Club History

Going back to the late 1950’s you would see on this site an unused dam, empty but deep, lots of wildlife with rabbits doing their best to elude the wily ginger fox that lived close by, abundant bird life, and an interesting world of adventure for boys and their dogs. As more housing went up and a small shopping centre was developed in Norman Avenue some locals came up with a proposal to develop part of this reserve and create a Bowling Club. A Public meeting was held in May 1962 to gauge local interest in forming a Bowling Club and this was met with an enthusiastic response. Donations were made and collected by a steering committee who set to work. They attended Council meetings and lobbied councillors to progress the proposal and finally they received a response that if the committee could raise $2,500 pounds the council would loan the money to complete the construction of the green. All kinds of functions and social events were organized and attended from as far afield as Mornington at a time when there were no made roads, footpaths, drainage or sewerage on Yamala Park Estate. With the money raised and an agreement to rent the land from the council work got under way. Fortunately roadwork’s had started on Olivers Hill and surplus soil was purchased from the contractor and the dam filled. After a year of consolidation professional assistance was sought and the Green installed, some can still remember the families out on site with wire mattresses stretched across poles sifting the soil that was purchased from the Frankston tip. On the 2nd of March 1964 the first committee meeting was held and attended by 60 financial members, 35 men and 25 women where the Foundation President J Gloury, Secretary S Barter, and Treasurer T Ward were elected. The Green was officially opened on the 16th of September 1965 with representatives of the RVBA and PBA in attendance which set off a week of celebrations ending three years of hard work. Yamala Park still has this atmosphere today where members and visitors enjoy fun and laughter and great camaraderie where visitors and new members are all treated like part of the family.
