Xiria is the name of a new generation of ring main unitsfrom Eaton Holec. They are characterised by their highlevel of operational safety and are suitable forapplications up to 12 kV, meeting the requirements ofIEC and ENATS 41-36. Xiria units are also very compact.Xiria units can be supplied in three- or four-panelversions. Both the primary part of the unit and themechanisms are housed in a fully enclosed housingwhich protects the system against environmentalinfluences. There is a choice of two basic panelversions in our product range:• A vacuum load break switch for ring cable

connections.• A vacuum circuit-breaker for protecting transformers

and cable connections.Both versions can be supplied in a unit in any desiredcombination and order.

Xiria is an extremely well designed and modern system.For example, when developing the system weintentionally opted for protection in the form of a circuit-breaker combined with an electronic relay. This is amodern, safe and flexible alternative to fuse protection.

In addition it also makes Xiria veryeasy to use in an automateddistribution network. These specificfeatures make Xiria an easy-to-usesystem that responds perfectly tochanging electricity distributionrequirements, both now and in thefuture.

Developments in electricity distributionElectrical energy has become an indispensable part ofmodern society. Having a reliable, continuous supply ofenergy is becoming more and more important everyday. From the point of view of energy companies andindustry, this means that the distribution network has tomeet ever more stringent demands. It goes withoutsaying that safety and operational reliability play a major role.As a result of the liberalisation of the energy market andthe effect that this is having on the market, electricity isbecoming an increasingly commercial product, with allthat that entails. So when a distribution network is set

been designed with a minimum number of parts, and is specifically intendedfor switching after a long period of inactivity – precisely the way it happens inpractice. What is more, the mechanism does not use any lubricants, whichalso benefits its operational safety. As it is maintenance-free, Xiriasignificantly cuts inspection and maintenance costs without adverselyaffecting the operational safety of your distribution network. Intrinsically safeWhen carrying out operational actions and work on thecables, it is vital to have unambiguous status indications.When it comes to the safety of the operating personnel,Eaton Holec leaves nothing to chance. That is why Xiria is

fitted with inspection windows in the front which makes the isolatingdistance between the cable and the busbar system and the ON-OFF positionof the vacuum interrupters directly visible. A visible, short-circuit proofearthing can take place via the load break switch or circuit-breaker. Xiria is designed with a fully enclosed metal housing combined with single-phase insulation of all primary live parts. This reduces the risk of an internalfault to an absolute minimum, thus providing a high degree of safety andavailability. The housing is internal arc proof, tested by KEMA, and meets therequirements for use in transformer stations according to ENATS 41-36 fig. 4.This design offers additional protection for operating personnel.

The maintenance-free Xiria system is Eaton Holec’s response to this.Sustainability and environmental friendliness arebecoming more and more important in the choice ofswitch materials. Eaton Holec has taken this criterionas a starting point for the design of its new generationof ring main units - both in terms of production andduring the entire service life of the unit, including thereuse of the materials used.Based on these developments, Eaton Holec haslaunched Xiria, a system that responds to present andfuture developments in the liberalised energy market.

Clean and greenXiria is made exclusively of environmentally-friendlymaterials. The insulation medium is clean, dry air and theswitching medium is vacuum. Thus Xiria responds to thedemand for sustainability in energy distribution. The unit is

easy to dismantle at the end of its service life as the materials used areclearly labelled and can be reused. This facilitates recycling and avoidsexcessive costs and environmental taxes when the unit is decommissioned.

CompactXiria is one of the smallest ring main units of its kind. Thishigh degree of compactness is a direct result of thecombination of technologies used by Eaton Holec – electricalfield control, solid insulation and the use of extremely

compact vacuum interrupters. This compactness offers direct financialbenefits in new buildings and when refurbishing existing transformer stationsbecause of the minimal floor area required.

Remote controlXiria is completely ready for use in fully remote controllednetworks. There are various options available for the system,depending on the level of remote signalling and remotecontrol required. These options are modular, so they can be

quickly and easily added in the future. In this way Xiria anticipates futuredevelopments in automation and operational control, so you can be sure thatyou will not be left with control, display and communication standards thatare too specific or possibly even obsolete.
