Producer Kristian Krempel and “Blair Witch Project” writer and director Dan Myrick have joined forces to convert a 17,000 square-foot warehouse in Ybor City into a production studio and sound-

stage. The studio founders want to make Ybor City a more collaborative place not only for filmmakers, but also for artists and musicians as well. The filmmakers also have two projects in the making – a web series slated to begin filming in early fall and later a feature length film. In addition, Ybor’s Cuban Club will host the iHorror.com Film Festival this October, which has previously been an online-only event.

Twenty-five local high school students participated in the Future Leaders in Planning program organized by The Planning Commission. After a streetcar ride from downtown, the students met YCDC Ambassador Wallace Reyes and Brenda Thrower, YCDC Staff Member, to tour several historic sights in the district, including the Ybor City State Museum’s staged casita (pictured) on 9th Avenue.

Thank you to everyone that participated in the 2019 YCDC Spring Photography Contest. In total, 193 photos were submitted! The contest focused on five different themes ranging from Events, Transportation, Interior Spaces (both Commercial/Retail and Residential), Abstract and Conceptual. All photo contest photographs are now available for viewing on the YCDC Facebook page.

Archway LightsThe suspended decorative lighted archways above 7th Avenue have become iconic elements of the Ybor City National Historic Landmark District. Originally installed for the 1990 Centennial Celebration, they were never removed due to their charm and popularity. Today, the archways remain a distinct feature that impresses the thousands of annual visitors coming to experience the rich history, culture, and lifestyle of a lively walkable historic district. The poles and illuminated decorative arches will be replaced through a partnership with TECO in 2020.
