The Training Institute is a two day program in which each participant becomes a member of a group for the entire period. The Institute provides an opportunity for 12 hours of intensive experiential learning as well as theoretical discussions relevant to the experience. Of the twelve groups being offered, three focus on psychodynamic group process and nine address specific approaches to working with groups. While the group experience promotes personal as well as professional learning, this experience cannot be considered psychotherapy. The leader’s role is that of teacher, rather than therapist. It is anticipated that there will be considerable interpersonal and intrapersonal learning. Unless otherwise indicated, each group will be limited to a maximum of 12 members.
Leaders have been selected for their demonstrated expertise in clinical group psychotherapy, experiential training, and the special focus of each of their groups. Leaders will meet individually and as a staff with members of the Institute Committee to review the progress of their groups. All groups will be observed by a member of the Institute Committee, and their observations will be discussed with the group leaders.
We hope to reach out and include many young people who will become the new generation of group therapists. Several of our institutes will focus on topics that address issues vital to the city of Oakland and beyond, including race, income inequality, and gender.
To be eligible for the $50 Discount, the Institute registration fee must be paid by April 15. Institute meals and coffee breaks are included in the registration fee.
PRE-INSTITUTE – FRIDAY EVENINGPrior to the beginning of the training institute, participants will have the opportunity to gather their registration materials and for an extra charge, enjoy a dinner on site. At 7 pm that evening, all those who have registered for the Institute are invited to attend a special screening of Karina Epperlein’s documentary film, Finding the Gold Within (GoldTheFilm.com). This is a ground-breaking film that offers its audience an opportunity to intimately experience a long-term, large group conducted by older black males that supports black male youths from 12 to 20 years of age. Both the individual and group-as-a-whole narratives reveal poignantly the risk entailed in coming out of invisibility. As group members, these courageous young souls share their efforts to set out on their own paths and to withstand a challenging constellation of racial and other prejudices. The filmmaker will be present and two group leaders will facilitate the discussion that follows.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS
D. The Use of Metaphors in Bridging Difference
Alexis D. Abernethy, PhD, CGP, Fellow AGPA Professor of Psychology Graduate School of Psychology, Fuller Theological Seminary Pasadena, CA
Groups provide a rich context for interpersonal learning through attunement to one’s own story and others’ stories. Metaphors may serve as a bridge for creating common ground that allows for exploration of cultural differences. Members will share their stories, attend to others, and gain techniques for bridging differences.
E. Whose Lives Matter in the New Multicolored US?
VeLora J. Lilly, PhD, LCSW Clinical Psychologist, Private Practice
Participants will explore the unique life challenges of various ethnic/cultural groups living in the US or arriving in the US as refugees who may seek professional services from predominantly white providers in a system with limited preparation to address their needs. Members will examine how their own life experiences assist or impede their ability to empathize with these clients. The underrepresentation of diversity in the helping professions and possible resolutions will also be addressed.
F. Healing the Wounds of History: Unearthing and Transforming Generational Trauma through Drama Therapy
Armand Volkas, MFA, MA, MFT, RDT/BCT Clinical Director, Living Arts Counseling Center Director, Healing the Wounds of History Associate Professor, California Institute of Integral Studies
Healing the Wounds of History is a therapeutic process in which experiential techniques facilitate uncovering and transformation of generational and historical trauma. Participants learn methods for containment, exploration and resolution, from the individual to the collective level, using drama therapy, psychodrama, sociodrama, Playback Theatre and Transactional Analysis. Shy clinicians welcome!

G. Psychodramatic Family Therapy
Judye Hess, PhD, CGP, Clinical Member AGPA Professor Emeritus, California Institute of Integral Studies Private Practice, Berkeley, California
Participants will experience psychodramatic family therapy, a method created by Judye Hess, described in her book, Core-Focused Family Therapy: Moving from Chaos to Clarity. This approach allows participants to deal with deeper family issues even when members are no longer alive or available for contact. A useful adjunct to individual and group therapy.
H. Gestalt Group Therapy: A Relational Approach to Healing, Integration and Change
Peter H Cole, LCSW, CGP, Clinical Member AGPA Co-Director: Sierra Institute for Contemporary Gestalt Therapy Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry: UC Davis School of Medicine
Daisy Reese, LCSW, CGP, Clinical Member AGPA Co-Director: Sierra Institute for Contemporary Gestalt Therapy Adjunct Professor: The Wright Institute, Berkeley CA
In this experiential workshop we will explore a relational approach that uses the group process to promote self-activation, intimate connection, and the integration of opposites or polarities that exist within each of us. Teaching of key concepts in Gestalt Group therapy will flow from our experiences together.
I. Women’s Psychodynamic Process GroupLois Friedlander, LMFT, CGP, Clinical Member AGPA Prvate Practice, San Francisco and Mill Valley
Rose Phelps, LMFT, CGP, Clinical Member AGPA Private Practice, Oakland, California Faculty, The Psychotherapy Institute, Berkeley
This experiential interpersonal, psychodynamic group for women will focus on stages of group development, creation of norms, roles of members, transferences and counter-transferences, effect of leader interventions and styles on group process. Special emphasis on mother-daughter issues, internalized oppression, boundary confusion and fusion.

J. Individual Consultation as an Adjunct to Group Therapy
Art Raisman, PhD, CGP, Clinical Member AGPA Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, UCSF Private Practice, San Francisco and San Rafael, California
Research has shown that individual consultation with the group leader enhances member participation, increases group cohesion, and reduces group drop-outs. This psychodynamic process group will demonstrate the value of adjunctive consultation with the group leader through brief, individual meetings scheduled during the course of this two-day group.
K Redecision Therapy: A Path to Wholeness
Phyllis Jenkins, MA, LMFT, Fellow AGPA Private Practice, San Jose, California
Everyone wants to feel whole: to feel secure with others, content with oneself, and confident in work life. We can help ourselves and our clients achieve this by identifying acquired false beliefs that dampen the spirit and discourage feelings of emotional wellness and, importantly, learn how to change these beliefs for good.
L. Men Struggling with Intimacy
Jamie Moran, LCSW, CGP, Clinical Member AGPA Private Practice, San Francisco and Menlo Park
Men struggle with intimacy in sometimes confounding and complex ways. This institute will encourage men of all sexual orientations to speak to barriers and resistances to intimacy, which may include homophobia, rigid male boundaries/role modeling, discomfort with certain feeling states, power and competition (amongst others). In a supportive and stimulating environment, men will be nurtured, cared for and called on to challenge themselves and others in the group to achieve both understanding of and greater intimacy in their lives. For men only.
