Arkansas Leads Nation in AIC CertificationsArkansas coaches are increasingly prepared and equipped. Of the nearly 4,500 coaches in Arkansas, over half of them hold Accredited Interscholastic Coach (AIC) Certification. The Arkansas Activities As-sociation (AAA) believes that as coaches become more knowledge-able about the profession of coaching, they are able to better serve the student, the school and the community.

Nick Lasker, AAA Associate Executive Director, expressed his excite-ment about the program, saying he hopes other states will jump on board so that coaches and students can both reach their maximum potentials.

“AIC Certification is built from the coursework the NFHS recommends for all coaches,” explained Dan Schuster, Director of Coach Education at the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). “Arkansas does a great job educating coaches and it is no surprise it has the most AICs in the country. The Arkansas Activities Association should be commended for its leadership in educating coaches.”

AIC Certification is required in Arkansas for all coaches who do not have a coaching endorsement on their teaching license. This require-ment has been in effect since 2012, and the AAA has received posi-tive endorsements about the program from both athletic directors and coaches. There are currently 13,500 AIC certified coaches, and almost 20 percent of them coach in Arkansas. That certainly merits a well-deserved round of applause.

Important Course “Freeze” Clarification The NFHS Office and NFHS Help Desk have received calls and emails pertaining to courses freezing after the first video of a course, primarily the Concussion course. It is not a “course freeze,” but simply the coach viewing the course teaser, which is a short video excerpt from the course. Please remember, all NFHS courses are not simply videos, but online courses that must be ordered. Please share the link to the NFHSLearn.com Tutorials, which can be found below. The NFHS will make some subtle changes to help deter this issue.

New Tutorials There are revised tutorials on YouTube to help guide users through the new www.nfhslearn.com website. They include topics ranging from registering and ordering courses to coaching requirements and monitoring licenses. The direct link to these tutorials is https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_9AAnW91zSkqPxpy2bOSHEaCf5tKNwHm.

Course Completions Report from the Old System As many of you are aware, running reports in the new system can only pull from available data since converting to the system on July 7. Many states ran and kept their own reports in the old system re-

garding course completions. The NFHS has a complete set of reports for any state that would like that data. Contact Matt Rohlf at [email protected] to request course completions reports for your state.

NIAAA Coach Education Committee The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Coach Education Committee exists to promote coach education among interscholastic activities. This committee distributes a newsletter, which includes information on coach education as well as topics such as national coach certification and current stories highlighting interscholastic sports. The NFHS Learning Center is often highlighted in this newsletter. For more information about the NIAAA or receiving the NIAAA Coach Education Committee newslet-ter please contact Bobby Guthrie ([email protected]) or Bruce Brown ([email protected]).

National Coaching Conference The 2015 National Coaching Conference will be held June 10-12 in Morgantown, West Virginia. The theme of the conference is “Physical Literacy: The Launching Pad for Lifetime Athletic Development and Performance.” SHAPE America is currently accepting proposals from individuals interested in presenting at the conference. Interested parties may submit a proposal for one of three unique tracks; the coach track, the coach education/developer track or the sport scien-tist track. Proposals are due December 5, 2014. For more information on submitting a proposal and/or attending the conference, visit the 2015 National Coaching Conference webpage on www.shapeam-erica.org. Registration for the conference begins January 16, 2015.

Social Media: For more information on coach education, remember to follow the NFHS on Twitter @NFHS_org or like the NFHS on Facebook (NFHS Coach Education). You can also find the NFHS on LinkedIn.

2014 National Athletic Directors Conference National Harbor, Maryland, will be the host site for the 2014 Athletic Administrators Conference. There will once again be a NFHS Coach Education booth in the exhibit hall. If you are going to the confer-ence, we invite you to visit the booth.

The Arkansas Ac-tivities Association released the names of this year’s Wendy’s Player of the Year awards for tennis,

volleyball, cross country and dance. The golf selections were released in the November Bulletin.

Emily Metcalf of Valley View is the Wendy’s Girls Tennis Play-er of the Year, while Jack Henry Hill and Spencer Kauffman of Hot Springs Lakeside (doubles pair) is the Boys Tennis Player of the Year. Anna LeDuc of Bentonville is the Volley-ball Player of the Year. Elise Reina of Springdale Har-Ber is the Girls Cross Country Player of the Year, while T.J. Sugg of Springdale Har-Ber is the Boys Cross Country Player of the Year. Madison Petty of Greene County Tech is the Dance Player of the Year.

This is the second year for the Wendy’s Player of the Year Awards. A total of 23 athletes will be selected from the sports of golf, tennis, volleyball, cross country, dance, cheer, football, swimming, wrestling, bowling, basketball, softball, baseball, soccer and track. Each winner will receive a plaque and a medallion from Wendy’s. The awards will be presented at Wendy’s Day of Champions luncheon at the Arkansas Activities Association office on Monday, June 1, 2015.

Coaches and school administrators are eligible to make nominations for these awards throughout the school year.

Metcalf, a senior, is a two-time Overall Singles champion and a four-time state champion, winning the first three in Class 4A and this year out of Class 5A.

The team of Henry Hill-Kauffman won the Overall Doubles championships this year. They were the Overall runner-ups in 2013. Henry Hill and Kauffman are sophomores who also won back-to-back Class 5A state doubles championships in 2013 and 2014.

LeDuc, a senior, led Bentonville to the Class 7A state cham-pionship in volleyball and was the tournament’s most valuable player. She served as team captain and was named the team MVP. She is also nominated for the Under Armor All-American team.

Reina, a junior, won the same award last school year. This year she successfully defended her Class 7A West Confer-ence title and the Class 7A State championship. She posted a 19:11.3 at the state meet. Reina finished third as a fresh-man in the 7A state meet.

This was Sugg’s first year to run cross country, and he dominated the competition. Sugg, a junior, posted a 15:17.8 for the second fastest time ever at the Oaklawn Park (Hot Springs) track. He also won the Crimson Division of the Rim-rock Classic in Kansas, the open division of the Southlake Carrol Invitational in Dallas and the Lake Hamilton Invita-tional.

Petty, a senior, led her team to first place finishes in both kick and pom at the Benton Invitational and as well as the Overall winner in kick and pom at the Benton Invitational. Petty guided her school to the Class 5A state runner-up position for the second straight year.
