In October 2017 the City of Cornelius was awarded a generous grant from Metro, our regional gov-ernment, to create a new Cornelius Town Center Plan that will
encourage a revitalization of our down-town through new development stand-ards and incentives, as well as public investments. Over the past seven months we have been out in the community asking what you would like to see in a re-imagined downtown district. We spoke with community groups, met with resi-dents at community events, and present-ed at various meetings and engagements. We also sought input through two online surveys. Based on all of what we heard, we have begun to craft early concepts of how our Town Center district may form over the coming years. But we want to know if you, our residents, feel like we’re heading in the right direction. So please join us on: Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 6 pm for a community meeting at Centro Cultural (1110 Adair Street). We will review and discuss preliminary design concepts for our Cornelius Town Center Plan that have come out of our conversa-tions with the community. This will be an opportunity to review our interpretations of our residents’ preferences for the Town Center district. We hope to hear feedback from attendees, which will help us improve the concepts as we work through plan development. Light refreshments will be served. For more information please contact Ryan Wells, Community Development Director, at (503) 357-3011 or [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you there!
PlanetCon 2019
Community Recycling &
Swap Event
PlanetCon 2019 will be held January 12th from 11am-2pm at Quatama Elementary School, Hills-boro and provides the opportunity to recycle many items that are not normally picked-up by your regular waste hauler. These include string lights, household batteries, elec-tronics and small appliances, plastic bags, Styrofoam and other items. Learn more at: [email protected]. In addition, there will be a holiday décor swap, repair event, winter coat donation collection and an op-portunity to learn more about re-ducing waste and other sustainable practices. The event is being spon-sored by the Westside Master Recyclers.
Winterizing Tips
Where to Begin: Residents should start
by looking at the exposed water lines
coming into and running throughout
their home. These can be found in the
basement, bathroom and kitchen any-
where water flows, for example, in a
garage or basement. If exposed water
lines aren’t insulated, residents can
easily buy a few tubes of pipe insula-
tion at the local hardware store and
install it at little cost. Insulating these
pipes will dramatically help but are not
a guarantee to prevent freezing. Exteri-
or walls have pipes that can be at a
greater risk for freezing and bursting.
Fortunately, there is an easy fix: having
pipes run on a slight drip while the
temperature is below freezing could
help avoid these issues. It’s a great idea
to help avoid frozen pipes as it keeps
water flowing and helps prevent them
from freezing.
Heading Outside: When it comes to the
water lines that run outside a home,
residents should be conscious of the
risks those pose as well. Even some-
thing as minor as leaving a wa-ter-filled
hose outside when cold weather ar-
rives can cause problems. It’s im-
portant to shut off all water to outside
spigots, flush any remaining water be-
fore the temperature drops below
freezing. If a resident has an under-
ground sprinkler system, that needs to
be flushed out as well. Wrap backflow
devices with insulating ma-terial.
Of course, winterizing should include
more than taking a hard look at a
home’s plumbing. There are plenty of
other ways residents can make sure
their property is ready for harsh winds,
frigid temperatures, snow, ice and all
the rest. A little winterizing research
can go a long way. This can not only
help avoid major issues, but it might
save a bit of money as well.

The #9PMRoutine is here. Have you seen or heard about the #9PMRoutine on social media? It's become a popular and simple way for folks to protect their home and property. Every night at 9:00pm, we encourage the community to lock up property, turn on lights and bring in valuables to reduce the likelihood of falling victim to property crimes. This campaign has proved vast success throughout the country and we look forward to imple-menting it in Washington County.
- LOCK UP your car, house, windows, garage, gates and shed.
- TURN ON exterior lights, security cameras and alarm system.
- BRING IN valuables from your car, yard, patio and porch.

local. El aislamiento de estas tuberías
ayudará enormemente, pero no es una
garantía para evitar la congelación.
Las paredes exteriores tienen tuberías
que pueden estar en mayor peligro de
congelaciones y reventones. Afortuna-
do de congelación.
