A new destination has been born in a blaze of glory – Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, one of the most imaginative, exciting developments in a region known for its audacious super-projects. At the heart of Yas Island is the high-tech Yas Marina Circuit, which made its triumphant global début with the high-profile and highly successful Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November 2009.

Aquarius at Yas Island Rotana is a great place to swing by for a spot of lunch – the ground-floor hangout offers gourmet paninis and salads alongside delicious fruit smoothies. The hotel’s landscaped gardens provide the perfect backdrop.

Over at Centro, meanwhile, there’s the c.deli, a neat little stop-off where you can pick up a freshly-made sandwich to go – perfect if you’re in a hurry. The hub kitchen at Staybridge Suites has a similarly low-fuss concept – guests can pop in and serve themselves cookies and

coffee at any hour of day, and four nights a week there’s an after-work reception where relaxation and mingling are the order of the day.

The Island Café at the Yas Island Rotana’s another grand place – offering light meals, tasty juices and an extensive selection of tempting desserts, it’s an excellent choice for meeting up with a client for a business lunch.

Finally, when it comes to snagging the perfect cup of Malawian or Columbian coffee, you’d be well advised

to direct your steps to the Yas Lounge at The Yas Hotel, where drinks come in elegant bone china cups, accompanied by delicious mini pastries – if you’re feeling indulgent you should also grab yourself a classic, nut-and-cherry-topped banana split or an ‘Arabica’ ice cream with marinaded figs. The high tea – complete with smoked salmon sandwiches, scones and clotted cream and lemon shortbread – is available from 3pm to 6pm and is worth the visit in itself.

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to picking out lovely lounges on Yas Island for relaxing in with your friends. At Centro there’s c.mondo, a chic, cosmopolitan lounge stocked with big comfy chairs, and with a great terrace where you can sit out under the stars and chat until the early hours in winter time. They have a first-class tidbits menu too, in case you’re feeling hungry. Over at Radisson Blu, there’s the Fast Track lounge in the lobby – open throughout the day for coffee and cold drinks and a delightfully stylish place to meet in the evening before

heading on to one of the hotel’s great restaurants.

Meanwhile, the Yas Hotel’s Longitude and Latitude lounges – situated by their two rooftop pools – are first-class places in which to laze in the sunshine, perhaps while nibbling on a delicious Caesar salad or chicken and avocado wrap. Also at the Yas Hotel, the Rush lounge is perfectly placed for watching events at the Yas Marina Circuit – it’s suspended directly over a stretch of track, meaning you get world-class views of the racing action while chilling out. And if you get peckish, you should check out their superb caviar menu.

If you like to take a swim in between lounging, make a beeline for Sands at the Park Inn, where your chilled drinks come with a side order of golf course views. There is a great spread of all-day dining restaurants in the hotels of Yas Island, where you can pop in for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacktime in between. First up is Assymetri at Radisson Blu, where you can enjoy great views with your selection of international dishes, including tasty tiger prawn tempura with soba noodles, teppan-grilled charsui-marinaded lamb and a first-class blue crab and sweetcorn soup. The mango and pineapple carpaccio is another unmissable hit.

Choices at Yas Island Rotana has a great range of international and Asian cuisine – the prime spot to enjoy it is out on the terrace by the pool. Their selection of freshly made pastries and cakes is particularly exciting: a perfect breakfast treat. A series of theme nights should liven things up even further.

Origins at The Yas Hotel is equipped with an open kitchen where you can see a team of chefs at work at the rotisserie, tandoor oven and more. Meals consist of a combination of a gourmet buffet and à la carte dishes (at breakfast you mustn’t miss the golden waffles with fruit salad or the buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup), all ultra fresh and delicious.

The hotels of Yas Island have worked together to make sure there is very little overlap in the cuisines offered by

their restaurants – the only doubling up is in Italian and Indian spots, because the food is so popular – so they have the most incredible range of different styles on offer.

First up is Amerigos at Park Inn, a brightly decorated, contemporary Mexican restaurant where you’ll enjoy an authentic meal in a chilled-out atmosphere. All of the classics are here – zingy guacamole, rich, delicious quesadillas, fajitas and a winning chili con carne. But there are also some more exotic creations to indulge in – we’re particular fans of the baked crab enchiladas, the spicy shrimp tortillas and the wonderful salpicon de mariscos (marinaded mussels). Round things off

with a classic arroz con leche with candied orange and a capirotada – a sort of Mexican bread pudding. Perfect.

Moving on to The Yas Hotel, you’ll adore your dinner at the small but beautiful Amici, where the imaginative Italian food will send you and your guests into ecstasies. Start your meal with a tortino of tomato, aubergine and squeakily fresh mozzarella and a Parmesan-dashed, ultra-delicate beef carpaccio. Follow up with some superb pasta – the meaty ravioli di magro and the toothsome taglioni al frutti di mare with its beautiful mixed seafood are both real winners.

by the Amici ‘triologia al cioccolato’ – a mix of sweet, milk and bitter chocolate desserts.

Just down the über-cool, slickly white, Formula 1-themed corridors lies Angar, a cosy restaurant run by a team of dedicated Indian chefs who turn out note-perfect versions of their home cuisine. The tandoori dishes are particular specialities – you can’t go wrong with a helping of tandoori achari prawns, marinaded in powerful mango pickle, the tandoor Lucknowi lamb chops with ginger or the tandoori hammour tikka, all accompanied by lashings of

tandoori paratha and tangy bombay potatoes.

And if you feel like some Arabic food, you’ve got a great option at The Yas Hotel. There you’ll find Atayeb, a pan-Arabic restaurant offering dishes from Syria, Morocco and Tunisia. The specialities are tagines, couscous and charcoal grills – you’ll love the keshkash lamb, the jebneh kebab with cheese and the badenjan aubergine. Atayeb is also one of the very rare restaurants where you can indulge in some UAE dishes – don’t miss the salona dajaj chicken.

If you’re in the mood for a Lebanese dinner, meanwhile,

you should book a table at Barouk at the Crowne Plaza, a Lebanese fine dining spot where you’ll sit on deep red couches and enjoy the best mezze this side of Beirut – don’t miss out on the particular highlights of bastermah beef, akhtabout octopus salad, and koussa bil zeit, stuffed courgette with fresh mint. For mains, you’ll love the lahmeh mechweh lamb, not to mention the whole chargrilled chicken – the farrouj mosahhab. A word of advice – for dessert they serve one of the best muhalabiyas we’ve ever tasted…

reasonable 250g striploin up to a belt-threatening 600g porterhouse, served with imaginative accompaniments including tempura onions with horseradish dip, broccoli with stilton cream and whipped cheddar mash. Six gourmet sauces – including a frisky chimichurri number – and four butters add the final touches to your night of carnivorous excess. But don’t worry if you’re more of an oceanophile – they do a magic shrimp and chips and a first-class turbot fillet too.

For a relaxing lunch or dinner, there are few finer spots than the outdoor terrace at Filini at the

Radisson Blu. The sound of trickling water provides a gentle backdrop and the bright, airy setting matches the light, sophisticated food to a tee.

Filini is blessed with a wood-fired pizza oven and the light, crisp Ortolanas (with aubergine, peppers and courgette), Filinis (with pecorino, bresaola and rocket) and Quattro Formaggis are all first class. We can also vouch for the vegetable antipasti, a healthy spread of grilled aubergine and peppers, lentil salad and bruschetta – absolutely superb. The Filini tiramisu is an unmissable treat for dessert.

The stunningly-designed Jing Asia at the Crowne Plaza brings together dishes from across Asia: you can indulge in Thai red curry and Chinese dim sum, followed by Indonesian nasi goreng, Indian lamb rogan josh and Malaysian beef rendang – or a lovely Hong Kong roasted chicken. A Friday brunch with lots of Asian live-cooking stations looks set to become a popular favourite too.

For Japanese dishes, meanwhile, there’s the lovely Kazu at The Yas Hotel, with its teppan tables and tatami room, its pair of sushi bars and its dedicated tempura station. This is a restaurant that’s serious about its food – ask your waiter to talk you through their recommendations and you can look forward to the likes of wonderful sweet shrimp and

scallop sashimi, salmon skin rolls, lobster tail tempura and toro sumibiyaki – tuna belly in miso sauce. If you’ve got room left, you’ll love the green tea ice cream and the crème brûlée with Japanese plum.

Nautilus at The Yas Hotel is perched right on the waterside – you can even sail your yacht right up to the private entrance, moor up and step directly inside. The emphasis here is on seafood – there’s a dedicated oyster bar, and the Signature Nautilus platter, piled high with prawns, langoustines, lobster, crab, crayfish and much more, is one of the most indulgent dishes on the island.

This is another spot that’s perfect for entertaining clients – they’ll be sure to find something they fancy in the heady mix of dim sum (try the pot sticker duck dumplings), noodle dishes (the pad Thai is a joy) and wok-cooked specialities (don’t miss the Szechuan chili prawns).

Alongside Angar, the second Indian restaurant on the island is Rangoli at Yas Island Rotana. It’s exotically decked-out with flamboyant furniture and big swags of green and pink cloth. The two private rooms are perfect for a family celebration, and the food’s a canny mix of north and south Indian dishes. You can see the chefs at work in the show kitchen, creating delicious curries, tandoori

grills, rich dals and spicy pickles: a real treat.

The Crowne Plaza boasts a beautiful brasserie in Stills, which serves imaginative gastro-pub-style food, the likes of kipper paté, ballybunion mussels, steak pie and traditional fish and chips with mushy peas. Comfort food desserts take the form of sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and apple strudel with fudge ripple ice cream – but save room for the wonderful cheeseboard.

The final outstanding restaurant at Yas Island is Zeeba at Radisson Blu, a Persian spot located behind traditional carved wood doors. Ancient recipes are brought to life by a team of Iranian chefs, and served with real style in an ornately decorated dining room.

ActivitiesYas Island is absolutely crammed with activities. There’s the beautiful new golf course (see p14), where you can enjoy 18 holes on immaculately-designed undulating fairways with views out over mangroves and blue sea, with the Abu Dhabi skyline in the far distance. Then there’s the Circuit, where you can watch high-profile races, take part in drag racing and get to grips with some seriously high-spec cars (see p15). And you won’t want to miss out on a visit to the Marina, an awe-inspiring anchorage which is the focal point for water sports on the island (see p16).

Another big attraction which will be opening to great acclaim in 2010 is Ferrari

World Abu Dhabi, which will be the largest indoor theme park in the world. It will be filled with rides – including the fastest rollercoaster on the planet – and its roof is designed as a Ferrari GT’s body shell. 2010 sees the opening of the Middle East’s first links golf course, designed by Kyle Phillips, renowned for his work on St Andrews’ Kingsbarn course and The Grove in London. The 18-hole, par 72 Yas Links is set on the west shores of Yas Island, surrounded by stunning new mangrove plantations and rolling hills. The planting of wispy native grasses and

backdrop of undulating sand dunes gives it a wistful, rugged feel not often witnessed in the UAE’s pristine new spaces.

With 144 bunkers and 300,000m³ of capped sand, the course is truly spectacular, but the facilities are also superb: there’s a nine-hole par three academy course, a floodlit driving range, a golf academy with two indoor swing studios and eight covered hitting bays,

and a short-game chipping and bunker practice area. Add to that a clubhouse with steam rooms, a private mooring area for those wishing to sail back to their hotel, a Mediterranean fine dining restaurant and an outdoor pool, and we can safely say that Yas Links is a world-class golf course. Eight of the holes are actually set on the coastline, but all 18 boast stunning sea views...

Whether you’re into racing or not, the 161.9-hectare Yas Marina Circuit is an extraordinary spectacle and compares very favourably to other F1 tracks around the world. Spread across 5.55km, the track is visible from 50,000 separate seats, all of which, for the first time in F1 history, are covered – though this is probably not for rain shelter… Score a place in the West Grandstand and you’ll be privy to another world first: the run-off for cars that fail to get round the tight bend

passes directly underneath your seat. Book into the North Grandstand and you’ll be right on the hairpin; the South Grandstand meanwhile offers a spectacular view of the track-straddling Yas Hotel and the marina. In mid-2010 a Drag Centre is set to open – exciting news for the numerous drag-racing fans in the UAE. Adrenaline junkies, watch out...

A stunning, state of the art marina takes pride of place at Yas Island, next to the Marina Circuit. It’s got berths for scores of yachts, and superb facilities for anyone mooring up. Not only can you sail right in to the heart of the island to enjoy motorsports or a stay at one of the world-class hotels, but you can also spend time relaxing in the high-class international restaurant on the top floor of the clubhouse

– make sure to get there in time to watch the sun set from the huge terrace overlooking the circuit. Then there’s the business lounge where your crew can catch up with email, relax over lunch or watch a DVD; the chandlery shop for all your sailing bits and bobs; and the family-friendly Stars and Bars eatery. When it comes to exploring the local area by sea, there are lots of options – Abu Dhabi is blessed with 200 natural islands and acres of

mangroves which you can cruise in and out of. But you don’t need to own a yacht in order to take advantage of the marina – you can charter a boat and take a tour of the area, stopping off for a swim in unspoilt waters, where you may even be lucky enough to run into some of the local dolphins. The Marina is also developing a series of water sports so non-boating types can make the most of the glorious weather and tranquil waters too.
