March 2012
2012 is going to be a B.I.G. Love year! We are bringing the Annual Fun Run to Pearland, Texas, opening the new B.I.G. Love office near the Medical Center, and introducing dynamic group and private counseling services to our cancer families. We are ready to make a real impact in our service and love to our cancer kids and families like never before!
If we have not met, I am Kevin O'Malley, Director of Development for B.I.G. Love. I am mar-ried to Melanie, and we have five beautiful children. Our oldest son, Jonathan, was diagnosed with AML Leukemia August 2008 at 16 years of age. This is how we came to know B.I.G. Love. Jonathan was the first patient to ever receive services through B.I.G. Love’s grocery program! Over the past three years, we have come to love this organization for its grassroots level of
focus on families like ours.
We would often say amongst ourselves that we were looking forward to the day that Jonathan was well enough so that we could serve with B.I.G. Love in a complimentary way. I never imagined that I would be asked to be on staff. Yet, here we are!
I will be working closely with our Board of Directors and our incredible volunteers in our efforts to serve our cancer kids and families in a B.I.G. way! This includes speaking engagements at churches, local businesses, and community groups, raising funds to ensure that our all-important services continue to be provided, fostering relationships with hospitals, and creating community awareness of B.I.G. Love and childhood cancer.
Providing grief counseling services to families has been a priority and goal of Chaney and Jessica’s from the very beginning. With the opening of a B.I.G. Love office in Houston, we will be providing grief groups and private counseling services to address a very important and relevant need. Emotional struggles such as depression, anger, anxiety, grief, and stress, to name a few, are unfortunately common place for all our families whose lives have been interrupted by childhood cancer, to one degree or another.
I am a PCCCA certified counselor, with 14 years of experience, providing counseling services from a positive, Christian perspective. All of our group and private sessions will be held at the B.I.G. Love office, and private sessions will also be available at my office in Pearland.
A new B.I.G. Love monthly E-Newsletter will be sent out each month, beginning this month, to those on the mailing list. This newsletter will feature stories of kids and families we serve, up-to-date news, needs, and opportunities. Please help me raise awareness by asking people in your network to sign-up for our newsletter. It's free!
In this newsletter and in the e-newsletters to come, you will learn of some exciting opportunities to help B.I.G. Love this year. One of those opportunities will be B.I.G. Love’s Grand Opening and Bal-loonFest at our new Houston-based B.I.G. Love office and counsel-ing center. With a little help from you, we will raise $10,000 with this event! We also have many opportunities for our Sponsors this year. Learn more inside.
We are very excited to be a part of B.I.G. Love and are looking forward to serving our cancer kids and families with you. Feel free to contact me anytime if there is something I can do for you.
God bless,Kevin O'Malley

PURPOSE
In honor and memory of the children and families we serve and have served in conjunction with the opening of the new B.I.G. Love office in Houston, raise $10,000 for the new B.I.G. Love Houston office, private counseling services, and group format counseling sessions (i.e., grief, anger, stress) provided to our families. Provide our Board members an opportunity to personally share B.I.G. Love in their personal networks and be active participants in our fund-raising efforts.
IMPACT
This effort will expose and directly involve a minimum of 1000 people in our community to B.I.G. Love and potentially become regular financial partners.
ACTION
This effort will be accomplished with a team of 20 people (our Board members and active volunteers). Each of these 20 people will sell 50 balloons at $10 each, thus raising $500. The balloons will be branded with B.I.G. Love website and information. Each team member will be given 50 balloons, each attached to an event postcard that outlines the power of a $10 donation. They will be given the opportunity to release their balloon from wherever they are on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 1PM. At that time, those who have gathered at the Houston office for its open house, (10:00am – 2:00PM) will release 250 balloons from our parking lot.
MEDIA
Hoping to have Kevin Reece from KHOU Channel 11 do a story on this event, featuring B.I.G. Love’s new office and counseling services.
PROMO MATERIAL
(1) 1000 gold balloons, imprinted, (2) 1000 printed postcards from Vistaprint, (3) Helium tank

Meet EMMALEE...There is one thing I know for sure about Miss Emmalee-
she loves B.I.G. Love, and we love her! After a series of weekly clinic visits, the Doctor
repeatedly gave Emmalee the same news, “You get to go home today. No chemo!!” Although Emmalee should have been delighted, she became more and more disheartened
each week until finally she broke...and began to cry big tears. Emmalee’s nurse was completely shocked and
asked, “Why are you so upset, Emmalee? You get to go home.” Emmalee wiped the tears from her face and
said, “If I go home, I don’t get to see B.I.G. Love. Can I please stay here?”
The next week, Emmalee was admitted to the hospital (she was so happy) and we got to visit with her...
and on her Birthday no less. What a celebration she had.
This is a simple story, but one that let’s us know we are fulfilling our vision...to bring them joy, make them smile
and love them up!
