Read up on electrostatic precautions before proceeding

You may even want to consider wearing an antistatic wrist strap

I will continue to repeat this, power off and unplug the DX7 before starting *I personally did not choose to wear an antistatic wrist band during the installation.

Step 1:

You will need to remove 5 screws in order to open the DX7. Four screws are located on the top face of the DX7 circled in red in the photo above and one is located on the back beside the power switch. Remove these screws using a phillips head screwdriver. ****************************************************************** Be sure to unplug the machine before working on the inside, the voltages inside have the potential to be very dangerous! ******************************************************************

Once all 5 screws have been removed lift upward on the hinged DX7 face to open it.

Step 2:

Now that the DX7 is opened, locate IC14 and IC15. They are very close to the internal battery and are marked in the photo above with a red box around them. Also on the circuit board they are marked with IC14 and IC15 in white silkscreen. One side of IC14 has a notch in it as shown in the photo above. Make note of the orientation of the notch on IC14 as you will need to install the Special Edition ROM with the same orientation. *This guide does not cover older models which have both IC14 and IC15 chips installed; it only covers models which only have IC14 installed as shown above in the photo. Step 3:

Time to remove the original ROM chip IC14 from its socket. Using a flat head screwdriver, gently pry up slightly on one side, then pry up the other side of IC14 ROM chip. Continue to pry up on one side, then the other side, until you are able to remove IC14 from its socket. It is a good idea to take your time and gently pry in order not to bend any of the pins on the original IC14 ROM chip. Set the original chip aside.

Step 4:

Now install the Special Edition ROM into the IC14 socket making sure that the orientation matches that of the original with the notch on the correct side as shown in the photo above.

Step 5:

After installing the Special Edition ROM close the DX7, plug it in, and power it up. The LCD upon starting should show the message "WELCOME TO DX7 SPECIAL EDITION" as shown in the photo above. Install the screws back in place. The installation is now completed.
