Gather a variety of found objectssuch as paper cups, cardboardand foam pieces. Tape string to arolling pin.

Draw marker on the plastic surfaceusing the flat side of the marker.

Spray the marker lightly with a smallamount of water.

Press an object into the wet ink topick up as much ink as you can.

Make a print on the paper bypressing the inked object onto itand applying pressure, or rollingthe object across the surface.

Turn the paper into a small book.Begin by folding the paper in halftwice in both directions to make 16boxes.

Place the paper print side down.Draw dots at the intersection of theboxes as shown. Cut along thefolds and stop at each dot.

Place the paper with the printedside facing up. Begin at one endand make accordion folds to theend of the row.

When you get to the end of eachrow, fold paper away from you andcontinue with the accordion folds.

Fold the two end papers out. Thesewill make the cover of the book.

Gently fold the 2 end papers togetherand make two small cuts at eachend as shown.

Fold the thin strip of paper in half.Slip it into the bottom opening andout the top opening on each side ofthe covers.

Put a small amount of glue stick onthe inside of the strip to keep it fromslipping out.

Add a construction paper cover ifyou like. Use glitter glue to decorate it.Tuck the ends of the strips of paperinto each side of the book to close it.

YOU WILL NEED

Draw a semi-circle the full width ofa piece of bristol board and cut itout.

Use shape tracers and crayons tomake a design all over the bristolboard. Use geometric and organicshapes. Create patterns.

Use watercolours to paint over thewhole bristol board. Use severalcolours and let them mix together.

Fold the bristol board into a cone.Measure it so it fits your head.Staple the cone together.

Use markers to scribble lots ofcoloured lines all over a piece oftissue paper.

Lightly spray the tissue paper withwater.

When the tissue paper is dry softlycrunch it into a long strip.

Staple the tissue paper to the baseof the cone

Decorate the cone with glitter glueand other things.

Gather a variety of tools for creatingtexture and joining the modelingclay.

BUILDING BLOCKS – BALLBegin by practising how to makesome basic forms. Make a roughball with your fingers.

Roll it around and around between the palms of your hands.

Make it into a smooth, round ball. BUILDING BLOCKS – COILSpread your fingers and apply light,even pressure as you roll the mod-eling clay across the surface of theplacemat.

Make coils in different lengths andthicknesses.

BUILDING BLOCKS – CYLINDERRoll out a short, thick coil. Tap theends onto the placemat to makethem flat and smooth.

USE THE BUILDING BLOCKS To make a standing animal (dog)roll out a short thick coil for the bodyand 4 short small coils for the legs.

Press the modeling clay piecesfirmly to each other. Use a stick toblend the joint to make it stronger.

Roll a ball for the head. Join it firmlyto the body.

Make a short cylinder for a snout.Attach it to the ball.

Use a stick to cut through the middleof the snout.

Open the mouth and round theedges. Add a nose (ball) and atongue (small flattened coil).

Add texture and other details tomake your animal unique.

Make slip. Begin by placing severallumps of clay into a container andadding a small amount of water.

Mix the clay and water together. If itis too watery add more clay andcontinue to squeeze the clay throughyour fingers until it dissolves.

Flatten a small ball of clay with yourfingers and the palm of your hand.

Use a rolling pin or piece of dowelto roll it into a slab about 1.5 cmthick.

Use the pin tool to scratch crosshatched lines into the clay whereyou want to join another piece ofclay. This is called scoring the clay.

Paint slip on top of the score lines.This is called 'score and slip'technique.

Place a small ball of clay into thegarlic press and squeeze it out.

Place it on top of the scored andslipped spot and gently blend theedges into the slab to make asmooth join.

Roll a long thin coil of clay. As youroll the clay spread your fingers andapply gentle, even pressure toslowly stretch the clay.

Score and slip the spot where youwill join the coil to the slab. Placethe coil on the prepared spot.

Use the back of your fingernail tojoin the edges to the slab. Smooththe clay with your finger

Use the gouging tool to scrapeaway clay from the slab. Continueadding and removing clay to createat least 3 levels.

Experiment with ways to makedifferent textures. Remember toscore and slip before adding anypieces of clay.

YOU WILL NEED

Tape the paper to a plastic place-mat. Draw the background scenegetting inspiration from researchphotos.

Block in key details in pencil. Drawan outline with marker. Paint intothe marker with water. Draw somemarker onto a plastic lid.

Paint into the marker with water toliquify it. Colour large areas of yourscene using this marker ink. Useboth techniques to complete yourscene.

Paint over dry areas. Painting purpleover the other colours helps createthe feeling of shadows and depth.

Set the background picture aside.Refer to your research photo as youdraw your animal. Use the markertechnique to colour the animaldrawing.

Photocopy (or draw) and colour theanimal in two smaller sizes, forexample, one at 75% and anotherat 50% of original size.

Gently remove the tape from thebackground drawing. Cut out all 3animal drawings.

Once you are happy with thearrangement begin to glue theanimals down. Glue the smallestone first.

Position it and lightly press it intoplace.

Glue some small pieces of foamcore board onto the back of thelargest animal. These will raise theshape and make the wholecomposition feel more 3-D.

Put glue on each piece of foam coreboard. Press the animal shape onto thepicture. Gently turn it over and pressthe back of the paper to fix the largeanimal in place.

Add some shadows under theanimals to add to the feeling ofdepth.

EXPLORING SPACE

Figure out where you want to placethe animals. The smallest shouldbe highest and the largest shouldbe lowest on the picture plane.

Place a spare piece of paper overthe animal and rub it gently. Thepaper keeps the animal shapefrom tearing or moving while youpress it onto the page.

YOU WILL NEED

Use the primary, secondary and tertiarycoloured oil pastels to colour the innershapes of the wheel.

Mix tempera paint to colour theouter shapes of the wheel. Take avery small amount of two primarycolours to start.

Paint a primary colour in two of thelarge circles. Mix the secondary andtertiary colours to match the oilpastel colours between the twoprimary colours you painted.

Use a second plastic lid for the restof your colours. Make sure you getclean water and wash your brushbefore you start.

Choose a theme and find pictures inmagazines to match the colours ofyour wheel. Fill the inside spacewith colours.

Cut out the spinner at the bottom ofthe template. Attach it with a paperfastener. Use it to find complementarycolours.

YOU WILL NEED

Draw a fat snake the length of thepaper.

Divide the snake into about 9evenly spaced sections. This will beyour value scale.

Choose a primary colour and whiteto work with. Place a small amountof paint on the palette.

Paint the tip of the snake white.Then mix the primary colour into thewhite to make the palest tint.

Gradually add more colour to thetint you just mixed to make the nextsection slightly darker.

Continue painting the sections ofthe scale. End with the primarycolour unmixed.

Use a black marker to decorate thesnake with interesting line patterns.Make up your own patterns or trysome zentangles.

Add some glitter glue and otherembellishments to complete thesnake. Use this artwork for thecover of a book.

Stack papers with the snake on top.Place a popsicle stick at the left endand mark 2 dots on the inside edgeabout 2 cm down from each end ofthe stick.

Paper clip all the pages together tohold them in place. Use a paperpunch to make holes at the dots.

Poke an elastic band from the backto the front through one hole.

Place the popsicle stick through theloop of the elastic band on the front.

Draw a few sketches of what youwould like to create.

Paint the recycled bottle lids at thepainting centre. Set the lids aside todry.

Choose colours that will look goodwith your design. Use watercoloursto paint the canvas.

Use Washable glue to fasten thelids onto the canvas. Build up layersof lids and colours.
