It’s the classic bad news/good news story: bad news first. “Alabama has one of the highest percentages of couch potatoes in the nation,

according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”The Birmingham News reported: “The CDC found that Alabama residents

— along with residents of Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Tennessee — are the least likely to be physically active during leisure time.”

The good news is local: Jefferson and Shelby Counties, our primary service area, partially dispel those percentag-

es. Shelby’s inactivity is rated the best in the state, at 24.4 percent; Jefferson County’s is 29 percent.

“In our southern culture, hallmarks of hospitality are food and rest, so we are working against our nature to begin with,” said Lisa Jones, senior vice president of the Birmingham YMCA. “We believe that there are terrific ways to leverage this tradition and to help make the healthy choice the easy choice.”

She’s right. Those encouraging numbers, along with our vision “to lead our community to become the healthiest in America”, are a great start.

We’ve got your numbers at the YMCA, and in this issue! Group activity of all kinds begins the day you join us. Pathway guides make sure that you meet your health and wellness goals by connecting you to other members. Dee Watts talks about the process on page 5.

In our branches — a lucky 13 of them — there are groups for every kind of activity, for every age group; really, for every reason that you belong to the YMCA. Beginning on page 10, meet the new evening circuit class at our new-est branch, in Alabaster. Concrete-walled courts offer group “ball” play; kids are in motion in at the Vestavia Xpress Branch, and diabetes prevention groups have popped up at six branches; couch potatoes no more! Plus, volunteer groups are the lifeblood of leadership for the association. Find out about the group that oversees our education, marketing, and communications.

And if you are really in the mood for groups, click here online: ymcabham.org/programs. You can find a listing for every group at every branch. That way you can find your own strength in numbers!

In our branches - a lucky 13 of them - there are groups for every kind of activity.

Checking In News from around the Birmingham YMCA

Annual meeting marks historic firsts

Over 100 volunteers and staff descended on Vulcan Park for January’s 2010 Annual Meeting. Two women were elected to the top volunteer posts.

Phyllis Hall, a longtime corporate board member and Downtown board chair, was elected President of the Corporate Board of Directors, taking over for Steve Smith who finished his two-year term. Ann Huckstep, former Mountain Brook Board Chair and Corporate Board Member, was elected chair of the Board of Trustees.

Bringing community together to make a bigger, better Alabaster YMcA a reality

Key leaders for the City of Alabaster - including the Mayor, county officials, Chamber of Commerce representatives and more - gathered on Thursday, January 27, to kickoff

the campaign for an even better Alabaster Family Branch. The vision is to add to the already overflowing branch and help it become a vibrant hub for the community. The ‘new and improved’ Alabaster YMCA will grow to include:

• Youth center• Gymnasium• Swimming pool• Community meeting space• Expanded child care

400 Thank you’s from 5,300 tots! Each of the almost 400 volunteers who helped with

the 2010 Toys for Tots campaign, brought holiday presents to 13 young people!

In all, 5,300 children, from over 4,000 families throughout Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Walker and Blount Counties woke up to a very Merry Chrismas, a result of the hard work and generous spirit of the Birmingham YMCA and the community at large. On behalf of the 4,000 served in 2010 - thank you.

New Board President Phyllis Hall, second from left, takes over the the position held by Steve Smith, far left, from 2008-2010.

Dee Watts is the Pathway Guide at the Shades Valley Family Branch.

Lose weight and gain a healthy life.New weight reduction program debuts

1. We Support You and Your Healthy DecisionsPathway guides are your support team when you make the decision to join the Y. We don’t just give you a tour of our facilities - although that is an important part of our job - but we want to know what your focus is and your reason for joining so we can better help you meet your health and wellness goals.

2. Where Everybody Knows Your NameWhen you join the Y and take part in the Pathway program, we will not let you be anonymous and become lost and overwhelmed. Your Pathway guide stays in touch with you through the good and bad, making suggestions, listening to your fears, and cheering you on to victory!

3. We Can RelateAs Pathway guides, one of our strengths is our relatable nature. I’ve been in the same spot many of you are in right now, so I know how hard it can be to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle and how intimidating taking that first step can be. That’s why we don’t want you to face this challenge alone. Remember, there is strength in numbers.

Affordable, comprehensive weight loss program – at weekly meetings you will have a private weigh-in, have access to an online weight loss tool with diet and physical activity tracking logs, participate in health and physical activity assessments, and receive a customized diet and activity tips.

Focusing on changing old habits, recognizing stumbling blocks and finding ways around them, the support of a group of friends and a YMCA lifestyle coach will guide you towards accomplishing your goal of a healthier lifestyle...for life.

The Express Circuit Class focuses on strength training in a fast-paced and fun manner while emphasizing friendship and camara-derie among class participants. This class has helped me re-commit myself to challenge my exercise routine. I get bored fast and the monthly switch of stations keeps things fresh. Being in a group setting inspires

me to be my best and support others as well. Big ‘thanks’ to Carol for pushing us to do better every session we show up!”

Kids in MotionBranch Vestavia Xpress BranchLeader Christina Flanagan-Saunders, Kids In Motion ManagerWho can Participate Non-Member and member Children ages 5-13. interesting fact Kids In Motion is a grant-funded program that teaches children about the human body and how to ensure a healthy lifestyle through diet and exer-cise. On a Thursday night in February, for instance over 24 children crowded into the Vestavia branch to learn about how the heart works and how activities like run-ning on the track help the heart remain strong and healthy. When can You Do it Tuesdays & Thursdays | 5:30 p.m.What They’re saying

Our family needed to get healthy, so when I signed up at the YMCA in October, I immediately wanted to get the children involved. Kids In Motion is a

wonderful program. We have met great families and made friendships; plus the children have now gained knowledge about healthy eating and active living.”

Cover Storyhandball Branch Downtown BranchLeader Unofficially, Don Boomershine, who has played handball at the Downtown YMCA since 1958, although others in the group may dispute that assertion. Who can Participate Anyone, but it helps if you can take a little joking early on. Newcomers and novices welcome.interesting fact Handball used to a be a popular sport played by adult men throughout Birmingham, particularly the old Five Points Branch and Downtown, from the 1950s through the 1970s. Now, the five or six men who play regularly at the Downtown Branch are among the remaining - and stalwart - handball players in the city. When can You Do it Most weekday mornings | 10 a.m. in the racquetball centerWhat They’re saying

BY THE NUMBERS

Handball isn’t the only sport played on the four concrete walled racquetball courts at Trussville, Downtown, Shades Valley, and Greystone. There are several games you can play with just two people or with a larger group of friends.

racquetballtruSSVIlle, dowNtowN,ShAdeS VAlleY & GreYStoNeWhile the game has diminished in popularity, many branches are seeing an upswing in the sport. All you need is a racquet and little blue ball, and even if you don't have those, you can borrow them from your neighborhood branch. Also, check the bulletin boards for tournaments and even racquet-ball lessons at Greysonte.

WallyballdowNtowN & truSSVIlleWallyball is a fast-paced sport where the walls are in play and the rallies are long. Evening groups are getting started at the Trussville Branch, but the group that gets together at at noon on weekdays at the Downtown branch has been playing for over a decade. Newcomers are welcome and encouraged to try it our, but be warned: you will most likely

be given a nickname and, more than likely, you won’t like it. You hear that Court Jester?

squashdowNtowNAt the far end of the racquetball cen-ter at the Downtown Branch lies one of the few remaining squash courts in the city. The game is similar to rac-quetball, but with these differences: the court is smaller, the ball is smaller, it doesn’t have the bounce that a racquetball has, and the racquets are longer. Otherwise, the game is a great way to keep in shape and to enjoy time with a few friends.

The Birmingham Y produced a number of outstanding players such as Brewer Kitchens, Jack Dorsky, and Jeff Barnes on the National Level, and Pat Rookis and others on a regional level.

But, there is a story about Bill Culp and Bobby Lapedus who played several times a week for years, with one stipulation. Bobby said, ‘Bill the first time you beat me is the day I clear out my locker and leave the Y.’ Well, one day Bill beat the crafty old veteran who left the court, and never played again.”

cPr/AeDThe program is designed to prepare individuals to respond to life-threatening emergencies through a combination of online (web-based) lessons and traditional instructor-led training. Blended Learning participants complete the knowledge portion online at home and at their own pace, and then demonstrate those learned -skills in a skills session that is available at your local YMCA.“Blended” learning is self-paced, to remove the pressure of learning

or relearning the information in a short period of time. You control how long it will take you to go through the information. After you complete the online portion, you will then come into a skill session class and perform your learned-skills. Depending on class size, this is about one hour.REGISTRATION begins when you call the Aquatics Director at your neighborhood branch.

if you’re looking around to join a collection of fun-loving people and be a part tight-knit group, look no further than the water aerobics class at your neighborhood branch.

Whether it’s Stephanie’s early morning class Downtown, or the mid-morning class at Greystone, chances are you’ll never see a happier bunch of people.

Take for instance the morning water aerobics class at the Shades Valley Family Branch. Four days a week almost two dozen ladies converge on the indoor pool to move to fun music, splash around in the water, and deepen relationships that have been built over years.

“The friendship is wonderful. It’s not only good for the body, it’s good for the brain,” said Freda Welch, a water aerobics participant for over 15 years. “It’s good therapy to be around people and with friends and exercise at the same time.”

Freda says she was encouraged to join the water aerobics class in 1995 and enjoyed it so much that she has been coming to class four days a week ever since and even makes time when class isn’t in session. “We don’t have a teacher on Thursday, but a couple of us girls will come and just paddle around and try to get a little exercise,” Freda says.

And that’s the best part about this group of ladies. It’s more about the camaraderie; the time spend together laughing, getting healthy and, perhaps most importantly, encouraging each other. For class participant Olivia Farrior, the support she has been given from her classmates has led to her achieving goals she never thought possible.

Olivia started coming to water aerobics eight years ago despite not knowing how to swim. In fact, Olivia admits she was afraid of the water. Wanting to better enjoy her new activity, Olivia took lessons and learned how to swim, an accomplishment that has improved her help and self-esteem as well.

“Learning how to swim and staying involved in water aerobics classes has helped me tremendously. I’m diabetic and was on insulin,” she adds. “Now, I’ve been able to come off of insulin, so it’s really paid off for me in a big way.”

Not only did Olivia learn to swim, but she also began competing in Senior Olympics games, winning some awards for her newfound athletic skills, thank, in large part, to her supportive friends in the Shades Valley water aerobics class.

“Everybody really encouraged me because it took me so many years to learn how to swim,” Olivia says. “So I’ve become involved in senior Olympics swimming, when I was afraid of the water when I started out in water aerobics eight years ago.

“All these ladies are my friends and I look forward to coming over to the Y to be with them,” Olivia adde. “They’re all so friendly, lovely and kind that I just look forward to coming.”
