As the Yankton School District enters its 141st year of existence, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new staff, students, and community members. We are extremely proud of the continued success of our students.

As we prepare for the 2016-17 school year, I would encourage you to take the time to

review the various elements contained within the YSD Newsletter. Here you will find a wealth of information regarding our schools, such as school supply lists, important telephone numbers, registration dates, and pertinent information regarding the school food service program and school activities.

The community of Yankton believes in a strong commitment to education, which is evident in the programs and opportunities available to our students. The Yankton School District has a reputation for excellence in Academics, Career and Technical Education, Fine Arts, and Extracurricular programming. Our focus on the whole child means students are educated to become successful, productive citizens who are critical thinkers and who exhibit strong character.

Students learn best when educators develop meaningful partnerships with parents and the community. We encourage and value your input as parents and patrons of the Yankton School District. We believe in working together for the benefit of our children, families, and community.

We are very proud of our students, community, and our outstanding school system. The education and safety of our students is very important. We will work very hard to make sure we provide an outstanding education and safe learning environment for our students, as well as staff.

Just as there are many new students enrolled this year, we welcome 10 new teachers and classified professional staff to the school district, and one new school board member. In July, Mr. Terry Crandall will replace board member Dr. Jim Fitzgerald. Dr. Fitzgerald served 6 years on the school board, and his leadership and insight will be missed. We wish to sincerely thank him for his service.

Please check out the Yankton School District Homepage at www.ysd.k12.sd.us. You are always welcome to contact me at any time to visit.

In closing, we sincerely hope that you will find the Yankton School District committed to developing the finest educational system in the state. We believe that with your support we will continue to grow and prosper.

Henry Ford stated, “Coming together is a beginning. Staying together is a process. Working together is a success.”

Welcome to all the new and existing families to the 2016-2017 school year! We have four attendance centers within the town of Yankton. Beadle, Lincoln, Stewart and Webster Elementary Schools provide quality curriculum offerings with highly educated teachers. The schools are all Title 1 schools that have Reading Recovery for students in 1st Grade. There are special education programs to accommodate students with special needs and allow them to achieve their highest potential. Our elementary schools offer a variety of programs in addition to the core content curriculum, such as Girls on the Run, Coding Club and Orchestra/Band to name a few. Our teachers utilize a variety of technology lessons and devices on a regular basis, so our students have opportunities to interact with Smartboards, iPads, Chromebooks and computers. Each elementary school incorporates students as leaders as they have the opportunity to serve their friends and classmates in Student Council. We are looking forward to another amazing year at the Yankton Elementary Schools.

LUNCH PROGRAM

WELCOME BACK!We look forward to the 2016-2017 school year. We encourage parents to join us for breakfast or lunch anytime during the school year. Feedback from students and parents is an important component of our program. If you have questions, comments or concerns, please call the Yankton School District School Nutrition Director, Sandi Kramer at 665-8379.

SCHOOL BREAKFASTBreakfast will be available at the Beadle, Lincoln, Stewart, Webster, Middle School and High School each day. Breakfast serving time at each elementary school and Middle School is 7:45 am – 8:25 am. The High School serving time is 7:30 am – 10:00 am. The breakfast menu can be found at www.ysd.k12.sd.us

Please encourage your student to eat breakfast, either at home or school. Numerous studies have shown the importance of eating a healthy breakfast as proper nutrition in the morning allows young minds to concentrate on learning!

SCHOOL LUNCHNutritional meals are a crucial component to a student’s ability to learn. School meals contain a variety of foods and offer students exposure to new foods. Nourished students will generally have better attendance, be more attentive and have more energy to cope with school-day activities.

We invite parents at the elementary schools to come eat lunch with students. The lunch menu can be found at www.ysd.k12.sd.us. Please contact the school office before 9:00 am if you would like to join your child(ren) for lunch. Lunch serving times are as follows: Beadle Elementary 11:15 am – 12:35 pm Lincoln Elementary 11:15 am – 12:35 pm Stewart Elementary 11:15 am – 12:45 pm Webster Elementary 11:15 am – 12:15 pm Yankton Middle School 11:00 am – 1:00 pm Yankton High School 11:15 am – 12:45 pm

STUDENT ACCOUNTS Each building participates in a computerized accounting system. This is a computerized system that is installed in the lunch line that eliminates the need for students to carry lunch tickets. Students are assigned a student ID number for them to punch in during lunch time. Deposits may be made at any time. There is also a program called My School Bucks that is available for parents to check on students accounts or set up reminders to make a deposit to the account. If a parent wishes to make a deposit there is a $2.00 transaction fee for each transaction. For information regarding My School Bucks program, contact the Child Nutrition Supervisor at 665-8379 or visit the Food Service section at www.ysd.k12.sd.us. The first lunch deposit of the year should be made to the building secretary prior to the opening of school to facilitate a smooth opening day.

FREE OR REDUCED MEAL ACCOUNTSFree or reduced meal applications may be submitted at any time during the school year. If your student(s) were eligible for free or reduced price meals at the end of the 2015-2016 school year, you will be granted a grace period to re-apply until October 1, 2016. Households must re-apply each year for meal benefits. If a qualifying application is not received on or before the end of the grace period, the student’s meal account will be changed to paid status.
