A Carefully Managed Return On Monday we began the managed return to school journey with the first day of Phase 1 school operations. It was great to greet students at the front gate all looking resplendent in their winter uniforms. Thanks to our wonderful school community that has largely continued to follow the government and school messaging so that our carefully planned and managed start was a great success on its first day. We greatly appreciate those parents and carers who are respecting our request to practice a strict 'Kiss and Drop' and dropping their children at the school gates and only entering the grounds when necessary. Student numbers were safely accommodated on the school site to enable important teacher/student face-to-face check-ins whilst still allowing half of our teaching staff to maintain online support for students learning from home. The enhanced cleaning program has commenced with Anhil and Gina from Facilities First providing additional cleaning of toilets, basins and ‘touch points’ throughout the day. Hand hygiene practices are being reinforced with supplies of soap and sanitizer readily available to students and staff in classrooms and toilets.

Principal’s Report

Week 1 PBEL Focus – Celebrating our successes and the successes of others.

At school this means celebrate when we and others achieve a difficult task and climb out of the ‘learning pit’.

At home children might like to discuss these ideas with their families and practise cheering on family members when they achieve a personal goal.

A Carefully Managed Return

On Monday we began the managed return to school journey with the first day of Phase 1 school operations.

Thank you to our school Parents and Citizens Association who have managed the re-introduction of a revised canteen menu for online lunch orders only. These orders can be made through Munch Monitor app before 8.45am on the day children will be at school. Many thanks again for your continued cooperation.

Staff Professional Learning - Focus on Creating Texts This term teachers will be engaging in two online professional learning modules to further develop knowledge of current theoretical perspectives on writing processes and the explicit teaching of writing. Focus on Creating Texts has been developed in conjunction with Dr Tessa Daffern. Module 1: Understanding Writing: An evidence-based approach In this module, teachers will reflect on current approaches to teaching writing, explore processes of meaning-making through writing, and consider conditions that support learning to write.

In week 6 all teachers will work collaboratively with St Ives Park teachers in moderating writing samples to ensure consistent teacher judgement. Virtual P&C Meeting postponed. A new date and time will be communicated shortly.

Every weekday morning since April 29 from 8:45am, the NSW Department of Education have been presenting live streams from some famous faces, exclusive to the students of NSW. Presenters have included:

• Maths teacher Eddie Woo • Sydney Swans player Ollie Florent • Gardening Australia host Costa Georgiadis • Filmaker Gracie Otto • Author and illustrator Cressida Cowel • Managing Director of Google Australia and New Zealand Mel Silva • NRL legend Alan Tongue • TV foodies Matt Preston, Manu Feildel and Gary Mehigan • Musician Guy Sebastian

If you and your children missed them, you can catch up on these at the following link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/learning-from-home/education-live

Assemblies and Merit Awards Our merit system will continue with teachers presenting awards to students learning at school and at home. We have made provisions for missed assemblies and extra merit certificates will be awarded to make up for the time that has passed. Your child's classroom teacher will give them their merit certificate the following week on their day at school. We will advise when assemblies can resume.

PSSA, Excursions, Incursions...

All extra-curricular activities remain suspended. This also includes all community use agreements, using the school grounds after school and on weekends, and playground equipment. We look forward to being able to welcome everyone back once we are advised it is safe to do so.

Religion and ethics lessons continue at home

Students learning from home can continue to access Special religious education (SRE) and Special education in ethics (SEE) classes. Face-to-face SRE, SEE and Voluntary student activities of a religious nature in schools (VSA) will not be available until schools resume normal operations. In response to requests from school communities, SRE and SEE approved providers are delivering their authorised curriculum with modifications to allow students to learn from home from the start of Term 2. The lesson content and the mode of delivery has been reviewed and modified for easy access by students. The approved providers recognise that learning at home will not replicate face-to-face learning at school. The learning from home SRE and SEE programs are now available:

• Anglican SRE • Catholic SRE • Primary Ethics SEE

Noticeboard – Trivia Tuesday

Watch the school noticeboard each week on Tuesday for the “Trivia Tuesday” question. The answer will be in the following week’s newsletter.

Last week’s trivia question:

How many hearts does an octopus have? 3!

A systemic heart that circulates blood around the body and two branchial hearts that pump it through each of the two gills.

Borrowing is back!

Students are coming to the library to borrow books on the day their class is at school. They should bring a library bag, books to return and any completed Premier's Reading Challenge sheets. All returned books are being treated according to DET COVID-19 hygiene requirements, which involves antiseptic wiping of plastic covers and holding books back before shelving. Premier's Reading Challenge: changes for 2020

Students may include up to 3 books from a PRC series, for as many series as they wish. Any extra books can be included as Choice books. Students may include 10 Choice books. These are books not on the PRC Booklist or books from a younger PRC level. All PRC books in our library have a coloured PRC sticker on the cover. Northern Beaches Young Writers' Competition 2020
