Welcome

Welcome to our 2014 New Artists Presentation Concert marking the opening of our exciting 30th Anniversary Season. Tonight’s concert is the first glimpse of our wonderful new artists, selected earlier in the year at the Public Final Auditions at Wigmore Hall. They are already creating quite a “buzz” with concert promoters around the country, and their future diaries are starting to look encouragingly busy. Anyone wishing to book them should contact us sooner rather than later!

To arrive at this presentation concert, these artists underwent two gruelling audition rounds before appearing in the Final Auditions in May. The juries across the rounds included some of our most seasoned and experienced performers alongside senior figures in the music industry. Of course, technical excellence and musical understanding were a given throughout the process. However, even more importantly, our jurors were asked to listen and look out for qualities that suggested to them a unique international potential as well as evaluating which artists they felt would benefit most at that time from the valuable, intense and personal management service which YCAT offers.

YCAT is a unique charity, offering selected artists a vital opportunity to forge solid and structured career foundations. Tonight’s artists are embarking upon a really rewarding journey and we look forward to sharing in their unfolding careers with immense excitement. Details of how you too can support these artists are available in the enclosed leaflet and I encourage you to join our thriving and enthusiastic family of friends and donors.

PETER MOORE trombone

In 2008, at the age of 12, Peter Moore became the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician Competition. He studied with Philip Goodwin at Chetham’s School of Music, and with Ian Bousfield. In 2014 he was appointed co-principal trombone of the London Symphony Orchestra, a role he will perform alongside an Advanced Performance programme at the Royal Academy of Music.

As a soloist Peter has appeared with the BBC National Orchestra Wales, Northern Chamber, the Polish Chamber Orchestra at the Rheingau and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festivals, and at the Slide

Factory in Rotterdam. In 2010 his recording for Chandos of the Gregson Concerto with the BBC Concert Orchestra was released.

Passionate about pushing the boundaries of the trombone and bringing it to a wider audience, Peter has given recitals at major venues and festivals including Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, The Sage Gateshead and Proms in the Park Belfast. Further afield he has toured extensively in Australia and New Zealand.

JONATHAN WARE piano

Born in Texas, Jonathan Ware studied at the Eastman School of Music, The Juilliard School, and at the Hochschule für Musik ‘Hanns Eisler’. He won the Pianist’s Prize at the Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation Song and Das Lied Competitions, and now divides his time between the UK and Germany.

Sought after as a song accompanist and chamber musician recent concerts include Alice Tully Hall, Wigmore Hall, Carnegie’s Weill Hall, Lincoln Center and the Ravinia Festival. He has toured North America with mezzo-soprano Tara Erraught, and

appeared at the Französischer Dom Berlin and Rheingau Festival with baritone Benjamin Appl.

Passionate about the song repertory, during the 2012/13 season Jonathan was co-artistic director of a festival in New York devoted to the performance of the complete Schubert Lieder.

Engagements this season include the Berlin Midsummer Festival, return visits to the Samling and Meistersinger Academies, and recitals at Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room, Saffron Hall and The Sage Gateshead with Peter Moore and Benjamin Baker.

ALEXANDER ULLMAN piano

Born in 1991 in London, Alexander studied at the Purcell School and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Leon Fleisher, Ignat Solzhenitsyn and Robert McDonald. He now embarks on his Master’s at the Royal College of Music. He has won 1st Prizes at the Liszt (2011), Lagny-sur-Marne (2013) and Tunbridge Wells International Competitions.

Alexander has given recitals throughout Europe, Asia and America. Recent highlights include the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Archive Nationales (Paris), Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Copenhagen) and La Jolla Arts Festival

(California). In 2014 he undertook a European tour collaborating with the Dover Quartet.

As a concerto soloist he has appeared with the Philadelphia, New Jersey, Fort Worth and Montréal Symphony Orchestras, the Oxford Philomusica, Southbank Sinfonia and Budapest Radio Orchestras.

Engagements this season include return visits to China, Italy and the USA. He takes part in the Montreal Chamber Music Festival and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany.
