Camp Yavneh has it all... The educational, recreational and social programs combine to create an ideal world for a Jewish child to spend the summer. Yavneh has long stood for Jewish spiritual survival, fosters the love and appreciation of Jewish tradition and values, while at the same time provides a supportive place for kids to grow. The importance we place on Hebrew language and Israel is felt daily by our campers. Children come together from many communities and build friendships that will last a lifetime. Yavneh embraces all campers, old and new, and bonds are forged that stretch across generations. Many of us who were Yavneh campers a generation ago, are filled with pride and delight as our children carry on the Yavneh מסורת (tradition) and will, we hope, pass it on to the next generation. We ap-preciate you entrusting your child’s camp experience to us, and we look forward to spending another wonderful summer together at Yavneh!

Over the next several months, you will receive additional details regarding opening day procedures and preparations for camp. In the meantime, please feel free to contact us; our contact information is in the end of this handbook.

The Educational ProgramWe are very proud of our Educational Program which instills a love of Judaism and Israel in a unique way, different from standard religious classes. The classes are held in an informal setting with our experienced faculty and all campers participate daily. Classes are grouped by age and religious/day school background. While studies are taken seriously at camp, the atmosphere is relaxed and fun. We encourage you to speak with your child about the educational program at camp and to encourage their active engagement and participation.

In addition, Bar/Bar Mitzvah tutoring is available. Please refer to the tutoring request on the camper profile form.

Mail and EmailEveryone loves getting mail – especially at camp!

We encourage you to write to your children as frequently as possible. While campers love getting snail mail, kids can receive one email every day, printed at 10 a.m. Mail and email is distributed every afternoon, except on Shabbat. Due to the large amount of incoming emails, we ask that you keep your emails limited to one page; no attachments or photos, please. We are sorry, but outgoing email from campers is not available. Please make your emails meaningful and newsy -- the kids really look forward to them.

Campers are required to write letters home twice a week, so please send self-addressed, stamped envelopes or postcards for your child’s use. This is highly encouraged for younger campers. Outgoing mail from Northwood is notoriously slow so don’t be surprised if you receive 2-3 letters on the same day. If you are concerned by a lack of detail in your child’s letters please contact the Rosh Banim - boys’ head counselor (Meir Deutsch - [email protected]) or Rosh Banot - girls’ head counselor (Davida Amkraut - [email protected]). Please email Meir or Davida after June 20th.

Bunk numbers will be given out on opening day. Please address your child’s mail as follows:

Packages from HomeIt is fun getting stuff sent from home such as newspaper clippings, stationery, sports cards, pictures, etc. Please use padded envelopes, and remember that space is limited in the bunks. Please note that campers may only receive packages in the padded envelopes! Because of our friendly critters in the New Hampshire woods, food is not allowed in the bunks and gum is not allowed in camp. To ensure compliance, all padded envelopes will be opened. Campers who celebrate their birthdays at camp may receive one package for their birthday (no food). These too will be opened and checked for food before being delivered.

Kerem may only receive packages on their birthday similar to the rest of camp.

Telephone and Other CommunicationWe do not allow campers to make or receive calls (except on their birthday). If you have any concerns or questions about your child, please feel free to call the camp office at (603) 942-5593 or email Davida Amkraut (Head girls’ counselor [email protected]) or Meir Deutsch (Head boys’ counselor [email protected]) In a non-emergency situation Davida or Meir will return your call within 24 hours. Debbie Sussman (Camp Director) is also available to answer your questions - [email protected]

Summer BirthdaysCamp birthdays are fun! Signs, cards and a special gift enhance their celebration. In addition, our chef makes a beautiful cake for your child’s bunkmates to share. Your child may phone home on their birthday for a 5-10 minute phone call. Please email the best time and phone numbers to reach you to: Davida or Meir three days prior to your child’s birthday.

ShabbatShabbat is a day of rest and joy. A traditional Shabbat is observed starting with Kabbalat Shabbat, a wonderful meal and Zemirot. Shabbat is filled with ruach as we separate ourselves from weekday activi-ties. Please do not call camp from 5:00 pm on Friday through 9:30pm Saturday. In case of a critical emergency, please call 617-620-8384 or call the Northwood police department at (603) 942-8284 and they will contact camp.

DismissalsThe camp administration reserves the right to dismiss any camper for violation of camp safety rules including alcohol or drug use. In such an instance, parents will be notified immediately. Should a camper arrive late, leave early, or be sent home for disciplinary or any other reason, no refunds will be made.

Personal and Other ChargesThe following items are included in camp tuition: kolbo/canteen treats, laundry, yearbook, camp trips, two t-shirts. The following items will be charged to your account to be settled at the close of camp: Prescription medicines not covered by your insurance and health related co-payments, glasses repair, toiletries, life guarding books and fees, UPS shipping or other fees or items particularly re-lated to your child. At registration you put in a certain amount of money for your child’s canteen clothing purchases. These purchases are automatically deducted during camp. You can add to your child’s canteen account by going into your campintouch account.

Graffiti and Property Damages Camp facilities are maintained so they will last for many years. Rarely have we had problems with campers pur-posefully defacing camp property; nevertheless, it is explained to each camper that graffiti and property damage will be their and their parents’ responsibility. There will be a $100 minimum charge for each incident of graffiti or damage.

TransportationParents are responsible for making transportation arrangements for their child/ren to get to and from camp. Children flying need to fly into the Manchester, NH airport where they will be met by a camp staff member and accompanied to camp. Camp will transport your child to or from camp for a $30 charge (each way) These arrangements must be confirmed in writing with Shani (shani@campy-

avneh.org) one month prior to the start date via the transportation form. If the airline requires that your child travel as an unescorted minor, you must make arrangements with the camp office in advance. Lug-gage for campers flying to camp should have wheels. Camp Yavneh provides bus transportation to and from NYC/Westchester for a fee. The transportation form is available on your Campintouch account.

Visiting DayCamp Yavneh has one visiting day, July 19th (for full summer campers only), and we look forward to seeing you there. From 10 - 12 the agam will be open for swimming and limited boating. Also from 10-12 there will be family activities including sports, dance and a hay-ride. We then invite you to join us for a delicious lunch from 12-1 which is offered for a nominal donation to Family Table. If you choose to take your child out of camp, you must sign your child in and out in the camp office. Second session programming will begin at 4:30, and all campers should be back in camp by 4:15 p.m. Please don’t allow your child to bring food back to camp. Parents who find it impossible to visit their child(ren) on that day are advised to communicate with Davida or Meir to try to make alternate arrangements. If you are in the area on other days during the summer, we know it is tempting, but please do not stop by camp to visit your child. (Please note: dogs and other pets are not permitted in camp for reasons of health and safety.)

Expensive Articles - Spending Money - Achla Yom (Special days)Campers look forward to Achla Yom. They are exciting days offering adventure, beauty, and wonder. Our trips are to nearby beaches and state parks in Maine and New Hampshire and to the beauti-ful White Mountains. Occasionally there will be an evening out for plays, movies or bowling. The campers and staff eagerly anticipate these excursions. When necessary and appropriate, spending money is distributed to campers and is covered by tuition. While older campers like to bring “their own money”, please ask them to limit the money they bring to camp. Gurim and Kfirim campers (ages 8-11) should not bring extra spending money to camp, however you are encouraged to send along money to donate for tzedakah on Fridays.

As previously stated, please discourage your children from bringing expensive or luxury items to camp. Camp is not responsible for loss or theft of cash or other personal belongings.

Zimriyah - Song FestivalCamp Yavneh’s Zimriyah is one of our oldest traditions and is always scheduled during the first session. Zimriyah 2015 is scheduled for Thursday, July 16th. Start time is approx 7pm. Gates open at 6:30. Parents are allowed to attend, though most do not. This low-key invitation is done intentionally to minimize camper expectations of a parental visit. We understand the difficulties of long-distance travel for the majority of camp families. We do not want campers disappointed that their parents or families are unable to attend, therefore we downplay family attendance. If you care to join us, check our website at the beginning of the summer for further details. Please remember that with so much going on, there is little chance to visit with your children and packages are not allowed to be brought into camp. There will be a live stream of Zimriyah

Safety ConcernsYour children’s safety is of great concern, and therefore we have put in place a few safety rules. Fire drills are practiced throughout the summer, and all bunks are equipped with fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. In accordance with NH State fire code, extension cords are not permitted in the bunks as they pose a fire hazard. Power strips with a circuit breaker should be brought in place of extension cords. String lights, refrigerators, toaster ovens, sandwich makers, etc. are not allowed.

Camp Yavneh’s Technology PolicyOne of the main goals of camp is to create a social environment in which kids can come together during the summer, make new friends, and strengthen old bonds. In light of this goal, we ask for your help in sustaining such an environment.

Help us make your child’s Yavneh summer a time unplugged from their digital umbilical cords in order to promote healthy growth and self-reliance. Though technology serves wonderful purposes and helps us with our daily lives, summers at Yavneh are a way of having a time apart from all of the gizmos, gadgets, and devices that we are used to using. Separation from these devices allows our campers the time and space they need to forge and maintain relationships, solve problems on their own, and encourage bunk community.

Items that are not allowed at camp are any devices that can tweet, email, text, access the internet, or view movies.

This includes the following:• Cell phones• Smartphones, E-book readers, I-pod Touch• Video playing device (i.e. play station portable, video ipods, etc.)

Video playing devices are not allowed in camp. This includes IPODS and MP3 players with video capability.

Consequences:We take our technology policy very seriously. If a camper is found with a prohibited electronic device at camp, the device will be im-mediately confiscated and mailed home at the parents’ expense. A $200 fee will be added to the parents’ account and other repercus-sions will include, but are not limited to, missing a trip day of the camp’s choosing.Thank you for your cooperation in helping us promote a more meaningful experience for our campers. Please share this policy with your child(ren)!

Gum chewing is not allowed at campPlease do not send gum with your campers or mail it to them during the summer. This policy will be strictly enforced.

HealthFacilitiesYavneh Health Services (marp) is well equipped and professionally staffed. In addition to a medical doctor (on premises for the summer), we have three registered nurses on staff at all times. We have access to three hospitals (Concord, Portsmouth, and Dover) all within 30 minutes of camp. Northwood has an emergency medical team and is part of the NH 911 system. If for any reasonyour child needs to be taken to the hospital, the camp medical staff will call you. Prior to camp, the nurses will have call-in hours that will give you an opportunity to speak to the nurses about your child.

HoursWe hold marp hours twice daily. All health complaints are taken seriously, and there is always a medical staff person on duty. Parents will be notified as soon as possible if emergency treatment is necessary. If a camper is kept in the marp overnight parents will be noti-fied. Should a camper be ill at the start of camp, please keep them at home. until they are feeling well enough to come to camp.

MedicationsPlease do not bring or send non-prescription drugs to camp as no prescription or over-the-counter medication (except inhalers and epipens) may be kept in the bunk. If your child requires over-the-counter medicines, we are well stocked and will dispense medication that the medical staff feels is necessary. A nurse or doctor will dispense all medications according to instructions. If your child needs antibiotic treatment while at camp, we will notify you. Lactaid pills are supplied as needed for $15 per month. Should your child require medication, contact Andrews Pharmacy at 781-235-1250 or [email protected] to make arrangements. We are no longer using Campmeds. More informa-tion on the Andrews Pharmacy program will be provided by email. Please contact the camp office if you have any concerns.

InsuranceAll campers are required to have medical insurance while at camp. Please send a copy of the child’s health insurance card to the camp office before camp begins. The camp health facility has a doctor and nurses to treat basic ailments. However, visits to specialists, hospitals or urgent care centers are not covered by camp, and the child’s insurance will be contacted. Any medications prescribed while at camp are also not covered.

AllergiesIf your child has severe allergies requiring an epipen, please send 2 epipens; one will be kept in the bunk and a second will be brought in the medical bag that accompanies our campers on trips out of camp. Be sure to check expiration dates on your epipens before sending!

DentalIt is important that you attend to your child’s dental needs before they leave for camp. There is no dentist at camp. In an emergency, campers will be taken to the nearest dentist/orthodontist at the parents’ expense.

Lyme DiseaseThe Camp Yavneh staff is aware of the Lyme Disease problem in the Northeast. Our medical staff is up to date on symptoms and treat-ment. Counselors are trained during orientation on prevention and symptoms.

EyeglassesChildren who wear eyeglasses should bring an extra pair in case of loss or breakage. Shatterproof lenses are recommended. Broken eyeglasses will be sent out to be repaired. Please label them!

Page 10: Yavneh handbook 15

8

ImmunizationsAll campers and staff are required to be immunized per the Recommended Childhood and Adolescent Immunization Schedule as published by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The only exceptions are people who cannot be immunized due to medicalneeds. If your child is in this category, please provide a doctors note to obtain pre approval from our medical staff.

Children with AsthmaIf a child with asthma requires an inhaler, they should bring 2-3 with them to camp (one kept in the bunk and two in the health cen-ter). Please check expiration dates before sending.

LiceHead lice can be an issue in a communal setting. All campers and staff members will have a head check before joining their bunk-mates. If head lice are discovered, the nurse will immediately treat your child to include medication and combing until the lice are eliminated. There will be a charge to cover the medicine (if not covered by insurance) and for the nurses treatment. Please inform the medical staff at check in if your child has had lice in the past 6 months.

Health FormAll campers must submit a current health form and immunization schedule. We urge you to let us know as much as possible about your child’s medical/emotional history as this information is pertinent to their welfare while in camp. All information is confidential and is only shared with those professionals directly involved in their care. These forms are available on campintouch along with the rest of the forms.

DietConcerns about diet (food allergies, etc.) should be discussed with Jeff Weener (Asst. Dir) before camp begins. If your child has an eating dis-order, or is recovering from one, you must communicate this to camp well before camp begins. If you are concerned about your child’s eating habits at camp, please discuss this with your child prior to camp (too many sweets, pasta only diet, etc.) There are many healthy options always available. . Your child’s physician must send any special dietary needs in writing - Ideally on the physician’s segment of the health form.

BedwettingIf your child has a problem with enuresis (bedwetting), it is important to share this information with the nurses. Our goal is to help your child have a wonderful summer, and bedwetting is best handled if the staff has prior knowledge. Parents must send 1-2 zippered plastic mattress covers as well as extra bedding. A quilt or thin sleeping bag is helpful since our washing machines are not of the commercial variety. Please speak to us if this is an issue for your child.

CommunicationWe want the camping experience to be a very happy and healthy one, and we ask you to let us know about any issues affecting your child when you fill out the parent questionnaire. Please be very honest; as professionals who work with children, we have seen and heard it all. It is always possible to speak privately with a nurse or the head counselors before camp begins to discuss any issues that may be of concern to you or your child.

Page 11: Yavneh handbook 15

Camp Clothing and LaundryIt is essential for health and hygiene that your child brings sufficient clothing to camp. At camp, we change our clothes more frequent-ly during the day than at home due to temperature changes and the variety of activities. However, we also caution against bringing too much. Please follow the packing list as it is a good guideline. Every child receives two Yavneh t-shirts on opening day. The Yavneh t-shirts are worn on trip days, game days, and picture day. Campers will have opportunities to purchase “Yavneh Wear” (Camp Yavneh caps, sweatshirts etc.) on opening day and during Kolbo (canteen) time.

LaundryLaundry is sent out once a week and comes back in individual laundry bags. The clothes are washed, dried and folded. If a child loses an article of clothing in the laundry, the laundry service will attempt to find it and in some instances a check will be sent from the laundry service for a lost item. Yavneh cannot reimburse for lost or damaged items.

Dress at campIn keeping with the values we promote at camp, and in an effort to ensure that camp is a comfortable environment for all campers and staff, we have a set of guidelines for dress at camp. Please discuss this issue with your child and help them select appropriate clothes for camp. Please send clothes that cover the midriff. See-through tops, very short skirts or very revealing tops are not allowed. Underwear is just that, and should not be visible out-side of clothing. Bathing suits are allowed only at the waterfront.

Clothing with inappropriate wording or graphics will not be allowed, and campers will be sent back to their bunk to change. The determi-nation of what is appropriate at camp is solely at the discretion of the camp staff. Please reinforce these values as you help prepare your children for camp. Banquet is a highly anticipated event at camp (second session) . When choosing a dress with your daughter, please select one with the camp values in mind.

Bathing suitsIn recent summers, we have observed that girls have been comparing themselves to one another physically. Although such social comparisons are quite common among school-aged and adolescent girls, they are also associated with poor body-image, low self-esteem, unhealthy eating behaviors, and depressive symptoms. While some such comparisons are unavoidable in the camp environment, we address this issue and thus require that all girls wear one-piece bathing suits at camp. Tankini bathing suits are acceptable as long as the tops and bottoms of the suits touch. Monokini bathing suits, while technically one piece, violate the spirit of this policy and are therefore not allowed. The same bathing suit rules apply on trip day. Thank you for your understanding, and for supporting us in keeping our girls comfortable and secure at camp.

Page 12: Yavneh handbook 15

Shabbat AttireOn Friday evening and Shabbat morning girls wear dresses, skirts or dressy slacks and blouses. Backless clothing, spaghetti straps and excessively short or tight clothing are not appropriate and will not be allowed. Shabbat attire must cover the shoulders and midsec-tion and be neat in appearance. Boys wear casual/dress pants/shorts and shirts with collars. Sports jackets or ties are optional and usually only worn by the older campers and staff. Kippot (not caps) must be worn on Shabbat.

LuggagePlease pack your child/ren’s clothes in duffle bags that are clearly labeled with you camper’s name. Please do not pack in big black trunks since storage space in the bunk is very limited. Do not pack in big plastic bags; these items are almost guaranteed to be lost or thrown out even if well marked. In order to ensure that there is a safe amount of room to move around the bunks, we limit campers to two bags. An additional small backpack or weekend bag should be sent along with your camper. Every child is provided with a cubby by their bed. If you choose to send a set of plastic drawers, then this will be in place of the cubby which will be removed. Size limita-tion: 36” high x 18” deep x 16” wide. We appreciate your cooperation!

A Child’s SpaceThe space allotted to each camper is by necessity small; however, the area in which he/she sleeps is the camper’s home for the summer. Encourage your child to bring a few favorite possessions (a stuffed animal, special blanket, special photo-graphs, etc.) to make their summer bunk really feel like home.

Items campers should not bring from home:Valuable or sentimental jewelryVideo IPODs or Video MP3 Players, DVD players, laptops, PSP’sExpensive electronic devices*Food, soda, gum or bottled water**PhonesSharp edged tools: such as knivesAny projectile devices, air guns, nerf guns or water guns.Matches, lighters, fireworks,Flammable materials, heaters, air conditioners and heating devices

* Campers may bring a hand held game boy or mp3 player (no video) but keep in mind Yavneh is not responsible for the loss of or damage to these or any other items brought to camp.** Our water supply is filtered well water and is excellent.

There will be 3 laundry days for each session and one laundry day for each two week session.

If you choose to send plastic drawers, please limit the size to 36”high x 16”wide x 18”deep. Please note that if you bring drawers you will not receive a wooden cubby.

Keeping Camp Safe

At Yavneh, the health and safety of our campers and staff is our number one priority. We are accredited by the American Camp Association and not only do we adhere to their strict safety guidelines, we go above and beyond them.

Staff orientation week mainly focuses on training our counselors to pay particular attention to camper’s health and safety. Staff are required to attend safety training sessions. These include, but are not limited to; identifying potential hazards around camp, participating in fire drills from the bunks, practicing fire extinguisher use, locating the 3 AED’s, engaging in the missing camper drill and learning how to identify strangers and working with the camp emergency response team. This team is made up of staff from our Health Center, staff who are first aid or EMT trained and our Head Staff who will coordinate with local EMS when necessary.

Our Health Center (Marp) is located in the center of camp and is staffed at all times to address any camper’s or staff’s medical needs. While camp is in session there are three registered nurses on staff as well as a doctor living in camp. Many of our counselors, unit heads and upper staff are certified in Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED. Some are also EMT’s.

Yavneh works closely with local police, the fire department and EMS and has established a strong working relationship with them over the past decade. The police and fire departments survey the camp on a regular basis and provide us with feedback regarding safety on all aspects of our facility. All bunks and buildings are equipped with fire exits, smoke alarms and fire extinguishers which are inspected annually. When the campers first arrive, they are provided with individual bunk safety training culminating with a fire drill from their bunk as well as other areas of camp. A locking key coded gates at both the front and back entrances of camp as well as closed circuit TV cameras around camp record 24 hours a day.

The Waterfront (Agam) is run according to American Red Cross guidelines. All of the waterfront staff are certified lifeguards, most of whom have been trained by our Waterfront Director. Emergency drills are conducted on a regular basis to ensure that our staff provides a high quality, waterfront program.
