IntroductionThe Audiovox XM XR9 Satellite Receiver processes thesatellite signals received by the externally mounted antenna(purchased separately as part of the Home, Vehicle or BoomBox Kits). The XR9 recognizes and decodes the incomingXM® program information and provides an audio signal toyour radio or other audio output equipment.

NOTE: The XM® signal can be received andprocessed virtually anywhere as long as thereare no obvious satellite signal obstructionssuch as nearby buildings, high terrain,parking garages or tunnels.The XR9 is typically installed in anaccessible location of the vehicle (dash area),consistent with line-of-sight operation of theremote control, and/or within easy reach of thedriver. For home use, situate the XR9close to your stereo receiving equipment.

Enjoying Your XM® XR9You can begin to enjoy XM® Satellite Radio as soon asthe XR9 and Kit installation are complete:

1. Set up your Audiovox XR9 using the installationinstructions included in your Home Kit, VehicleKit or Boom Box Kit, or with the help of a profes-sional installer.NOTE: Refer to Antenna Aiming (page 18) during

the installation procedure.2. When power is available to the unit, press the Power

( ) button to turn on the XR9.

3. The XM logo ( ) appears on the displayfollowed alternately by the XM preview channel. Ifthis is the first time using the XR9, the screen willalternately display the Preview channel screen anda number of messages, including: “Activate YourXM 1-800-XM RADIO”. If not, go to channel 1 usingthe CH Up/Down buttons.

4. To obtain the XM identification (ID) number, tune tochannel 0 or press the MENU button. The Main Menupage appears with the Radio ID option highlighted.Press the SELECT button and the 8-digit XM IDnumber will appear. Write the number here forfuture reference.

5. Activate your XM® radio service ---- it’s easy. Youhave one of two choices to activate your service:

(a) Visit the website at XMRadio.com and click onthe “Activate Radio” section. You will then needto follow some simple directions and provide XMwith some basic information in order to activateyour service.

XM XR9 ControlsThe Audiovox XM® XR9 Unit provides 10 control buttonsand 10 number keys.

Power Button:This button applies power to and removes power fromthe XM® XR9 as follows:

1. A momentary press of the power button turns onthe receiver, and is accompanied by a confirmationbeep tone. The XM logo/name ( ) initiallyappears on the LCD display for 3 seconds, followedby the Preview screen (if turned on for the first time),or by the tuning mode in effect when the unit waslast powered off.

2. A momentary press of the power buttonturns offthe receiver. While the unit powers down, theAudiovox logo appears for 2 seconds and theunit turns off.

Channel Up/Down Buttons and Select Button:The CH ∧/∨ buttons are the primary controls for navi-gating through the various lists and option menus avail-able on the unit. In the default mode, these buttons pro-vide sequential tuning through the available programchannels. The Up ( ∧ ) button, when pressed, tunes upone channel, while the Down ( ∨ ) button, when pressed,tunes down one channel. When in the list or menu mode,pressing the CH ∨ and ∧ scrolls down and up, respec-tively, through the various menus and lists. The currentselection from the list will be highlighted on the display.When the item is highlighted, press the SELECT buttonto enter the selection.

Select Button:In the default mode, when the SELECT button is pressedand held for at least 2 seconds, the channel listing ap-pears. During normal operation, the SELECT button isused to confirm and/or enter desired functions.

Category Buttons:The CAT ∧/∨ buttons allow the user to advance throughthe channel groups based on content category. By press-ing the Channel Up/Down buttons, the user can thenscroll up or down through the channels within that cat-

egory. Once a choice has been made, it can be enteredby pressing the SELECT button.

Memory Button (T SEL) Function:This feature allows the user to capture and store the cur-rent program data information (Channel Name & Num-ber/Artist & Song Title). You can store up to 30 Artist/SongTitle combinations. The XR9 also has the capability tosearch the current incoming XM signal, and thereby alertyou if it matches the Artist/Song title stored in XR9 memory.

Display Button:The DISPLAY button allows the user to choose one ofseveral ways of presenting the Artist, Song Title and dataservice information on the LCD screen.

Menu (FM) Button:The MENU button is used to access “Main Menu” optionswhich allows the user to make feature function adjust-ments to suit your own personal preferences. Upon enter-ing the main menu mode, use the Channel Up/Downbuttons to highlight the desired function and then pressthe SELECT button to enter. Pressing and holding theMENU button will enter FM Frequency setting mode whichwill allow you to quickly make frequency changes as re-quired.

Preset Button:Each momentary press of the PRESET button allows theuser to switch between 3 banks of Channel presets (10presets each A, B, and C, plus Direct (Dir) channel entry.When in any of the three preset banks, momentarily press-ing any of the number buttons will recall the stored chan-nel. In the Direct (Dir) mode, use the number buttons todirectly enter the desired channel number.

Keypad Buttons 0-9:These buttons are used to directly enter a desired chan-nel number. They are also used when entering and re-calling preset channel numbers into memory.

Basic OperationWith the unit properly installed, activated and connectedto your home or vehicle audio system, proceed as fol-lows:

1. Press the Power button; the XR9 turns on andthe XM logo appears for 3 seconds followed bythe default display for the channel and tuning modein effect prior to turnoff.

2. Press the Channel Up/Down buttons to select andplay the desired channel, or use the Category Up/

Channel Listing OptionsThis feature allows you to view what is playing on otherchannels without having to change the current channelyou are listening to. The content listing options are se-lected by using the DISPLAY button. When the defaultscreen is displayed on the LCD, pressing and holding

the SELECT button will display all the available channelnumbers and channel information. The first press willdisplay the channel name. The second press of theDISPLAY button will display all currently available art-ists. The third press of the DISPLAY button will displaysong titles.While viewing the Channel List, pressing the Displaybutton changes Channel List to Artist List to Song List.The available content listing now displays informationby the Artist Name.

Direct TuningChannels can also be directly accessed by pressing thePRESET button until Dir appears; then use the 0-9 num-ber keys to numerically enter the desired channel. Oncethe desired channel number has been entered, wait 3seconds until the channel automatically plays.

Setting/Using Channel Preset ButtonsThe unit contains 10 preset buttons. There are three banksof preset memory locations offering a total of 30 presets.These banks are designated A, B and C and can be se-lected using the PRESET button. The display in the upperleft corner changes to show the corresponding Presetbank. Each bank will store 10 user-preferred channels.

The DISPLAY button is also used during category tun-ing. Consecutively pressing the DISPLAY button whiletuning by category will display the Channel Name, ArtistName or Song Title within the selected category.While the preceding screens are displayed, pressingthe CH Up/Down buttons allow navigation through thelist. When the desired selection is highlighted, pressthe SELECT button and your selection will be played.

Display ButtonPressing the DISPLAY button from the Default displaytoggles between the artist name/song title screen, largeletter format, or artist name/song title with data serviceticker (sports, stock options, etc.) screen. When the let-ter size changes, the field will scroll. This feature isuseful when viewing the display at a distance.

Select the desired channel you wish to save into memoryby using the CH Up/Down buttons, the direct tuning methodor the category tuning method. With the desired channelplaying, press and hold any of the numbered keypad but-tons (0-9). A confirmation tone is heard, and a confirmingmessage (Channel Stored) is displayed. Continue thisprocedure for storing all desired channels. To retrieve apreset channel, momentarily press and release the num-ber button corresponding to the desired channel. A list ofthe preset channels can also be accessed through thecategory tuning method.

Memory Button (T SEL Function):This feature allows the user to capture and store thecurrent program data information (Artist & Song title)with up to 30 listings (30 Artist/Song Title combinations).The unit also has the capability to search the currentincoming XM signal and alert the user when a savedsong is being played.

1. While the XR9 is in any of the standard displaymodes, momentarily pressing and releas-ing the MEMORY button stores the current programdata information within the unit’s memory. Apop-up screen (Artist/Song Data Saved) appearsfor 1 second, confirming your selection.

2. By holding down the MEMORY button for 3 seconds, thestored memory information is displayed on the LCDscreen in list format. Use the Channel Up/Down buttonsto scroll through the 30 listings and press the SELECTbutton to view the information. This function allows you torecall information regarding the Artist/Song Title for yourown personal review. To return to the default tuning modepress and hold the MEMORY button for 3 seconds.

Momentarily pressing the SELECT button will exitthe current artist/song title information and returnto the memory list.

3. When the T SEL function is active, each time theXR9 is turned on, it automatically searchesthe incoming signal to determine if a match existsbetween the signal and the currently saved infor-mation stored in receiver memory. If one or morematches are found, an audible beep tone will beheard indicating that a match has been found. Thedisplay then reverts to the Song Found screenwhich displays the current matches. You can nowselect the Artist/Song that you wish to listen to.

a. If one or more matches are found, a display listappears, and allows you to scroll through the listof songs using the CH Up/Down buttons. Once asong is found, it can be selected by pressing theSELECT button, and the display will revert to ei-ther of the selected display modes.

b. If a selection is not chosen within 10 secondsafter the last action, the screen will revert to thepreviously selected display and tuning mode.

NOTE: Play of the current selection will con-tinue until a new selection is made.

4. If the MEMORY button is pressed to save a cur-rently-playing selection, and all of the memoryspaces are full, Memory Full will flash on the dis-play for 1 second.

To delete a selection from memory, press andhold the Memory button to display the list; thenhighlight the selection you wish to delete usingthe Channel Up/Down buttons. Once highlighted,press the SELECT button to choose the song tobe deleted. With the song and artist selectiondisplayed, press the MEMORY button. A pop-upscreen will appear (Memory Delete). HighlightYes and press the SELECT button to delete theselection.

To enter any of these modes, use the CH Up/Downbuttons to highlight the option you wish to adjustand press the SELECT button. Upon enteringeither the contrast or dimming control, a 10-segment horizontal bar graph is displayed withleft and right directional arrows.

If, while in the menu screen function, a button is notpressed within 10 seconds from the previously selectedfunction, the unit exits the menu screen function andreverts to the default screen display.

Wheneither settingis flat (Bass or Treble equalizer set-ting off) the indication will be at mid-range; any set-ting to the left (-) or right (+) indicates a respectivedecrease or increase in the Bass or Treble setting.

FM OptionsThe following adjustments are possible:NOTE: The internal wireless FM transmitter allows

you to play the XR9 audio through any stan-dard FM receiver, eliminating the need tohardwire connections.

FM On/ OffFrequency Setting

Frequency Setting:Upon entering this mode, any FM transmitter fre-quency can be chosen using the CH Up/Downbuttons for frequency selection. The FM frequencyrange from 88.1 to 107.9MHz is represented by ahorizontal graph; use the ChannelUp/Down buttons to select the desired frequency.

FM On/Off:Upon entering this mode, press the CH Up/Down buttons to toggle between the FM ONor FM OFF function/display selection. To selectand/or exit this function, press the SELECTbutton. (No button activity for 10 seconds willexit this function.)

Upon entering this mode, the user is prompted to entera four digit numerical code that is used to lock/unlockchannel access. Once the code has been entered, pressthe SELECT button; the channel list will be displayedwith the current channel in play highlighted. Lock/Unlock Default Code FunctionThe first time the lock/unlock function is accessed, theuser must enter the default lock code. The default lockcode is “0000”. This code can be maintained orchanged. To change the default lock code perform thefollowing procedure:

1. Press the MENU button to access the MainMenu.

2. Use the Channel Up/Down buttons to highlightthe Lock Option and press the SELECT but-ton.

3. Use the Channel Up/Down buttons to highlightEdit Code and press the SELECT button.

Antenna Aiming (Home Installation)Upon entering this mode, two 7-segment vertical bargraphs are displayed representing terrestrial (tower) andsatellite transmitters. Thesignal strength is displayedby the respective graphsegments. Position theantenna to optimize eitherthe satellite or terrestrial signal.

Channel Add/SkipUpon entering this mode, a channel list is displayed with thecurrent channel in play highlighted. Use the Channel Up/Downbuttons to navigate the list and highlight the channel to beadjusted.

Set Alarm:When this menu option is highlighted and selected,you will be able to set the unit to turn on at a specifictime. The last selected channel prior to shutdownwill be present when the Alarm feature is activated.Additionally, a series of beep tones will be heard.

Press any button on the front panel to silence thealarm tones. The alarm will trigger again at the settime unless the Alarm Off feature is selected underthe Set Alarm function.

Set Alarm (Default-Off)Use the Channel Up/Down buttons to togglebetween Alarm On or Alarm Off and press the

SELECT Button for desired alarm status. Whenthe alarm is on, the time will be displayed onthe default screen in reverse image.
