstrokes extending and bursting from behind the

bird. I think the extension of colour frames the owl

successfully and this is an element I will consider as I

develop my artworks.

Diamond has a recognisable wet media experimental aesthetic

for capturing wildlife. She is known to use a range of medias;

pens, inks, watercolours paints and dyes. She overlays painterly

marks with refined lines and marks using contrasting black finer

or harmonious coloured fine liners. I have found when

replicating Diamond’s style, it is a challenge to create

haphazard painterly marks whilst remaining in control of the

application of paint media.

I have selected Abby Diamond’s as an influence for my

project, as her artwork displays harmonious colour combination

which contradict the reality of the bird’s natural tones. The

‘Neon Northern Pygmy Owl’ artwork is of particular interest, as

the subject matter relates to my theme ‘Woodland Creatures’.

Diamond’s work has similarities to the artwork of Claudine

O’Sullivan, both artists abstract the natural colouring of the

animals. However, O’Sullivan works primarily in colouring pencil.

As I continue to develop my portfolio, I would like to merge the

style of both these artists. I intend to do this by expanding my

use of media and editing my own photographs by

experimenting with colour. Once I have completed a series of

photo edits, I can work from these using a combination of

media; dyes, watercolour, coloured fine-liners, colouring pencils

and black biro. Furthermore, I will extend my artist research to

gain further reference to inspire the backgrounds of my designs.

CERAMIC/ 3D RESEARCHTODAYS TASK:

You should now produce a minimum of a 6 page PowerPoint presentation showcasing your

ceramic/ 3D Artists Research.

6 PAGE POWERPOINT SLIDE GUIDANCE

• Title Page (1 PAGE) – Your Name, your project title and an IMAGE of your 3D Artist

Reference. We would also ask you brainstorm key subject matters which could feature in

your 3D final sculpture.

• Ceramic Research (5 PAGES) – 2 Ceramic/ 3D images per page (Good quality and large

scale).

• Analysis – Add guidance notes explaining why you choose these artworks to influence your

final ceramic sculpture.

You need to set up your PowerPoint correctly so this can be easily printed on your return to

school.

On the top bar select ‘DESIGN’ and then select ‘SLIDE SIZE’ and finally select ‘STANDARD’.

USE THE NEXT TWO SLIDES AS EXAMPLARS! YOU WILL NEED TO REPEAT THE SECOND

SLIDE A TOTAL OF 5 TIMES.

This artwork shows inlay to form the layering of

the feathers, this is a textural technique which

could influence my final piece.

Anna-Wili Highfield, Cotton Paper Sculpture.

I have included this research as I think I would

like to include multiple bird forms in my final

sculpture.

DESIGN CONCEPT: TEACHER EXAMPLETODAYS TASK:

THIS WILL BE A 2 WEEK DESIGN TASK- YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO

PRODUCE 6 CERAMIC DESIGNS CONCEPTS/IDEAS.

CONSIDERATION FOR YOUR DESIGN CONCEPT ARTWORKS:• You need to create 6 A5 (Half of A4) ceramic designs informed by

research you undertook last week.

• Consider the materials and equipment you have available – my

examples use; tea-bag stain, pencil, biro, fine liner, sharpies &

posca pens.

You could also use; colouring pencils, coloured fine liners /pens,

highlighters & paints.

• You could add labels, to explain your design concept – do this

thoughtfully.

• Begin by considering how your sculpture will stand; will it have a

base?

• Ensure your sculpture will not be unevenly balanced or top heavy.

CERAMIC/ 3D RESEARCHTODAYS TASK:

THIS WILL BE A 2 WEEK DESIGN TASK- YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE 6

CERAMIC DESIGNS CONCEPTS/IDEAS.

CONSIDERATION FOR YOUR DESIGN CONCEPT ARTWORKS:Composition – consider whether your composition so far is working well – does it lead the eye?

Does it produce visual impact?

Colour – consider your use of colour carefully – does it ‘sit’ with the rest of your project? Does it link

well to the artists you have studied?

Tone – how can you use tone to make your designs look 3D?

Media – how are you using different media in your work? Does this show skill? How can you use

media to show textural or decorative elements?

WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO BEGIN?As a minimum you will need 3 sheets of A4 paper, a HB pencil and a Black Biro.

You may have additional equipment at home you can use, please ensure you use this equipment

in a controlled manner.

GCSE COURSEWORK PORTFOLIOCOURSEWORK AMMENDMENTS:

It is critical that you continue to improve your GCSE coursework

portfolio where possible. If you need more guidance please

email your teacher with a clear questions/description – you

could take photos of your work to aid us in helping you.

[email protected]

[email protected]

This is also a good opportunity to expand your portfolio;

additional drawings, additional artist studies, additional research

boards, additional photographs and digital edits…

The slide that follow is an exemplar portfolio from a current YR10

student. You should use this as a guideline for the standard and

amount of work that you all need to achieve.
