Y ur SPARWelcome to Your SPAR

There are marketing themes and PR opportunities aplenty this summer.

The Jubilee is behind us now. (Keep your bunting, you’ll need it later). Apart from the televised national celebrations, communities worked hard to stage local events and there were many opportunities for your SPAR shop to showcase your support for your customers.

The country is about to go sports crazy……………………..

Football’s Euro 2012 kicked off on Friday 8th June, with a Group match every day until Tuesday 19th June with England v Ukraine at 7.45pm on ITV1.

Will England make it through the Group stages?

The Quarter-finals are from Thursday 21st to Sunday 24th June, all at 7.45pm.The Semi-finals are on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th June at 7.45pm.The Final is on Sunday 1st July at 7.45pm.

If England are on their way home before the Semi-finals you may just have time to replace your displays of Carlsberg, Lucozade & Mars with Robinsons & Evian ready for the start of the Wimbledon Tennis Championship on Monday 25th June. The concluding Men’s Final is on Sunday 8th July, weather permitting.

Fresh from cycling the length of Britain, Nick Kenworthy may be persuaded to complete a lap of another country in the Tour de France which starts on Saturday 30th June and finishes in Paris on Sunday 22nd July.

But that’s only the build-up to the next event – the Fourth of July. No, not the Independence Day SPAR spangled banner you already have in hand, but the big one, the SPAR Wessex Guild Golf Day at St Mellion. If you haven’t already entered then contact Liz by email [email protected] or phone 01752 854011 for your booking form.

That gives you just 3 weeks to prepare for the biggest sporting event of the summer. The London Olympic Games opening ceremony is on Friday 27th July and if you make it over the finishing line, the closing ceremony is two weeks later on Sunday 12th August.

Remember, we said you’d need to keep that bunting, it’ll be worn out by now.

So you’ve kept your store topical through the summer, informed and entertained your customers and most importantly had lots of fun. What do you do with all the cash you’ve raised for charity? To pay into the SPAR NSPCC account:

By cheque: Make your cheque payable to the SPAR Charitable Fund. Send the cheque to Kerry Emery, SPAR UK Ltd, Hygeia Building, 66-68 College Road, Harrow, Middlesex, HA1 1BE. And PLEASE include details of which store you are from and how you raised the money.

At a bank: Go to any branch of Nat West and pick up a banking paying in slip. Fill in the following details: Account name: SPAR Charitable Fund. Sort code: Harrow 60-10-10. Account number: 19230400. And again let Kerry Emery know which store you are from and how you raised the money.

Make the most of your sporting chance for sales, the weather will come good, “drier and brighter periods may become more prolonged, especially in the South“, it doesn’t get any better or more certain than that…………..

Dorset SPAR store owners Mark and Paula Oliver have helped their local church raise £457.59p at a Jubilee

party in the village.

When St. Mary’s Church in Sturminster Marshall approached the SPAR store for a raffle prize for the Jubilee party, the couple agreed to donate all the flour and eggs the local ladies needed to bake cakes with.

A plant sale was set up in the store’s car park along with a cup cake stand and a main marquee selling larger cakes.

“It was a great day and created lots of interest from my customers and people who were travelling past the shop,” said Mark. “We attracted lots of new customers on the day who belonged to the church.

“Lady Birchenhoff, the Jubilee Committee Fundraising Chairman, said it was a

fantastic day, and they even made me 25 red, white and blue Jubilee cup cakes to sell in the shop as a way of saying thanks.”

Mark and his wife Paula took over the former Londis store in Sturminster Marshall six years ago, having run a SPAR store in South Africa, where Mark’s parents were also former SPAR Retailers with the symbol group.

Couple Help Jubilee Fundraising

Hello All,

We must have had every type of weather in the past few weeks, rain, wind and glorious sunshine! The good weather definitely helped with sales in the store and the Jubilee weekend also had a great powerful impact.

But it’s going to be a busy summer and so it’s already time to look ahead to what’s next? Euro 2012 has already started and hopefully Roy and the boys can give England a good run. As long as they are in the competition football fever will be hitting the country, so ensure you are stocked up with beer and soft drinks, as well as snacks and meals like pizza. Make sure you also don’t forget Father’s Day on Sunday 17th June. If you have a red themed stand, then ensure your new Father’s Day themed kit is on display and the stands are filled with stock.

Last year I spoke to you all about how I was looking to install LED lighting throughout the shop. Well, in November we took the plunge and completed the job. We have been extremely pleased to find that in the first 6 months alone we have saved £818 and hope to have greater savings over the summer. The main advantage of LED lighting is that they are zero heat and are actually cool to the touch. We’re hoping that because of this we won’t need the air conditioning unit on as much this summer, but only time will tell!

As you may have seen a few issues ago we have implemented the Our Best Price throughout the store and have removed any additional enhancement, as well as selling at the RSP. We have found the best results on:

Coca Cola 330ml Can - 70 units per week up to 130 units per week

Locozade 500ml Orange - 25 units per week up to 55 units per week

Echo Falls White 75cl - 5 units per week up to 25 units per week

As you can see this is a massive improvement for our store and it’s something we can all implement. We should all be supporting Appleby Westward on this range so that they continue to increase the range further and make a real difference for our customers.

All the best,

Stephen Jinks

A major capital investment scheme to convert a former West Bay night club into a large

SPAR convenience store has created eight new jobs in the area.

The scheme, a co-investment between the family owners of Burton Bradstock Cars and Appleby Westward, involved the conversion of the former De Vinchie’s nightclub building.

The project has created a 2,500 sq. ft. modern SPAR store, a smaller shop next door, two 3-bedroom flats above and parking for 25 cars. Four full time and four part time staff have been recruited to help run the new convenience store.

Saj Vij, who runs Burton Bradstock Cars in Cliff Road, which has a SPAR forecourt store, bought the nightclub site last year from a property developer. “It’s a very prominent site in West Bay Road and when it became available, I knew it would be an ideal location for a SPAR store,” he said.

“Appleby Westward agreed, and their specialist team has created a state-of-the-art convenience store to the very highest SPAR specifications, representing a flagship store to serve the local community and the influx of holiday makers to the area.”

The store will have a large food-to-go area and locally produced products with a Costa Coffee bean-to-cup coffee machine, a substantial chilled and fresh foods selection which will be adapted regularly to cater for seasonal demand, a wide range of beers, wines and spirits, news and magazines, National Lottery, Paypoint and an array of promotional offers on a large selection of grocery products.

Staff from the Burton Bradstock SPAR

store have been helping train the new employees at West Bay.

Saj moved the Burton Bradstock forecourt store business to SPAR six years ago when he decided it was time to redevelop his 300 sq.ft. shop which was underperforming at the time. Along with Appleby Westward, he redeveloped the business to create a modern 1,100 sq.ft. store, providing a convenience shopping service to the village and surrounding area. “It has become a very popular place for people to shop locally since we carried out the improvements, and we have won a couple of food hygiene and safety awards in that time as well,” he said.

“When it came to choosing a partner to develop the West Bay site, I had no hesitation in continuing with SPAR. The brand name has worked so well for us at Burton Bradstock where we have a cracking operation and I had every confidence in the Appleby Westward team’s ability to build a great new store.”

There was also a family fun day, held to celebrate the opening of the store, with food and drink tastings, raffles, face painting and a host of other attractions on Saturday 9th June.

A couple have been hailed as “one in a million” and nominated for customer service awards by

shoppers using their Cornwall SPAR store.

Kevin and Debbie Haysom run the village store in Constantine and their strong focus on customer service has drawn tributes from customers.

One, Wayne McCarthy from Felixstowe in Suffolk wrote to SPAR head office in praise of the service Kevin and Debbie had provided his elderly cousin in Port Navas, three miles from Constantine.

Wayne’s cousin, who sadly died recently, became confined to his home due to

illness and was no longer able to drive himself to the local store. As a result, Wayne approached the store to see if they could help with regular deliveries.

“I could have gone to one of the major supermarkets, but because of Kevin and Debbie’s fantastic warm attitude and realistic pricing, it seemed sensible to see whether they could help,” wrote Wayne.

“Both Kevin and Debbie were only too willing to help out. I was able to supply them with a list for regular delivery, email or phone when I needed to make any changes and was always met with a positive, keen to help and friendly attitude. Kevin said he

regarded his customers more as friends – what a difference to so many other stores I have come across in my years.”

Wayne added that not only were the Kevin and Debbie helpful, but their delivery man Paul also came to the rescue, calling an ambulance when he was concerned about Wayne’s cousin’s welfare and telephoning him to update him on his situation.

“During regular visits to my cousin and talking to local residents, I only had to mention Kevin and Debbie at the SPAR and did not come across anyone who had a bad word to say about them,” said Wayne. “People said they always go that extra mile to help people around here.

“Kevin and Debbie are one in a million, the backbone to the survival of rural communities and so valuable in this day and age in an area which has a large elderly population. These are people who really care about their customers and go all the way to look after them in their hour of need.”

Another customer, Gillian Turnbull, contacted SPAR customer relations to see if the company ran any awards for outstanding customer service.

“I have been shopping at the SPAR in Constantine for the last seven years and have always had exceptional customer service from Kevin and Debbie,” she wrote. “If ever there was a couple who ‘go the extra mile’, it is them. They are always helpful, considerate and friendly, while staying totally professional in their approach.”

To the left you can see Vince Brown, Head of Sales presenting the award to Kevin and Debbie.

Wine Tasting LeadsTo Huge Sales Boost

A SPAR store in Hampshire has seen a huge sales uplift after staging a wine tasting evening on the back of

the successful Wine Festival promotion.

Howard Toms, who owns the store in Eastney, Portsmouth ran the event with help from his RSM Mike Burnett. Between them, they dressed the store in red, white and green, set up a wine tasting table with cheese and nibbles, and made sure the local community knew what was going on.

Sales on the evening were 74% up on normal takings from wine. Especially popular were the 3 for £10 deals on the Falcon Valley and Straw Hat ranges,

and Mike was busy all evening letting customers sample wines from the promotion.

Howard said: “It’s events like this that put us above what the multiples do. I have had great customer feedback about the day. It was cold and overcast but still people came out and that proves what we do works. On the back of this success we are planning another evening in October.”

Retailers needing any help organising a fun day or wine tasting event should contact their RSM for support.

A fundraising fun day was held at the SPAR forecourt store at Lapford Cross as part of an ongoing

programme to raise money for the local village school.

The store staged the event to raise funds for the Lapford Community Primary School and local schoolchildren put on a display of singing and dancing to get the day underway.

As well as children and staff from the

school, visitors throughout the day included the local vicar, police, fire and ambulance services and even a farmer feeding lambs and other livestock.

There were also food and wine tastings, a painting competition and a raffle to boost the fundraising effort.

The store is one of four SPAR stores run by Goss Bros Ltd. in the South West. Sales and operations manager Mark Barrett said: “It was a great day, the sun was shining,

everybody enjoyed themselves and it was a great opportunity to strengthen our links with the local community. We are delighted to be supporting the local school in their fundraising efforts throughout the year.”

Visitors complimented the store owners on the quality of the hard working staff and the teamwork displayed by everyone at the store during the event.

Julian Holliss, who runs three SPAR forecourt stores in the South Hams area of Devon, has taken part in a challenging triathlon to raise funds for charity.

Julian, who has previously taken part in other endurance fundraising events for charities, took part in his latest challenge to raise money for CLIC Sargent and the Derriford Children’s Cancer Service (DCCS) after being touched by the story of Kingsbridge schoolboy Ben Baldry.

Two years ago, Ben collapsed on his way to school and was diagnosed with a brain tumour, for which he underwent a year of chemotherapy and intensive treatment.

“Ben’s family had to put normal life on hold while they looked after their son, and were supported throughout by two inspirational charities in CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancer charity for children and young people, and DCCS,” said Julian.

Julian and three friends completed a tough triathlon at the beginning of June involving crossing Devon from north to south – a distance of 130 miles - in a day. They cycled from Foreland Point on the north coast to Totnes, then paddled down the River Dart to Dartmouth for 11 miles before finishing with a 20 mile run/trek along the south west coastal path to Prawle Point, the most southerly point in Devon in just under sixteen hours. Julian’s

daughter Jemma joined the party for the final leg and completed the rugged coastal run in just under 5hours.

Anyone wishing to support the effort can still do so via the on-line fundraising page http://www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/coasttocoastdevon

Julian is Director of Holliss Filling Stations, a family business operating three SPAR forecourt stores at Townstal Road Garage in Dartmouth, California Cross Filling Station near Modbury and Totnes Cross Filling Station at Halwell. He has previously been involved in some epic fundraising events. He has run in excess of 25 marathons and numerous ultra marathons.

NSPCC Visit The SPAR Tradeshow 2012

Lord Mayor Of Plymouth Launches New Services at NSPCC Centre

The NSPCC were delighted to be invited to attend Appleby Westward’s SPAR Tradeshow

on Thursday 3rd of May to engage with Retailers and suppliers and talk about our partnership with SPAR.

Now in its 7th year, the partnership between the NSPCC and SPAR is going from strength to strength in the Appleby Westward RDC. The Tradeshow gave both parties an opportunity to discuss fundraising plans for the coming year and for attendees to be updated on new projects and initiatives the charity are undertaking.

The NSPCC explained about their new NSPCC Plymouth Service Centre, which was opening later that month, to help some of the most vulnerable children and families in and around Plymouth.

On the day of the Tradeshow two

members of the NSPCC team, Appleby Westward Corporate Account Manager, Karen Drew, and Community Fundraising Manager, Donna Statham, visited suppliers and asked if they would be willing to each donate an item to enable a hamper to be created to raffle on the day. The result was overwhelming and people were very generous. Tickets were sold to attendees and raised £173.86 towards Appleby Westward’s fundraising total for the year.

The winner of the prize, a supplier on the day, simply took one box of chocolates then very kindly donated the entire contents of the hamper back to the charity. All of the items will be made into smaller hampers and raffle prizes by the Community Fundraising team for events throughout the year.

Finally, the NSPCC we were given lots of ‘leftover’ sweets and biscuits from kind

suppliers such as Haribo, Ferrero and Burtons Biscuits which have since been given to NSPCC volunteer groups, saved for the NSPCC HACK event this September and given to the NSPCC’s ‘Young Person Participation Group’ members in Bristol, Swindon and Plymouth.

On Tuesday 29 May the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Michael Wright, launched the new NSPCC Service Centre based

in the heart of the city. The services offer cutting edge child protection programmes.

The centre is one of forty across the UK which will deliver a range of support for children and families. Services delivered from the NSPCC centre will focus on working with children, young people and families to prevent sexual abuse. The new services delivered from the centre are:

Letting the Future in which provides • therapeutic services to help children move on with their lives after sexual abuse

Change for Good - a structured • treatment programme for boys aged over 12 who behave in a way that is sexually harmful.

Assessing the Risk: Protecting the Child • - a guide that helps professionals assess the risk posed by abusers who have not been charged or convicted of any offence.

Service Centre Manager, Jacky Moon,

said: “The NSPCC has operated services in Plymouth for many years and we’re very pleased to be able to continue that commitment. The organisation makes a huge difference to the lives of children across the UK and the centre will help us to expand our work and pioneer new approaches to address the child protection problems facing local children.

The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Michael Wright, said: “I fully support the work of the NSPCC and these new initiatives. Too many children have had their lives ruined and find it hard to move on and the provision of the therapeutic services will prove to be very helpful.”

The NSPCC and Childline relies on the generosity of members of the public and business supporters for the majority of its income.

The majority of the funds that Appleby Westward and our stores raise will be spent within the South West. Local Fundraising for a Local charity.

To set up a “Meal Deal” you can refer to the relevant page of the SPARpoS User Guide or for further assistance , please do not hesitate to contact the Retail IT Department on 01752 854065.

How to catch the customer’s eye – Using all the POS that is available you can create an eye catching, yet effective display within your chilled area.

There is colour coded stripping for the different products so customers can see clearly what is on offer. Stickers help to highlight specific products and side fins help the deal stand out and draw your customer in. Outside your store we have posters to help promote this Meal Deal. We also have banners which are available on request. Great for larger stores and forecourts.

In your P3 & P4 Promotion Book there is a planogram guide to help you display this Meal Deal effectively and a list of which products are available for the Lunch Meal Deal.

If you would like some crisp baskets as shown in the P3 Promotion book, please contact Daveena Patel at Walkers on 01189 383131

If you require any further information about this huge opportunity or haven’t received your Lunch Meal Deal POS, then please contact your Regional Sales Manager.
