H O W A R D U N I V E R S I T Y

It is a great honor for the Office of Tutoring & Learning Support Services (TLSS)

to host this year's Howard University Second Year Experience - Mecca-Made (SYE)

initiative as a part of Lumina Foundation's HBCU Student Success Project.

We are excited about meeting and supporting each of you as you determine

how to best navigate through this integral year of your college experience. Your second year of college largely

determines the likeliness of your retainment and graduation. Thus, the Office of Tutoring & Learning Support

Services is here to provide hands-on, real-time academic support to help assure you graduate within 4 academic

years, or less, here at Howard University.

TLSS is the division of the Office of Undergraduate Studies that organizes and implements academic support

services such as tutoring, life skills workshops (in collaboration with the Office of Career Services) and College-

Readiness workshops during the Fall and Spring semesters for all students. We continuously gauge the academic

needs of Howard students, which in turn informs what programs and services we put in place and how best to

deliver. As a result, we offer free drop-in, individual or small group tutoring for all gateway mathematics courses

and selected general education courses such as: Algebra, Biology, Calculus, Computer Science, Chemistry,

Economics, Physics, Statistics and more!

We offer a full range of student success workshops that are specific to the academic and personal

development needs of Howard students such as: Time Management, Setting Goals, How to Prepare for Midterms

and Finals, and Test-Taking Skills, just to name a few!

Throughout the year, we are motivated to help you move "Upward and Onward to Academic Success". We

want you to know that you have access to staff whose sole purpose of service is to provide you with the

academic support you need and the best academic support we can offer.

The Howard University Second Year Experience is our way of meeting you where you are outside of tutoring

services and workshops. We want you to be informed and motivated about your college experience. With that,

SYE provides you with information about resources and opportunities throughout campus that will not only be of

interest to you, but will support your academic journey.

The purpose of this booklet is to serve as a mini-guide to your success here at Howard, including that of events

planned for the Second Year Experience - Mecca Made. Take a look and hold on to it for future reference.

We look forward to the upcoming events we have planned for and with you. Thank you for allowing us to serve

you, and we'll see you soon!

BENEFITS OF WRITING GOALS

BENEFITS OF TARGET DATES FORREACHING GOALS

I REMEMBER AS I WRITE MY GOALS(Writing crystallizes thought- thought motivates action)

To avoid the tendency to list a dream or goal according to

the “value” I think others would place upon it.

To ask myself “Is it Worth it to Me?”

To set short-range goals that build towards my

long-range purpose.

To set goals that are just out of reach,

but not out of sight.

To state my goal positively- visualize myself having already

attained each goal.

MY ATTITUDE

To be so strong that nothing can disturb my peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person I meet.

To make all my friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make my optimism come true,

To think only of the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and

give every living creature I meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of myself that I have no time to criticize others.

To be too large to worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,

and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.MY ATTITUDE…IS MY LIFE.

I PROMISE MYSELF
