FROM THE RECTOR Dear Parents and Guardians I hope the school holidays were a blessed time for you and your family. On the second last day of Term 3, the College student leaders for 2014 were announced at the Rector’s Assembly. We congratulate Dan Vaughan who is the new College Captain and Zac Haussegger and Dorian Sorace who are the new Vice Captains. The College Prefects for 2014 will be announced towards the end of the first week of Term 4. At the Rector’s Assembly I spoke to the students and staff about the leadership of Nelson Mandela. I have recently enjoyed reading a short biography on him authored by Richard Stengel. Stengel collaborated with Mandela in the creation of his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. In this much shorter book Stengel sought to explore the qualities of Mandela as the man and, in particular, his journey of self-discovery as a leader. In many ways Nelson Mandela’s journey began after his father died when he was nine and he went to live in the royal village of the local king. He put himself through university working as a paralegal in a small Jewish law firm in Johannesburg, before establishing the first black law firm in South Africa with his friend Oliver Tambo. During the 1950s and early 1960s both Mandela and Tambo became key figures in the African National Congress fighting against the racial discrimination and injustices within apartheid -led South Africa. As part of that journey, Mandela made the difficult decision to embrace violence as part of the struggle for freedom, including the bombing government buildings. In 1962 Mandela was arrested and convicted for treason and conspiracy to overthrow the government. This led him to spend the next twenty-seven years in prison, including the first twenty years on Robben Island. In 1990 he was released from prison after he decided to negotiate with the government and four years later he was elected as the first President of a free and democratic South Africa. He had walked the path of being a revolutionary, to becoming a reconciler and a symbol of national unity. As I read this biography I was struck by the complexities and contradictions that make up the person of Nelson Mandela, but I was also moved by his courage and the manner in which he responded to the various ways in which he was tested during his life. At times he was prepared to lead from the front, being a symbol of hope to his fellow prisoners on Robben Island. At other times he was prepared to lead from the back, empowering others and being a valuable team contributor. He was a man of principle—equal rights for all, regardless of their race, class or gender and he dedicated his life to this, including during his time in prison where he won the respect and admiration of the guards. This was because one of his starting points was his desire always to see the good in the other person. Hopefully, none of us will ever know what it is like to spend twenty-seven years in prison but Stengel points out that for Mandela his time in prison did not leave him feeling embittered, but it in fact broadened him as a person. It taught him patience; it enabled him to become a more discerning person and gave him a greater appreciation of the importance of love in his life. (Continued from page 1) In 1975, about half way through his time on Robben Island, Mandela wrote to his wife Winnie. In this letter he said:

The cell is an ideal place to learn to know yourself, to search realistically and regularly the process of your own mind and feelings. In judging our progress as individuals we tend to concentrate on external factors such as one’s social position, influence and popularity, wealth and standard of education. These are, of course, important in measuring one’s success in material matters and is perfectly understandable if many people exert themselves mainly to achieve all these. But internal factors may be even more crucial in assessing one’s development as a human being. Honesty, sincerity, simplicity, humility, pure generosity, absence of vanity, readiness to serve others—qualities which are within easy reach of every soul—are the foundation of one’s spiritual life.

This year the Xavier community has been blessed by the presence of our Year 12s and the leadership that they have provided as a year level, not just here on the Senior Campus but throughout the College with a number of them being a regular presence at Burke Hall and Kostka Hall. I particularly want to pay tribute to our College Captain Rory Dempsey and our Vice Captains Joe Sexton and Dan Crisafi. For me these three young men have embodied those qualities enunciated by Mandela to his wife Winnie—their honesty, sincerity, simplicity, humility, pure generosity and their readiness to serve others. Through their example our College has been enriched and I thank Rory, Joe, Dan and all of our Year 12s for their contribution to the life of our College. As we prepare to farewell our Year 12s in the coming weeks and welcome our new student leaders for 2014, I have every confidence in their ability to continue to inspire each of us and build upon the legacy of the Class of 2013.

Wishing you every blessing

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Guardians I hope you have had a restful and renewing break with your family. The change in seasons is upon us as we begin the final term for 2013. There is an old story about the importance of renewal that I came across during the holidays and it has stayed with me for the last week. It begins: Once upon a time, a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a timber merchant and he got it. The pay was really good and so were the work conditions. For those reasons, the woodcutter was determined to do his best. His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was supposed to work. The first day, the woodcutter brought eighteen trees. “Congratulations,” the boss said. “Go on that way!” Very motivated by the words of the boss, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he could only bring fifteen trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he could only bring ten trees. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees. “I must be losing my strength”, the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologised, saying that he could not understand what was going on. “When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” the boss asked. “Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees…” As our Year 12 students begin their last weeks of preparation for VCE exams and their rite of passage from our school, I ask you to keep them in your prayers. We have been blessed by an outstanding cohort of young men and we look forward to celebrating their many achievements.

As we reach the start of this final term it is timely to look back in gratitude at a year where thanks to the efforts of teachers and students, there has been much “sharpening of the tools” of teaching and learning. The skills and knowledge gained are now applied at a deeper level: my prayer is that all at Xavier College will find inspiration during the coming weeks to explore, reflect, enquire, challenge and engage in the quest for wisdom and understanding, ultimately for God’s greater glory. Blessings and peace for the coming week.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE SENIOR CAMPUS Dear Parents and Guardians

Welcome to Term 4. This is the time of year where our community is involved in transition. A number of significant events will occur during the next two months which will highlight this transition phase of the year: At the Rector’s Assembly this week, the Student Leadership Team for 2014 will be announced. This group will then be in place

for a handover from the current Leadership Team before they depart on 22 October.

On 22 October our Year 12 students and their families will join with the whole school community to celebrate their last day of school—this day will be one of the highlights of the year as we acknowledge the achievements of the Class of 2013.

On 20 November, Year 9 students for 2014 will have a Transition Day at the Senior Campus where they will meet key people and have an orientation to the ‘big school’.

In the week beginning 25 November, Year 11 students (and those Year 10 students studying a 3/4 subject) will be engaged in their Headstart program to help prepare for VCE courses in 2014.

All students will be sitting final exams in many subjects during the second half of November. For senior students, these exams will have some bearing on final subject choices for their 2014 pattern of study.

I wish all a very successful last term.

A PEEK AT THE PAST—XAVIER 100 YEARS AGO For those who may remember the days of Cadets, the Xavier chronicle tells the following story:

Saturday, October 4—M.U. Rifles out at Preston all the afternoon, most of the evening, and one energetic volunteer signaller, most of the night. A sad fate overcame the school champion rifle shot and walker (an excellent combination for an infantry man), who, doing some scouting, slipped heavily and was caught neatly in mud above his knees. Then the gallant sergeant, after repeated efforts to extricate the champion, united all the section’s belts, suspended them as a pulley over a neighboring [sic] tree, and the united efforts of the section hoisted the warrior to firmer earth. Meanwhile the enemy looked on amused, and escaped before the rescue was quite accomplished.

With blessings for the fortnight ahead. Kind regards

John Hickey Director of the Senior Campus [email protected]

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING NAPLAN RESULTS 2013 Xavier College NAPLAN results for 2013 were excellent with particularly good outcomes for Year 9 students in Writing, Grammar, Punctuation, and Numeracy. Students in Year 9 performed on average thirty-six points above the state average in all areas of testing. The NAPLAN tests completed in May, with results to be mailed to parents in forthcoming days, provide us with a snapshot of your son’s progress across a range of areas and, along with Allwell testing in alternate years, allows us to see progress in cohorts and individuals. Ongoing, regular teacher assessment using both formal and informal instruments adds to our understanding of your child’s progress and the feedback we provide to you throughout the year, culminating in both written reports and parent/teacher interviews which are key aspects of supporting your son’s learning.

HEADSTART YEAR 12 2014: 25 NOVEMBER – 29 NOVEMBER 2013 In an effort to maximise every opportunity for learning and provide a ‘headstart’ for Xavier College students completing Unit 3/4 classes in 2014 (this includes ALL current Year 11 students and those Year 10 students who intend to do a 3/4 subject as part of their Year 11 academic program) we will begin the teaching of those classes for five school days commencing Monday 25 November and concluding Friday 29 November. It is expected that all students will attend these classes as the formal teaching of Unit 3/4 subjects will begin then. This will include preparation for SACs, reading programs, preliminary work in folio subjects and ‘summer break work’. Aspects of study designs in every subject will be covered.

EXAMINATION DATES FOR THE END OF THE YEAR We can confirm the dates for examinations which will be held during Term 4. The impact of the VCAA examinations on Year 11 examination program has been taken into account and we have sought to minimise that impact while maintaining a rigorous program for all. Details of dates and time for all examinations will be available in forthcoming weeks from the relevant Operations Coordinator

Year 11 8 – 19 November Examination block (Please note 19 November is a ‘catch-up slot’ for those with clashes due to VCAA

examination commitments.) 22 November Exam Review Day—includes reflection on the year with House personnel and return of

examinations. 25 – 29 November Headstart Program for all Year 11 students Year 10 15 – 22 November Examination block 25 – 29 November Headstart Program for those students doing a Year 12 3/4 subject in 2014. 3 December Exam Review Day—includes reflection on the year with House personnel and return of

examinations. Year 9 22 November – 2 December Examination block 3 December Exam Review Day—includes reflection on the year with House personnel and return of

examinations. Maths supplementary program for select students in Year 10 (2 – 4 December) and in Year 11 (18 – 20 November). Students will be advised of the requirements on an individual basis.

BOOKLISTS AND SECOND-HAND BOOK SALES The Senior Campus booklists will be available on the College Portal from Monday 14 October. There will also be a special Units 3/4 booklist which, if submitted online to Landmark by Thursday 31 October, will be home-delivered before the Headstart program commences. Any Boarders ordering books through this facility, please state the address as “Xavier College Boarding House, Barkers Road, Kew” and orders will be delivered to the College. The Xavier College Mothers’ Association will conduct two Second-hand book sales this year: On Friday 22 November from 2:00pm – 4:30pm where 2014 Units 3/4 students will be able to purchase books for the

Headstart program and Year 12 subjects in general. On Friday 29 November from 2:00pm – 5:00pm for the sale of Years 9 to 11 books. We are most grateful to the Mothers’ Association for providing this valuable service. Further details will follow in the next newsletter.

CAREERS NEWS YEAR 9 Work Experience will be occurring between Monday 31 March and Friday 4 April 2014 for the current Year 9 boys. Please ensure that your son has already returned his Green Information Gathering form to the Careers Office. These were due last term. Please note that the boys do not send the forms to the employer, the school will do this on your behalf. If your son has lost his form another can be downloaded from the school portal under services/careers/work experience.

YEAR 12 A reminder to parents of Year 12 boys that any student who wants to get an ATAR at the end of the year but does not want to apply for universities or TAFE must submit a form to VTAC with a small processing fee. These forms are available from the Careers Office. Selections for tertiary courses are all handled via VTAC. Instructions for applying are on the Portal under Quick Links. Applications now cost $91.00 and are open until December. It is a common misunderstanding that they will be offered all places for which they are eligible. In truth they will only get one CSP offer which is the highest on their list that they are accepted in. Hence the order becomes very important. Preferences can be changed free of charge as many times as they want during the times the VTAC portal is open. These dates are in the inside front cover of the VTAC guide. All appointments for Career counselling at Xavier College are now done via the Portal at Services/Careers/Appointments. The software highlights a time when your son has a free and when career staff are available. To book, simply click on the required slot. Alternatively send an email to [email protected] to organise a time. Each fortnight an email is sent to all boys outlining current events and opportunities regarding career information. These newsletters are archived for parents and boys to access on to a year later. To find the latest issue and past issues log onto the portal and go to Services/Careers/Newsletters. Kay de Jong Careers Counsellor [email protected]

VCE NEWS

All VCE students have commenced Term 4 having completed trial exams for all their subjects. For students well prepared, the trial exams have provided confidence to carry on their good work. For some students, the trial exams have been the opportunity to highlight areas of concern. Students should appreciate that there is time to make up ground in preparation for the final exams.

VCE EXAMS NAVIGATOR All VCE students should ensure that they refer to their copy of the VCE Exams Navigator. The Navigator includes approved materials, exam rules, the exam timetable and other key information regarding the VCE examinations. A final reminder that students should study their personal VCE Exam Timetable carefully to avoid any late arrivals. Paul Angus VCE Coordinator [email protected]

WITHDRAWAL OF STUDENTS

A reminder that a term’s notice in writing must be given to the Director of Campus if a student is leaving the College, otherwise a full term’s fee will be charged in lieu.

Thank you.

RECOMMENDED READS FROM THE BRENNAN RESOURCE CENTRE Welcome to Recommended Reads! The Xavier College Resource Centres promote a reading culture which

supports and enriches reading for pleasure and develops an appreciation of literature.

TITLE : Leviathan AUTHOR: Paul Auster PUBLISHER: Faber and Faber, 1992

Paul Auster’s novel Leviathan is a mystery. We know who the criminal is from the outset, even before the exact nature of the crime is made clear. The enigma is not “who done it?” but “why”? Ben Sachs has been killed in a blast, apparently while constructing an explosive device. The reader follows as Sachs’ friend Peter Aaron, the narrator, tries to come to grips with the path by which this once promising writer went from books to bombs.

They first meet as struggling novelists. Both have a wish to “say something”, to make a difference in the world. Ben is full of doubts and his marriage is showing cracks. One night at a party, he tumbles from a fourth-floor fire escape, nearly losing his life. The fall is actual and metaphorical. Afterwards he refuses to speak and is strangely remote. Within a week of his 41st birthday, he expresses his desire to end his life as lived until then. Feeling his life has been a waste, he wants everything to change, decides to leave his marriage, moves to a cabin in Vermont and then vanishes. Slowly, over the course of the novel, we get images of Sachs’ life. Then, at the end, it all comes together to an unexpected ending. Leviathan is an amazing and in-depth read. Paul Auster skillfully brings to life the character of Sachs and we become engrossed as we follow the life of Sachs to his final and conclusive ending.

2013 AUSTRALIAN JESUIT SCHOOLS’ BASKETBALL CARNIVAL The Xavier Basketball team travelled to St Aloysius College, Milson’s Point, Sydney from Sunday 29 September to Wednesday 2 October to participate in the bi-annual Jesuit Basketball Carnival. Sunday evening comprised the opening Mass in the St Aloysius Chapel followed by an informal meal overlooking the spectacular lights of Sydney Harbour from the school’s balcony, before players headed off with their St. Aloysius host families. Xavier’s first game on Monday morning was against St Aloysius. After a close tussle all game Xavier was down by one point with point five of a second on the clock remaining. Sean Bienacki accepted the inbound pass and hit the three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to get the tournament off to a stunning start. A win against St Ignatius Adelaide in the afternoon and further wins against Riverview and Loyola on Tuesday put Xavier in to the play-off game on Wednesday against Riverview. Despite having beaten Riverview comfortably on the Tuesday there was no doubting Riverview would be a much tougher opponent for the final game and this proved to be the case. Riverview led by three points early in the third quarter before the Xavier team steadied and, with intense defence and continual fast breaking offence, wore the opposition down to win by nine points. All Xavier players are to be commended on the way they conducted themselves both on and off the court. The Carnival was an excellent opportunity for players to exhibit camaraderie and sportsmanship over the four days. Xavier is grateful for the hospitality and hard work from the

staff and parents of the host school, St Aloysius, in the staging of a most enjoyable Carnival. The Xavier Team: Sean Biernacki
