Founded by Lucy Morgan in 1923, Penland has grown to encompass 400 acres and over 40 structures. Penland School has an annual hands-on community open house where you can make your own handmade treasure to take home. The Bakersville, Penland and Spruce Pine areas are home to over 100 profes-sional craft artists’ studios and galleries representing glass, pottery, metal, weavings, jewelry and a lot more. Don’t miss the Toe River Arts Council studio tours held in June and December for the opportunity to visit artists in their working studio environments.

From Grandfather Mountain to the North Carolina Coast, artists living their legacy have been honored since 1986 with the North Carolina Living Treasures designation by the Museum of World Cultures. The initiative celebrates the value of artists and their talents, art, and their contribution to education and society. The biannual honor has recog-nized boatwrights, potters, luthiers, marqueters, blacksmiths, gunsmiths, weavers and glass artisans, to name a few. These artists and craftsmen have demonstrated their talents honed over decades of study and work.

Both Spruce Pine and Bakersville have been designated as a part of this North Carolina program. Now interested participants can purchase a 3-day $5 fishing license for residents or non-residents to fish in these waters. In addition, rods and reels are available to the public to check out free of charge and you get to keep the tackle box! A Troutacular Festival is held each year the first Saturday in June in both Spruce Pine and Bakersville to kick off the trout fishing season.

GET YOUR BOOTS ON: Is hiking or backpacking your thing? Then you’ll love the mountain trails found in our region. Craft your Adventure on the Roan Mountain Trails, Roan Mountain and the Roan Mountain Highlands straddle the North Car-olina/Tennessee border just a few miles outside of Bakers-ville. Hikers in the know will recognize the famous Ap-palachian Trail that crosses Roan Mountain. Roan Trails include the Cloudland Trail, Gardens Trail (the world’s largest rhododendron gardens) and the Appalachian Trail. And of course, the Blue Ridge Parkway meandering right through our county, you can access many of the Parkway trails within minutes.

GET LUCKY! Known as the most important mining district in the world, Spruce Pine is a rock hound’s dream come true. Numerous gem mining establishments await you where you can pan for treasure and even have your treasure cut and polished into jewelry you can wear. The area gem mines are famous, as some have been featured on The Travel Channel, one was actually mined by Tiffany’s Jewelers and some have famous ge-ologists on staff. Don’t miss the annual North Carolina Mineral and Gem Festival held the beginning of August each year. This four day festival features dealers from across the country selling gems, minerals, crystals, fossils and of course beau-tiful fine jewelry. A must stop in Mitchell County is the Museum of NC Minerals, located in Spruce Pine and adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
