8th Grade’s Community Service Project – Support of the Last Frontier’s April 19, 2019 Honor Flight

Today, a wonderful celebration occurred in which an $8000 check was presented by MEA Charitable Foundation (MEACF) Operation Round-Up Chair David Dahms along with the 8th grade class to The Last Frontier Honor Flight. Four students from the 8th Grade, Dillan Vierra, Carolyn Deal, Richard Washer, and Madeline Ortiz, gave speeches expressing the positive impacts of this project on their lives. Colonel John Deal, Retired US Army, shared a few comments from an 8th grade parent’s perspective on the positive impacts of this project. First-Grade Facts . . . [email protected] We entered words into our Spalding books this week!!! We also finished up learning all five jobs of final, silent e! After our Thanksgiving break we will start our spelling tests … it was delayed with our ice day. Math has been all about reviewing the different strategies for adding (counting on, starting with the larger number and using a number line) and then learning about doubles and near doubles. Thank for signing up for our Family Feast … I look forward to seeing everyone. Be on the lookout for December happenings! I am waiting on a final date for our Special Santa field trip and will let you know ASAP about that and our gingerbread house making day! Thankful for all of you! Betsy Mayer

The class completed our writing on school rules. They wrote an introduction sentence and supporting sentences. Super job kids.

We finished our props for our skit. We are now practicing using them. Keep practicing the poem this weekend!

In math, we are still practicing our 2- digit addition. We did work with wipe off boards on lining up ones and tens. They created their math problems.

Thank you for signing up for our Family Feast. Mrs. Holler will post the list we have so far. Let her know if you would like to sign up for anything. The kids are super excited to have family in.

It is a next week will be a short one, no spelling or math homework. Enjoy!!

Have a relaxing weekend! Mrs. Booth [email protected]

Holler for Reading!

This week in reading the students continued to practice their skits about the "Smart" poem. They had a fantastic time creating characters and props. They have also been working diligently on an alphabetizing page. It was challenging as well as rewarding once they began to master it!

Holler for Math!

We finished Chapter 3! The students did an excellent job on learning and practicing double digit addition. We will continue to revisit this skill throughout the year. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs. Holler [email protected]

Please forward any Family Feast

for yearbook photos.

This week Kindergarten worked on final silent e. It has 5 jobs, but for us the most important is when it changes the vowel to make its second sound; changing cap to cape and pin to pine. We also learned the phonogram ou as in out, soul, you and country. We will work more on that next week.

In math, we continued with subtraction. The students have done a wonderful job. We also worked with our counting collections. The students have been counting collections up to 60 items! I am very proud of their efforts.

Remember that our homework is reading at home and sending in your bear paw each week.

Please feel free to contact me any time.

Benbow’s Fourth Grade Buzz

Winter is definitely here, and students need to have the

appropriate clothing to wear out to recess. Please make sure that

your child has a hat, gloves, a warm jacket, and snow pants.

Please make sure that your child gives you the information about our

Community Service Project with the Kids Kupboard. We need volunteers

and money for supplies! A new letter was sent home Thursday with

information about our schedule next week. Thank you to those of you

who have sent in your money and/or will be volunteering!

Language Arts – Our focus this week has been organizing our writing.

We spent most of the week writing about the things we are thankful

for. We continue to work toward having a great introduction backed

up by plenty of details and a solid conclusion.

Math – We are getting a lot of practice with division! We will continue

to review multiplication, multiples and factors. We begin every class

with timed multiplication practice because the automatic recall is

essential to success in fourth grade math. Please make sure your child

has time to practice multiplication facts at home as frequently as

possible; all of our work from this point on will use these facts.

Tommy Turkey! The kids are doing a fabulous job getting into character. We will have two showings of Tommy Turkey on the 21st. Please come for the 10:20 showing and/or the 11:00. Family Feast will follow and then it is early release.

Spalding this week went well. We are still getting used to everything being in cursive. With no school Monday and then pictures during reading on on Wednesday we got a little behind on our comprehension book. The class was still able to complete it all and they did a nice job working independently. No spelling or comprehension book next week.

We finished chapter 2 in math this week. The test results were pretty good. Many students chose to keep their test here for their portfolios but scores are posted on iparent. We will not have math next week because of Tommy Turkey. We will begin chapter 3 after the Thanksgiving break. Mrs. Weetman [email protected]

The Manley Minute [email protected] Language Arts:

Due to the short week and my absence on Friday, we did not have a spelling test this week. Instead, we took this opportunity to give our monthly 50 word test. In class, we finished reading The Chocolate Touch and wrote essays on gratitude. The students were very happy to write their essays on three things they were thankful for. Next week we will have our service project with the whole group so there will be no spelling list next week.

Math: We finished our chapter 3 test and entered our vocabulary for chapters 4 and 5 into our math notebooks. We have learned the Associative and Commutative Properties but will learn the Distributive Property of Multiplication in the near future. We completed a preteaching lesson on two digit by two digit multiplication. The purpose of this lesson was to front load information to the students so they will be more familiar with the process when we learn the process after break.

We have many Multiplication Masters! Wow! Thank you for encouraging your child to practice at home. This is a HUGE help for math class.

Kile’s Kiddos

In language arts we completed our last words list until after Thanksgiving. We continued to explore the rules of Spalding and enter them into our notebooks. No spelling list was sent home today. They will have one upon their return to school after the holiday.

In math we completed Chapter 2 - Addition Properties. We will begin Chapter 3, Subtraction, after the holiday.

Tommy Turkey is really looking good. Students are engaged and working hard to make the best show ever. Hope to see all of you next Wednesday at one of the performances.

LA: This week, students broke into literature groups, chose a Sherlock Holmes story to read, and worked on and completed their very own Literature Circle Packet. They found challenging words, created questions, and even wrote a summary of their story. Students also began writing an in depth character description of the main characters and created a wanted poster for their villain.

P.S. I gave the students a “missing report” and a little time to fix missing work.

MATH:Wow! these kids are math WIZARDS! After some review, they were ready and eager to tackle the chapter test. They rocked it! We did such a great job that we decided to hop right into chapter 3…. Division!!!

P.S. I gave the students a “missing report” and a little time to fix missing work.

PLEASE continue to help your student master their multiplication facts- it will make them feel a lot more confident as we traverse the rest of the year.

Have a great weekend!- Mrs. Real

Mrs. Richardson’s Language Arts

We have completed Jonathan Swift’s epic travel adventure, Gulliver’s Travels. Students were asked to identify evidence of major themes during in-class discussions. We also evaluated the author’s purpose for sending Gulliver to two distinctly different islands with such different people inhabiting each island.

As we head into a season of thankfulness next week, 5th grade will be doing several whole-class activities together while our 4th graders spend time working on service projects for Kids Kupboard. It is a blessing to work with your children. Thank you for the great work you do as parents, community members, and school volunteers!

Hello Families!

This week in art was fantastic! The 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders have been immersed in their Core Knowledge studies! The 3rd graders are studying Native American Artworks. They are working on designing their own Navajo inspired patterns. The 4th grade students are investigating textiles from Africa. The 5th grade artists are building boats while they investigate the European Explorers. Look for these fantastic projects to come home soon!

The Third graders have finished their Land form unit. They used their packet to create landforms in Play Dough. It was fun.

The Fourth graders practiced plotting latitude and longitude points on a map. Then they played a game with this concept.

The Fifth graders did complete their Geo Bee this week. I will tally the results when I return on Monday. If there are run offs to be made, I will be complete those next week.

**Next week Nov. 20th the Fourth graders will be starting their Geo Bee.

K-2 Science

Kindergarten was introduced to the 8 planets in our solar system.

First and second grade reviewed the order of the planets. Second grade had them down on the first try! A lot of time was spent answering questions about the Mars rovers and other astronomical events with the 2nd grade.

They had some great questions that were worth the time to research and answer.

4th grade frog dissection is scheduled for April 2, 2019.

5th grade fetal pig dissection is scheduled for April 3, 2019.

6th Grade Reading – This week, we continued

reading The Black Ships Before Troy, by Rosemary

Sutcliff. The chapters are much shorter in this book

than in our previous one, which is providing more

time to focus on writing quality responses that

restate the questions and use complete sentences to

add details from the text. You might notice that

answers are being marked wrong even if the

information given is correct; this is because I am

providing the information and where to find it in

the book. My expectation at this time is that words

from the question are being used in the complete

sentence answers. As always, if you have any

comments or concerns, please feel free to email!

Vamos con Señor Reilly Spanish with Mr. Reilly)

We discussed travel and going to language school in Guatemala. Students compared going to one school as opposed to another, for example the differences in prices and what type of accommodations were being provided. Students are doing research comparing and writing a few paragraphs about these schools. We also practiced a new dialogue using new vocabulary and we reviewed our fluency with the alphabet, which always helps students to decipher any new words they encounter in the proper way to pronounce words.

Have a great weekend with your family!

Sixth Grade

Thank you to Mrs. Johnson for coming in this week to speak to the kids about the importance of good dental hygiene. We are always looking for great parent volunteers who want to help out with an intensive, elective, or ...? Just let us know!

Students should be continuing to work for a short while every day on numerous ongoing assignments and homework: memorize the Declaration of Independence to present to the class by December fourth, memorize basic operations to a high level of fluency on QuickTables before Christmas break, weekly master 10 new math topics and review "forgotten" topics from knowledge checks in ALEKS. Work not completed in class is considered homework, due the following day.

Our students are highly encouraged to redo any assignment or quiz that has not reached the mastery level of 80%. Assignments turned in on time can be redone up to 90%. Work turned in late does lose 10% the first day, 30% the next day and all points after that so getting work turned in on time matters a great deal for grade percentages.

Any questions or concerns? Please stop by.

Wright 7th LA: We focused on debate research and speech formatting this week. Students practiced their flowing (note-taking) techniques, did research on our two propositions and began a mock class debate over movie theaters and candy. On Thursday, a coach from the nationally ranked Seawolf UAA debate team gave a presentation on strategy and research tips for our upcoming debate competition in Anchorage. Please watch for a letter coming home about this great opportunity for your student at Romig Middle School on Dec. 15.

Wright 7th math: Chapter 5 is all about ratios, rates and unit rates. We'll be learning and practicing conversions and staying organized in our work. Students should be working steadily on their ALEKS topics. Ten are due each Monday.

Wright 7th history: Students learned rudimentary causes of WW1, and practiced their Europe maps. With the borders changing in this area of the world throughout the rest of our studies, several quizzes will be given to help students stay grounded for the action. We also finished up our Russian Revolution biographies.

All hand-outs and assignment hard-copies are on Google Classroom or ConnectEd for math. Have a great weekend - Mrs. Wright

Around the World in 180 Days (7th grade History with Mr. Reilly)

We have been discussing imperialism at different periods in history, including present day imperialism. Since this is one of the causes of WWI, it is important for students to see how this led to the beating of the war drums. Students drew a map reflecting the big land grab, in Africa, that went on in the years prior to the war. They color coded the continent showing how most of the land had been claimed. We also worked backwards from the end of of WWI, since last Sunday was Armistice Day; the day guns fell silent. Students watched a couple of clips from the video about Sargent York, a Medal of Honor recipient.

Write On! - I introduced the five elements of Fiction to the class. Then we used a book that they have all read last year in sixth grade, The Outsiders. We worked together to cobble our characters together. each character had at least five descriptions about the person's. So, we kept trying to find what was important to our story. As a class we also identified the setting and we discussed the theme. Now students are doing the same process with the book, which they have been reading, To Build a Fire. Enjoy your weekend!

RAMIREZ REVIEW

SCIENCE: We are embarking on the study of cells for the rest of the semester. In order to see cells we must use microscopes. So this week we are learning the parts of the microscope and how to use them. Students will be expected to know the microscope parts by the week after Thanksgiving. Please help your child study by doing the online quiz posted on our google classroom page.

MATH: This week we continued our study of percents. We practiced calculating sales tax & tips by ordering menu items from a restaurant. We also did some holiday shopping using coupons and calculated final prices on our items. Students are doing a great job with this skill. Please put them to work at the store or restaurant to calculate prices or tip amounts. ALEKS topics are due again this Monday, please keep up the good work! Thank you for the opportunity to teach your students, I enjoy being with them every day.

8th Physical Science

On Tuesday, we covered the basics of motion in Ch. 9. Wednesday was spent calculating the average speed of various toy cars with and without added weight. The chapter was assessed on Thursday. The class did not meet on Friday.

Algebra 1

With the short 3-day week, we spent the time reviewing the first four lessons in Chapter 4 to refresh the concepts from before the break and intensives. This chapter is essential for success in this class. Mrs. Tompkins

Real’s English 1 Even though this was abbreviated, we still managed to cram some learning, reading, and writing into our class. First, students have chosen their final POL poem and have been practicing and performing it. Final presentation will be before our long holiday break. Next, students completed reading Steinbeck’s novella, The Pearl over our break. They used stickie notes to mark literary elements, and are using them to write an analysis of the book. We also practiced literary elements vocabulary in a variety of ways. We will have a test 11/19.

DON’T FORGET-to practice POL.

Have a great weekend!- Mrs. Real
