Season Review

2013 NCAA Championships, June 5-8, Historic Hayward Field

2011 RecapJordan Hasay’s runner-up showing and Luke Puskedra’s fourth straight All-America award at the NCAA Championships highlighted the 2011 cross country season for the Oregon men’s and women’s teams. Ha-say’s season also included a win at the NCAA West Regional Championships and a third-place showing at the inaugural Pac-12 Championships.

The woman also received outstanding performances from seniors Claire Michel and Bronwyn Crossman, juniors Sarah Penney, Becca Friday and Anne Kesselring, sophomore Lanie Thompson and freshman Molly Grabill.

Puskedra fi nished his career with by becoming just the third Duck to win four cross country All-America honors, joining Steve Prefontaine and Terry Williams. He also became just the fourth Duck to post three top-10 fi nishes at the NCAA Championships, joining Prefontaine, Alberto Salazar and Galen Rupp.

The men also received solid contributions from seniors Chris Kwiatkowski and Travis Stanford, junior Bryce Bur-gess, sophomores Ben DeJarnette and Parker Stinson and freshmen Jeramy Elkaim, Boru Guyota, Matt Jablonski, Ryan Pickering and Cole Watson.

Bill Dellinger Invitational

Sarah Penney posted her best fi nish as a Duck to lead the Women of Oregon to victory, while Parker Stinson paced the men’s team at the sixth annual Bill Dellinger Invitational.

Penney led an imposing 3-4-5-6 fi nish for the Ducks as No. 17 Oregon captured the women’s team title with 26 points. Wisconsin was second with 73 points, followed by Portland (95) and Oregon State ( 118).

Penney covered the 5,000-meter course at the Springfi eld Country Club in 16:46.97 to lead the Ducks. Becca Friday was fourth in 16:49.00, Lanie Thompson was fi fth in 16:51.60, Claire Michel took sixth in 16:51.97 and Megan Patrignelli was eighth in 16:57.60 to round out the scoring for the Ducks.

Hannah Kisler of Idaho came from deep in the fi eld and took the lead with less than 50 meters remaining to win the individual title in 16:45.71. Aliphine Tuliamuk of Wichita State appeared to be in control entering the fi nal turn when Kisler came from out of nowhere and passed several runners over the last 200 meters before passing Tuliamuk with a fi nal kick down the homestretch.

In the men’s race, No. 2 Wisconsin established itself in the lead pack from the outset and impressed by plac-ing fi ve runners in the top seven. The Badgers won with 24 points, with No. 8 Oregon second with 59 points, followed by Southern Utah (104), Idaho (110) and UC Riverside (113).

Parker Stinson was the fi rst Duck to cross the fi nish line as he completed the 8,000-meter course in 23:23.85. Brian Shrader was 10th in 23:57.13. The Ducks also counted a 15th-place fi nish from Ryan Pickering (24:07.48) and a 16th-place showing from Bryce Burgess (24:10.69). Cole Watson wrapped up Oregon’s scoring in his cross country debut, fi nishing 20th in 24:18.88.

Cameron Levens of Southern Utah went to the front of the men’s race on the fi rst lap and never relinquished it, though he never quite shook the Wisconsin pack and UC Riverside’s Chad Hall. Levens reached the fi nish line in 23:10.51 for an eight-second victory.

Pac-12 Championships

Luke Puskedra and a bevy of freshmen led the No. 23 Oregon men’s cross country team to a third-place fi nish at the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships, run at Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfi eld Park, Ariz. Jordan Hasay paced the Duck women with her third-place individual fi nish.

Puskedra sparked the men with his fi fth-place fi nish, while Parker Stinson backed him with a seventh-place show-ing. After that, the next fi ve Ducks to cross the fi nish line were freshmen. Puskedra ran with the lead pack the majority of the race and covered the 8,000-meter course in 22:58.

It was the fourth time that Puskedra has placed in the top fi ve at the conference meet, and was his seventh straight top-10 fi nish dating back to the beginning of last season. Stinson was strong with his seventh-place run in 23:28. A trio of freshmen then locked up the Ducks’ third-place fi nish. Jeramy Elkaim came across the line in 20th in 23:51, followed by Lukas Verzbicas in 23rd (23:55) and Ryan Pickering in 39th (24:29).

Conference newcomer Colorado pulled a mild upset to take the inaugural Pac-12 men’s crown. The sixth-ranked Buffalos scored 46 points, followed by No. 4 Stanford with 54 and No. 23 Oregon at 96.

Individually, Arizona freshman Lawi Lalang led nearly the entire race and won going away in 22:37. Chris Der-rick of Stanford was the runner-up in 22:45, followed by Colorado’s Richard Medina (22:54), Stanford’s Jake Riley (22:55) and Puskedra.

Colorado made it a sweep in its fi rst Pac-12 competition, with the 16th-ranked Buffalos taking the women’s title with 50 points. No. 2 Washington held off No. 8 Stanford for second place, scoring 71 points to the Cardinal’s 73. No. 11 Oregon was next with 87 points.

The women’s 6,000 meter individual race was extremely entertaining. Stanford’s Kathy Kroeger went to the lead at the opening gun, with Hasay falling in right behind along with Washington’s Katie Flood. They led a large pack through the fi rst third of the race as no one moved to break from the fi eld.

Season ReviewHasay, the defending Pac-10 champion, pulled to the front at the 10:00 mark as Kroeger and Flood broke with her and the three opened up a three-second lead on the trailing pack with 2,000 meters left. The trio then battled to the end, with Flood pulling away taking the title in 19:31 over. Kroeger was second in 19:40 and Hasay placed third in 19:49.

Seniors Claire Michel and Bronwyn Crossman stepped up in their fi nal league championships. Michel, was 15th in 20:26, while Crossman took 17th in 20:28.

The Ducks also counted a 22nd-place fi nish from Lanie Thompson (20:40) and a 32nd-place showing from Molly Grabill (20:59).

NCAA West Regional

Jordan Hasay used a kick down the fi nal hill to win the NCAA West Regional women’s cross country title for the second year in a row at Stanford Golf Course. Luke Puskedra fi nished sixth in the men’s race. In the team stand-ings, the women fi nished fourth in an excellent fi eld, while the men tied for sixth.

Hasay fought off a strong challenge from Loyola Marymount’s Tara Erdmann and pulled away over the fi nal 1,000 meters to win in 19:44. Erdmann took the race out fast and opened up a gap on the fi eld, though Hasay never let the LMU runner get too far out of touch.

Hasay, a junior from Arroyo Grande, Calif., pulled even midway through the 6,000-meter race and then kicked hard down the course’s fi nal hill to pull away from Erdmann. Deborah Maier of California took second in 19:51 and Erdmann dropped to third in 19:53.

Hasay led four Ducks in the top 23 as No. 11 Oregon claimed fourth place with 120 points. No. 6 Washington won the race with 50 points, while No. 16 Arizona was second with 98 points. No. 8 Stanford was third with 111 points, followed by the Ducks, No. 26 California (141) and No. 27 San Francisco (169).

Seniors Bronwyn Crossman and Claire Michel were solid in their fi nal Regional appearances. Crossman fi nished 15th in 20:43, with Michel taking 21st in 20:51. Lanie Thompson was 23rd in 23:53 and Molly Grabill took 60th in 21:41 to round out the scoring for the Ducks.

Hasay became just the second Duck to win the Regional meet twice and the fi rst to do it in consecutive years. Penny Graves was the West individual champion in 1986 and 1988.

Puskedra extended a couple of remarkable streaks. The race marked his eighth-straight top-10 fi nish dating back to the 2010 season. It was also his third straight sixth-place showing at the Regional meet. The senior from Ogden, Utah, covered the 10,000 meter course in 29:01.

Other highlights for the men included sophomore Parker Stinson’s 16th-place run in 29:49 and freshman Jeramy Elkaim taking 36th in 39:18 in his fi rst NCAA competition.

No. 6 Stanford won the men’s race with 50 points, edging No. 8 Portland. The Pilots scored 53. Cal Poly was next with 122 points, followed by Washington State (141) and California (173). No. 17 Oregon and No. 21 UCLA tied for sixth with 175 points. Pac-12 individual champion Lawi Lalang of Arizona claimed his fi rst NCAA West crown. The freshman won in 28:34.

NCAA Championships

Jordan Hasay matched the best fi nish by a Duck in school history to lead the Women of Oregon to their fi rst top-fi ve fi nish in three years at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Senior Luke Puskedra also impressed by earning his fourth straight All-America award for his sixth-place individual fi nish in the men’s race.

Hasay and Villanova senior Sheila Reid waged another entertaining round of their running duels. The two were neck-and-neck the entire race before Reid had just enough at the end to clip Hasay by sixth-tenths of a sec-ond. Reid covered the 6,000 meter Lavern Gibson Championship Course in 19:41.2, with Hasay right behind at 19:41.8 in one of the closest fi nishes in NCAA history.

Hasay’s runner-up showing matched the best fi nish by a Duck woman in school history. Leann Warren also took second in 1981.

The Ducks also used well-executed pack running from Claire Michel, Bronwyn Crossman and Lanie Thompson to take fi fth place overall with 281 points, one point better than Vanderbilt. Georgetown won the women’s race with 162 points, followed by Washington at 170, Villanova at 181 and Florida State at 189.

It was Oregon’s best fi nish since placing second in 2008. It was also the Ducks’ 16th top-10 fi nish all-time in 22 NCAA Championship appearances. Oregon fi nished 12th at the 2010 NCAA meet.

The four Ducks who followed Hasay across the fi nish line all posted NCAA career bests. Michel was 72nd in 20:48.8, Crossman took 76th in 20:50.6, Thompson was 80th in 20:52.9 and Becca Friday was 145th in 21:22.1. Molly Grabill fi nished 207th in 21:56.3 and Anne Kesselring was 229th in 22:12.1 to round out Oregon’s runners.

The men’s race featured one of the deepest fi elds in years and the results showed it. Pac-12 champion Lawi Lalang of Arizona, the pre-meet favorite, won comfortably, going 10,000 meters in 28:44.1. Chris Derrick charged at the end to fi nish second in 28:57.5, with Leonard Korir of Iona third in 29:02.5, Southern Utah’s Cameron Levins, the 2011 Bill Dellinger Invitational winner, fourth in 29:04.8, Mohammed Ahmed of Wisconsin fi fth in 29:06.7 and Puskedra sixth in 29:09.3.

The last race of his cross country career marked the ninth consecutive top-10 fi nish for Puskedra, a sting that covered his entire junior and senior seasons. Wisconsin won the men’s team title with 97 points; the Badgers also won the 2011 Dellinger Invitational crown.
