Yale University, Central Power Plant Expansion New Haven, CT The Central Power Plant at Yale University provides chilled water and steam for the Central campus and Science Hill areas of campus. The existing plant consisted of 9,000 tons of chilled water production, two 120,000 lbs/hr boilers generating steam at 225 psig and 18 MW of cogeneration. Due to campus expansion in the Science Hill area, additional cooling capacity was needed. WM Group Engineers provided design engineering for expansion of the Central Power Plant which includes the installation of a new 5,600 ton steam turbine driven chiller and surface condenser, new cooling towers, and associated pumps and auxiliaries. The new surface condenser and 30-inch condenser water header serving the new steam turbine chiller was installed in an extremely tight space in the basement. Because of the existing column configuration in the basement, WM Group worked closely with the equipment manufacturer to ensure the new surface condenser could be installed with minimal structural modifications to the existing column layout in the basement. Project Completion date: September 2001 Total Project Construction Cost: $ 12 Million Total Extras : Less than $ 3,000 [email protected]
