The Rotary Club of
Belize was formed
in 1957 and is the
first Rotary Club in
Belize. Since its
inception, the
c lub 's weekly
meetings have been held midday on
Wednesday s at the Radisson Fort George
Hotel. At that time, the Fort George's
manager, Joe Crosey, contacted the Rotary
Club of San Pedru Sula, Honduras who
referred him to the District Governor, Jimmy
Butler of Panama.
Joe then got eleven other businessmen and
professionals together. The club's charter
and induction ceremony was held on July 7,
1957. District Governor Jimmy Butler did the
honors and President Abraham “Brajin”
Bueso of the Rotary Club of San Pedro Sula
did the proposing and presented the club
with its bell which is still used today. The
certificate formally admitting the “Rotary
Club of Belize, British Honduras” to Rotary
International was signed on July 31, 1957.
Joe Crosey became the club's first president.
Rotary International President Joe Abay and
his wife Eula visited our club in 1962. Since
then the Rotary Club of Belize has
contributed significantly in the building of
the nation of Belize.

In 1996, this gracious mansion was renamed the “House of Culture” and extensive renovations undertaken to retain the architectural integrity of the building while converting it for public use. The House of Culture is open daily for tours of the original furnishings and silverware from the days of the colonial governors combined with exhibitions by Belizean artists.
Also on the grounds is the ‘Sea King’, a beautifully restored wooden tender.
The House of Culture is home to the Institute of S o c i a l a n d C u l t u r a l Research and is also a popular venue for social even ts and open a i r concerts.House of Culture, Belize City
