Cave City’s Snow Wins 2014-2015 Interscholastic Star Title

Arkansas Activities Association3920 Richards Rd.North Little Rock, Ar 72117501-955-2500 www.ahsaa.org

LITTLE ROCK – Shanae Snow, a junior at Cave City High School, was named Arkansas’ Interscholastic Star for the 2014-2015 school year. Snow received the award on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, during a luncheon at the Holiday Inn Presidential in Little Rock.

Snow has consistently involved herself in various high school activities. Since her freshman year, Snow has been involved in Key Club, the Quiz Bowl, EAST Club, Skills USA, volleyball, basketball, softball and trap shooting.

As a Key Club member she helped to organize food drives, make bags for the home-less, send cards and flowers to nursing homes, sell dolls for children in the hospital and volunteer at Special Olympic events. East (Environmental and Spatial Technology) became her access pass to great resources. Last year she was the leader of a project that helped provide resources for orphans in Haiti. That project has touched her heart and inspired her to a possible future as a missionary.

Snow is secretary of the Future Business Leaders of America, vice president of CAD (Cavemen Against Drugs), public relations for the Key Club, an officer of Skills USA and a member of the Beta Club. She is also involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a member of the Spanish Club, Junior Class vice president and a teacher’s aide.

Snow developed the BeYou-tiful Girls seminar for girls ages 13-15 where guest speak-ers and counselors spoke to young girls about self esteem, peer pressure and making good life decisions. She also worked with Sharp County Tobacco Coalition to develop an anti-tobacco campaign for the county.

Snow received a $1,000 scholarship.

Adam Alexander of Hazen was named runner-up and received a $500 scholarship.

The other finalists who each received a $300 scholarship were Carly Page of Fayette-ville, lane Callahan of Southside Batesville and Jaelyn Cooper of Arkansas Baptist.

The Interscholastic Star program is co-sponsored by the Arkansas Activities Associa-tion and State Farm Insurance Companies. In addition to the scholarship, all five final-ists received a plaque from State Farm Insurance. State Farm Insurance’s Stan Walton of Hot Springs presented the awards.

The Interscholastic Star program is designed to recognize and reward individu-als whose efforts may or may not have been previously noticed. Such recognition includes highlighting the values found in school activities programs and their far-reaching effects on the lives of the participants.

Each Arkansas high school has at least one student whose attitudes and actions make the school a better place. These young people contribute to their school and com-munity by exemplifying what are called the Three A’s.

*Active Involvement in school activities and community service.*Adaptability to meet challenging situations with courage, perseverance and com-mitment.*Attitude of cooperation, dependability and application of interpersonal skills.

A statewide screening committee selected the five finalists. The selection committee interviewed each of the five finalists prior to the luncheon.

The members of this year’s panel were Susan Standridge of Conway, Esther Hethering-ton of Vilonia, Kim Lacy of Vilonia and Ronnie Higgins of Jacksonville.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The National Federation of State High Schoo As-sociation (NFHS) Track and Field Rules Committee recommended and the Board of Directors approved Rule 7-5-24, which provides that the pole vault planting box may contain planting box padding.“Such padding, if used, shall meet the applicable ASTM Specification Standards [designated F2949-12], and can be incorporated into the design of the planting box or can be a padding addition to an existing planting box.” Rule 7-5-24 shall be implemented in the 2014-15 NFHS Track and Field rules. The padding meeting the ASTM Specification Standard may currently be used by schools and shall be required for the start of the 2014-15 track and field season. This encompasses both indoor and outdoor competition. The implementation date was established based on product availability.Rule 7-5-24 was adopted with the concern for risk minimization in the pole vault event. As stated by the NCAA in its memorandum about adoption of the standard: “There is substantial evidence demonstrat-

ing that a number of pole vault injuries occur when student-athletes land in or around the vault box. The box collar padding rule adopted by the NCAA was designed to mitigate such injuries by providing as much padding around fixed and solid objects as possible to absorb the potential impact from a student-athlete.”Throughout consideration of the requirement in the rule, it was deter-mined that plant box padding extending into the plant box served to minimize the risk of injury more so than other padding without such design. ASTM designation 2949-12 for pole vault planting box pad-ding adequately addresses the NFHS concerns to minimize the risk of injury to pole vaulters in the planting box area. The padding under ASTM Specification Standards is considered as that which extends down the inner sidewall of the pole vault planting box. The specifics regarding the nature, purpose, dimensions and need for padding inside the box through wings are provided within the standard itself. This is consistent with the rationale for adoption of the rule to mini-mize the risk of injury.

Finish in Backstroke Event Highlights 2014-15Swimming and Diving Rules Changes

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – – A major change in the finish of the backstroke event will occur next year in high school swim-ming and diving.

Effective with the 2014-15 season, any part of a swimmer’s body must be on or above the water at the finish of the back-stroke event. Previously, a swimmer in the backstroke could submerge on the turn and/or finish.

This revision in Rule 8-2-1e was one of eight rules changes rec-ommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Swimming and Diving Rules Committee during its March 30-April 1 meeting in Indianapolis. These recommendations were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Three changes were approved in Rule 9 pertaining to diving. First, Rule 9-2-2 now allows an option for reseeding divers going into finals in championship meets. Diving finalists may now be seeded from lowest to highest based on their indi-vidual scores through the semifinals. Previously, the diving order used at the beginning of the meet was maintained throughout the competition. The new option for diving finals is decided by the meet director prior to the beginning of the meet.

The committee also adjusted the scale for judges to score div-ers by revising five of the seven categories. The new scoring, which is consistent with the NCAA, USA Diving and FINA, is as follows:

• Excellent – 10 • Very Good – 8.5 to 9.5• Good – 7 to 8 • Satisfactory – 5 to 6.5• Deficient – 2.5 to 4.5• Unsatisfactory – 0.5 to 2 • Failed – 0

The final diving revision (Rule 9-2-1) seeks to minimize risk of injury by permitting practice dives during specified warm-up times prior to each diving session. Divers are allowed at least two practice approaches – with or without water entry – prior to the start of the diving competition. This allows divers an op-portunity to warm up after a break in competition.

The committee made additions to Rule 3-6 relating to the penalties for unsporting conduct during a swimming and div-ing meet. Unsporting conduct results in disqualification from the meet, including previous events in which a competitor qualified for the finals.

New Rule 3-6-3 states that no team personnel or competitor should display unacceptable conduct, including not follow-ing the official’s directions or using profanity. The penalty is disqualification from the event.

Rule 3-6-2 now deals strictly with spectator conduct and al-lows the referee to suspend the meet until the meet manage-ment resolves the situation. Previously, spectator penalties were included with the penalties for athletes.

Another change dealing with risk minimization was Rule 8-1-5, which states that swimmers no longer may step off the starting platform when the referee says “Stand up.” Referees and starters should direct swimmers to step down only when unusual circumstances occur.

Following are other changes approved by the rules commit-tee:

• Rule 3-3-4: Adhesives are not allowed for swimmers or divers.• Rule 4-3-1Note: The sounding device shall not be a pistol or closed barreled starter’s pistol.

Letter to the DirectorDear Lance:

I wanted to let you know that something very special happened at the 3A District Baseball Tournament held at Bald Knob field (May 1, 2014) yesterday. I was helping Coach Russell Johnson with the baseball team at Barton and we had a situation come up where we only had nine players. One of those players was a junior named Kaleb Faulkner. He had a leg amputated after a terrible auto accident following the homecoming football game last fall. I called and talked to Dr. Kieth Williams, Superintendent at Bald Knob and Mr. Curtis Spann, Superintendent at Rose Bud. They were both very supportive of the idea. Since Kaleb had just been cleared by his doctor, I wanted everyone to know how much determination he had to play. Mr. Tyrel Pace, athletic director at Bald Knob, was more than happy to make the following announcement:

Athletic Director of Bald Knob, Tyrel Pace“Kaleb Faulkner will be starting at second base for the Barton Bears. Kaleb was involved in a terrible car accident last fall after the home-coming football game at Barton. The doctor had to amputate his leg below the knee. Kaleb received his prosthesis for his leg prior to baseball season starting this season. The doctor gave Kaleb clear-ance to play baseball just this week. Let’s give Kaleb a great hand for his accomplishment in getting back on the field.”

Everyone at the field gave Kaleb a standing ovation. It was a magical

moment. During the game everyone gave him an ovation each time he came to bat. Kaleb’s first time up he fouled off several pitches and walked and was allowed a pinch runner. The second time up Kaleb fouled off a couple of pitches and got a base hit to right field driving in a run. His determination was unbelievable in his efforts to get to first base. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. I had to put my sun glasses back on too!

After the game, which we lost to Rose Bud 16-6, I told their coach and our team that no matter what the outcome of the game was, everyone won. There were no losers on the field or in the stands. We gathered at the pitcher’s mound for prayer. After the prayer, Rose Bud coach Scott Moore had his players sign a baseball and present-ed it to Kaleb. They all congratulated Kaleb on his accomplishment. Everybody was a class act. It made me so proud to just be there!

I wanted you to know how much I appreciated the superintendents, athletic director, coaches, players and fans for that magical moment that meant so much to a young man and his family.

Sincerely,

Tom Wilson, SuperintendentBarton-Lexa School District.
