You can forgive horse racing fans for forgetting all about Halloween, for it falls on the same weekend as the Breeders Cup Championships at Keeneland Race Course in Kentucky. Its centerpiece is the October 31 Breeder’s Cup Classic (post time 5:35) which finds Triple Crown winner American Pharoah making his final start before retire-ment. Here’s why else the Classic is shaping up to be one for the books. ¶ It’s a Battle of the Sexes. At press time, 2014 Breeders Cup Distaff winner Beholder was also a proba-ble. This past summer, Beholder proved she could keep up with the boys by trouncing them (last year’s Breeder’s Cup Classic win-ner Bayern included) in the Pacific Classic by the second largest margin in race history. But Beholder has lost both of her two starts outside California. ¶ It’s a Revenge Drama. Frosted played a pivotal role in American Pharoah’s Travers Stakes loss to Keen Ice, also a Classic entrant and the Rodney Dan-gerfield of the class. Frosted’s easy Pennsyl-vania Derby win this fall got him into the winner’s circle for the first time since April and dispelled the notion that he “doesn’t like to win.” ¶ It’s a Family Drama...if Irish turf champion Gleneagles comes to America to make his debut on dirt. Gleneagles is owned by Coolmore, purchasers of American Pharoah’s breeding rights in a deal rumored to range up to $15 million. ¶ American Pharoah will face older horses for the first time— including 2014 Belmont winner To-nalist and 2015 Whitney Handicap winner Honor Code. An early favorite for the 2014 Kentucky Derby before being sidelined by injury, Honor Code is one of the best older horses in the country. His thrilling late-run-ning style could however work against him. A few of the other races and horses to watch: Breeder’s Cup Turf (3:30 on 31st): a fan-favorite in his home state of Illinois, The Pizza Man took a step up in class to win the Arlington Million this summer. Breeder’s Cup Juvenile (2:50 on 31st) and Juvenile Fillies (12:05): while its impact on the Kentucky Derby is questionable, the Juvenile winner earns points toward and is invariably an early Derby buzz horse. Likewise, the fillies’ race earns earns points toward the Kentucky Oaks. An exciting possible entry among the girls is Rachel’s Valentina. Her mother is superstar Rachel Alexandra whose wins over the boys include the 2009 Preakness. Breeder’s Cup Sprint (4:10 on 31st): Runhappy won his racetrack debut last win-ter in a hilariously erratic performance that netted him fans and his own Twitter account (@RunHappyHorse). After setting one hoof on the Kentucky Derby Trail and finishing 9th in the Lecomte Stakes, RunHappy fell off the radar. He returned this summer with a new trainer and on a three race win streak that included setting a stakes record in the King’s Bishop.

how & where to party ON HALLOWEEN(and the other nights the bars will be having costume partie$)
R.I.P.Christopher Lee (1922-2015)
If the goal is just to party with a bunch of friends, then do whatever you want; but if you hope to have a memorable evening, put a little thought into it. There are three general rules to follow: First, if you got it, flaunt it; and if you don’t, downplay it. Second, make sure you can easily drink and use the rest room without any difficulty. Third, choose a character that allows the most dynamic attributes of your primary (or secondary) personality to come out. Having figured all of that out, the best places to go out and strut your stuff are usually the most crowded places; however, going out a little early to a bar where there are only a few people can make you the center of attention. This gives you power over the mere mortals in their street clothes; and elevates you to superstar or superhero status. And remember, you can’t make a fool out of yourself, because the costume is your cover. I know that many people like to make the rounds, and there are some good arguments for that game plan; however, if you limit yourself to only two places, you stand to have a much better chance at “success.” Here are a series of potentially winning combinations… In White Township (that’s Oakland Avenue area for those that rarely venture out of the uptown zone), The Ironwood Grill (next to Burger King) has happy hours from 5 to 7 p.m. and all day (and night) $1.50 Bud Light (pints) with large restrooms, a big bar, and plenty of room to frolic in. The Strike Zone (behind Wendy’s) has a smaller bar where smoking is permitted and has happy hours from 8 to 10 p.m. on Saturday (Halloween night).
If you haven’t been, both of these are worth checking out—especially in costume. Down on Philadelphia Street, you’ve got five places that have room for several hundred people; they are: Twisted Jimmy’s, Culpepper’s (upstairs), The Coney (Dubliner), Wolfie’s and Boomies. All of these places are pretty good at pounding out the assorted drink specials (see ads); and, they all usually get really crowded on a Saturday night. Wolfie’s is hands down the most festive, while Boomies is probably the wild and craziest. The Coney is a mix weighted toward a nice crop of regulars along with late nighters making the rounds. Similarly, Twisted Jimmy’s has its share of familiar faces and a big space to prance around in drag. Culpepper’s is—well—Culpepper’s. For the wanderers, there’s Brunzie’s, which is probably too tight to navigate with a big costume; as are Al Patti’s, Spaghetti Benders and The Brown. Each of these bars have regular patrons; so if that’s you, play through. Down at the other end of Philly Street there’s the new Josephine’s (Nap’s), Tazé and Bruno’s; and while they all have bars, they are mainly nice places to eat. —Best of luck!
Going out on Halloween in costume is always fun, good for your (alter) ego, and it could be instrumental in meeting someone you might never have been able to get close to otherwise (scarry). The key is reading into other people’s costumes; and conversely, properly donning yourself in check with your desired results.

“You don’t have to spend more than five minutes in a bar on Front Street or in the Kihei Triangle or any of the big Ka‘anapali and Wailea resorts before a visitor scans the bar taps and asks the bartender what ‘local beers’ they have. A decade ago, that usually spurred said bartender to offer a glass or bottle of whichever Kona Brewing Co. label the establishment sold...”—Anthony Pignataro, Maui Time, 3/7/13. Cool packaging and the name Kona Brewing reminded me of having a “local” beer with my dad in a bar on Maui. Yes, we were those tourists. And that beer was probably a Kona. To be truthful, the Islands’ best-selling beer is produced in multiple locations, some of them on the mainland. Kona argues that this keeps the beer fresh and reduces their carbon footprint. Wherever it’s made, I will tell you this: Kona’s Longboard Lager is my new favorite beer. It is light and crisp without being watery and weak. It (wait for it) tastes like beer. It tastes like beer and I like it. So, pfffft! Compliments chicken and lighter foods. | 4.6% ABV | 20 IBU | 140 calories

by Tony C.AMBIANCE! Ambiance, for those who use online dictionaries for everything, is defined as “the character and atmosphere of a place.” And, in my estimation, it is as important—if not more important—as the food and drink. For some that statement may come as a shock, and that’s because there is an ambiance-deficiency at far too many of the establishments that they are used to frequenting. I know I harp on this all the time, but the idea of having to go through all of the rigmarole to go out for dinner and/or drinks, you expect it to be an extraordinary experience; not something you can reproduce in your house or apartment. When I take that plunge to go out, I want everything from the temperature of the room and the comfort of my seat, to the sights, sounds and aroma to meet or surpass my expectations. Afterall, part of the premium I’m paying for is the mood and feel of the place; along with, of course, the quality of the food and the service. When I go to an Italian restaurant, I want a flavor of Italy; and when I go to a roadhouse, I expect it to be something out of that Patrick Swayze movie—you get the picture… Too many times, you go into a place that professes to be something, but it ends up being a mishmash of a dozen other joints, that are also a confused mixture of yet another dozen restaurants, bistros, bars and clubs. It’s as if the management is either afraid of being unique; or they are just clueless as to what their customers want (and expect) when they go out. Now if it was just an issue of a place being a hodgepodge, I could deal with that as long as other criteria were being met: such as my

physical comfort, along with visual, auditory and olfactory stimuli. And, of course, it goes without saying that the food and drinks must be exceptional. But when was the last time you experienced all of that at one of those copy cat chophouses, greasy spoons or barrooms? It’s okay to laugh at this point—I did. :-) Anyway, in an area where you have well over 70 choices to spend your hard-earned cash on sustenance and booze (see our dining guide on page 4), you’d think that the crème de la crème would rise to the top; but unfortunately, I’m afraid that’s not always the case. I can think of at least a dozen or more fairly popular eateries that fail horribly when it comes ambiance, as well as on their quality of food and service. You want me to name names don’t you? For reasons of personal finance, I’ll have to resist and be cryptic here. But, hell, if you’re a person that regularly dines out, you know who I’m talking about. In many instances, we’ve come to tune out the white noise in the background, and befriend a bartender or waitress, and go back again and again out of convenience, friendship, proximity or just habit. All with the hope that every now and then some stranger or group of patrons will come in and transform the place for a brief moment—making the humdrum become electric, and making your day (or night). Clearly management is aware of those times when their place comes alive. But too many of them have cognitive dissonance when it comes to crediting outside sources. Basically, they’re so full of themselves that they actually believe they’re responsible; when it’s external forces that put into motion a chain of events that make them look good for that moment. I find that the same blokes usually credit themselves or other media for bringing them customers, when we all know that it’s 157 who sends them the cool people. —Cheers and bon appetit!
