IGCSE English Language and Term 1 & 2 - Controlled Assessment Coursework
1 •Assignment 1: informative, analytical and/or argumentative.
2•Assignment 2: imaginative, descriptive and/or narrative.
3• Assignment 3: a response to a text or texts chosen by the Centre. The text(s) should
contain facts, opinions and arguments. Candidates respond to the text(s) by selecting, analysing and evaluating points from the material (reading objectives R1–R3). They may write in any appropriate form they wish.
Firstly, you will talk for about 3-4 minutes on a single topic or theme which has been selected by you. The talk should be continuous and there should be no need for your Learning tutor to prompt you. Your talk needs to be as lively as possible so you are advised to talk about something you have a personal interest in. You are allowed a single ‘cue card’ of postcard size to remind them of the main points to make. A script is not allowed.Your Learning Tutor can offer advice on topics but cannot be involved in the preparation of specific material for the task. You are advised to research your topic in detail and practice the delivery of your presentation several times.
Preparing your Talk!
Some examples:
Conspiracy theoriesCosmetic surgeryShould parents encourage belief in Santa ClausRacism and PrejudiceForced MarriageParanormal PhenomenaThe Harry Potter series vs. The Twilight seriesThe rapper, Eminem and his impact on societyThe positive and negative development of Social MediaThe art of lyingWatches and what they say about the wearerFirst impressions and the Science behind it.
Following on from your 3-4 minute talk you will have a discussion with your Learning tutor on the same topic, therefore you will need to have a really good understanding of the thing you are talking about and be prepared to express or defend a point of view. You will be asked open questions that will allow you to give longer answers. This might be an important consideration when choosing your topic, think of a subject matter that would allow a discussion to develop.
Deadline: October Break
By the October break you should hand in a brief overview of your speech explaining what your talk will be about and what subtopics
you will cover.
