Macca’s getsnew franchiseeBY DAVID SCHOUT

Upsized anger: Despite community protests, McDonald’s saysconstruction on the Tecoma restaurant will begin in May.

Picture: Gary Sissons

A YARRA Ranges local has bought thefranchise rights for the controversialTecoma McDonald’s restaurant — afterthe original franchisee pulled out.

Businessman James Currie will be thefranchisee for the Burwood Highway siteafter Howard Armitage — the son ofClive Armitage, the first McDonald’sfranchisee in Australia — recently with-drew.

Mr Currie said he was looking forwardto opening the restaurant, with construc-tion expected to start in May.

‘‘I’m a born and bred Victorian andhave lived in the Yarra Ranges for over 15years,’’ he said.

‘‘I love the area and the people, and as alocal businessman I’d really like to playan active and supportive role in Tecoma.’’

Mr Currie would not answer whetherthe controversy surrounding the restaur-ant had weighed on his decision, but saidhe hoped ‘‘the community and I can worktogether moving forward’’.

He also would not answer whether hehad sought community feedback on therestaurant before making his decision.

McDonald’s spokeswoman SkyeOxenham said there were ‘‘a number of

candidates interested in . . . the Tecomalocation’’.

She gave no indication as to why MrArmitage had pulled out at such a latestage.

Earlier this month, 3000 peoplemarched through the streets of Tecomaagainst the site and urged McDonald’shierarchy to meet with locals.

Ms Oxenham, however, confirmedthat a meeting would not be happening inthe near future.

No Maccas in the Hills spokesmanGarry Muratore — who has previouslylabelled Ms Oxenham’s rhetoric as ‘‘atbest delusional or at worst a corporatelie’’ — said he did not believe McDonald’swould actually begin construction inMay.

‘‘We believe McDonald’s made thisstatement to draw attention to them-selves after 3000 people walked throughTecoma and said ‘no’.’’

Mr Muratore said the protest marchwas ‘‘the largest gathering of people everin the Dandenong Ranges’’.

‘‘McDonald’s can say what they likebut the community is against this.’’

Despite the store’s imminent arrival inTecoma, anti-McDonald’s support con-tinues to rise.

Landowners hit with tall-grass finesYARRA Ranges landowners have been finedtens of thousands of dollars for not keepingtheir grass under 10 centiemtres long this fireseason. Under fire prevention rules, the councilcan order residents to maintain their lawns toreduce the chance of causing a fire.

This season the council issued 1400 notices

to landowners, 100 of whom did not cut theirgrass in the specified time frame.

The council sent out invoices to these land-owners to cover the cost of maintaining thelawns for them, as well as contractor costs.

Owner of Lilydale and Outer Eastern Slash-ing Service Tony Lander said contractor costs

were typically $100-$200. Yarra Ranges exec-utive officer of emergency management KateSiebert said the council was relatively pleasedwith the result.

‘‘Given the council assesses more than60,000 properties, it’s good to see the majorityof landowners doing the right thing,’’ she said.

Labelling isn’t analysingTwo letters in Your Voice last week (March 5) offerstarkly contrasting examples of argument. Rejectingabuse, name-calling and labels, Ray and MarionLewis coolly refute concerns raised in a previousletter. And because they present hard evidence, weall learn something.

But we learn little from ‘Tarzanna’, other thanthat she has an axe to grind. Debate, it seems, is akinto barracking. The whistle blows and you lean overthe rail, screaming, ‘‘This mob are away with thefairies!’’ Or ‘‘it’s a typical Greenie policy!’’

Tarzanna, rely on disparaging labels and youemphasise your inability to argue a case on its mer-its. But no doubt these observations are my attemptto ‘demonstrate some sort of moral superiority’.

At last, relief on the wayBY DAVID SCHOUT

PEOPLE with a disability and their carers areboth excited and uncertain about what theNational Disability Insurance Scheme willmean for them.

Last Wednesday, locals with a disability, their carers and families met federal Parlia-mentary Secretary for Disabilities and CarersJan McLucas at a forum in Bayswater Northto discuss how the scheme would benefitthem. ‘‘As part of the NDIS, we will ask peoplewith disabilities questions they haven’t beenasked before,’’ Senator McLucas said.

‘‘It won’t be about ‘how do we keep youalive’; it’s about treating you as a person whowants to be included in society.’’

The NDIS is a new healthcare programintroduced by the federal government that willchange the way people with a disability andtheir carers are treated. It is one of the fewpolicies on which the two sides of politics areunified in how they’ll implement it.

Heathmont resident Woody Marriott, whoat 18 months old was diagnosed with cere-bellar ataxia, a nervous system disorder thataffects balance and co-ordination, said yearsof broken promises had taken its toll. ‘‘I just

want to be assured it will happen. It’s verypolitical at the moment,’’ he said. ‘‘It shouldhave been in years ago. It will take away thestigma of the person who has a disability.’’

Mr Marriott, co-founder of the DisabilityAction Group Eastern Region, said the

NDIS was something everyone should beaware of.

In Victoria, the NDIS will be first launchedin the Barwon area in July. From there, thegovernment will rely on feedback to refine thescheme for other areas in the state.

Just give us clarity, parents plead‘One of our biggest concerns isworking out long-term care for ourdaughter when we can no longer carefor her.’ — Montrose couple

FOR one Montrose couple, the promise ofthe NDIS is not enough to assuage their fearsof what lies ahead for their daughter. Thecouple, who want to remain anonymous, spoke with the Weekly at Wednesday’sforum about their concerns with the NDIS.

The couple’s 26-year-old daughter has anintellectual disability.

‘‘One of our biggest concerns is workingout long-term care for our daughter whenwe can no longer care for her,’’ they said.

‘‘We’re not sure at all if she’d survive in acommunity house.

‘‘She takes a lot of things on face value, which can be problematic.

‘‘If someone smiles at her or says some-

thing nice, that person is all of a sudden themost trustworthy person in her life and hernew best friend, so she has difficulties inrecognising danger.’’

Like others, the couple fear the NDIS maybecome a victim of political fighting, andthey want some clarity.

‘‘What we’ve asked in the past hasn’t beenanswered.’’

Foundation puts poverty on trial

BY YESSAR DAOU

FOR Emma Jane Ryan, the long weekend wasn’tso much about rest and relaxation. Rather, it wasan extra day to spread the word on endingpoverty.

As a group leader of Oaktree Foundationambassadors, Ms Ryan has been playing animportant role in raising awareness for the Road-trip to End Poverty campaign, which culminatedin a region-wide forum in Lilydale on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Lilydale resident phonedschools and sent out flyers in preparation for theforum, which was run by the ambassadors them-selves.

‘‘When I was in high school learning aboutother countries, it was troubling to learn abouttheir struggles and the inequalities,’’ Ms Ryansaid of why she got involved.

‘‘I wanted to have my voice heard and helpothers who are less fortunate.’’

The Roadtrip to End Poverty is an awareness-based campaign that aims to demonstratecommunity support for a rise in the foreign aidbudget to 0.7 per cent of gross national incomeby the year 2020. Currently, just 0.36 per centGNI in Australia is given in foreign aid.

Victoria has about 260 of the ambassadors,

split into five different routes with each travellingthrough different key electorates and hostingpolitical events, community actions and work-shops.

Sunday’s political forum in Lilydale had apanel of five guest speakers, including federal MPTony Smith, Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe andGreens Senate candidate Janet Rice discussingtheir thoughts on Australia’s foreign aid contri-bution.

Over in Croydon, a less formal communitysupport event was held. Ambassadors, includingRingwood East’s Holly Trenegeza, were atCroydon Memorial Pool liaising with visitorsand cooking pancakes. ‘‘Our role as ambassadorsis to talk to people and explain the issue,’’ Holly,16, said. ‘‘About 70 of us were there talkingabout poverty, and cooking for everybody.’’

Holly, who attends Ringwood SecondaryCollege, is vocal in her thinking on poverty.

‘‘It’s something I want to see changed in mygeneration,’’ she says. ‘‘I think we can eradicateextreme poverty in our lifetime. We are the firstgeneration that can make a difference.’’

Ministers haggle, patients waitWAITING lists for elective surgery atMaroondah Hospital have almost doubled inthe past year.

The latest state government figures showthat on December 31 last year, 1156 patientswere waiting to have an elective procedure atthe hospital — compared with 641 patients atthe same date in 2011.

And while the state and federal govern-ments continue to blame each other for theblowout, locals are losing out.

Health Minister David Davis said while thefederal government had backflipped on itsplan to cut $107 million to Victorian hospitalfunding, the planned cut had still affectedhospitals like Maroondah.

‘‘This savage cut was belatedly promised tobe restored in February after extreme pressureon the federal government, but our hospitalshave already scaled back their activity,’’ MrDavis said. ‘‘It will take the hospitals sometime to gear up again, and those cuts willshow up in future quarterly reports.’’

Federal Health Minister Tanya Plibersekhad earlier said Victorians were living in a‘‘state of secrecy’’ and that earlier cuts by thestate government were also to blame.

Singles mingle for a bigger goalBY YESSAR DAOU

DON’T judge a book by its cover, so goes the adage— and it’s certainly personified by the DiamondSingles.

Despite the name, the Maroondah-based socialgroup is not so much about matchmaking as it isabout fund-raising, with Maroondah Breast Clinicits key cause.

They’ve just chosen to do so in a novel way —through organising singles events for those agedover 40 and encouraging social activities for singlesin that age group.

‘‘It’s about trying to make a difference in the livesof others who have been touched by cancer,’’ clubpresident Sharon Norris says.

She says the name represents the different facetsand colours in diamonds — just like in all people.

‘‘There are many mature singles who are lookingto meet others in the same situation,’’ she says.‘‘Everyone is a VIP. We’re trying to help twocommunities — singles that are over 40, and breastcancer sufferers.’’

Before forming Diamond Singles — run by aneight-member committee — Ms Norris was raisingmoney for the clinic by hosting fund-raisers out ofher backyard.

‘‘I was running morning teas, luncheons and gold

coin collections,’’ says the Croydon resident. ‘‘Dur-ing the events we’d play games and other fun stufflike ‘pass the parcel’. I charged people for enteringmy home, pretty much.’’

Interestingly enough, Diamond Singles wasstarted almost by accident, with Ms Norris’s inten-tions being to host a girls’ night out, before she andthe other members changed their plans at the lastminute.

The night was first held in January and raised

$1200 for breast cancer research. The event ishosted by the Maroondah Sports Club, its mainsponsor.

This Sunday, Ms Norris and fellow committeemembers will host its second event and hope to havemore than the 70 people who attended last time.

Entry is $20 and runs from 7pm-11pm. To book,or help sponsor the event, call Ms Norris on0404 225 785.

Hepatitisdoctor sentto prisonA CROYDON anaesthetist whoinfected 55 women with hepatitis C hasbeen sentenced to 14 years jail, with a10-year non-parole period.

Dr James Peters, the former directorof Croydon Day Surgery clinic, waslast Thursday found guilty of negli-gently causing serious injury to patientsby reusing syringes he used on himself.

The Supreme Court heard thatPeters, who has a history of narcoticabuse, injected himself with pre-filledsyringes of Fentanyl — an opioid —before using the remaining drug onwomen undergoing pregnancy termin-ations. He infected 55 women with thepotentially deadly blood diseasebetween June 2008 and November2009.

In handing down his sentence, Just-ice Terry Forrest declared Peters ‘‘trulyreprehensible’’ as he handed down thesentence, stating he had breached thetrust every patient has in the doctorswho treat them.

Coolest chic: a tribute to Gran

On display: Katrina Wright will showcase her fashionline ‘Mikat’ at the 2013 edition of design competitionDEBUT in Sydney.

BY YESSAR DAOU

FINALLY having her lifelong dream come trueended up being something of a bittersweetmoment for Katrina Wright.

Just hours after the budding fashion designerfrom Heathmont found out she’d be flying toSydney to compete in a nationwide showcase, she received the news that she’d lost the biggestinfluence on her career.

‘‘My inspiration is my nana; she was always afashionista. But just after I received the emailsaying I was chosen, I got the news she’d passedaway,’’ she says.

That was back in January. Now, as the32-year-old departs this month for Sydney andher part in Australia’s biggest emerging designershowcase, DEBUT, she chooses to see thesituation positively.

‘‘From that day on, I knew it was meant tobe,’’ she says. ‘‘Being selected was a nice tributeto her. She’s the reason I love fashion.’’

Ms Wright, who has worked for Jeans West,Just Jeans, Gaz Man and Myer, says she’sexcited to showcase her own collection andlabel Mikat.

‘‘It’s such a massive opportunity being part of

a prestigious design competition,’’ says MsWright. ‘‘It gives me the chance to build mybrand identity.’’

She explains her label’s name. ‘‘It came frommy nickname Kat, and has the Italian word for‘me’ in front of it,’’ she laughs. ‘‘It’s what mydesigns are about.’’

Ms Wright carries a notepad wherever shegoes, believing you never know when ideas willcrop up. ‘‘Inspiration comes to me at the mostrandom times.’’

Ms Wright began designing after continuallybeing disappointed with what the marketoffered. But she still works part-time at CountryRoad at Eastland shopping centre as a means ofkeeping up to date with current trends.

‘‘I felt constantly disappointed by the style ofhandbags and stuff out there. At least at Coun-try Road I get to keep my finger on the pulseand interact with customers.’’

Created in 2006, DEBUT is biannual eventthat gives new apparel and accessory labelsfrom Australia and New Zealand a chance tobreak into the highly competitive Australasianfashion industry. To view, or purchase some of KatrinaWright’s Mikat collection, visit mikataccessories.com.au

SWIMMING LESSONS – A VALUABLE LIFE SKILL

ADVERTORIAL

The statistics so far this summer indicate that this has been the worst summer on record for drowning deaths. With 31 people drowning in December 2012, an increase from 28 for the same period in 2011 shows that of these unnecessary deaths, almost 20 per cent were children in the agegroup 0 – 14 years.

With this in mind, 1 in 5 children will leave primary school this year without the skills to swim at least 50 metres or even stay afl oat for two minutes, even if their life depended on it.

The dedicated team at Kilsyth Centenary Pool are offering parents a cost effective way for children to gain the valuable life skills needed with their swim school classes.

Classes range from 6 months of age right thru to adults and cater for all abilities.

Staff are fully qualifi ed and do ongoing assessments to make sure your child receives the best possible learning outcome for each individual stage.

Lessons are conducted all year round and start from $9.50 per week and are direct debited. This cost also allows

free membership to the pool, including parents of children under 5 years of age. Some health insurance funds also offer a rebate for swimming lessons ranging from $150.00 - $200.00, so check your health fund to see if they offer this service.

To register, contact the team at Kilsyth Centenary Pool on 9725 9411.

Hawks facebig challengeIT won’t be easy but Ringwood Hawks will setout to win back-to-back Big V state champion-ship men’s basketball titles when the seasonbegins on Saturday night.

The Hawks will return eight of theirchampionship-winning players, although thetwo omissions, forward Adrien Sturt and grandfinal most valuable player and import guardSkyler Bowlin, have resulted in many doubtingwhether the Hawks are good enough to win itagain.

Sturt spurned the Hawks and decided to joinBulleen Boomers while Bowlin took up a lucrat-ive deal in Denmark.

Hawks coach Ken Harrington said he washappy his side was being written off.

“Teams like Corio Bay, Bulleen and DiamondValley have been busy recruiting in the off-seasonand seem to have generated the most interest inpreseason,’’ Harrington said.

“We are happy if nobody rates us, it means wecan just play hard and let other teams try tohandle the expectations that we had on us lastyear.”

Captain Willie Weimer and veteran MattSnowball are both closing in on 300 Big V gamesfor the Hawks while big men Shaun Clarke, LukeEgan, Mark Whitehead and import Sam Belt willall return.

New import guard Bryan Dougher, shooterMichael Stellar and emerging guards Max Suttonand Chris Flack round out the side.

Just to add to the challenges, Sutton, Snowball,Egan and Dougher have all battled injuries dur-ing the preseason but all are expected to be readyto play in round 1.

Weimer said his side would fight out each andevery game and still believed it had the talent tocontend once again.

“It’s a tough league and they will hunt us,’’ hesaid. ‘‘But our championship was very hard to getand we won’t give it up without a serious fight.”

— Roy Ward

The Big V season for all men’s and women’scompetitions begins this Saturday night.

Mt Evelyn climbs another rungBY CHRIS ANDERSON

AFTER 21 weeks of toil it all came down to thelast day of play for Mt Evelyn or Warburton-Millgrove to secure a place in the DJ StrachanShield finals.

With Seville, Coldstream and Healesville allbut assured in the top four, it was a battlebetween the Rovers and the Burras for the finalposition.

Warburton-Millgrove travelled to HoddlesCreek, defending 191 on the lightning-quickHoddles Creek ground. Sitting at 1-19 overnight, both sides were looking for a quick start, and itwas the Burras who snuffed out two early wick-ets to have their finals aspirations on track.

The Derix name is synonymous with cricket atHoddles Creek, and it was fitting that brothers

Brenton and Jeremy combined for a game-changing partnership.

With disciplined batting, the Wombats movedconfidently towards the winning target.

The loss of Brenton Derix for 32 gave theBurras some confidence, but Jeremy Derix (102not out) expertly anchored the chase to see theWombats through to the target with five wicketsin hand.

So Mt Evelyn was assured it would take part infinals and easily accounted for Woori Yallock. After being 2-38 overnight, and in a strong posi-tion, the Tigers were rocked from the first over,as the brilliant Kane Jones captured three wicketsbefore the first change of ends.

At 6-43, the Tigers were going to battle tomake the required 160 for victory.

Dean Worlley (30) and Daniel Ryan ensured

the Tigers wouldn’t be completely embarrassedwith a fighting 27-run partnership, but Joneswould have nothing of a revival as he quicklyextinguished the Tigers’ tail and finished with7-38. The Tigers were all out for 87.

Seville and Coldstream will enter the finalswith confidence at different ends of the scaleafter their final-round clash.

Seville not only sent a message to the Crocs, but the entire association as it made short workof their score. Posting an imposing 267 on dayone, the Blues didn’t give Coldstream an inch asspeedsters Matt Tilney (4-49) and IsharaAmerasinghe (3-19) made short work of theCrocs, bowled out for a paltry 118.

In this Saturday’s semi-finals Seville is expectedto host Coldstream while Healesville should playhost to Mt Evelyn.

Cobras put all the puzzle pieces together

Coming back: Kilsyth forward Auryn Macmillan willreturn to the Cobras in the early rounds of the season.

KILSYTH Cobras men’s coach Grant Wallacelooked at his team at the end of last season anddecided he had to fix several shortcomings.

The first was to find a ‘‘pass-first’’ point guardwith court speed and defensive skills, the secondwas a back-up big man for star post playersAuryn Macmillan and Tim Lang, and finally theCobras needed an import who could give them aboost on both offence and defence.

Wallace believes he has solved all three prob-lems, signing Tiri Matsunda from Hobart to fillthe point guard position while signing veterancentre Brad Bridgewater, and import guard EJKrusnyer to replace Garfield Blair.

He compared Krusnyer to former SEABLgrand final most valuable player Mike Kelly, whowent on to win the NBL championship withSouth-East Melbourne Magic.

‘‘EJ is going to be great in that role, he hustleshard and plays a very similar role to a Mike Kellytype player,’’ Wallace said.

‘‘He is a better shooter but not as big althoughhe has the same competitiveness and will surprisea lot of people this year.’’

Bridgewater has turned up in peak condition

after having knee and wrist surgery in October.‘‘He will play two to three minutes each quar-

ter to rest our big guys,’’ Wallace said.‘‘He is an athlete and can play above the rim.

We will look for him to play quality minutesrather than big minutes.’’

Matsunda struggled to play extended minutesin Tasmania but will get the chance to start andbe a major player with the Cobras.

‘‘He was probably underutilised in Hobart,’’Wallace said.

‘‘They had a lot of good guards but when hecame off the court we were always relievedbecause we couldn’t stay in front of him.

‘‘He is arguably the quickest player in the com-petition and will relish the opportunity to start. Ithink he too will surprise a lot of people.’’

Macmillan will rejoin the side when he finishesthe NBL season with Wollongong Hawks.

Wallace said Macmillan could return as earlyas round 3 but could miss six to seven games ifthe Hawks go deeper into the post-season.

Emerging Cobras players Cam Johnson, MattCromarty and Kristian Williams have also madegood improvement while Dan Briglia, Matt

Maden and David Moore have left the side alongwith import Zach Malvik.

The Cobras men start their season againstNunawading Spectres at Nunawading Stadiumon Sunday at 2.30pm.
