nother year is closing with this Italianwoodtechissue, another twelve months of frenzy and ac-tivity for machinery, technology, tools and ac-cessories for wood and wood-based materials.

Another year where Italianwoodtech talked about “madein Italy”, Italian companies, their offer and their everstronger export focus.

It's no secret that the domestic market is offering poorsatisfaction. It’s no secret that, today more than ever, small and big Italian companies are looking beyond thenational borders, ready to offer effective solutions, high-quality technology that can guarantee consistency andeffectively meet the requirements of big manufacturersas well as customers looking for standalone equipment.

It’s a tough job that Acimall – the Italian manufacturers’association that publishes Italianwoodtech – supportsthrough collective stands at exhibitions, promotion ac-tivities, lobbying and much more.

Twelve months of intensive work that our magazine re-flects and possibly magnifies. In this issue, as usual, there is much about “made in Italy”, because this is our

strongest vocation. But we also talk about key topics –“green economy” above all – where Italian companieshave a lot to say.Our reports about the open house events of the Italy'sthree biggest players – Biesse on page 25; Cefla onpage 28 and Scm on 32 – are tangible evidence that theworld is looking at Italian technology with great attention:many international operators have come to Pesaro,Imola, Thiene...

Before we leave you to this issue of Italianwoodtech, wehave to say goodbye to someone. This is the last issuewith Paolo Zanibon as publisher. He signed the firstissue of Xylon, the Italian counterpart of Italianwoodtech,in November 1987… just a few years ago. I don’t knowwhat he would like to read here: I don't think he caresabout these things and he did not want to write anythingof his own. So, I will simply say thank you for letting uswork independently, while being always ready to giveadvice and open to discussion with us.The rest is written in the pages that he contributed tooffer to this small world of wood.

EVENTSIschp 2013 conference: “Transforming” wood

After the editions held in Canada(2007), France (2009), and UnitedStates (2011), Italy hosted in Florencethe 4th International Scientific Con-ference on hardwood processing.More than 60 researchers and expertscoming from all around the world tookpart in the event. The three-days con-ference offered them the opportunity todiscuss the latest studies and to ex-change ideas in the hardwood pro-cessing sector.Five interesting keynote speecheshave introduced the conference topics.Kennenth MacDicken, Fao SeniorForestry Officer, provided informationabout the Fao approach to the as-sessment and management of hard-wood forest resources worldwide; Fed-erico Giudicenadrea, Chief ExecutiveOfficer of Microtec, outlined innovationsin quality and value optimization of logs.Interesting as well were the keynotespeech on engineered wood structureswith tropical hardwoods provided byJan Willem van de Kuilen, Professor atHolzforschung Technische Universität

München, and the keynote speechby Ed Pepke, Senior Timber Trade An-alyst at Efi, about the global impact ofthe European union timber regulationon the hardwood markets.Federico Ratti, technical director of thegroup, spoke at the Conference to pres-ent the contribution of Scm Grouptechnological innovation in the field ofsecondary wood processing. The speech entitled “Innovation inhardwood processing technology − in-dustrial production towards flexibilityand digital crafting" explained to an au-dience of scientists and researchersfrom all over the world developmentguidelines that are shaping the marketand technologies: continuous qualityimprovement request on the finishedproduct, increasing interaction be-tween the productive and design-ers/architects, production technolo-gies push towards production at oneand with a lot more user friendly ap-proach...these key concepts explainedby the intervention of technical direc-tor Scm Group. ■

FORESTSResumed Inc-Forests4

Although a final agreement could notbe reached in Geneva during the Re-sumed Fourth Session of the Inter-governmental Negotiating Committeeon Forests in Europe (Resumed Inc-Forests4), Forest Europe remains hope-ful of a Legally binding agreement (Lba)on this matter in the pan-European re-gion. The current draft version of a conven-tion on European forests is the result oftwo years of intense negotiations,. Atthis conference, ministers responsiblefor forests decided to establish an In-tergovernmental negotiating committee(Inc) with the mandate to develop a

legally binding agreement on forests inEurope. At this last session of the Inc, agree-ment was reached on all points relat-ed to sustainable forest management. However, there are still significant dif-ferences of opinion on institutionalarrangements. The text will be pre-sented to an Extraordinary ministerialconference, which will take place inMadrid in the first half of 2014. ■

MARKETSLowest wood costs in Latin America

Pulp mills and sawmills in Latin America had among thelowest wood costs in the world in the 2Q/13, reports the“Wood Resource Quarterly” (www.woodprices.com).Declining costs for sawlogs and pulplogs in Brazil andChile over the past few years have made the forest in-dustry in the two countries quite competitive. The two countries currently have some of the lowest woodraw-material costs in the world, and since these costsaccount for 55-65 percent of the production costswhen manufacturing pulp and lumber, it makes the in-dustry quite competitive in the export market. ■

The Board of Directors of Acimall, the Italian wood-working machinery and tools manufacturers’ asso-ciation, unanimously accepted the request byBiesse spa to re-join the association. This is a significant event for the world of woodworkingtechnology, where Biesse is definitely one of the mostrenowned organizations worldwide; it’s a strongsignal that shows everybody’s determination towork together to face the challenges of currentchanges.

“We are all very happy about Biesse spa’s decision”,commented the president of Acimall AmbrogioDelachi, who followed this process in first person. “Iam sure that this comeback will ensure a remarkablecontribution to the association's life and to the pro-motion of Italian machines on the global markets".

“Our comeback in Acimall – said Giancarlo Selci,Managing Director of Biesse spa – stems from therenovation process undertaken by Acimall, a processwe want to support actively. For this reason, we arealso positively considering possible participation inthe next Xylexpo 2014, an event that will have to bringa real return on investment to its major actors”. ■

The absolute value of theindex is equal to 58 (base 2005=100).The overall result was due to the slow-down in foreign demand. The index of for-eign orders collected by Italian manu-facturers fell, in fact, by 6.8 percent, com-pared to the period July-September2012, with an absolute index value of93.9. Happy island in the middle of a "sea oftextile" still very agitated. So the Germanand Italian managers of Messe Frankfurthave defined the current situation ofHeimtextil, which is still the most im-portant event in the world for the fabricand wallpaper of furniture. 2,616 ex-hibitors, 135 Italians, 66 thousand visi-tors (compared to 120 thousand tenyears ago ...), of which three thousandItalians. The date is from 8 to 11 Janu-ary 2014. The "mother trend” of Frank-furt is the "conceptual living". It says notso much the single room with single dé-cor but a cross situation, even for shortperiods, plug and play, an emotional dé-cor, simple and flexible, "open" even tohome sharing. ■

deputy general manager at Acimall, at the first pressconferences – during Holz in Baasel and Sicam inPordenone – introducing Xylexpo 2014, the bien-nial international exhibition of woodworking tech-nology and furniture industry supplies to be heldfrom Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 May next year,at the Milan exhibition center Fieramilano-Rho.The meetings illustrated the roadmap leading to theevent of next May to the industry press, starting froma set of economic remarks. “The industry is certainlynot having its best season”, Corbetta said. “Thewood and woodworking technology business can-not be safe from the general economic trends weall know. In 2012, business was basically stable ona global scale, though with big differences betweeneach market. Despite some definitely “worrying” sit-uations – I am referring to Italy and Spain – thereis more liveliness in other world regions. First of allthe United States, a destination market where, de-spite the latest news, our industry has recorded sig-nificant growth signals".

“Unfortunately, the early months of this year – Cor-betta added – do not support more optimism: ac-cording to our analysis of available figures, thereis a clearly negative trend. German export in theJanuary-June period decreased by a bit less than15 percent compared to the same period of 2012;while Italy lost 8 percent approximately. Such sig-nals should not generate alarm, however they sug-gest to closely monitor the situation".

Just like two years ago, the “German May” did notbring clear signs of a trend reversal, especially fortechnology, so once again we are facing a seasonwith alternate periods of greater optimism and en-tire weeks with very few incoming orders. Again, wehope that the “Italian May” will be the context whenwe finally see a long awaited change of direction.

Activities for next Xylexpo fit into this context, where-by the upcoming edition – like past ones– will use"pragmatism" as its strongest keyword.Just a quick look at 2012 figures, when Milan wel-comed 515 exhibitors (175 from abroad) on an ex-hibition area of 31 thousand square meter net; and43 thousand visitors, 47 percent from abroad.

WORKING FOR XYLEXPO 2014!

16 XYLON INTERNATIONAL November-December 2013

“It’s not easy to carry on a strong exhibition proj-ect capable of attracting exhibitors and visitors. Es-pecially in an economic period like the one that hascharacterized also our industry in recent years. Butwe are working even harder to make the next Xyl-expo a concrete event, a reliable mirror of the mar-ket where all actors − from big industrial groups tosmall and medium businesses − can express theirskills and potential, offering a uniquely exhaustivereview to visitors".

This is the message launched by Dario Corbetta,

Booth allocation is starting soon: halls 1-3 will bededicated to panel technology, the traditional“core” of Xylexpo. Solid wood processing will bestaged in hall 2, while hall 4 will display everythingthat fits into the definition of “first operation”. Onthe whole, a 40 thousand square meter area, withone third covered by international exhibitors.

“For several months now – said Dario Corbetta, marketing manager of Xylexpo – we have beenworking to spread the message that our exhibitionwill be the ideal place to meet the widest offer, tocompare solutions and to understand what the glob-al technology industry can provide. A strong message we are delivering to new andconsolidated exhibitors first, but that we will startto spread also among visitors in a couple ofweeks; visitors have always been a valuable re-source for our exhibition, boasting very high ratesof international attendance, around 50 percent”.

A major step is the launch of the new websitewww.xylepxo.com, with enhanced functionality tohelp visitors and exhibitors find all useful informa-tion even more easily. Strong online presence is alsosupported by dedicated Facebook, Twitter andYouTube channels.

The show – the only one supported by the ItalianMinistry of Economic Development and Eum-abois, the European federation gathering thirteennational industry associations – will invite delega-tions of importers and operators from all over theworld, with massive promotion supported by a part-nership with the Ministry and Ice, the Italian foreigntrade agency.

Xylexpo has already been introduced at several in-ternational events in 2013, including Fimma Brasilin Bento Goncalves, Ligna in Hanover, Fitecma inBuenos Aires, Awfs in Las Vegas, Fmc in Shang-hai, Lisderevmash in Kiev, Woodworking in Min-sk, Vietnamwood in Ho Chi Minh City and WoodProcessing Machinery in Istanbul, Holz in Baseland Sicam in Pordenone. In the last months of the year, the roadshow will con-tinue with Wms in Toronto (24-26 October) and Wood-ex in Moscow (26-29 November), then in 2014 withExpopromueble in Mexico City (22-25 January) andIndiawood (21-25 February) in Bangalore. ■

Long-awaited news thatfeeds expectations for Xyl-expo 2014 as the first editionof a new and more positiveseason. This is the moodafter Biesse Group an-nounced their decision tocome back to the biennial in-ternational exhibition of woodtechnology and furniture in-dustry supplies. The nextXylexpo, scheduled from 13to 17 May 2014, will have thePesaro-based multinationalcompany among its ex-hibitors, following a deci-sion made few days aftertheir return into Acimall, theassociation of Italian woodtechnology manufacturers.

“The current renovation of ourassociation – said DarioCorbetta, Acimall deputymanager, in charge for allXylexpo activities – has sure-ly created the conditions forthis new agreement. We wel-come the decision of thegroup’s owners and man-agement with great satis-faction, but also with a senseof responsibility and aware-ness, and a spur to do evenmore and better for the suc-cess of the exhibition”.

A long-expected decision,we repeat, for an industrythat has been put to a toughtest by a long period of hugeeconomic difficulties; andnow, there are hopes thatother actors might comeback to Xylexpo as well.

“This would be a great signof unity and shared intent for“made in Italy”, undoubted-ly a further contribution to thesuccess of Italian wood-working technology aroundthe world”, said Corbetta, who concluded: “For ourpart, as we have alwaysdone, we will do all we can tomake Xylexpo 2014 not onlythe key industry event ineven-numbered years, butalso a credible showcasefor the Italian industry”.

ACIMALL

The year 2013 might closebetter than expected in thepast few months. Such feel-ing is supported by the third-quarter figures of the wood-working technology indus-try, processed by the StudiesOffice of Acimall, the associ-ation of Italian manufacturers. The trend seems to be slight-ly more positive than thesame period of 2012, with or-ders growing by 3 percent. This time, the strongest driv-er is the domestic market, scoring a significant increaseby 14.4 percent, althoughthis result fits into the trend ofthe past two years, a long pe-riod when domestic orderstouched an all-time low. As toexport, we can repeat whatwe said about the previousquarter: 0.3 percent morethan in the July-September2012 period is a signal ofsubstantial “stability”, an-other positive step towardsthe consolidation of ourstrong export propensity.

WOODWORKING TECHNOLOGY: SLIGHT IMPROVEMENTIN THE THIRD QUARTER 2013

The orders book spans 2.4months, while from the be-ginning of the year priceshave increased by 1.2 per-cent (0.9 percent in the pre-vious quarter). Unfortunate-ly, turnover decreased inthe July-September period:minus 3.8 percent comparedto the same period of 2012.

According to the quality sur-vey, 25 percent of respon-dents indicated a positiveproduction trend, 50 per-cent stable and 25 percentshrinking production vol-umes. Employment is stationaryaccording to 75 percent of

the sample, decreasing for15 percent and on the riseaccording to 10 percent. It isworth noticing that, in theApril-June 2013 period, norespondent had mentionedthe possibility of new em-ployment. Available stocks are sta-ble for 55 per cent of the in-terviewees, while 25 percentindicate a decrease and 20percent an increase.

Short-term trends are sug-gested by the results of theforecast survey: onceagain, moderate optimismcharacterizes remarks aboutexport, combined with a less

pessimistic vision of domes-tic market trends, althoughstill very few expect an im-provement in the short term.Let’s see figures: 30 percentof respondents expect in-creasing orders from abroad,45 percent stability and 25percent reduction (the finalbalance is plus 5, versus 8 inthe previous quarter). The domestic market will suf-fer from shrinkage accordingto 20 percent of the sample, while 75 percent expect sta-bility and 5 percent expansion(the negative balance is mi-nus 15, while in the previousquarter it was minus 27). ■

first three months of 2013. Asian export (from Chi-na and Taiwan) repeated the result of the first se-mester 2012, getting even closer to their major Eu-ropean competitors, while export from the UnitedStates (plus 8.36 percent) and Austria (plus 1.54percent) are basically addressed to neighbormarkets.

SOME REMARKS...What are the results of major exporting countriesin their most important destination markets? We of-fer some considerations about competition in theworld’s major import markets for woodworking ma-chinery. The United States once again reaffirmedtheir role of biggest market worldwide, with a pos-itive trend benefiting all their suppliers, Italy included. As usual, there is a massive flow of equipment man-ufactured in Asia, while European competitors arestill led by Germany in the leading position. In Russia, Germany is the top exporter, with a sol-id leadership supported by the supply of big plantsfor panel production. Also Italy is performing well inthis country, though slightly dropping from 2012. Onlymarginal shares for the other actors of global export.

Competition is particularly tough in China, whereall major manufacturing countries are active. Ger-

THE RESULTS OF THE TOP-SIX EXPORTING COUNTRIESThe first half 2013 was not easy for the woodworkingtechnology and wood-based materials industry. Ac-cording to the data processed by the Studies Of-fice of Acimall– the Confindustria member asso-ciation representing industry companies – theJanuary-June period was tough for export from theOld Continent. Also for Germany, that is still at thetop of the ranking (see table below), but recordeda significant decrease in sales abroad (minus 14.81percent compared to the same period in 2012), con-firming the negative trend in the first quarter of thisyear. It went slightly better for Italy, which still re-mains in negative territory, while recovering somepercent points from the reduction recorded in the

April-June 2012), Serbia (5.3 million, plus 48.9 per-cent) and Paraguay (one million Euros, plus 41 per-cent). Destination markets with a negative sign, meaning a reduction of technology acquisition fromthe leading producing countries, include Brazil (26million Euros in the second half 2013, minus 68 per-cent over the same period of 2012) and India (15.4million, minus 31 percent), countries that – weshould not forget – have been very positive in re-cent times. In Europe, France (56 million Euros in April-June2013, minus 8.7 percent compared to the secondhalf 2012), Belgium (27.5 million, minus 22 per-cent) and Switzerland (26.9 million, minus 7.3 per-cent), all “mature” markets.Thailand and Australia are suffering from dropsclose to 30 percent, combined with discouragingresults of countries like the Czech Republic,Hungary and Greece. ■

many is the top exporter with over 60 million Eurosin the first half 2013, followed by Taiwan (40 million)and Italy (just below 30 million Euros). Germany and Italy take the biggest share ofwoodworking technology export to Brazil, mainlyas a result of effective partnership agreements withlocal resellers and, in some cases, huge direct in-vestments. In Europe, Germany and France are the most im-portant destination markets; it is worth highlightingthe penetration of made-in-China technology in Ger-many, a strongly growing trend.

“VIRTUOUS” COUNTRIESThe global trade analysis by the Acimall studies of-fice also allows to make a ranking of “virtuous coun-tries”, i.e. the markets that, in the second half 2013,have invested more resources in woodworking tech-nology (taking into account supplies from Germany,Italy, China, Austria and the United States; Taiwanfigures are not available), as evidence of a manu-facturing situation that - with all required caution -is positive.Again, the United States are in the top positions, withimport growth rates close to 15 percent comparedto the April-June 2012 period. Interesting trends alsoin Canada (plus 22 percent) and the United King-dom (plus 7.2 percent), whereby the latter has beenconsolidating its structural recovery in the past fewmonths. Growth in North America is also supportedby Mexico (plus 27 percent). Running up far behind, with much lower absolutevalues, Lithuania with 8.6 million Euros in the sec-ond half 2013, up by 134.45 percent compared to

FLOORING

The Chinese flooring marketis huge. In 2011 alone, USmarket research organisa-tion Catalina Research esti-mated that total salesthroughout China amountedto 3.9 billion m2. The high-end segment of this marketoffers growing potential forEuropean-made quality lam-inate flooring, and the Eplf(Association of Europeanproducers of laminate floor-ing) believes that the Chinesemarket is once again offeringgood opportunities for itsmembers. Tiles are still by far the mostpopular option in the Chineseflooring market. According toCatalina Research, tiles rep-resented 75 percent (2.93 bil-lion m2) of all flooring prod-ucts sold in China in 2011,

22 XYLON INTERNATIONAL November-December 2013

EUROPEAN QUALITY AND INNOVATIONfollowed at a distance bycarpets and rugs with 9 per-cent (351 million m2) andelastic floors with 5 percent(195 million m2). Laminateflooring made up just 4 per-cent of the market (156 mil-lion m2), with solid woodand bamboo floors ac-counting for 4 percent (156million m2) and stone floors3 percent (117 million m2).The market share occupiedby wooden flooring has risenin recent years, says Catali-na Research. And as a resultof the anticipated growth inthe urban population be-tween now and 2025, it is es-timated that demand for newfloors will increase by 149 to177 million m2 per year. European manufacturershave the potential to regain alot of ground in China. Theopportunities are certainlythere. Several years ago lam-inate flooring began to bemanufactured in China, caus-

ing the import market forEplf members to collapse, butin 2012 a certain amount ofrollback was seen. In 2012,imports of high-quality, spe-cialist brand-name goodsmanufactured by Eplf in Chi-na and Hong Kong onceagain exceeded 3 million m²,after having fallen to 2.3 mil-lion m2 in 2011. This is a positive sign, espe-cially in view of the fact thatin 2012 China produced 28percent of the world's lami-nate flooring, moving into thetop spot for the first time(with Germany accountingfor 27 percent). Some Eplf members, such asPergo, Skema and Unilin, are already active on theChinese market, and theycould soon be joined by oth-er names. Italian manufacturer Skemahas found that interior de-signers for commercial prem-ises and affluent privateclients often play a key role asdecision-makers.

The excellent reputation en-joyed by European productson the Chinese market isnot only due to elegance indesign. The quality of Euro-pean laminate flooring is alsomeasured by whether theproducts were actually man-ufactured in the home coun-try of the brand name.Euro-pean-made products arehighly sought after in China, and this means importantopportunities for the Euro-pean laminate flooring in-dustry with its enormous po-

tential for innovation. Eplf isconvinced that Europeanmanufacturers, with their pro-duction expertise, are wellpositioned to maintain thelead over Chinese competi-tors. The Chinese flooring markethas specific cultural fac-tors that make it differentfrom other regions. In a coun-try with a tradition of cheapitinerant labour, few middle-class customers would thinkof laying their own flooring.Laminate floors are seen asa building material ratherthan a home decoratingproduct. Chinese manufac-turers normally sell their prod-ucts through their own storesand also offer an installationservice. These points of saleare either stores that spe-cialise in flooring or brandshowrooms in multi-storeymalls or shopping centres of-fering a wide range of build-ing products.

E-commerce is also set toplay a bigger role in Chi-nese consumer behaviour.Online shopping services arealready seeing significantyear-on-year growth. The crisis of the constructionindustry and the drop of con-sumption continue to influ-ence also the parquet in-dustry, with levels of diffi-culties that are different fromcountry to country, both in theEuropean Union and in thewider Euro area. This is whatthe Board of Directors ofFep (the European Federa-tion of the Parquet Industry)talked about last Septem-ber, detecting “spotted” mar-ket trends. trend, the situations at na-tional levels are deeply dif-ferentiated.Positive trend was recordedin the Netherlands, whereduring the first quarter 2013the parquet market reachedthe same levels as in 2012;the dynamic home renovationbusiness still seems not to in-volve the replacement of oldparquets, yet, opting for theirrequalification. Slight improvement wasrecorded in Norway (plus 2percent), despite the drop inthe number of new finished

houses. In Switzerland, af-ter a first quarter which wasrelatively stable, according tosome estimates parquetsales grew by 2-3 percent inthe first quarter of 2013,compared to the same datesof the previous year, althoughthe market is increasinglyinvaded by products ofdoubtful quality that inter-fere with the image of realwood parquet. In Germany, parquet sales inthe first quarter 2013 did notshow any variation, but theconstruction industry moved

ahead and recorded an in-crease of construction per-mits.A slight decrease in parquetsales was recorded in do-mestic markets of Denmark(minus 4 percent over the firstsemester of 2012), Finland(minus 3 percent), Sweden(minus 3 percent) and Bel-gium (different Fep sourcesindicate a decrease by morethan 5 percent on annualbasis for the first six monthsof 2013, compared to thesame period of last year).Minus 2 percent was record-ed in Austria as well, wherethe parquet market was pe-nalized also by very badweather conditions that af-fected this country in thefirst six months of 2013.Critical situation in France:the first half of 2013 showeda 10 percent decrease inparquet sales on annual ba-sis, in line with the situationof the first quarter of the cur-rent year; the result of aweakened trust of consumersand the lack of political actionto solve the problem. In Italystrong taxation has a nega-tive impact on consumersand market, which lost 11percent in the first half of2013 compared to the sameperiod of the previous year, according to estimates. Thewood industry in general isexperiencing a difficult stagewith 25 percent loss in termsof sales, while imported prod-ucts benefit from a favor-able euro/US dollar ex-change rate. In Spain aswell, sales dropped furtherby 10 percent in the firsthalf of 2013 compared to thesame period of last year. ■

we are expecting about one thousand visitors”. Theresults, as already said, went beyond expectationsand we are convinced that people in Biesse are re-ally happy...

Going back to results, the general manager ofBiesse focused on the drive generated by the in-novations proposed to the market and exhibited alsoat BiesseInside 2013. “These solutions – let me say– have changed the state of the art in some indus-tries and in some product market segments. I’m think-ing about “bSolid”, a software solution that I do nothesitate to consider at least five years ahead, com-pared to the offer of our competitors. A product thatis positively influencing the demand of our workingcenters, not only in the wood industry: the comebackof interest that we are recording for this software isfar beyond our greatest expectations”.“bSolid” was certainly one of the products under thespotlight during the open house. Our readers hadthe opportunity to discover it also through the in-terview – published in the issue of September-Oc-tober of Italianwoodtech – with Mcm, a Cantu-basedcustomer of Biesse that presented its case duringthe open-house, its relationship with this software so-

BIESSEINSIDE: PLUS 35 PERCENT2,200 visitors at the Biesse open house, organized in the Tech Center of the Pesaro-based group from September 17 to 19. Several proposals, as usual, and an opportunity to talk with the general manager, Stefano Porcellini.

A wonderful open house, nothing to say. A lot of peo-ple, so many people that we wondered what washappening. Yes, because at Biesse events there arealways many people, but this time… indeed, the fig-ures at the end of the event are clear: 2,200 op-erators attending, which – considering the num-ber of companies – represents an increase by 35percent of companies interested in the technolo-gy solutions of the Pesaro giant compared to theprevious edition.Good reason for satisfaction, and, more important,a touch of optimism for the next season of our in-dustry, although the results of the Biesse Group seemto be better than those of many other companies.

STEFANO PORCELLINIThis was confirmed also by Stefano Porcellini, gen-eral manager of the group, as he welcomed the in-dustry press. “We are getting through a kind of re-birth”, he said. “We are satisfied with the current sit-uation, the economic season is proving us right inthe choices we made to face this period in the bestway. We are convinced that the worst period is over,we perceive it clearly and we look at the future witha definitely positive attitude. This year we have reached important goals. We haveimproved from the past and figures show that we areconsolidating our position, even if we cannot say weare back to the best of our times… but we are back

to make profits, to grow, and we are very satis-fied”.

However, Porcellini waswrong about one thing:“We are excited forthese days of BiesseInside – he told us dur-ing the meeting held onOctober 18 – because

We have touchedwith our hands thepieces edge-band-ed with this technol-ogy, developed byBiesse, mounted ona "Stream”. And toshow that it was not only about aesthetics, but alsophysical-mechanical and tightness features, therewas also a sample piece edgebanded during theopen house, completely submerged in water, thatdid not feature any problem.

RAPHAËL PRATIBefore leaving, Stefano Procellini presented the newmarketing and communication director of theGroup, Raphaël Prati. “An “old acquaintance”, ar-rived after long experience in another big group ofthe industry, today at his “baptism” with us. He willnot only deal with machines for wood and wood-based products, but he will be also involved in ouractivities in the glass, marble, composite andmechatronic industries at global level. We will makean important step ahead with him, focusing the rightlevel of attention not only on the definition of ourtechnical solutions, but also on the marketing field”.

AROUND THE TECH CENTER…The three thousand square meters of the Tech Cen-ter have been organized for specific technical ar-eas: nesting, software, bSolid, drilling, sanding, cut-ting, edgebanding, production cells for doors andwindows and five axis machining centers. As to doors and windows, we saw an integratedcell whose core was the “UniLine” multicenter, equipped with an automatic loading and unload-ing system that allows the line to produce standardand special doors and windows with endless

lution and its impact on the production methods ofthe company. Mirco Molteni, the owner of Mcm, con-firmed what he had already told us during our visitat his company: “… it’s intuitive, parametric, morepowerful and versatile especially for surfaces… With“bSolid” you simply define geometry with few clicks, follow instructions, and the screen displays the work-piece ready for production, while the software de-velops all operations to manufacture it. What elseshould I add?”. Nothing, Mr Molteni….The experts of the new software solution met withvisitors and customers to show them the benefitsoffered by “bSolid”, a simple and intuitive solution, easy to use, allowing the user to simulate the ma-chine accurately, ensuring simplified process man-agement, higher performance and reduced ma-chining times.

“AIR FORCE SYSTEM” “Air force System” is another product to which Ste-fano Porcellini drew the attention of journalists at-tending the event, an edgebanding system “…en-suring results that can be compared, and are evenbetter than those that can be reached with laseredgebanding ”, he said without concealing his en-thusiasm. “I do not hesitate to say that we have ba-sically overcome laser technology with a simpleprocess, which requires reduced investments anda limited maintenance. With “Air Force System” wehave deserved the “Visionary Award” during thelast edition of Awfs in Las Vegas, but I admit thatthe biggest award is to see orders coming in andgrowing demand for this solution”.

working cycle in un-attended mode, us-ing only 20 percentof the operator’s timeso that he can focuson the assembly orother operationswhile the machine is working. “For the Nc processing for doors and windows –said Luca Tenti, in charge of Biesse technologiesfor this industry – we are without any doubt thosewho have revolutionized the production method, of-fering strongly innovative solutions both for smallcompanies and for those looking for more impor-tant volumes”.

As to calibrating and sanding processing, “Opera5” was previewed, a new and extremely flexible Vietfinishing center allowing the user to calibrate andsand solid wood elements or pre-sand and super-finish veneered and painted panels. The edition of BiesseInside 2013 strongly focusedon nesting, a kind of machining method that iswidespread in Anglo-Saxon countries and that isalso spreading in Europe very quickly, for it ensuresgreat flexibility and a “production reactivity” allowingthe user to pass from batch production to “justin time” production. Nesting enables the modifi-cation, reprogramming of production systems, re-ducing costs and working in such a way to face aconstantly changing demand more effectively. We liked to see a “Rover A FT” in action, a machineprovided with a feeding system allowing to meas-ure a panel, load it in the right position and send itto the production area. We saw the working centerrun in nesting mode on three overlapped panels, aprocedure that ensures a production from ten totwelve cabinets or kitchen sets in unattendedmode. A working center that can be obviously in-tegrated with drilling and edging machines, so asto have a finished piece, without limits of dimensions. Watch the video on XylonTube.

BIESSE FOR IKEA“BiesseInside is a strategic meeting involving vis-itors from all over the world”, said Cesare Tinti, di-rector of Wood Division, presenting the latest “ef-fort” on which Biesse is working for Ikea. “We wantto offer a preview of the new production line de-veloped for Ikea Industry dedicated to the pro-duction of great volumes of shaped worktops that, after the development of specific solutions for hol-low-core processing, confirms and strengthens thepartnership with this important customer”. Four ma-chining centers operating together, creating areal batch-one production line with 30 meters ofhigh technology but also flexibility, versatility andproductivity. But we won’t tell you more, becausewe agreed with Biesse managers to have the op-portunity to see this solution and describe it in amore detailed way in one of the next issues of Ital-ianwoodtech.

WINSTORELast but not least, “Winstore”, the automatic handling-storage system – please forgive us for the banalityof the definition – that we have already had the pleas-ure to describe in our features. At BiesseInside 2013we saw how this technology can be particularly suit-able for the nesting world, but it can also be combinedwith cutting lines to create real high-automation work-ing cells, particularly recom-mended for medium and highproduction volumes. The combination with a “Wnt”cutting machine equippedwith a “Twin Pusher 2.1”showed us the real benefitsof this automatic warehouseand the efficiency and pro-ductivity increase that it en-sures. Reduced footprint, one single operator andresults that are so impressive that convince manypeople to buy it. Biesse is producing four modelsa month, mainly for Russia and Brazil, where the de-mand for high performance solutions in volumes isstill high. A system that, as we have already said, can be integrated with edging or drilling process-es and the automated factory is ready!

als, with short deadlines and lower costs. It is alsoa more “ecological” project…It sounds too good to be true, and instead, from whatwe have seen and heard, it is.

FOURTH “CEFLA LIVE”Now that we have previewed what was under thespotlights, let’s take a step back and tell the story. Thefourth “Cefla Live”, the “open day” organized by theFinishing Group of the Imola-based cooperative as-sociation, was a great success. The dazzling “TechLab” at Cefla welcomed 660 visitors from 17 to 19October, more than twice as many as in 2012. Amongthese, 80 percent came from abroad, further evidencenot only that export is our vocation and the greatestopportunity for our companies, but also that, whenit comes to finishing, Cefla leads the ranking all overthe world, wherever there is glass, furniture or com-posite to paint.“In these years, Cefla Live has been growing strong– said Alberto Maestri, Sales Manager Cefla Fin-ishing Group – but our philosophy has neverchanged: offering technologically innovative solutionsto our customers, meeting their requirements andmatching their working methods, while under-standing their real needs and enabling them tochoose “what to do”, but most of all “how to do” toopen new markets. This means reaffirming our vo-cation to continuous innovation, to the design andconstruction of machinery and plants that enable ourcustomers to be more competitive”. Several machines were exhibited and running for allusers to see and touch the possibilities of each prod-uct. There were solutions for swiveling spraying(“Easy”, “Mito” and “Prima”), “iBotic” and “Aquadry”for water-based coating cycles, machines and linesto paint glass, parquet, profiles and windows with“iGiotto”, edge coating with “Smartedge”.

Also at this Cefla Live, much attention was attractedby digital print. This is no latest news from Cefla, but

“FUSION COATING”, A NEW CONCEPTFROM CEFLA GROUP AND HENKELThe latest “Cefla Live” presented the results of collaboration between Cefla Group and the German giant Henkel to create “high gloss” panels.

If we got it right, the goal is clear: “finish” surfacesthat have no excellent quality, paint them with excellentresults. In other words, take a panel of poor parti-cleboard, do some magic on its dramatically unevenedges and poorly sanded and calibrated surfaces, until in the end everything looks like the most beau-tiful surface you have ever seen.A magic that Cefla has already shown with its “Inertcoating” technology, which we reported about sev-eral times in Xylon. Now we have seen another development, namely “fu-sion coating”, a new process that goes a few stepsfurther into this direction, also through the partnershipwith a big actor like the German group Henkel, andspecifically their adhesive division…Shortly stated, with a coat of hot-melt glue and an “in-ert coating” pass, you can achieve excellent finish-ing with an energy-saving process, compared to oth-er methods, and a much smaller quantity of materi-

hesive has such featuresthat it helps minimize cracksdue to natural particleboard size variations, besidesallowing to cut panels at the end of the whole process".

ANDREAS KANZAndreas Kanz, Business development manager Ad-hesive Technologies for wood and constructions, added a sentence that we found really fitting: “Themarket keeps asking for new solutions, more beau-tiful products with better quality and lower costs. Wemake adhesives, we are a big group with intensiveresearch. We have to give tangible answers".Going into technical details, Kanz explained that theUv-curing hotmelt glue “Technomelt Chs 370”, ap-plied directly onto laminated panels, acts as primerfor one or more lacquer coats, delivering a final “highgloss” effect as a result of its excellent adhesion tomelamine, flexibility andcompatibility with Uv paints.“Together with Cefla – Kanzadded – we have devel-oped a process that goesbeyond conventional tech-nology to make “high gloss”panels: the application oflaminate with high-gloss filmon wood-based panels isvery expensive, not to men-tion the problems related tothe application of paints andenamels on laminated pan-els, as current primers offer low adhesion to melamineand are not as flexible and Uv-curing hotmelt ad-hesives".“Technomelt Chs 370 Uv” contains no volatile organiccompounds and is roller-spread at operating tem-peratures between 90 and 100 °C, offering an “in-teresting” process also in terms of energy usage.Costs are reduced further as the Uv glues “dries” im-mediately and the workpiece can be moved on di-rectly to the next stage.

ANDREA LUCA GUIDUZZI“We have developed new technology that, we aresure, will be interesting for a huge number of com-panies in our industry”, added Andrea LucaGuiduzzi. “After all, good ideas very often resultfrom discussion and collaboration: the exchangeof opinions and experience between Cefla andHenkel has resulted into a new development of “in-

it is still recent and an increasing number of users islooking at this solution with growing interest, as it de-livers results that are really noticeable. Many visitors– including us – stopped to see what digital print canachieve, what you can do and the great decoratingflexibility offered by "Pixart Plot", which can print allkinds of decorations or pictures onto flat or moldedcabinet doors, without any problem. The only limit isimagination: if you want to have a new kitchen withyour wedding pictures on the cabinet doors, or youprefer a wardrobe with a two-meter-tall MickeyMouse, or you opt for less fanciful and more "indus-trial" patterns, the result is always perfect. It's extremecustomization combined with n-squared originality.

Undoubtedly, “Cefla Live”, as written in the press re-lease of the Imola group “… has become a majorevent for the entire finishing supply chain, where thekey stakeholders, including Italian and internation-al paint producers, glue producers, suppliers of spray-ing equipment, abrasive paper, grinding wheels, con-veyors and quality control, offer hands-on demos andall-round consulting to Cefla customers, ensuring atangible benefit to all visitors”.

FUSION COATINGLet’s go back to the real news of this open house, namely “Fusion coating”. Presented in partnership withHenkel, this process combines two innovative sys-tems: “Uv hotmelt coating” by Henkel and “InertCoating” by Sorbini which deliver perfect adhesionand flatness on painted and decorated melamine-faced panels, both for glossy and for matte finishing. Such technology can be applied to mdf panels aswell as rougher particleboard, for panels still to be sentto the cutting saw or already cut and edgebandedparts. This means that users can do as they wish, place the line wherever they want, and fit “fusion coat-ing” into their workflow with maximum flexibility. There was much talking with Cefla and Henkel en-gineers at “Cefla Live”, and potential users showedgreat interest during seminars and tests carried outin the "fusion coating” plant installed at the openhouse, now available to anyone for real tests on theirproduction.

How does it work? Andrea Luca Guiduzzi explained:“Very briefly, we can say that the Uv hotmelt glue byHenkel creates a flexible coating on the panel withone single application, thus reducing the number ofcoats compared to conventional processes. This ad-

“The result is stable, simple and fast to achieve, withthe warranty of excellent final quality and trouble-freegripping”, Guiduzzi states. “The line is shorter, about thirty meters versus 80 or 100 with other so-lutions, it requires less space and less energy, as wehave developed a high-performance Uv oven that cando the same work as two conventional ovens.I add that all our tests have never shown yellowingproblems, and we can work on edgebanded panelsand with any kind of melamine”.

Summing up, as they explained in Imola, we are talk-ing about 40 percent material saving, faster dryingcycle, greater stability of the coating film, consis-tent thickness of the finished panel, which means“zero problem” sanding. Guiduzzi was very clearabout costs: a traditional process requires 270grams of material with an average cost of 1.9 Eu-ros per square meter. “Fusion coating” requires 20grams of Technomelt, 60 of “inert coating”, 45 of“top coat”, which means 1.2 Euros per square me-ter, with 50 percent productivity increase. What elsecould we add?

Ap-plication flexibility and excellent results can beachieved with limited investments and really simpletechnology”.

It all starts with a melamine-faced panel onto whichthe Henkel glues is spread using a roller. Intermedi-ate sanding, if necessary, and an “inert coating” passare performed before final application. That’s it, cleanand easy, also thanks to Uv.

Today technology makes the difference, andalso thanks to Scm Group machines, we were ableto carry on also in hard times, leveraging com-petitive pricing, good productivity and – most of all– good finishing, which the final customer perceivesimmediately! In this respect, “Planetario” is a won-derful solution, because it enables us to do all wewant with the best result. Having maximum flexibilityand top quality is not for everyone… I rememberthe day when we installed it, we were executing amajor order and we have to calibrate huge arch-es, up to five meters, in few hours. Well, we had noproblems and it was our first job with that machine”...

Mr Zacchello, furniture first, and now doors and win-dows…“We have never stopped making furniture, actually, and we still offer it to our customers, but we are nowdoor and window specialists. We have taken this new direction to follow customerrequirements in terms of product quality, finishingand long-term service. Some of our customers havebeen with us for over twenty years. Technology is currently selected also by my sonDaniele, who will guide our business in the com-ing years, with 14 employees and 1.2 million Euroturnover approximately, whereby the Veneto regionis our core market. To respond to market demand,we have purchased machines that can makespecial or curved elements; the role of Scm Groupin terms of support and consulting was essential,it helped us grow. Our latest acquisition was the “Planetario” cali-brating machine by Dmc, which immediatelymade a difference for sanding, rusticating, andworkpiece finishing, enhancing the touch-and-feelof wood and eliminating manual cleaning and fin-ishing operations”.

Are you satisfied with this partnership?“If you take a look around, it is obvious that we arehappy with our partnership with the Rimini group:virtually all of our machines, all our lines are Scm-branded... We have selected their solutions for theirfunctional value and also for our personal rela-tionship. Take this example: several years ago, afire destroyed the factory. We have invested, learned and requested assis-tance from our suppliers to be up to date with in-novation in hardware, glazing and all elements ofa next-generation window. We have acquired specific types of tools to makecertain profiles and high-performance windows, as

Mrs.Vania, many companies have closed down inLombardy, how is it going in Veneto?“Things are difficult also in this area. Unfortunate-ly, many have closed down and large companiesare suffering most, as they need big orders that con-structions no longer offer in these times. We are a small organization working for differenttypes of customers, from private individuals to com-

“Technology Days Edgebanding &more”, held at Scm Group's Stefani plantfrom 17th to 19th October, hit just theright note. An event in Thiene (Vicenza)with a definite “business” leaning, at-tended by over 300 important cus-tomers from 23 countries throughoutthe world but all interested in the lat-est edgebanding solutions, from themost simple and flexible machine to thereally top performance line, and the Mor-bidelli machining centre with its effec-tive edgebanding head. A good sixteendifferent, fully operating solutions demon-strated the Group's ability to meet theneeds of every operator and satisfyevery type of job order. Sixteen solutionsfocusing on the real needs of a marketconstantly searching for improved flex-ibility, automation and cost reduction, where the absolute quality of the edge-banding is a fundamental pre-requisite.

“SOLUTION HD B”The centre stage was taken up by thenew “Solution HD B”, the electronic sin-gle-sided edgebanding machine that'struly universal (it can attach melamine-coated edges or edges in Abs, Pvc,Pmma and other materials in every pos-sible finish, as well as pre-cut veneerstrips and wooden strips) and highlyproductive, with feed speeds of up to30 meters per minute.A solution designed to offer the best per-formance with the minimum invest-ment, guaranteeing reliability and thepossibility to easily program any ma-chining operation, thanks to an ultra-modern 3D interface with the user. Plusfactors that make the new Stefani edge-banding machine powerful, safe, ef-fective and extremely user-friendly, evenfor less experienced operators. And it'salso economically advantageous!

Amongst the many technological fea-tures, the 2-motor panel rounding toolthat produces a high-quality finish, and the belt presser that ensures ac-curate, vibration-free piece trans-portation. All five configurations (arange that will satisfy any process re-quirement) are equipped with the"Sav€nergy system" that ensures ener-gy savings of up to 9 percent and atleast 20 kilometers of edgebandingsaved per year, with a suction systemthat draws in over 98 percent of chips.

LASER EDGEBANDING FOR HIGH VOLUMESThe event in Thiene confirmed ScmGroup's vocation as a reference part-ner for large systems too. This was demonstrated by an extremely“powerful” edgebanding line: withinroughly 40 metres, there are two two-

Those who remained up-to-date and offered qual-ity to customers have survived...“Exactly, also because today windows are consid-ered an integral part of interior decorations, just likefurniture. But at the same time, it is a component ofthe building envelope and it plays a role in ensur-ing the comfort level. Users also pay much more at-tention to finishing. They want to “touch” wood, feelits structure. That’s another reason why we have in-vested in “Planetario”, which allows to offer a hap-tic experience to each customer”. (l.r.) ■

an essential step towards certification and com-pliance with KlimaHouse standards. We went toBozen, we analyzed these certification parameters,we called specializing engineers to our companyand we are still cooperating with a German expertwho is constantly supporting us for energy-savingaspects, technology performance of windowsand interaction between performance and mate-rials, from wood to glass. Another element we are keen on is the quality ofraw materials: we exclusively use glulam wood, from oak to mahogany, from ash to spruce or fir, ac-cording to the product type and price range”.

sided Stefani “Evolution SBB laser-line” edgebanding machines that guar-antee absolute quality and optimum pro-ductivity, around five thousand panelsper shift. Structured to work easily 24 hours a day,the line is equipped with four laser sys-tems that the customer chose for beingthe most powerful of all the Stefani so-lutions. The aim, in fact, was to guar-antee the speed needed for the pro-duction cycles envisaged, but withoutcompromising the quality in any way. Asolution with no half-measures, and asystem that is undoubtedly an exampleof world-class excellence.

NEW DESIGN FOR CABINET DOORSAND DRAWERSProductivity, quality, cost reduction, but also attention to the design of theend products. The demand for furniture is based on ablend of elements that technologymanages to unite without problems. Like

the possibility to use effective edge-banding when you want to avoidadding extra technical componentsto the design. More and more often, designers prefersurfaces without a continuous profile, without the addition of opening acces-sories; this means providing cabinetdoors and drawers with the necessaryergonomic space for inserting a hand,or lateral profiles for easy use andopening. This new design interpretation is be-coming increasingly popular, and cannowadays be obtained via a less cost-ly method compared, for example, withthe application of rigid aluminium ele-ments on the edges of the door or meth-ods involving profiling and subsequentvarnishing: the panel is merely milled tocreate a “J-shape”, then everything, in-cluding the cavity, is edgebanded us-ing a more up-to-date version of the tra-ditional soft-forming technique. Whether it's a kitchen cupboard door,

a drawer, or a big wardrobe door, theproblem is solved thanks to the Stefanisystem.

“SLIM LINE”Scm Group has introduced the “Slim-Line” system, i.e. the application of glueon the edge rather than on the panel. This means better distribution and an al-most invisible layer of glue.A solution that ensures exceptionalaesthetic qualities with far less invest-ment compared with laser technology,50 percent glue savings, and excellentperformance. In Thiene (Vicenza) Cataspresented the results of the tests car-ried out on the doors edgebandedwith Stefani's “Slim-Line” system: topclass results leading to certification(test Uni 9240:1987 for adhesion andtearing; test Din 68930 for heat/humid-ity climate cycle; test Uni 9242:1987 foredgebanding resistance to heat) withtop marks.

The wood industry is riding the wave of green economy, adopting it as the main approach to production and to processand product innovation. Waiting for recovery and a Green New Deal.

In recent years, green economy has often beenhurriedly and malignantly accused of being a fu-turistic vision, adopted only by strongly determinedcompanies, not to say dreamers. Today, under thecrisis pressure, the scenario clearly speaks againstthis interpretation and suggests that the "green" ap-proach to production, finished product and end-of-life management is increasingly vital, most and fore-most in the wood and furniture industry. Such attitude is shared across the entire supplychain, from forestry to final product disposal, andit is radically modifying visions and production meth-ods, rewarding those who had the courage and ca-pacity to face the challenge earlier. This emerges from the stories, experience, inno-vation and development efforts – in terms of prod-ucts and business organization - undertaken by thecompanies we interviewed for this article, from tech-nology to software, from panel to furniture, up to par-quet. This is also shown by the growing interest forthis subject in the industry and among institutions, with wide-scope strategies that reach beyond taxbonuses.

In Rimini, for the second year in a row, the“Ecomondo” exhibition hosted the “General Statesof Green Economy”, promoted by the NationalCouncil of Green Economy in collaboration with theministries of the Environment and Economic De-velopment. 2,500 participants attended, with 1,400more connected via streaming, 25 Italian and in-ternational speakers, and the ministers Andrea Or-lando (environment) and Flavio Zanonato (economicdevelopment). Among the actions planned in the road map for Italy, the first measure is to “Focus on green economyas a project for the country to face the multiple cri-

GREEN ECONOMY:VIRTUOUS AND INEVITABLE CHOICEsis of economy, environment and employment thatare impacting Italy. Promoting a green New Deal with an innovative pro-gram of reforms to leverage the vocation and qual-ity of Italy, to promote goods and services that im-prove well-being, to support energy saving and ef-ficiency, and the efficient use of resources, and todeploy an extensive plan of environmental reno-vation”. Keywords are eco-innovation, eco-efficiency,non-punishing, possibly rewarding tax conditionsfor environmental-friendly companies, energy sav-ing and renewable energy sources, material re-cycling and recyclability, protection and promotionof ecosystem services, urban requalification, eco-friendly agriculture, sustainable mobility.

Rome was the final destination of the requests byGbc-Green Building Council Italia, a no profit as-sociation of companies, associations and profes-sional communities in the field of sustainable con-structions. Gbc Italia has recently submitted to theItalian parliament a document mentioning thepending deadline of the 2012/27/EU directive forurban and construction renovation (where article4 prescribes that, within April 30, 2014, a multi-yearplan is defined to improve the energy efficiency ofexisting building assets, both public and private, and that at least 3 percent of public buildings un-dergoes significant renovation by the same dead-line), an opportunity not to be missed to acceler-ate the sustainable approach to production and re-qualification of existing construction assets, alsoleveraging Gbc Italia’s availability to contribute tothe definition of a construction and sustainability ac-tion plan at the Environment Commission of the Ital-ian Parliament. This picture leads to a clear remark: “green” pro-duction (with a consistent green attitude not onlyby companies, but also by consumers) is more thaneven not only a virtuous decision, but an in-evitable one. An innovative approach is requiredto support the awaited economic recovery, start-ing from constructions.

HIGH QUALITY FROM RECYCLEDWOODTechnology and per-formance innovationfor panels is tightly re-lated to sustainability. An example is Fan-

toni Group in Osoppo (Udine), a “made in Italy”giant with over 1,200 employees in seven com-panies in Italy and abroad (Fantoni, Novolegno,Lesonit, La-con, Patt, and Spik Iverica). Theircore business is particleboard and mdf for the fur-niture industry and interior decorations. Accordingto Paolo Fantoni, general manager and As-sopannelli/FederlegnoArredo president, the currentscenario is controversial. “The Italian market is show-ing timid signs of improvement, maybe driven bythe recent tax allowances offered by the govern-

ment to support the furniture industry”. Two key is-sues remain, “… the lack of raw material for pan-el producers, as wood is increasingly addressedto energy and pellet production, also in Eastern Eu-rope, combined with lower attention to wood cut-ting, and the difficult situation on some strategic des-tinations for the panel industry, due to social turmoilin Northern Africa, Syria and Egypt. The trend in2014 will also depend on the government’s deci-sion to extend tax bonuses further or not”. Fantoni’s research is characterized by the com-mitment to use 100 percent recycled wood for pan-el production. Examples include the “IS” panel forbio-constructions and the “1R FX” mdf panel for al-ternative applications or combinations with classicalhumid fiber panels, for the production of sitting roomfurniture frames, wall paneling for stores, applica-tions on columns, exhibition booths, walls and ceil-ings. Entirely made from recycled wood with 2.3 or2.5 millimeter thickness, it can be used alone orcombined with multilayer or particleboard panels, and it can be easily bent and shaped by virtue ofits flexibility. “The switch from virgin raw material to recycledwood has led to a change and upgrade of ma-chinery, structures, log yards and so on, but mostof all a new approach to the sustainable control ofemissions”. Does a green product pay? “We are notyet fully leveraging communication opportunities of-fered by a product entirely made from recycled ma-terials. The paper industry has been doing that foryears, and it seems the message has been re-ceived, while furniture has no such appeal yet. It’sa matter of general industry evolution. We mustwork to spread this approach more and more, thencompanies and consumers will have to understandthe value of purchasing specific products”.

DON’T BURN WOOD, RECYCLE ITSince 1962, in Caorso (Piacenza), Saib has beenmanufacturing raw particleboard and laminatedpanels for the furniture industry. The reuse of waste

from woodworking op-erations to exploit sec-ondary raw materials isthe distinctive featureof this company. What’s the current sce-nario? “The domesticmarket is certainlychanging rapidly”,

says Giuseppe Conti, owner and chief financial of-ficer. “The rules of the game have changed com-pletely. Only those who proved to be flexible sur-vived the recent tsunami; the winners are those whocan renovate products and production processes. You have to produce well and fast, this crisis hasfurther shrunk decision lead time and you must de-cide very quickly". For over twenty years Saib has used only reclaimedwood in production. The dispute against the ex-ploitation of wood biomass for energy productionis still hot. “Each year we reclaim over 400 thousandtons of wood, more than 100 trucks per day. I wouldlike to spend a word for our industry, which is fac-ing the competition of powerful energy lobbies thatbuy wood to burn it, and they get tax incentives thatare charged on the energy bills of citizens. I can-not understand the rationale behind this, nor the in-novation in burning wood; it is more virtuous re-cycling it to make furniture rather than burn it in aboiler. If you recycle wood to make furniture, youhave no impact on the community, we don’t wantany tax facilitations, quite the contrary, we want alltax facilitations to be eliminated, the entire furnitureindustry is demanding that”. Today, for Saib, an eco-sustainable approach is es-sential. “Any production process innovation mustbe evaluated from an environmental impact per-spective. I am sure the costs are much lower thanyou normally think; ecology and economy often gohand in hand. Process innovation normally helpsimprove yield, and consequently, reduce con-sumption and environmental impact”. Producersand consumers have changed their attitude, look-ing at wood recycling as an added value. “Recently, also the furniture business has discovered the greenside, it has become a marketing asset. For years, furniture suppliers concealed the fact that a prod-

CORK PELLETS FOR CONSTRUCTIONSTecnosugheri, based in Paderno Dugnano (Mi-lano), is the Italian distributor of Corkpan from thePortuguese company Amorim. Cork for sustainableconstructions is still a “niche” material, thoughrecording increasing interest for its natural propertiesand new applications.“The crisis of the construction industry is there tobe seen – says Andrea Dell’Orto, marketing

manager – but maybewe are less affected aswe deal with a nicheproduct. The panel“Corkpan MD Faccia-ta” for heat insulationwith no additional coat-ing has introduced usto a number of de-signers looking for dis-tinctive visual impact”.Such application lever-ages the properties ofcork submitted to a

thermal roasting process. “The entire “Corkpan” supply chain has always beengreen, 100 percent natural, made using 90 percentenergy from fired processing waste and scraps. Thisprocess is fully natural, with Ec-marking andIcea/Anab certification for ethical and eco-sus-tainable products. Certification was achieved asroasted cork can be reused indefinitely and is 100percent recyclable". As to applications, “Corkpan”

is used as insulation for new or renovated buildings, especially brick and mortar constructions. Itsmost obvious application is in wooden houses.“Unlike blonde cork or wood fiber, “Corkpan” hasno added glue and the panels are formed by lever-aging the thermal roasting process. In this stage, through steam injection, cork grains expand, in-corporating air and releasing suberin and otherwaxy substances that bond the material. After cool-ing, waxes wrap up each grain and make it wa-terproof and resistant to chemical and weatheragents”. However, it is still a long way to find a place in theItalian construction market. “Using cork in con-structions is not common in Italy, we are trying toeducate and inform designers to fill the gap. Inthe near future, the challenge is to increase the sus-tainability of constructions, then we will be evenmore active on the market”.

COMPACT AND SUSTAINABLESolid, compact and affordable, that’s sustainabil-ity for machinery designed for "small” companies. In Vigonza (Padova), Fravol has been manufac-turing woodworking machine tools for over fiftyyears, especially machines to glue, butt, trimstraight panels and edgeband shaped panels, insmall and large batches, for handicraft work-shops and for furniture factories in Italy andabroad. They have 25 employees.“Business keeps going, but it is spread allover the world, not only in key markets likethe European Union, Russia or Africa. Some regions are recording modestgrowth, such as the United States, wherethe annual trend is plus 20 percent”, ex-plains Andrea Volpato, sole administrator. Today, in machinery construction, details

make the difference, espe-cially if they concern values like ener-gy saving, efficient production andequipment dimensions. “Customerscome to us with a spending budget inone hand and a ruler in the other, so ourkey targets are compact volumes, com-petitive pricing and energy saving, also based on new concepts for the mo-tors and the devices, offering more flex-ibility according to requirements. In thepast, we pioneered this approach”. How is the marketing responding to the

green approach? “In Italy, this added value is notrecognized and even minimum cost increases areconsidered unjustified, unlike what happens withGerman or Swiss customers. The idea should besubmitted later on, when the market is more ma-ture, and it makes more sense for producers of bigvolumes rather than small handicraft businesses”.For their customer target, Fravol has developed anapplicator of coextruded edges, “… leveraginghot air and pressure to heat the bonding face of theedge, with lower costs than a laser edgebandingmachine and less maintenance requirements overtime. Edgebanding with co-extruded edges requiresno glue, anti-bonding or cleaning fluids, thereforeit represents an eco-friendly edgebanding process. Moreover, it can be retrofitted on existing machines. Most of all, an important factor is its affordability".Same approach for the installation of the univer-sal pre-melting aggregate for Eva or Pur glue ingranules and cartridges, “… which helped slashcycle time in operations when required, plus offeringtime and energy saving. Using top-quality glue, theuniversal pre-melting aggregate allows to expandproduction flexibly, without stopping the plant to re-fill the glue tank and without any waste”. In the future, “we will reduce the number of installedaggregates, improving performance while reduc-ing costs and dimensions”.

LESS WEIGHT, LESS CONSUMPTION A sustainable machine not only saves energy, it isalso more compact and lightweight, with identicaltechnological performance. This is the basic con-cept for Vitap, based in Poggibonsi (Siena), sev-enty employees, manufacturing boring machines(small and medium size production, big models andCnc's for flexible cycles) and edgebanders (semi-automatic models for shaped and straight parts, andsingle-shoulder automatic machines) since 1954. Product innovation research is focused on these as-pects, explains Franco Tanzini, founder and busi-ness partner of Vitap, against the background of amarket that (especially in Italy) is still blurred.“When the crisis broke out, we developed new high-ly flexible numerical control machines, where the sus-tainability concept translates into lower energy con-sumption as well as more compact dimensions, asa lighter machine haslower mass to handle, and therefore lower en-ergy consumption”. Minimizing woodwaste is the secondmust. New machines“optimize panel cuttingand reduce stock re-quirements for compa-nies, helping further reduce costs for producers”. Vi-tap machines feature a system that, instead of us-ing vacuum pumps, exploits a natural process, called“Venturi” effect, that saves energy and space. Vitap’s export share is 98 percent, the most inter-esting markets are North and South America, UEand Russia, Asia, Northern and Southern Africa, andthe United States. They are in a favorable positionto see the impact of the green approach on thewood industry, a positive impact. “Working in 80 dif-ferent countries, we are noticing that awareness for

these issues varies in each country and from peo-ple to people. In more sensitive regions, we “sell”sustainability as an added value: a more compact, silent and equipped machine enhances the impactof our sales approach to the customer for their fi-nal purchase decision, together with overall prod-uct performance”. Besides sustainability, the futurealso looks at equipment and attention to the visu-al impact of finished products.

GREEN BRAINS FOR NUMERICAL CONTROLThe road to “green economy” also depends on soft-ware for numerical control machines. This is thebusiness of Ddx Group (Brembate di Sopra,Bergamo). “To meet the requirements of a market where com-panies are increasingly oriented to cutting con-sumption, for many years now we have been de-veloping software solutions that leverage the full po-tential of 3, 4 and 5-axis systems, while ensuringenergy and material saving”, explain Ddx experts.“All Ddx products adapt to different types of nu-merical control machines and handle all processstages: computer-aided design, import from ex-ternal software, tool and process management, po-sitioning of parts and subparts on the worktable,3D simulation of operations, and generation of thenc code for the machine”. Energy consumption for production is optimized byDdx Cam, that streamlines machine movements dur-ing the process and minimizes idle strokes. The Ddxsoftware packages are innovative in view of sophis-ticated functions such as 3D simulation and collisioncontrol. Machining process simulation is base on thereal 3D models of the customer’s machine, the work-table, the motors, the tools, the workpieces. Each mo-tion is driven by the software which, via the collisioncontrol module, identifies possible interference thatmay occur during operation. In case of negative re-sults, the software notifies possible anomalies to cor-rect and, when all stages have been executed prop-

erly, it generates the machine code. “The Ddx soft-ware package allows to check the correct setup ofoperations during the early design phases, beforegoing to the machine, preventing possible damageto equipment, as well as energy and materialwaste”. Sustainability turns into competitiveness.“If you choose eco-sustainable technology, not onlyyou guarantee environmental safeguard, but youalso increase a company's competitiveness whilereducing costs”.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REDUCTIONThe race to eco-sustainability in paints has sloweddown due to the crisis. However, research contin-ues, with the goal of reducing the environmentalfootprint of traditional solvent products that are moreand more requested. That’s the vision of Alessandro Pirotta, generalmanager of Sherwin-Williams Italy, the Italianbranch of the US giant Sherwin-Williams, a woodcoating specialist. “From January to September,Federchimica recorded a 5 percent decrease es-pecially in water-based and Uv ecological productsales for indoor and outdoor, due to the relentlessdecline of the construction and furniture markets, which is expected to continue. In the third quarter2013, demand increased compared to 2012 despitethe result versus the previous quarter is negative, just like the macroeconomic outlook for 2014. Thepositive side is that our customers are increasingtheir export shares, confirming that the foreign mar-kets are the only anchor for our production”. Sherwin-Williams Italy exports 65 percent of pro-duction directly, with expanding business in East-ern Europe (Russia is the second market after Italy),Asia and the Middle East; business is suffering inthe old Continent, especially in Italy, France andSpain. The problem is the added value of greenproducts. “The enthusiasm for these products in theearly 2000 is vanishing, unfortunately; customersaffected by the crisis have turned to more af-

fordable products to increase theircompetitiveness. Such trend mainlyimpacted water-based products, al-though they will continue to bring sat-isfaction for some types of furniture, such as kitchens”. Products in demand include high-sol-id solvent coatings, which containlower quantities of solvents. Sayerlack

(a Sherwin-Williams brand) is making progress inresearch, achieving major recognitions like the Mi-lan Polytechnic’s invitation to Mauro Tanelli, tech-nical manager of Sherwin-Williams Italy, to take partin the debate on the current production of eco-sus-tainable constructions and furniture. “We areworking hard on coatings using carbon alternativeslike castor oil, which help reduce impact in termsof emissions, and on projects to increase the dryresidue in solvent paints. The scenario has changedcompletely, the company is strongly committed inthis direction”.

ECO-SUSTAINABLE FROM START TO ENDFor over 50 years, Durante & Vivan in Ghirano diPrata (Pordenone) have been manufacturing andselling glues and adhesives for the wood indus-try in Italya nd abroad, for different applicationsand needs, including surface coatings andcurved panels, assembling, edgebanding, profilecoating and so on. “Eco” products are the key ref-erence. “Sustainability is less and less an abstractconcept – says Massimo Venier, R&D Manager– it is increasingly concrete and tangible in our dai-ly work of research, development and innovation. The market is showing increased awareness forthese topics".Glues are eco-sustainable from initial recipe to endof life. “Given the same bonding performance, weprefer raw materials from renewable sources, bi-

ological products that the market currently offersand that are often developed in partnership with outsuppliers. We opt for local raw materials to minimizeenvironmental impact from transportation. Evenplastic packaging contains significant quantities ofrecycled plastics”. On the application side, the reduction of applica-tion temperature allows to save energy and reduceemissions. A significant example is the new rangeof hot melt reactive polyurethanes with bio-poly-oils featuring low diisocyanate emissions, for thewood-furniture market and other sectors. Anotherexample to understand the evolution of glue prod-ucts comes from particleboard lamination, whereacetovinyl resins as alternatives to ureic glues aremore and more popular, as they eliminate formalde-hyde emissions. Specific acetovinyl grades havebeen developed recently, totally formaldehyde-free.Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) allow to analyzeproduct and process development accurately, calculating the carbonfootprint of a product ora company. New gluedevelopments in thewood-furniture industriestakes these factors intoconsideration. “Sustain-ability is a major drivingforce, but at the sametime, developments arealso driven by new solution demand from cus-tomers, by new substrates to bond, technical en-hancements, performance improvements and costreduction. Although at first sight some research anddevelopment drivers seem to be based on economicconsiderations only, making products with high-er and higher quality or producing them at lowercosts improves the industry's competitiveness and, consequently, the economic status of all people".

You can checkon the screen if the workingcycles are correct and opti-mized before sending theNc code to the machine, avoiding wrong processesand reducing waste. With DDX no more wrongtests on the machine:check the simulation on yourPc and send the Nc code to

THE ECO-FRIENDLY SOFTWARE BY DDXthe machine only if correct. DDX software package pre-vents damages on the ma-chine since it is equippedwith the collision detectionmodule. This module finds out anycollision that may occur dur-ing the machining process: itcontrols any movement ofthe machine, aggregates, tools, table, clamps and vac-uums, carriages, etc. Beforegenerating the Nc code forthe machine, the softwarereports any negative result tothe operator and, if every-thing has been correctly de-fined, generates the opti-mized programs for the ma-chine. The automatic collision de-tection module allows you tocheck on the screen beforemachining if the program iscorrect: therefore it reducestesting, ensures less mate-rial and power consumptionand prevents damages tothe system. Choosing green and eco-friendly technologies givesbenefits to the environmentbut also to your company, since it helps reducing costsand increasing your pro-ductiveness: that's why DDXcan play a key role in its cus-tomers’ company develop-ment. ■

topics into your business model. Resting on threepillars – environment, economy and society – sus-tainability is expanding the value creation area forcompanies, not only for their own sake, but alsofor all stakeholders: employees, customers, sup-pliers, shareholders, financial supporters, com-munities and society.

BUSINESS STRATEGY BEFORE SUSTAINABILITYStrategy is the key to success for all companies, while competitive advantage is the result of goodstrategy. Despite its popularity in business man-agement, the word “strategy” became an essen-tial lever for entrepreneurs and managers only inthe Eighties and Nineties. The turning point was thewidespread introduction of “competitive strategy”and “competitive advantage” concepts, developedby US Harvard University Professor MichaelPorter, the most eminent strategy scholar and au-thor of popular books, including “Competitivestrategy” and “Competitive advantage”. Porter’s most significant contribution was theidea that any business strategy should be built onthe possibility to create competitive advantagebased on factors related to the competitivenessof costs and differentiation, i.e. leveraging the fol-lowing factors. Key factors for cost advantage: scale economies;process technology; product design; supply chainexcellence; fixed to variable cost ratio; organiza-tion training; supplier relationships, and more.Key factors for differentiation advantage: scopeof product and service portfolio; functionality;product quality; level of service offered; customerrelationships; specialization of sales and distribu-tion channels; order management; quick on-time

SUSTAINABILITY AND BUSINESS STRATEGY A Mario Boroni Grazioli’s contributions, that we are pleased to feature in Italianwoodtech. The author explains how to build a competitive advantage in an ever-changing economic context.

In the past ten years, a different vision hasemerged for the relationship between enterpriseand competitiveness, recognizing environmen-tal protection and social responsibility as realcompetitive drivers, i.e. values to be taken into con-sideration to guarantee sustainable developmentand, consequently, business growth. This is thegreat challenge that sustainability is launching tomanufacturing companies, related to their capac-ity to support the transition from market economyto sustainable economy. In this process, a company must expand its scopeand fit into a wider context, where strategy becomesthe key element to direct your actions to the threegoals of sustainability: environmental safeguard, so-cial welfare and economic development. Today, sustainability has become a key driver oflong-term business growth, generating profitabil-ity by incorporating environmental and social

ers for value creation policies. Several surveys havebeen carried out in recent years about sustainability-related topics, whereby all results indicate that sus-tainability is a success factor for the future ofcompanies. A survey by Kpmg, a primary con-sulting firm in professional services to companies, confirmed that at least 60 percent of interviewedcompanies all over the world have adopted formalsustainability strategies. When asked to identify the greatest benefits offeredby their sustainability programs, they answered: im-proved image/reputation; compliance with laws andregulations; cost reduction; product and service dif-ferentiation; increased profitability; environmentalrisk control; customer loyalty; preservation of com-petitive capacity; value creation for shareholders;employee loyalty. Porter himself, together with M. Kramer, in an arti-cle published in Harvard Business Review maga-zine in 2011, introduced the concept of “SharedValue”, namely a set of policies and practices thatstrengthen the competitiveness of an enterprisewhile improving the economic and social conditionsof the communities where it operates. Porterstresses that a company’s competitiveness also de-pends on the social context and that the connec-tions between enterprise and society deliver a num-ber of opportunities that lead to growth and welfare. In 2012, the Commission for sustainable develop-ment of Confindustria published the “Paper of sus-tainability principles”, an ”addressing” tool for bothsmall and big enterprises. It’s ten principles defin-ing values and commitment as integral parts of busi-ness activities and the related processes for pro-duction growth. As a matter of fact, this approachexpands the scope of responsibility for companies, hence the “borders” inside which they have to beaccountable for their actions, responding to all in-ternal and external stakeholders. The Confindustria paper also represents an align-ment to the European Union’s 2015-2020 strategy, stating that corporate social responsibility (CSR) orsustainability must “… create social and sustain-ability values shared by society as a whole”. “Inthe future, the competitive advantage will only beachieved by the companies that have adopted sus-tainability principles and values. This means re-considering the business model, as well as prod-ucts, services, processes and technology”. (C. K.Prahalad, R. Nidumolu, M. Rangaswani from Har-vard Business Review-2009)

deliveries, and more. The search for competitive ad-vantages through cost leadership and product/ser-vice differentiation hasn’t always delivered the ex-pected benefits, because such strategy implies theneed for companies to have suitable skills and com-petence to obtain and retain such advantage. Theseskills are not always available or up to the strate-gic goals to be achieved. As a result, in the Nineties, business strategy start-ed to focus on internal business elements, in-cluding resources, staff skills, distinctive expertiseand production flexibility. This led to the conceptof “reorganization of business processes”, holdingthe promise of huge savings. The focus of businessmanagement turned towards the inside of com-panies, mainly to operating efficiency, to businessprocess reorganization and to customer service flex-ibility. Today it is acknowledged that both strategicvisions, internal and external, are not enough to sup-port business growth if they are adopted exclusively. The modern approach to strategy preferably takesinto consideration both external opportunities andinternal resources, as equally important factors toselect key strengths and to formulate a competi-tive strategy. “All companies need to have a competitive strat-egy, but this is much more important for small andmedium businesses, as they normally don't havehuge resources. SMBs must choose between a po-sitioning strategy that is hard to replicate by com-petitors or not interesting for them, because if it canbe easily imitated, sooner or later the biggercompetitors will do it.” (Michael Porter)

SUSTAINABILITY FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE In the age of sustainability, Porter’s competitive strat-egy and competitive advantage concepts are stillcore to any enterprise strategy. However, the sce-nario has changed deeply, due to the need of pur-suing the challenge of sustainable development –a concept that combines the three essential and in-divisible areas of environment, economy and so-ciety – and the evidence that environmental actionby itself is not enough to win the challenge. Evenpropensity to innovation alone is no longer enoughto make a sustainable company. You need a new governance of innovation, wherestakeholders are no longer constrained to the roleof recipients of a share of the social value gener-ated by the company, but they become key play-

clude transparency; compliance; research and in-novation; new sustainable products and services;interactive relationships with customers and sup-pliers; transparent communications inside andoutside; reputation and image. Customers and so-ciety are looking at companies and their culture froma new perspective. The evaluate initiative capac-ity, they appreciate technical and commercial re-sults; most of all, they urge them to assume otherroles than just wealth producers. In other words, from the business world they expect active par-ticipation to the growth of national and local com-munities.

IMPROVEMENT OF BUSINESS COMPETITIVENESS Some say the sustainability means competitiveness, adding that this does not automatically mean thatany sustainability action strengthens the compet-itive advantage of a company, but rather that cer-tain actions can strengthen and differentiate a com-pany, if they allow to create value for stakeholders. The way a company performs each activity is alsothe way it generates value for itself and its cus-tomers, as any value-creation activity uses physi-cal resources, human resources, internal and ex-ternal processes. Value-creation activities were gath-ered by Michael Porter into a model called “Valuechain”, that divides business activities into primaryoperations (internal logistics, external logistics, mar-keting and services) and support operations (hu-man resource management, innovation, infra-structures and provisioning). How effectively theseactivities are executed depends not only on the sto-ry, culture, competence and systems of a compa-ny, but also on the collaborations patterns with cus-tomers, suppliers, partners and allies. As sustain-ability represents a company’s strive to meeting thesocial and environmental expectations of differentstakeholders (employees, customers, suppliers, fi-nancers, shareholders, communities and society),it will inevitably affect value creation.

So, the key questions are: What is turned into val-ue by sustainability? How is value created? Whereis value created? You can identify four value chainareas to apply sustainability and to create com-petitive advantages through differentiation: cus-tomers, suppliers, business processes and repu-tation. Customers. They demand products with a social-

ORIENTATION TO SUSTAINABILITYCulture – together with environmental protection, social cohesion and economic growth – is the fourthpillar of sustainability. Culture is the common baseof mental attitudes, values and actions that drivepeople, communities and companies. Today, thegoals of companies are less and less limited to prof-it and economic results, while the recognition of theenvironment as collective value and the achieve-ment of social consensus are increasingly recog-nized values that can create benefits for the en-terprise. After all, in our economy based on the rightto have a job, with great difficulties to preserve thelevels of social welfare, an effective way to protectand develop the competence and peculiarities ofa company is to follow the principles of sustainability, through improved strategic capacity in the inte-gration of environmental and social needs with spe-cific product and service offers, and the businessprocesses adopted. The cultural and operating commitment of com-panies towards sustainability is focused on four keyareas of activity: environment, work, community andmarket. Environment. The priority is to reconcile environ-mental impact and ecological efficiency to achievesustainable development. Environmental culturespreading into society, supported by environmen-tal movements and shared by citizens, has alreadydriven most companies to new behaviors, such as:reduction of energy consumption; use of renewableenergy sources; reduction of carbon dioxide andother harmful gas emissions; the reduction of rawmaterials and other materials; the reduction of waste, the use of recyclable materials, up to a new mobilityconcept. Work. The priority is attention to workers safety andhuman rights. Companies are increasingly urgedto consider workers' health, work safety, youth em-ployment, equal opportunities, protection and val-orization of disadvantaged people, elimination oflabor under age, reconciliation of family and work.Communities. The priorities are social cohesionand the quality of relationships with the stakeholdercommunity. This includes social initiatives; chari-ty work; creation of foundations and no-profit or-ganizations; engagements with local institutions, closer dialog with stakeholders and stronger part-nerships with institutions and no-profit organizations. Market. The priority is focusing on the value chainand customer satisfaction. The core concepts in-

Page 49: xylon.safe-suite.it · Poste Italiane spa – sped.in abb.post. -45% D.L.353/2003 (conv. in L. 27/02/2004 n.46) art.1 - comma 1, LO/MI. Cepra - Cent ro direzionale Milanofiori - 1a

adopt sustainability as a characteristic feature oftheir culture. Sustainability translates into a num-ber of actions and in clearly defined areas. The setof deployed actions and practices feed the intan-gible resource assets to the benefit of the company’sfuture development. Finally, the “Differentiation ad-vantage” quadrant refers to companies that haveidentified sustainability as a core element of theirstrategy and a lever of competitive advantagebased on differentiation from competitors. In theindustrial domain, any action undertaken must beaimed at increasing competitiveness and prof-itability, also when you decide to invest in sus-tainability. However, it is a fact that sustainabilitymakes the enterprise system more complex, as itrequires to reconcile economic growth needs withenvironmental protection and social welfare. Toachieve this result, new business models should beadopted, able to integrate different value creationfactors both for the company and for stakeholders.“Sustainability has turned from constraint intobusiness opportunity, becoming the foundation ofan enterprise growth strategy”. (Sodalitas Foun-dation, from the survey “Being sustainable: a futuretense”, carried out in 2012).

environmental value. Sustainability becomes aconstituent of quality, and therefore a differentiationfactor. Sustainable products increase the efficien-cy of energy usage, optimize the use of raw ma-terials, reduce the quantity of waste, meet conformitycriteria, can introduce effective innovation from anenvironmental point of view, give information aboutuse and disposal. Suppliers. They can improve the overall compet-itiveness of customer companies. They are supplychain partners that adopt sustainability initiativesto safeguard the supply chain “meshes” upstream, minimizing the environmental impact of product life-cycles and meeting compliance rules, ethical andtransparency principles. Business processes. They support the integrationof competitiveness, environmental sustainability andsocial responsibility. They pursue different goals:efficient use of resources, reduction of environmentalimpact, innovation of sustainable products, de-velopment of clean technology, staff training in sus-tainability, transparent relationships. Businessprocesses are the key enablers to seize the op-portunities offered by sustainability-driven changes. Reputation. It’s about the image of a company associal actor and it can be a strong element of dif-ferentiation from competitors. It concerns the needto be considered as contributors of economicgrowth and actors that can generate environmen-tal and social value for the community.

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIES The previous remarks about the orientation of a com-pany towards sustainability values and practicesand the improvement of competitiveness though thebenefits of differentiation along the supply chain, can be represented as a matrix with four quadrants, each identifying a different strategic positioning. (see“Sustainability Strategies” table).

The “Sustainability culture absent” quadrantrefers to companies that know little about sustain-ability and deploy only limited voluntary actions tomeet the requirements of stakeholders. The “Con-formity practices” quadrant refers to companieswhere sustainability translates into the adoption ofprocedures and certifications in compliance withmanagement standards. Basically, sustainability isdriven from the outside, from demanding customers,or from competitive pressure. The “Sustainabilitypractices” quadrant refers to companies that

CLEAN ENERGY FROM WOODWITH GASIFICATION

From the first processing of wood to the productionof green energy, this is the leap forward that Pez-zolato of Envie (Cuneo) has made with the pro-duction of turnkey cogeneration plants based onthe gasification principle. The creation of Pezzo-lato Energia has been a milestone for the growthof the company. It is the fourth production line of

the company based in the Cuneo area, presentedlast July and designed to be integrated with theproduct range including chipping machines, discchippers, compost machines, automated equipmentfor the production of firewood and horizontal logsawing machines.

Founded in 1976 – since 2001 owner of the brandBongioanni specializing in machines and plants forsawmills – Pezzolato has consolidated its interestfor renewable energies focusing on the productionof medium/small-sized cogeneration equipmentbased on wood gasification. Within an economiccontext that is increasingly focused on the "envi-ronmentally sustainable” approach (reduction ofconsumption and emissions), the cogeneration ob-tained with this kind of plants does not only allowusers to optimize energy costs and reuse poten-tial production wastes cost-effectively, but aboveall to boost growth processes in the surroundingarea, thanks to the creation of short supply chain

Renewable energy sources from wood are not limited to biomass combustion, they also include gasification, the new frontier of environmental sustainability. This is the development undertaken by Pezzolato.

for wood wastes, with reduced environmental im-pact and considerably fewer emissions as com-pared to combustion.

The new Pezzolato Energia line offers “turnkey” so-lutions for the production of electric power from 50to 300 kWel and thermal energy for heating pur-poses. The benefits of the system are clear. Thanks to the gasification system, with one kilo ofwood you can obtain 1 kW of electric power and2 kW of thermal energy. The process in based onthe extraction of wood syngas through drying stages(200°C without air), pyrolysis (200°C – 600°Cwithout air), oxidation (1,000°C) and reduction(>700°C). The gas obtained, clean and similar tomethane, feeds the engine and thus activates theproduction of electric power, while machine cool-ing is used to produce hot water for heating.

The gasifier is fed with chips featuring optimal grainsize and maximum humidity level of 10 percent. Theace in the hole of Pezzolato is the control of thewhole processing line with pre-treatment of fuel ma-terials, an industry for which it can count on twen-ty-year experience, ranging from chipping, dryingand screening for thin/thick separation of materi-als before gasification. The compact design is a fur-ther “added value” of the finished plant: in order toproduce 100 kW/h electric power and 200 thermalenergy, the plant must contain a volume similar totwo containers of 40 feet (24 x 2.5 meters of depth)between cogeneration and pre-treatment. The central structure of the gasifier consists of apatented solution produced by a German companythat counts on a consolidated experience in the fieldwith several units produced. There are many growth

perspectives for this new energy source in Italy, asconfirmed by Pezzolato’s owner, Riccardo Pezzola-to, and the product manager, Erik Capellino.

Mr Pezzolato, have you decided to approach thewood gasification industry to ride the wave of re-newable energies and, also, to re-gain marketshares?“The market continues to be positive for us. We havedecided to approach gasification simply becausewe believe in renewable energies. Wood is an en-ergy source that we know and we are acquiringmore and more skills and expertise also in the gasi-fication sector. Close to the Pezzolato site in Envie,in 2011 we built – together with a partner – a 1 MWbiomass power plant with annexed district heat-ing (or teleheating) system. The development and implementation of thisequipment has taught us that it'’s easier to managesmall-sized machines: this has led us to start lever-aging the gasification technology”.

Your latest milestone was the takeover of Bongioanniin 2011…“Bongioanni was a “happy ending” challenge, weproduced plants all over Europe with key destina-tion markets in Germany, France and Austria, be-sides emerging countries where band saws are notso popular. Thanks to Bongioanni, Pezzolato hasobtained visibility all over the world. Despite industrydifficulties, the Bongioanni brand alone recordeda turnover above 4.5 million Euros last year, main-taining an important market share in Europe”.

How is the market reacting to gasification?“Thanks to incentives, even though they are not sohigh, the interest for wood gasification at nationallevel is not lacking, without forgetting that the cus-tomers are more and more aware and they do notwant to invest their money at random, but they wantto find effective and efficient solutions: all those whocan offer them are awarded by the market, also incase of strong competition. This could also be anencouragement for the evolution of the market it-self, managing a gasifier means indeed that newjobs are created with important positive effectsalso on the management of mountain areas”.

You are focusing on “small” equipment: for a fur-niture manufacturer, can this “zero mile” energy beinteresting?“For a small craftsman, this is a virtuous circle thatdoes not require high material handling. Big plantsare not needed to obtain good results also from aneconomic point of view. Consider that it is better tohave ten 100 kW plants rather than one single 1,000kW plant...”.

Mr. Capellino, you are monitoring the project evo-lution closely; which are the requirements for a shortwood gasification supply chain?“The optimal situation is to organize a short sup-ply chain collecting the materials from local forestrycompanies. The ideal location is represented bymountain/foothill areas or the wood industry thatgenerates much waste, but keep in mind that saw-dust cannot be used”.

Which are the requirements for raw material to begasified?“A 50 kW gasifier needs approximately 16 quintalswood per day, that is six cubic meters of chips. Branch-es can be used starting from five meter diameters inorder to obtain chips with suitable dimensions. Themachine can exclusively use virgin wood”.

Which is the target of these plants?“These plants are produced for those who can ben-efit from generated heat and who want and feel theneed to move away from non-renewable sources. We not only address companies in the wood in-dustry, but also agricultural companies in foothill ar-eas, which generally have wood availability and high

heat requirements to manage theproduction sites, from sheds to liv-ing areas. For example, a 300 kWpower plant for about 600 kW ther-mal energy generates enoughenergy to heat six thousandsquare meters approximately”.

Mr. Pezzolato: for this adventureyou need courage...“A company like ours is often at acrossroads: keep investing tryingto grow, or lose ground. Pezzola-to’s vision is to pursue growth, al-ways, gasification is the new chal-lenge”. ■

The new “PTH 250 Energy” chipping machine, specifically developed for chip gasification plants. Unlike standard chipping machines in the market featuring medium-small dimensions, it is able to produce big chips (class G40).

The application of high -performance glass con-tributes to increase the performance level of windowswith high energy efficiency for the construction in-dustry. These solutions include the “Glass6thermThermal” product range by Glass6therm, the Ital-ian brand in the glass industry owned by Glass6Group. The latest innovations include “Glass6therm0,3” multiple glazing, particularly effective for the re-duction of heat dispersion and, thus, energy con-sumption, with a UG heat transmission rate of 0.3

W/(m²K). Another key re-quirement is flexibility. “So-lar Control Variabile” isthe latest addition to the“Glass6therm Solar” rangededicated to solar con-trol, which improves theliving comfort reducingexpenses for air condi-tioning. It is a special lay-ered glass with a structurefeaturing a nanostructure

coating that changes its color to dark blue, to ensurethe highest level of sun protection. It can be adjustedwith a button that allows the user to change the in-tensity of energy transmission and light in five dif-ferent modes (from a TI of 50 percent down to 15 per-cent). “Acti Mirror”, a customizable solution, lever-ages all the features of special glass and the mostrecent technology in the areas of connectivity, mul-timedia content visualization and identification ofitems/people. “VedoNonVedo”, finally, is the speciallayered glass with Pdlc liquid crystal film: when crys-tals are crossed by an electrical field, they line upand the glass becomes transparent, while it becomessandy/opaque when no electrical activity is record-ed, ensuring privacy while letting light through at thesame time. ■

The “Expo 2015” event in Milan is “painted green”and looks at environmentally sustainable materialsand products for the creation of events, showroomsand buildings currently under construction. This isthe focus of “SiExpo - Sustainability and innova-tion for Expo 2015”, the online catalog designed toinclude innovative eco-friendly products and mate-rials that will be exhibited during the internationalevent. Organized by products and applications, di-vided into five main sec-tions (construction materi-als, interior decorations, ur-ban furniture, packaging andexhibition complements), thecatalog can represent a vis-ibility vehicle for eco-friendlyand innovative products fo-cusing on the topics of “Expo2015” (“Feeding the planet, energy for life”). The purpose is functional: “SiExpo” catalogue isaddressed to exhibiting countries, designers andcompanies involved in the project, as well as the gen-eral audience. In particular, designers and compa-nies can leverage a database allowing them to searchfor low environmental impact materials and prod-ucts through different selection filters, according tosustainability and innovation requirements. Thewhole operation is managed by Consorzio SiExpo, entrusted to develop, manage and maintain the in-teractive database. The organizations that are partof the project are two, they have decided to repre-sent the strong combination between the reuse of rawmaterials and wide-spectrum innovation. “Remadein Italy” association, founded by the Lombardy Re-gion, the Milan Chamber of Commerce, Conai (Na-tional Packaging Consortium) and Amsa Milano, pro-motes "made in Italy" products coming from recyclingactivities. The second organization is “MaterialConnexion”, the most important research and con-sulting center for innovative and sustainable process-es and materials which through a huge archive, bothphysical and online, including over 5,700 materialsand production processes, promotes the creation ofcontacts between material manufacturers and po-tential users (companies, designers, architects, students, etc.) to support them in the search for suit-able material solutions for their projects. ■

THE GREEN HOUSE STARTSFROM THE KITCHEN

Focus on “green product", but also (and above all)on the process. Starting from design up to final dis-posal. Scavolini, based in Montelabbate (PesaroUrbino), is one of the leading manufacturers of “madein Italy” kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms, andit has invested huge resources in the environmen-tal-friendly approach, at “360 degrees”. In particu-lar, design and supplier relationships have a vital im-portance. The “Ecodesign” business procedure pro-vides designers with the guidelines to develop in-creasingly eco-friendly solutions, while constant re-search on Life Cycle Assessment represents the ba-sic element to ensure improvements for the creationof environmentally sustainable products. In the Scavolini vision, an extended product lifecy-cle is the first step to reduce environmental impact. The company puts spare parts at customers disposalfor a long time, with original finishing or matching fea-tures, while for product management at the end of theirlifecycle it is advisable for consumers to opt for reuse(in second houses, garages, non-profit institutes orsecond-hand markets) and, in case products haveto be eliminated, it is better to separate the compo-nents that can be recycled (wood, glass, aluminum, electric and electronic devices and so on), supportingselected waste collection. Almost all materials usedby Scavolini can be reused to produce new materi-als or energy for approximately 90 percent.“The current economic situation has also affectedthe kitchen manufacturing industry”, says Gian Mar-co Scavolini, Quality and Environment Manager atScavolini. “However, we have succeeded in con-firming our leadership on the Italian market – wherewe have been leaders since 1984 – and we havealso recorded double-digit growth in foreign mar-kets, thanks to important and constant investments

in all areas, from production to retail. Our catalogis very wide in terms of both styles and technicalrequirements, for different price segments, and itallows us to reach a variegated audience at nationaland international level”. In 2009 the “Scavolini Green Mind” project wit-nessed the efforts of the company to contributemore actively to the development and spreadingof a new way to live and make business, with high-er awareness and respect for the environment.“Scavolini Green Mind” included several certifi-cations obtained by the company throughout theyears, such as the development of photovoltaicplants to produce green energy, the adoption of“Idroleb” environmental-friendly panels from Grup-po Saviola, 100 percent generated with reusedwood materials and with very low formaldehyde

For several years, Italian kitchen manufacturers have been anticipating and supporting a new eco-sustainable vision of process and product, implementing targeted investments, from design to finished furniture, up to end-of-life recycling.

Which benefits has this approach delivered? “Con-sumers in Italy as well as abroad are increasinglyattentive to this topic, and the strong sensitivenessand proactive engagement of Scavolini are theproofs of the great quality of all the products andthe brand value”. Eco-sustainability pays. “Customerfeedback has been extremely positive. Of coursethe attention and the efforts to present increasinglytechnologically advanced and, at the same time,environmental-friendly products to the market willremain strong, ensuring also the health of workerswith suitable processes”.

DEMATERIALIZED AND ECOLOGICALLess wood raw material (only from Fsc certifiedforests), more respect for the environment. And de-sign innovation. The direction taken by Valcucine, based in Pordenone, goes through the “demateri-alization” of semifinished products, for the devel-opment of kitchen furniture and accessories in thename of green economy.Founded in 1980, Valcucine is focusing on eco-sus-tainability with increasingly dematerialized and re-cyclable products, with zero emission of formalde-hyde, using woods coming from reforestation proj-ects managed by the Bioforest association. How-ever, it can hardly be stated that green products(and processes) are winning cards, at least in Italy.“Market trends differ from region to region”, explainsLeandro Cappellotto, sales manager. “We havea 40 percent export share and we are expectinggrowth”. Since 2007 the number of kitchens soldin Italy has halved, while foreign countries thatrecord a good trend include Russia, Germany,Switzerland, the United States and some countriesin South East Asia, unlike other countries most af-fected by the construction industry crisis such asSpain, Ireland and the Baltic Republics. The green approach in the kitchen area still payslittle. “It is not an element that boosts sales by it-self, but we will keep pursuing this direction, be-cause in foreign countries the sensitiveness for high-end products is very high”.An approach – the “green” one – which has beendeveloped throughout the years: “We started in1988 with “Artematica” program, which revolu-tionized the concept of furniture doors, using lessraw materials and no particleboard”. The result is“… an aluminum frame covered by a design pan-

el on the outside, laminated or made of another fin-ishing material, wood included. An idea of light com-ponent which has been applied also to worktopsand cabinets”. Particleboard has been replaced byrecyclable materials including aluminum, glass andsteel. Another key topic besides material recycla-bility is reuse, an area where the company is cur-rently developing its research activity, “so that theproduct or component can be reused, repaintedand repurposed". In the case of wooden kitchens, Valcucine employsparticleboard panels in compliance with thestrictest international regulations for formalde-hyde emissions, as well as hollow panels. “Usingwater-based paints, we have reduced the emissionsof toxic substances, both for workers on site as wellas for the whole product lifecycle, in addition wedo not use exotic wood types and 90 percent of oursuppliers are located within 30 km from our site. Ourproducts are almost completely made in Italy”.. From ethics to aesthetics. ”In some countries the val-ue of an eco-friendly approach is more appreciat-ed mainly for its aesthetic and technical impact.Dematerialized furniture doors ensure reducedwear of hinges and guides, thanks to a lower weight, and they eliminate the need to adjust doors over theyears, an appreciated benefit. In addition, glass andmetal make the kitchen more water resistant forlonger duration”. Focus also on service: “… for twokitchen models, besides reuse, we also guaranteethe free collection of the kitchen at our expenses toensure correct disposal, reuse and recycling”. ■

GREENWOODHIGH-TECH WOOD

The innovative product portfolio developed by Ma-terial ConneXion, an international research andconsulting network for innovative and sustainableproduction processes and materials, includespanels, surface elements and floorings based onthe use of bamboo (also known as “vegetablesteel”) to replace wood materials and ensure highvisual and mechanical performance, as well aswood material savings.Bamboo allows to obtain products, such as floor-ing boards, bamboo-based and multi-layer panels, with a resistance 160 percent higher than oak wood.Innovation also involves wooden parquet.Bolefloor (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) leveragesan innovative wood optimization system based onthe processing of non-linear boards with curved pro-file, which is based on the natural structure of theoriginal log. This machining process allows us toreduce forest cutting by up to 20 percent comparedto the use of a standard straight board parquet. The axes reach a length of 3 meters with widthsranging from 150 to 300 millimeters (with slight lo-calized natural variations), while solid wood avail-able thicknesses are 20 and 13 millimeters, withmulti-layer options of 18 and 13 millimeters for usein floorings characterized by temperature variationsor powerful flooring heating systems. ■

Composite extruded wood, eco-friendly and 100percent recyclable, is a new innovation frontier. Thisis the specialization focus of Greenwood, a com-pany of Gruppo Bizeta based in Salzano (Venice).Composite wood is made of raw wood dust, pro-duced from selected wastes of the wood industryand an environmental friendly polyolefin plastics toensure protection and water-proof features; a so-lution that ensures the preservation of aesthetic fea-tures of raw material and the benefits of plastics.Applications are multiple, from the development ofBriccole (Dolphins), the typical mooring structuresfor lagoon town (the first-prize winning project at thefifth edition of “Premio Regionale per l’Innovazione”),to high-tech products for constructions and interiorarchitecture. Flexibility of use is one of its features. The Greenwood range includes “Deck” lines ofcomposite wood boards, “Plug&Play” line providedwith carbon fiber radiant system for in-floor heat-ing for outdoor environments (porches, balconies, arcades and verandas) and the new “Deck Mu-rano” in different color shades.A successful story of research: Greenwood rankedfirst in the “Ecodesign” category of the 2013 edi-tion of “Premio per lo sviluppo sostenibile” (Sus-tainable Development Award), promoted byFondazione per lo sviluppo sostenibile andEcomondo, sponsored by the Ministry of EconomicDevelopment. ■

“GREEN” VOCATION IN THE DNA

A production site located in awine-growing area in Miral-duolo di Torgiano, Perugia. And a green approachdeeply rooted in the entre-preneurial DNA of four gen-erations, from forest man-agement to finished prod-uct. Gruppo Margaritelli, owner of the Listone Gior-dano brand (wooden floor-ings and coatings) is focus-ing on the design-sustain-ability combination. The brain is in Umbria, thesource for the supply of Pefccertified raw materials is inFrance, in Fontaines, Bour-gogne. Same efforts in SouthAmerica, with internationalcooperation plans for eco-certification of tropical woodspecies. The ace in the holeis the creation of a “noble for-est” in Città della Pieve, nearPerugia, with the planting ofhigh quality French oaks for

the development of an "eco-friendly" supply chain. Producing in a sustainableway is not enough if you donot include also a far-reach-ing action to promote theresults and support the cul-tural enhancement of the in-dustry and not only. Thebusiness card of the grouptoday is called “This is myForest”: starting from theattention to forest resources,Listone Giordano has pro-posed to its audience thetopic of "taking care" of some-thing you care about, fromgeographic areas to culturalheritage, up to the forest it-self, leveraging all the po-tential of social networks, video arts and artistic pho-tography.

How did you launch the“green supply chain” strate-gy from forest to finishedproduct?“Our presence and experi-ence in France for over fiftyyears has generated the“Original Green” project, characterizing the productionof Listone Giordano, fo-cused on the sustainablemanagement of forests andmachining processes”, says

Andrea Margaritelli. “UnlikeItaly, France has focused onthe cultivation of certifiedforests, doubling its forestsurface in one hundred yearsand trebling the volume ofwood with top quality trees.Following this example, inCittà della Pieve we have cre-ated a “noble forest” ofFrench oaks, so as to have astrong supply chain, in-creasingly connected to theworld of sustainable archi-tecture, reforesting an areathat was used for agricultur-al purposes with prestigioushardwood, obtaining bothFsc and Pefc certification".

Which transformations werenecessary for operations andproducts?“Since the beginning of theNineties, Listone Giordanohas been presenting pre-finished wooden flooringswith eight finishing coatswithout solvents, in a periodwhen attention was not fo-cused on this topics, yet. Wehave been one of the firstcompanies to use no sol-vents in production, payingattention to gluing process-es and formaldehyde re-duction. In order to give val-

ue to this approach, the fo-cus has moved from theproduct to the final con-sumer, with the world of re-tail and sales networks, in or-der to ensure visibility to hid-den values. Today we havea network of over 600 salesoffices, 300 of which in Italyand the rest in over thirty

countries around the world, completely dedicated to par-quet”.

Will you take new directionsto strengthen the eco-sus-tainable approach?“Sustainability is the rightway. Today being “green” istaken for granted; the prod-uct must be ecologically cor-rect and sustainable and, atthe same time, it has to en-sure a great visual and emo-tional value. We are movingalong a line between envi-ronmental sustainability anddesign, still an unexploredterritory for the world ofwooden floorings”. ■

A positive balance for one of the few exhibitionskeeping up with the market. The slight drop in square meters and visitors did not affect this event, continuing to boast credibilityand reliability.

Let’s clear up this thing immediately. A drop - thoughlimited - was recorded. Both for square meters andvisitors. As to visitors, the final press release reporteda drop by 6 percent and, if we are not wrong, thepercentage is more or less the same as for net ex-hibition square meters. It can be conceivable. Howmany exhibitions would like to say the samethings at the end of the event? Too many, unfortu-nately. But there is no need to be afraid of figuresor to find an explanation at all costs, trying to de-scribe what is under everybody's nose. So, let’s leave this topic – which does not attract usthat much – to others, for it will only lead us to fore-gone considerations and useless analysis. This is the market, ladies and gentlemen, whetheryou like it or not.

Thus, 16 thousand visitors during the four daysof the event, from October 15 to 18, for the first timefrom Tuesday to Friday. This fifth edition recordeda significant presence of foreigners, who continueto appreciate the event despite it is not held in anexhibition area at the center of the universe. Oneof several peculiarities that makes Sicam a “strange”event we all know. Many, as we were saying, visitors from abroad:about 35 percent of visitors arrived in Pordenonefrom 94 countries in five continents.“The strong value of Sicam – commented CarloGiobbi, the organizer of the exhibition – for inter-national markets has been consolidated, especiallyfor emerging markets that we are looking with thehighest attention”. “It is a very high percentage – he continued – thatmakes us clearly understand what is the position-ing of Sicam in the global exhibition market: we cansay that the world of the furniture industry in Por-denone attended the event, this year in a more rel-evant way than in the past”.

SICAM, GOOD RESULTS FOR THE FIFTH EDITION AS WELL!Germany and Russia reached the top positions inthe ranking by country. About 9 percent of foreignvisitors spoke German, 8 percent Russian. Importantfigures, mainly for Russia because, as the final pressrelease wrote, “…it allows us to evaluate how thepromotion activities of Sicam in emerging marketsalso in the Bric area are turning into real businessrelationships for exhibiting companies”.Europe is obviously the reference market, with 70percent of foreign visitors. Extremely interesting, 21percent of visitors arrived from Asia “… a presence– the organizers said – that is the result of the con-stant promotion work of Sicam carried out in thatpart of the world during recent years”.“Another confirmation that we had from our talks withdifferent exhibitors – Giobbi added – is that Sicamalways records the presence of operators that havehigh decision-making power in their compa-nies: and this is a basic element for those attend-ing the event, because the special format ofSicam is based on the capacity to generate per-sonal relationships. Having a huge number of de-cision-makers becomes the factor that generatesadded value to the amount of contacts acquired”.But the organizer of the Pordenone-based event didnot forget that we also have to play at home andhe promptly added: “From the analysis of visitor reg-istrations and according to what exhibitors said, wecan say that all reference companies visited the ex-

hibition during these days: Sicam remains the mainexhibition to control the Italian market, which remainsone of the most important markets for the furnitureindustry; this is beyond all questions”.In the aisles we breathed a good level of satisfac-tion: this period is complicated, but Sicam has notdisappointed expectations and it has confirmed itsvalidity and effectiveness in generating contacts andrelationships. It is important to note the presence of 486 exhibitors(seven percent less than in 2012), who decided toattend the event in Pordenone this year as well, cov-ering about 13 thousand square meter exhibitionsurface. 130 exhibitors, 27 percent of the total, ar-rived at the expo center from 27 countries, main-ly from Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ro-mania and Austria. All was well-organized, as usual: from catering(proposing for the first time also vegetarian recipes)to the increased frequency of bus shuttle trips toand from Venice and Treviso airports, from thesmartphone app (supporting the visit for the most“technological” ones) to spaces for Islamic oper-ators, who could celebrate the Feast of Sacrificein a reserved room on October 15.We were almost forgetting: the next edition is sched-uled from 14 to 17 October 2014, again with the newoff-weekend agenda from Tuesday to Friday. No one will take it bad if,reading the press releasesfrom organizers, we thoughtwe were writing about the“mother of all battles”. Anevent, invented at least twen-ty years ago, that has beenso successful that it has reaf-firmed and magnified a con-cept that has turned into aparadigm. Low ceilings, softatmosphere, distinctive style, compact spaces were not in-vented by Zow, but with Zowthey have showed their fullpotential and attractiveness. And you cannot deny that, more recently, the exhibitionand its “sisters” in differentcountries had to face verydifferent situations from whatthey had imagined. And weshould not forget the “chal-lenge” that has resulted intothe rise of another show thathas interpreted these andother concepts. But we will not deal with thisstory here. So, congratula-tions to Zow for what it hasbeen able to achieve, forthe experience it has devel-oped, for the storms it hasgone through to be onceagain back under the spot-lights in Bad Salzuflen, itscradle, its ideal location, theorigin of its life. Its mission isgoing to be reaffirmed andrejuvenated at the event inthe German town from 10 to13 February 2014, when theinternational event dedicatedto furniture and interior de-sign (so runs the payoff) willbe back on stage.“We expected 600 exhibitorsapproximately on an exhibi-

tion area of 17 thousandsquare meters”, said HorstRudolph, Managing Directorof Clarion Events Deutsch-land GmbH, event organiz-ers. “We are quite satisfiedwith registrations a fewmonths before the opening, the situation confirms thatZow is important for the entirefurniture industry system”.

In Bad Salzuflen, all productcategories will be repre-sented, as well as most bignames of semifinished ma-terials and supplies, thoughwith few exceptions. There will be a strong focuson innovative products andsolutions, as well as a fewtopics that have always beenclosely monitored by theGerman exhibition, at least inprevious editions. Among these, workpieceidentification during theprocess via a Rfid tag (radiofrequency identification), or

lightweight panels. Wirelesstraceability will have a ded-icated area in hall 21 (“Rfidfactory”), while hall 22.1 willpresent the latest designtrends using lightweight pan-els, high-thickness hollow-core panels with a visual im-pact that creates a real de-sign experience, under thecoordination of the “Light-weight Construction As-sociation”.

Zow 2014 will be a new mile-stone in the history of thisshow. We remind you that acollaboration agreementhas been recently signedby Clarion Events Deutsch-land and the Bad Salzuflenexpo center to host the ex-hibition in its original locationuntil 2018.“The extension of our agree-ment is a strong signal: Zowrepresents the industry andit is the result of a relationshipbetween industry and terri-

tory that we cannot deny”,said Horst Rudolph. Taking acentral place in the EastWestphalia region, wherefurniture is represented atits best, is an added value noone is willing to give up.

The next Zow will cover fourhalls: 20, 21, 22.1 and 22.2.“We discussed with the expocenter management and de-cided not to use hall 19,while concentrating our of-fer”, added Horst. Hardware, traditionally exhibited in hall19, will be place in hall 22.1next February. There was no alternative, considering that a few man-ufacturers of this industrypreferred to be relatively“cautious” and not attendZow 2014. Is it a transitory"crisis" or a new situationthat the German exhibitionwill have to face soon? InFebruary we will get an an-swer... ■

From October 2 to 5, the AlpiMilan showroom (www.alpi.it),located in J&V Store via Mel-zo 7, became the stage for itslatest developments. Theprotagonists were “AlpidoorAtelier”, the expansion ofthe “Alpi Atelier” collection, where woods multilaminarare processed as if theywere fabric, and the line“AlpiSoul”, evolution of theprevious “AlpiRaw”.

“AlpiDoor Atelier”, whosedesign is coordinated byMatteo Ragni, is the newfamily of door panels, pri-marily addressed to archi-tects and designers whowant to create custom port, even in small quantities. Therange is available in three dif-

ferent textures: leaf, herring-bone and column. The fea-ture that characterizes thethree designs is able to keepthe same plot of the design, even after the downsizingof various widths. The “Alpi-Door Atelier” also allows youto give a touch of uniquenessto the finished product: pro-fessionals can conceive, de-sign and have manufacturedtheir own decoration to directit to a specific project.

The expansion of the “Ate-lier” Collection regards theinclusion of new shades of"warm" within the existingcolor palette. Alps offers anenrichment of the range ofshades such as mud, thedesert and the turtledove.

Textures and sophisticatedtones are the protagonists ofan advanced project, whichresults in a product, proces -sed and treated as if it werefabric.

“AlpiSoul” represents the nat-ural evolution of the “Alpi-Raw” line, which was re-named to better describe its

essence. The particular sur-face of the “AlpiSoul” woodevokes the idea of an agedwood over timed, naturallyeroded by weather and mir-ror of his own history. The “AlpiSoul” woods areprefinished and supported,so ready to be applied with-out the need for further fin-ishing. Mud, desert, ice and

a special effect "spatula"contribute to widen the al-ready large family of“Alpilignum”.

From the colors of the rain-bow, to the precious pat-terns and faithful reproduc-tions of the rarest and mostprecious essences, Alpi col-lections tell the poetry of theunexpected uses of woodthrough imagination and cre-ativity. Wood is a renew ableraw material, but it comesfrom a sustainable and re-sponsible management, con-ducted with full respect for theenvironment and human, concepts in which Alpsstands out. Quality, respon-sibility and eco-design arethe added values enclosed ineach timber Alpi. ■

holders like jackets on aclothes rail and are ready inthe practical magazine standfor their next usage.

Using the Smart-Strip Mag-azine® has many advan-tages: one of them is theenormous time saving. Edg-ings no longer need to beconstantly removed and re-trieved and are available atall times for immediate use.Partial rolls are stored safe-ly and correctly. Another ad-vantage is that the edgingsalready hanging in the mag-azine are readily available. Itis possible to change theedging quickly at any time bysimply inserting the edg-ings. The moveable maga-zine stand allows an easy

storageeven insmall workshops. An additional ad-vantage is that it iseasy to monitor theamount of edgingtape remaining.

To load the maga-zine simply set upthe roll on the mag-azine and insert it.Refilling or loadingis done in a matterof seconds. Themagazine is suit-able for all edgingrolls from 0.5mmup to 3mm thick. Differentedge widths can be storedby adapting the magazineusing the appropriate spac-ers.

Numerous innovations en-sure safe working on theedge banding machine. Asafety device protects fromaccidental unrolling of theedgings. In addition the“Smart-Strip Magazine®” isadjustable from 65cm to100cm and therefore adaptsperfectly to the size of theedging roll. The easy setupof even heavy and large rollsensures that the edging isconsistently applied to thework piece.

The Ostermann range for“Smart-Strip Magazine®” in-cludes the moveable maga-zine stand with ten individualmagazines for 23mm edg-ings. All components arealso available individually. These include of course thefour sets of spacers forwidths of 33mm, 43mm,55mm and 65mm. ■

GRASS“TIOMOS MIRRO” AND “TIOMOS M9”

Discotelsisal (www.discotelsisal.it) is a leadingmanufacturer of abrasives and sanding wheelsmade with both natural and synthetic abrasivesFrom the beginning, in 1957, Discotelsisal has fo-

cused on technological re-search and product spe-cialization as strategic factorsof development: no coinci-dence that many of our in-novations have become apoint of reference in theworld of abrasives and sand-ing. Solid construction, ease of use and adaptabil-ity to various workings, characterize the sandingwheels made by Discotel-sisal.The company covers a totalof 5,000 square meters me-tres and countson more thanforty employees and an ex-tensive network of world-wide sales. Thanks to the over fifty yearspresence on the market, Dis-cotelsisal has become apoint of reference for pro-fessionals from the fields ofwood, paint, metals and ce-ramics.The company offers a com-plete range of sanding solu-tions for any kind of wood,Mdf, solvent paints, Uv and

water based paints, designed to solve the partic-ular needs of each customer. The wide range of production places at the top nonwoven flap wheels, impregnated non woven flapwheels flap, emery paper interleaf flap wheels, emery cloth interleaf flap wheels, convolutewheels, polyurethane wheels and non wovendiscs and hand pads. ■

The product developers of the German-Austrianbrand manufacturer Grass (www.grass.at) demon-strate their ability to anticipate trends with two newadditions to the “Tiomos” range. “Tiomos Mirro” and“Tiomos M9”, two more milestones of the uniquehinge system “Tiomos” for exclusive bathroom andliving spaces. For its outstanding logic of detail,“Tiomos” immediately won an honourable mentionin the “Red Dot Award 2010”. The jury was thoroughlyimpressed amongst others by the sophisticated in-ner workings of the hinge arm which is outwardlypuristic in design. This element conceals the inte-grated damping technology that allows tool-free ad-justment as well as offering physically optimised kine-matics which enable furniture doors to be openedwith exceptional ease. In the front connection for top-class mirror and glass doors, Grass has accom-plished an elegant solution with “Tiomos Mirro”. Thehinge system is fixed to a stainless steel adapter onthe door using an eccentric screw. That means nodrilling of the glass. The hinge arm can also be fit-ted to existing self-adhesive adapters without anyproblem. Alongside the well-engineered fixing tech-nology that ensures a firm seating while retaining animpression of lightness and airiness on slender glasssurfaces, “Tiomos Mirro” now also enables the useof the proven, fully integrated “Soft-close” dampingfor the finest glass and mirror doors. The entire damp-ing technology is concealed inside the hinge. Con-sequently, the hinge is outwardly identical, either withor without “Soft-close” damping. Specially conceivedfor use with very slender furniture doors and mitredapplication on all four sides, “Tiomos M9” featuresan extremely shallow hinge cup. Even with a frontthickness of just 10 millimetres, the unique hinge sys-tem remains solidly seated in any position. ■

The protagonists at Sicam2013 were the new highstrength and antibacterial fin-ishings with the new handlesthat extend the “Basic” col-lection made by Pamar(www.pamar.it) .The compa-ny has always made designand advanced technology itsstrong point and it presentedin Pordenone the results of itsconstant research. of this Pamar has designed anddeveloped new finishingscovering shades, tones andtextures of the most popularmetals used in design andarchitecture. They are ob-tained thanks to a new pro-

tective paints created withnew generation, nano-ce-ramic, anti uv and with directadhesion resins. Applicableon painted objects or oncustom-made projects, thenew product increases thedegree of brilliance, depthand gloss of surfaces to-gether with the ensure of anhigh resistance to corrosion. The new finishings of Pa-mar have been tested andcertified in the Catas labo-ratories, a reference point inItaly and worldwide about re-search and product testing. The new finishings of Pa-mar have been tested for cor-rosion resistance and theyhave been considered ab-solutely efficient. After 200hours of exposure to waterand sodium chloride, the fin-ishings have been revealedwithout any signal of wearand deterioration. This ex-clusive treatment applied toindoor and outdoor handlesand knobs provides impor-tant advantages: it protectsmetal surfaces making thehandles highly resistant tohumidity, salt corrosion, ther-

mal shocks, chemical sub-stances, food, hot and coldliquids, household cleaningproducts, wear, artificial ra-diation and ageing. The products of the trans-parent nano-ceramic andantibacterial collection, test-ed in Catas laboratories, have instead an high effica-cy against gram-positive andgram-negative bacteria, in-hibiting their growth. Thebenefits related with the us-age of this process are mul-tiple: from maintaining a verylow or zero level of germs onthe surfaces of the treatedhandles, to an excellent hy-giene of the product throughthe years thanks to the re-markable durability of thetreatment. Applicable to alltypes of paints, this newprocess is available withopaque-transparent andglossy-transparent finishings. The handle “Mn2301”, de-signed by Gordon Guillau-mier, has got at the sametime elegant, rigorous and

essential features. It can beintegrated in various types offurniture: in the living area, bedrooms or in kitchens andbathrooms. Original and witha more structured and "ar-chitectural" cut are the twohandles “Mn2313” and“Mm2307”. Pinuccio Bor-gonuovo realized the designof the “Mn2313”, created inzamak with an asymmetricalbut practical and ergonom-ic shaped that is recom-mended also for slidingdoors. The ”Mn2307” in za-mak, designed by MarioMazzer, has got a captivatingaesthetic thanks to its origi-nal and versatile lines: thereare many different effectsthat can be achieved with thedouble inclination of the sur-faces. Applicable to furniturein living and night areas, it isparticularly suitable forkitchens and bathrooms. Moreover, the new techno-logical finishings can be ap-plied on all these new mod-els of handles. ■

LAMINAMTHE NEW “KAURI” COLLECTION

The range of Vauth-Sagel (www.vauth-sagel.de)waste separation systems is now even more com-prehensive: the new variants perfectly comple-ment the existing Vauth-Sagel product spectrum, which includes the “Öko liner”, the “Öko flexliner”,the “Öko center” and the “Öko freeliner”. With thecurrent additions to its waste separation portfolio,Vauth-Sagel has not only considerably increased thenumber of available container variants, it has also op-timised the utilisation properties and the design.Whereas six different plastic containers were previ-ously fitted to the established systems, kitchen fit-ters now have 24 individual standard types availablefor installation. These differ in height (145, 220, 260,330 and 430 mm), in width (115, 185, 230 and 315mm) and in depth (190, 300 and 380 mm), offeringvolumes ranging from 4 through to 39 litres. The op-timisations, with the two carrying handles per con-tainer being just one example, are already availablefor the standard range. With its numerous details, theadditional handle – previously, there was only one– offers further utilisation properties. To this end, the handles virtually completely coverthe edge of the container when lowered, so that thereis no contamination between the handles and thecontainer rim. Furthermore, the edging of the plas-tic containers have a cut-out on the outer edge en-abling easy access to the handles particularly if spaceis tight. Furthermore, fixing the bag has also beenoptimised, which is now completely held in place be-neath the lowered handles. And the Vauth-Sagel en-gineers have even thought of a special insert that en-ables the suspension of two waste bags inside onelarge container. ■

Inspired from the most rare and precious wood inthe world, from which it takes its name, "Kauri", thenew collection Laminam (www.laminam.it) pre-serves in its texture track of a wood extremely con-trasted, powerful, primal, which is found only in veryrestricted area of the marshes of New Zealand. Thememory of the material inspirational remains evi-dent in the veins, macroscopic and pull, “Kauri”slabs which give a strong trait. The soft tone that characterizes the chromatic scaleleaves room for endless possibilities of installation, from the traditional offset tone on tone, to patch-work, where the colors are brought together in har-mony to create a surprising effect. “Kauri” trees, felled by cataclysms in the distant past and re-mained intact under the mud of the marshes formore than fifty years old, are extracted from theground just like you do with the gold and, once gotto the light, are dated by Auckland university lab-oratories with the method of carbon-14. Despite thethousand-year stay under the mud, the fossilwood extract is neither rotted or petrified and canbe worked like a just cut wood. The result is an ab-solutely extraordinary material, also for its size whichreach 70 meters in height and nine feet in trunk di-ameter. Ancient, fascinating, rare and exclusive:the unique characteristicsthat distinguish “Kauri” trees are consistent with thephilosophy that distinguishes Laminam actionconstant research and development for the creationof new products. "Kauri" will be available in threecolors: white, beige and gray and in two differentsizes, 1000x3000 mm and 333x3000 mm. ■

The Turkish economic situation con-tinues to be characterized by a strongdynamism, despite the 2012 closedwith a Gdp growth rate of 2.2 percent, much lower than the extraordinarypace of development that the coun-try has seen in the previous two years(9.2 percent in 2010 and 8.8 percentin 2011, among the highest rates in theworld).

The sharp slowdown of last year wasnot unexpected, however, since theTurkish government had long pledgedto lead a "soft landing" of the econo-my to counteract some of his chron-ic unease, including the current ac-count deficit (come to an unsustain-able threshold of 10 percent of Gdpat the end of 2011) and a rate of in-flation, always closing in 2011, dan-gerously high (10.45%). To such measures were then addedand amplified the effects of a nega-tive international economic situation(starting with the European Unionand the implications on the econom-ic-commercial consequent to the“Arab Springs”), demonstrating howthe Turkish economic system is deeplyinterconnected and sensitive to theirpartners trend.

In general, the Turkish economic sys-tem owes its excellent performance inthe last decade to structural reformsintroduced in line with the Eu acces-sion process and the strength of itsbanking system, marked by strictrules of discipline after the crisis in theyears 2001-2002. The main public ac-counts show a positive trend, al-though the 2012 closed with ratiospublic debt/Gdp (49.9%) and deficit/Gdp (5.9%) in net growth over the pre-vious year. ■
