Sudoku Quiz SolutionDo You Remember Charles Hill?

‘How are you today? How’s your tongue? Is it smoothand red, or knobbly and beige with an overcoat ofmuddy hue? And how’s the stomach. Is it firm andsteady, or somewhat warm or a little wobbly and atrifle windy? Or was your Christmas Day so Spartan, that today you're fighting fit with no twinge ofremorse? Well, a word on indigestion…?These were the type of words that Dr Charles Hill, would deliver in his fruity, rotund, man of the peoplevoice, from May 1942 to 1950. He was known as theRadio Doctor, and was fondly listened to by aroundfourteen million regular listeners every Fridaymorning, just after the 8am news. Constipation wasa regular topic and Hill’s favourite remedy was ‘thoselittle black coated worker’s, known as PRUNES!!.He was a qualified Doctor and later Secretary of theBritish Medical Association, He became a Tory M.P.and Anthony Eden appointed him as Postmaster-General, which put him in charge of the BBC. LaterDr Charles Hill became the Chairman of theIndependent Television Authority from 1963 to 1967.He died in 1989 at the age of 83.As a youngster I used to love listening to him on theradio with that wonderful voice and I expect some ofyou can remember that voice as well as I do.The Regal Man

Fun Food for Little folk with ‘The Food Fairy’.Children can sometimes be difficult to feed, but this inexpensive, quick and nourishing recipe is easy to prepare andcook.

Savoury Rissoles. Serves 3-4 people.

You will need:-

2 large potatoes

1 large carrot

1 small onion

Diced swede( about equal to the amount of carrot)

Flour and seasoning

Dried or fresh herbs

2 Thick slices of bread (for breadcrumbs)

1 egg and a table spoon soy sauce, beaten together.

Peel the potatoes, onion and swede, scrub the carrot. Chop potatoes, swede, and carrot and boil together in asaucepan until tender.

While they are cooking chop and fry the onion in very little olive oil until soft

When the veg is cooked drain the water off. Add the cooked onion to the saucepan and mash together. Mix in thebreadcrumbs, dried herbs and the beaten egg and soy sauce. Bring it all together. If your mixture is too wet at thispoint add flour until you can shape it easily.

Make the mixture into sausage or burger shapes then coat with flour in all sides. Using your frying pan, with a littlemore oil if needed, Fry on each side until golden brown. Put on kitchen paper for a minute to soak up excess oil.

Serve with a poached or fried egg, or you could use sausages or bacon. Finish off the plate with a spoon of bakedbeans or sweet corn or peas.

Most children enjoy this meal and you can vary it using different vegetables in the rissoles or serving with differentthing each time. This is a very flexible recipe so have fun and play with it to create your own rissoles.

A delicious Pasta dish coming up next month.

Stephanie Stewpot is taking a rest from providing our monthly recipes, so ‘The Food Fairy’has stepped in to fill the gap. Stand by for some culinary magic, although you might need alittle imagination to feel the magic!

The choir, slightly reduced in number, sang some special Christmas items and joined with a largeaudience to sing some favourite carols. There were also solos, duets and quartets from choir members.Alan Heard took the solo verses in “When a Child Is Born”, a very lively rendition of “Jingle Bell Rock” was performedby the ‘two Bobs’, Messrs. Metters and Franklyn. The quartet of Messrs. Alan Heard (Bass), John Theobald (Baritone), Mervyn Colwill (2nd Tenor) and George Jose (1st

Tenor) performed a version of “Mary’s Boy Child” originally made famous by Boney M.John Theobald later performed a moving song entitled “Bellau Wood”, the words of which describe a Christmas Evetruce on a battlefield during the 1st World War. This performance was made all the more moving by the haunting soundof the harmonica, ably played by Barry Richardson. As always our Musical Director, Penny Barclay, and our accompanist, Alan Dawe gave one hundred percent support, and the choir are very grateful for everything they do to help us learn and perform new pieces and old favourites alike. We must thank Mr and Mrs Mappin for their generous hospitality, the mulled wine and extra special mince pies weregreatly enjoyed by all, and the beautifully decorated, warm and welcoming venue soon had everyone forgetting the windand rain outside. What a splendid way to bring our busy year of engagements to an end. Dates for 2014:*Saturday, February 22nd. Tintagel Orpheus Male Voice Choir Are you a man? Are you a singer? Would you like to sing? Don’t know if you can sing but would like to find out? Are you looking for a friendly group to join? Looking for a new interest? If you answer ‘yes’ to at least one of the above why not give Male Voice Choir a try? Seven years ago I tried it. Now I wish I had tried it 47 years ago! Seriously guys, we need more members for our choir. Come along and listen to a practice, have a cup of tea, and see what you think. We can be found every Tuesday evening at Tintagel Methodist Church Room from 7.15pm to 9.30pm. No frightening auditions, ability to read music not essential (but it can help of course). We are just a friendly bunch of guys who enjoy singing. Contact me for a chat and further details. John Theobald. (PR Officer) 01840 213558.

The cloud was dense, the sky was grey. The big, wide, billows hid the sun away. The air was cold and bleak, no warmth around,Then, slowly, silently, drifting to the ground, came snowflakes.Softly and gently on earth they alight, hiding the flaws with a carpet of white.Under this blanket the snowdrops lie. With the help of it’s warmth they search for the sky.In pale sunshine they blossom and grow. The flower’s my heart and your love is the snow.

St Teath Parish Council Report

Well, Christmas came, and went. I hope you all had a good one.Let us hope a Happy New Year will be had by all.I do, of course, have a wish list for 2014. I bet you know what is on the top of this list!To see an end to dog poo on all our paths and green spaces, to see people picking up litter, not dropping it, to neversee another car parked on the junction at High Street and Pengelly, (or on the pavement, zig zags or double yellowlines.)

You can help with this one. What can we do about the parking in Delabole and St Teath? Cornwall Council is still struggling with even more cutbacks, so looking to them for financial help is a waste of time. They just don’t have the money!

This problem is down to every one of us to solve.E-mail, post or text your ideas to me. Details below.Planning Applications considered at December meeting:PA13/10882. Work on a Sycamore tree in a conservation area. Overall reduction by 2.5m. Tower Farmhouse, St Teath.PC supported this application.PA13/10842. Work to trees subject to TPO. Namely, felling two mature Sycamore trees. Chy Ancarva, Pengelly, Delabole.PC did not support this application.PA13/10376. Barn extension covering hard standing to provide storage for machinery and hay/straw. Lower SuffentonFarm, St Teath. PC supported this application.Planning Decisions Received:PA13/08509. Construction of two storey side extension to house. 1, Charlottes Way, Delabole. CC approved in line withPC support.PA13/02789. Retrospective application for the stationing of a mobile home for residential use. Planet Park, Delabole.CC approved in line with PC support.PA13/09173. Conversion of integral garage to bedroom with en-suite.20, Park Pennkarn, Delabole. CC approved in line with PC support.PA13/09702. Front access improvements to allow level access to door and associated works. 3, Rockhead Street,Delabole. CC approved in line with PC support.Cornwall Council cut backs:As Cornwall Council seek ways to further reduce their expenditure they are withdrawing more services and Town andParish Councils are having to step up and investigate the possible take over of responsibility for some of these tasks.Your Parish Council took over Delabole Public Toilets and, thanks to a very conscientious and professional ToiletManager, they are now recognised as among the cleanest, best run, public toilets in Cornwall. This proves that a ParishCouncil can do as well, if not better, than the big boys at County Hall.We will consider taking on more ‘in house’ services as long as we are certain we can deliver a better, cheaper and moreregular service than that currently supplied by Cornwall Council.Spring is not far off and we have just had our allotment AGM. We always have a couple of plots waiting for a tenant, ifyou are interested in ‘growing your own’ contact me and start producing your own fresh vegetables, getting some goodfresh air and that all important exercise!

Delabole Community ChoirOn 15th December, Delabole Community Choir gave their Christmas concert in the Methodist Church. The programme waswide-ranging, with something for everyone to enjoy, including carols modern and traditional, and old favourites like Winter Wonderland and Let ItSnow. The audience members were also required to exercise their lungs and made a wonderful sound joining in with the choir singing some ofthe traditional carols. Carole Anne Lee entertained us mightily with some of her famous monologues. During the interval the wonderful refreshmentsorganized by Wendy Trewin and Jean Stewart raised a collection of £67.77 for the Merlin Centre.

We are still looking for new members, and are not exclusively a ladies’ choir; we are open to one and all – young people, mums and dads at homeduring the day, retired and older people, experienced singers and total beginners. We sing music in a wide range of different styles, you don’tneed to read music and there is no audition. We rehearse on Thursday afternoons from 1.30 to 3.00pm at Delabole Methodist Church (sideentrance, charge £3.50 per session). Singing has great health benefits and has been proved to boost your immune system as well as improvingyour sense of mental well-being, and we’re a friendly bunch so why don’t you make it your New Year’s resolution to come along and have somefun?!

Delabole Community Fund Raising Shop

Happy New Year! We hope 2014 will be a happier and healthier year for all and with December and the beginning ofthis year being stormy and wet, let’s hope some drier weather is on its way very soon.Once again, thanks to your continued support and money raised by the shop, we have been able to give donations tothe following:

The Delabole Slate Newsletter - to assist with the printing costs of the double Christmas / New Year edition. Delabole Hospital Car Service - towards the running costs. Their volunteer drivers take anyone in the village to

any medical appointment (ie between and including: Truro, Derriford, Bodmin and Bude). Delabole VIP (Visually ImPaired) Club - to assist with their drivers’ costs in picking up members and taking them

out once a month to meet up with other members. A lot of the members do not drive as they are elderly or partiallysighted and this enables them to venture further afield, outside of the village, and socialise.

St. John’s Church - to help pay for the costs of cutting the grass, hedges and general upkeep of the Churchyard.

Thanks to our generous customers who visit our shop (either to donate or buy items), our takings (before expenses) for: November came to £1594.69 December came to £841.10

If you wish to donate any items to the shop, please ensure you drop them into the shop whilst it is open - as items lefton the doorstep can easily be damaged or lost (especially with this recent stormy wet weather). The shop’s open fromMonday to Friday 10am to 1pm, except on a Tuesday when it’s open until 4pm and Wednesday when it’s open until3pm.

Chris (our manager) would like to say how much she appreciates the continued hard work contributed by all our volunteers- thank you once again. Also if you would like to join the team (all new volunteers are most welcome) please call in theshop and leave your contact details, for Chris to call you back and discuss further.Wishing you all a very happy Valentine’s Day.☺All the best.

A Methodist Minister’s ViewIn one of the monthly gardening magazines, which I was looking through recently, mention was made that somecommercial nurseries were increasing their growing of poppies in response to orders from local authorities and otherbodies. These bodies in planning their garden displays for 2014 are wanting to commemorate the outbreak of the FirstWorld War which was 100 years ago, in 1914. This anniversary will be commemorated in a number of ways throughtelevision programmes, the publishing of books and local events. Each commemorative approach will have its ownstory, and it is the stories which we will remember. Stories have proved to be a powerful means of communicationthrough the ages. As we hear or read stories from the era of the First World War doubtless we will be caused to thinkabout the issues of war and peace in our current times. Many generations of people have been challenged to learn through the stories of their culture. Some of you may recallsinging a hymn, which for me was found in the children’s section of the Old Methodist Hymn Book (1933 edition) the firstline reads ‘God has given us a book full of stories.’ The Bible has in it many stories which have been shared throughthe generations. The earliest stories in the book of Genesis cause us to acknowledge God as the Source of all life, andgoes on to deal with issues of right and wrong, the challenge to live in God’s way and other issues. Other stories cometo us from the years prior to the time of Jesus and cause us to think about human nature. Jesus himself drew on thesestories, and was himself a master teller of stories which caused people to think and ask themselves what the story meantfor them. Just recall the stories of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10), the Seed Sower (Matthew 13) or the Lost (Prodigal)Son (Luke 15) as examples of stories which cause people to think even in our generation. Many stories have withinthem enduring truths. Some stories from the modern day should cause us to think as well. In the closing weeks of 2013 we heard of the deathof Nelson Mandela, and saw the exuberant ways in which his achievements in life were celebrated by the people whowere the beneficiaries of his work, ideals and sacrifice. A film about his life will shortly be released which, if you are ableto see it, will cause you to think and reflect. The challenge to all of us is to be people who are searching, questioning, thinking and reflecting to find the ways tosatisfying, fulfilling and worthwhile living. There are always new things to discover in our searching and pondering.

Every Blessing,Bryan Ede

And Now It’s 2014Putting the decorations away after Christmas! Don’t you just hate it? However, atChapel we had willing helpers and suddenly it became not too bad - especiallywhen one of the helpers has a birthday the next day and there’s a chance to sing, blow out candles and eat goodies. So when Patricia (for it was she who was thebirthday girl) sat down with a cup of coffee after the ‘Happy Birthdays’, she startedtalking about making the new rotas for the year - people to steward, arrange flowersand so on - Marion said, ‘I suppose I could stand in the porch and welcome peopleas they arrive on a Sunday. But what exactly do I have to do?’Quick as a flash her good pal Marie, who knows Marion’s friendly nature so well, came back with the reply, ‘Well for a start you can’t have a full blown conversationwith everybody ‘cos the service starts at 11 o’clock!’

We’re thinking about the year ahead and the Family Breakfasts are goingto continue. January’s was really successful with ten children and their parentsenjoying (I hope) bacon, boiled eggs etc and the chance to talk with their friendsover the breakfast table. The next one’s on Sunday Feb 2nd at 9.30am,so maybe you’ll be able to join us? Helen

P.S. At January’s Community Lunch we had the bright idea of celebrating our 151stChapel Anniversary by having a LUNCH after the morning service (led by Rev Aubin de Gruchy, Chaplain at TruroSchool). Not sure what’s on the menu yet but the date is 9th March and there’s also a visit by Holman Climax Choir at7.30pm.

Patricia, Marie, Marion and Barbara after arousing chorus of Happy Birthday.

Christmas seems a long time ago now, but it’s not reallyas this is written early in January. But the Christmas partyin December was enjoyed, I think, by all, with time for chat, mulled wine, food and the committee did a pantomime. There was much laughter by all including the cast – someof whom hadn’t practised at all – which was perhaps aswell as they might not have taken part otherwise. Our next meeting on 17th February will be Karen Daveygiving us a demonstration of Lampshade making, whetherthis includes hands-on, we as yet don’t know. But if you’veever tried making a lampshade or want to then this is thething for you. Come along and see how to do it, and thengo home and try.The New Programme which starts in May is in the planningand there are lots of interesting things being planned forthe next W.I. year, hopefully I shall be able to mention afew next month.Do come along and see if W.I. is for you, there is alwaysmuch chatter, always tea or coffee and biscuits, as wellas the opportunity to see and hear a speaker – most ofwhom have interesting stories to tell, and with thedemonstrations there is always the chance to learnsomething new.If transport is a problem just give me a phone call.

I ’ mashamed to admit that I’ve never been to the fireworksaround the clock before this year.10 to midnight and there was hardly anyone there and thensuddenly the place was packed, Auld Lang Syne wasbelted out and fireworks (which were magnificent) filledthe air.Thank you so much to all who organised and financed - itwas brilliant and you should be proud of yourselves!

Christmas - Remember That?

Brilliant idea not to have a ‘Slate’ inJanuary, else it would be a hectictime just around Christmas trying toget the edition ready. However, itdoes mean that lots of things thathappened in December getoverlooked. Our celebration started at thebeginning of the month with the St.John’s and Chapel Christingle and

Toy Service, when each member of the congregation was presented with aChristingle and a goodly amount of toys was collected for Action for Children, food for the FoodBank and toiletries etc for St Petroc’s.That same week we enjoyed delicious turkey and Christmas pudding at theCommunity Lunch. These happen on the second Tuesday of most months andif you’d like to join us at the Methodist Chapel, you’d be most welcome. To seewhat’s on the menu, glance across at the plans for the year - you could even

cut this out and keep for future use andreference! It was great to welcome parents and friends intothe chapel when they used it as the venue forthe Community Choir and the School Carol Concerts.Sunday 22nd saw us all appreciate Sue Ede leading our morning worship, whilst in theevening we shared a village Carol Service at a packed St. John’s Church. There wasmore ecumenicalism later that week when Christians in the village gathered together afterthe Crib Service and sang Carols outside the Spar Shop. What a good job that Rev. Bryanwas there to lead the singing!Christmas morning worship led by Rev. Bryan, captured the joy of the season with partypoppers and the sharing of good things (chocolate). Helen

Garden Stories from Cedarcroft - FebruaryHello, and welcome to our first chapter of 2014. I love this time of year, full of hope and the promise of another greatgrowing year. It is the very challenge of making a garden grow, the satisfaction of seeing our results come to fruitionand learning from our mistakes, that makes gardening such a great activity. Here at Cedarcroft we will be opening ourthird show garden on 22nd and 23rd February. Pop down to listen to our garden designer and get some greatinspiration. (See our advert for full details)

The JobsSnowdrops look stunning in carpets around the base of shrubs and in borders and are a welcome sign that spring ison its way. If you want to spread them around your garden then now's the time to lift and divide clumps and replantyour new plants wherever you want. Prune back shoots on mophead and lacecap hydrangeas to a pair of buds.Spread a thick layer of mulch around fruit trees and shrubs. Plant bare root roses, fruit bushes, trees and fruit canesinto enriched soil. Prune blackcurrants, cut out a quarter of the old woody stems from mature plants. Sow the followingcrops in pots or trays in the greenhouse, ready to transplant outside later: Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage, cauliflower, onions, leeks, lettuce and salad leaves.

Creative Activity,Bring an exotic touch to your patio, deck, or yard by making a small water garden in a tub. Use a plastic or glazedceramic container or a plastic-lined, wooden half-barrel as the container, and add aquatic and marsh plants, andperhaps goldfish, for color and drama. Add two bunches of submerged plants, one floating plant, and one or twomarsh plants per square yard of water surface to keep algae in check. Plants should cover 60 to 70 percent of thesurface.

Old garden titbitsUse chamomile tea to control damping-off fungus, which often attacks young seedlings quite suddenly. Just add aspot of tea to the soil around the base of seedlings once a week or use it as a foliar spray. Cinnamon makes anexcellent natural fungicide. Mix in your potting soil when planting seeds to prevent damping off of the seedlings.Gently brush your hands across your tiny seedlings several times a day. This stimulates them to grow slightly slower, resulting in stronger, sturdier stems. To turn a clay pot into a hose guide, just stab a roughly one-foot length of steelreinforcing bar into the ground at the corner of a bed and slip two clay pots over it: one facing down, the other facingup. The guides will prevent damage to your plants as you drag the hose along the bed. Egg cartons make excellentseed starters. Punch a hole in the bottom for drainage, fill with potting soil, plant your seeds and watch them flourish.

Happy gardening from Penny and Sarah………………Cedarcroft Plants St Tudy

The mess left behind by dogs and their neglectful ownersis not a nice topic and few things do more to give dogowners a bad name. In our village alone there are anumber of desperate residents that have produced theirown dog poo signs to get the public; possibly even theirfriends or neighbours, to clean up after their dogs. The problem in Delabole appears to have increased withthe dark nights but this is no excuse (take a torch withyou!) and the worst areas include -

Outside the school - who could leave this for thechildren to step in?Quarry footpath - dog waste bin in car parkVell Lane - outside the residential properties and allalong the lane. Waste bin available at the Cemeterycircle.Westdown Road verge - someone with a very large dogis not picking up along here!Playing field grass verge - bins available at both ends.Pengelly Road - on the pavement outside people’shomes! Would you like it outside your gate?

Update 14/1/142 lots beside the bin at the CemeteryMasses around the Quarry footpath2 lots on the pavement along Pengelly1 very large deposit along Back Lane

Please be a responsible dog owner or walker bycleaning up after your dog. You should be setting anexample and contributing towards a healthy and safeenvironment for the rest of us and your children.
