I can tell you exactly where I was when Irealized the world was ending. I was in a gas station— a BP Amoco — filling up the Bentley, buying aSlim Jim and a pack of Camels, and getting thatlook from the cashier like, “Who drives a Bentleyand eats Slim Jims?” I glanced over at the porn rackbehind the counter, the high opaque kind thatcovers everything but the top quarter of the maga-zine. I could see the faces on a couple covers and Ithought, “Huh. Club has a cuter cover girl thanPlayboy does.”

And then I realized the world was ending. Not just“going to end,” which I’d known forever. That it wasending, that the end had started, that the end wasn’tnear or nigh, but now.

It wasn’t the porn mags that tipped me off, ofcourse. I’m just being a smartass. I felt the imma-nent eschaton with senses that humans generally

don’t have. You might get a taste of them here orthere, when you have a sudden feeling of dreadright before the phone rings with bad news. Or thatshiver that runs down your spine for no reason thatyou can divine.

There’s a reason for it. It’s just that most peoplecan’t decipher the meaning. It’s like a fish looking at anewspaper. He can see the letters as well as you or me,but it doesn’t tell him jack shit about UN resolutionsor global warming.

What I felt was a clamor of calling souls, a multi-tude of spirits invoking me, imploring me, calling mein searching and desperate tones.

I heard voices I’ve known for aeons, voices fromthe dawn of time. I had gotten well used to the vaguesusurration of pleas, but in an instant they wentfrom a murmur to a blaring blast. Where they calledme from the edges of existence before, now theyshouted from as close as the cashier. That was what
