The holiday is celebratedevery year by most Jews on

the 14th (others on the 15th)of the Hebrew month ofAdar, or late winter/earlyspring.

The story begins in thefourth century B.C. in Persiaafter the Babylonian de-struction of the Temple inJerusalem and the resultingexile of Jews. Esther is cho-sen to marry King Ahasu-erus of Persia, ruler of thecivilized world, who did notknow his new bride wasJewish.

Her cousin, Mordechai, was a particular target ofthe anti-Semitic Prime Min-ister Haman, who per-suaded the king to issue adecree ordering the exter-mination of all the Jews onthe 13th of Adar.

Fearful, Esther informedthe king that she was Jewish

and requested that her peo-ple be spared.

The king, realizing thatMordechai was never re-warded for once saving hislife, ordered Haman behanged on the same gallowsthat Haman built for Morde-chai.

The king also gave Estherand Mordechai permissionto write a new decree thatgranted the Jews permissionto defend themselves againsttheir enemies.

On the 13th of Adar thatyear, the Jews throughoutthe Persian Empire mobi-lized and killed the enemieswho had planned to killthem.

On the 14th of Adar, mostJews worldwide celebrated, with residents of walled cit-ies killing more enemies on

the 14th and celebrating onthe 15th.

Mordechai was favoredby the king for uncoveringan assassination plot,Rabbi Rosenblum said. It isan example of a little detailthat happens when it needsto. This is what happens toall of us.

Mr. Spence, a chemist, also invented pieces and theglass color bittersweet or-ange.

I personally thought itwas really ugly it was sortof like an orange milk glass, she said.

Because of the colors pop-ularity, other glass compa-nies came up with similarcolors and pieces as thoseproduced at L.E. Glass, buther father didnt share theformula for his orange glass.

My dad said that everyglass man takes a secret to

the grave and that was his,Ms. Spence said.

Ms. Spence followed herparents footsteps and at-tended Allegheny College. She also obtained her mas-ters degree from RutgersUniversity. Now 73, retiredand living in Delaware, Ms.Spence had a varied careerworking at several organiza-tions and companies includ-ing: the Appalachian Re-gional Commission, the Na-tional Association of Coun-ties, the California Depart-ment of Transportation andthe National Railroad Pas-senger Corp. [The Spence Group was]

an association managementfirm that served severalsmall, volunteer-driven as-sociations, she said.

In 1992, Ms. Spence de-cided to sell her companyand return to her roots.

I wanted to work for anassociation that was affili-ated with glass, she said.During her research, she dis-covered the Society of Glass& Ceramic Decorators. Shewas hired as their executivedirector and served thereuntil she retired in 2000.

Over the years, Ms.Spence collected over 100pieces of black glass, some-thing L.E. Smith was wellknown for, and numerousother pieces.

When she was downsiz-ing, Ms. Spence donated herblack glass collection to theMount Pleasant Glass Mu-seum. That caught the atten-tion of Cassandra Vivian, board president and directorof the museum.
