WHAT WE DO
• Building the capacity of coastal communities to better manage the marine resources on
which they depend for a living, through training and mentoring.
• Conducting research and monitoring of coastal resources, including coral and reef
fisheries surveys and assessments, and socio-economic surveys.
• Assisting the coastal communities to plan and implement community-based reef
restoration.
• Promoting the development of a sustainable and responsible marine ornamental
fisheries through training of fishermen and coastal communities in ‘best practices’.
• Facilitating private sector engagement through development of trade chains that use
‘best practices’;
• Providing an information source of baseline- and series data (such as harvest data).

Sustainability IssuesOld issues but which still have not been solved completely:- over-exploitation;
- Habitat degradation and loss due to destructive fishing practices;- Threat of extinction of target species due to selective over-harvesting;
- Lack of traceability;
- Lack of responsible business transactions – lack of trust among the players;
- Unequal share of benefits and responsibilities within the trade;
- Lack of awareness (e.g. of long-term consequences of destructive
collection techniques and over-harvesting, releases/introduction of non-native species);
- Limited Data and ecological Information
- Emerging issues:
Ocean AcidificationIncreased in water temperature and Unpredictable weatherAlien and invasive species

Research and Monitoring
• To assess and monitor the
status of reef-fisheries
populations targeted for
marine ornamental fisheries
and coral reefs condition;
• To assist local stakeholders
to develop No-take zone (e.g.
Penuktukan) and
conservation program
• To maintain harvest data forreef fisheries

Collecting and handling at
Collectors level
• Various collection techniquesare available for species specific
collection;
• However, destructive collecting
and fishing techniques are still
practiced :
• Use of chemicals: Although it is
illegal, the practice of capturing
fish with chemicals such as
cyanide is still occuring in someparts of Buleleng district.
