Dear Parents and Guardians Last Friday our Year 12 students participated in their Service Day as one of their last contributions to the Xavier Community. Many students returned to Burke Hall and Kostka Hall, while some other students returned to their parish primary schools. A significant part of this activity is that it provides students with the opportunity to acknowledge and to thank the communities that have been an integral part of their educational journey and to symbolise their gratitude through one final act of service. FROM THE RECTOR - CONT’D Sorace’s victory in the 3000 metres. The athletes demonstrated extraordinary courage and determination and through their performances set the hearts of all the supporters on fire. Special congratulations to Jono Lightfoot (Year 7 Kostka) who set two new APS records in winning the U/14 Shot Put and U/14 High Jump. At the Athletics Dinner on Saturday night Jono received the John Tutton Award in recognition of him as the Xavier Athlete of 2013. I would also like to acknowledge the leadership of Adrian Sanfilippo and Richard Wilton who were our Captain and Vice Captain of Athletics. Adrian led by example in winning the Open Hurdles in the first 15 minutes of competition. He set a new College record in the heats on Wednesday and came within 4/100ths of a second of repeating this on Saturday. We pray for a speedy recovery for James Hart in Year 10 who broke his tibia competing in the high jump. As I write this article, Dr Hayes is in Sydney with his mother who is seriously ill. I would encourage you all to pray for Mrs Hayes as she comes towards the end of her life and for Dr Hayes and his family at this time of sadness. Best wishes to our Year 12 as they approach the VCE examinations next week. Wishing you all every blessing.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF KOSTKA HALL

Dear Parents and Guardians I often talk of the full and rich life that students, staff and parents experience at Xavier. The experiences of the last fortnight serve to highlight this: On Tuesday during Assembly we had a special farewell and blessing for our Kostka Hall Senior Prefects, Laurence Sorace and Alex Valente who have given so tirelessly of their time throughout the year – assisting in Early Years and mentoring our Middle Years students. In the afternoon the Kostka Hall staff had a presentation from Callum Parker on the ways in which technology will transform learning opportunities for students. Callum has been regularly working with staff as we all grow in our knowledge and enthusiasm of the ways in which we can improve learning. In fact Callum was invited to present at a recent state conference on better practice use of iPads. On Wednesday night we had the dynamic presentation of “Notables” by our Year Seven students. Year Sevens investigate a person of note who displays Ignatian qualities. This trans disciplinary unit culminates in an evening where the boys dress as their notable and present their research to Year 7 families and friends. I was impressed with the students’ knowledge, creativity and imagination as were many parents. Thursday saw a small representative group of Early Years and Middle Years students attend the Mission Mass with other Catholic Schools across Melbourne at St Patrick’s Cathedral. In his homily, Bishop Felix Thang from Myanmar invited all children to treat all people in the world as God's children and to help those who are less fortunate. On this same day we had the great book swap at the Campus where students exchange books. This was organised by our Library staff and Year Four students to raise money for the Indigenous Literacy Project. (Students donate books and pay for a swap). This will be followed this week with the staff book swap. It was good to see so many children happy to go home with a new set of books under their arms.

On Friday we had a beautiful Early Years Music Concert which highlighted classroom music, the strings program and the choir program. I took great joy in watching the children enjoy their music and perform it with such excellence. Also on Friday we had 30 ex-Kostka boys from the Senior Campus who, as part of their finishing school with dignity, participated in a day of service at Kostka Hall across the Early and Middle Years. There was much excitement on the Campus to have the Senior boys assisting in classrooms and playing with the younger students at break time. I think our Early, Middle and Senior Years students all went home happy and exhausted. On Saturday night we had the KHMA Cocktail Party in Manresa Hall. I was truly taken back by the transformation of Manresa Hall. The lighting, the music, furniture, catering and atmosphere were truly special. It was great to catch up with so many parents in a relaxed and happy setting.

I am particularly grateful to the following parents and families for their contribution to creating a truly special event: Elissa Clausen, Mel Turner and Freya Ralph for the vision and organisation of the evening Anna Wright-Smith for her drive and determination in overseeing a successful evening Nick and Francesca Gulino from Dann Event Hire for their generosity in donating all the furniture for the evening

even though they were unable to attend Marita and Pat Burke for donating the Mecca Cosmetics Raffle prize and donating and designing the invitations

and organising the music for the night. Liz and Kirk Edwards and Village Roadshow for another raffle prize Silvana Danielis Morley for stringing up all the fairy lights with our groundsman, Rodney Bloss. I am also very grateful to the following families for the set up on Saturday and taking down on Sunday: Turner Family Clausen Family Burke Family Wright-Smith Family Hansen Family Conacher Family Bromage Family Bryce Family Danielis-Morley Family The events bring people together in a common purpose and contribute to building a strong community. On Saturday during the day we had the APS Athletics. Ben Carvalho (Year 8), Tom Higgins (Year 8), Bailey Smith (Year 7) and Jonathan Lightfoot (Year 7) all competed. Congratulations to Jonathan Lightfoot who broke two APS records in the U14 High Jump (1.75m) and Shot Put (14.29m) winning both events. Jonathan was also awarded the John Tutton Award as Xavier Athlete for 2013. Coming up we have the Year 12 Valete evening, Early Years, Swim Program, Music Prize night, Middle Years Cross Country Carnival and our eagerly anticipated Kostka Hall Art Show next Monday 28 October. I am constantly inspired by the dynamic and enthusiastic staff at Kostka Hall who not only make so much of this happen but approach it all with professionalism and joy. Hearts are ablaze here with learning and community. I look forward to another full and rich fortnight.

Withdrawal of Students

A reminder that a term’s notice in writing must be given to the Director of Campus if a student is leaving the College, otherwise a full term’s fee will be charged in lieu.

Thank you. Dianne Odgers Registrar

Year 12 Service Day On Friday 18 October a number of our Year 12 students returned to Kostka in their final days of schooling at Xavier College. The purpose of the morning was for the Senior Students to engage once again with the Kostka Hall community. For many of the boys, more time has been spent at Kostka Hall than on the Senior Campus so this was a wonderful opportunity to reunite and say thank you. A special thank you to Mr Jerry Mulcahy who coordinated this event in my absence and made it a very memorable occasion for our students. We wish the boys the best of luck for their future endeavours, especially in the weeks ahead. Term Four Uniform The summer uniform is optional in Term 4. However students who continue to wear the winter uniform are expected to wear the blazer to and from school. Students are reminded that the sports jacket is not part of the day-to-day uniform. It may only be worn over the uniform to or from school when it is actually raining. Start of the School Day Parents are reminded that classes begin for Years 5 to 8 at 8:40am each morning. Students who arrive after that time must report to the School Office to record their name and receive a late pass. Student Pick Up After School Please remember that after 3:40pm students in Years 5 to 8 must be picked up from the car park at the front of Maritima. Information for Parents at Xavier College In an attempt to streamline information for parents and students at Xavier College, an area has been established for all families to view information that directly relates to the needs of each year level. This information outlines some of the following areas: Important dates Daily Operations School Uniforms Elective Programs incl. Music Tuition [2014] Student Wellbeing Parent Associations This new feature on the College Portal allows information to be updated, so please make time to access this page on a regular basis. Calendar – Reminder I would like to bring to your attention the upcoming school holiday/s calendared for November 4 and 5. No classes will be held on these days due to the Melbourne Cup Long Weekend as appears in the College diary.

Over the past couple of weeks the strong winds have caused us a few problems. We have unfortunately had some damage caused to a couple of vehicles parked in the Hartley St carpark. Car doors have blown into cars parked close to one another causing paint and body damage. Displays in the St Johns’ Foyer have been damaged as the entrance doors have been left open. Could you please supervise children in the carpark closely and remember to shut the entrance door to St Johns’ as we move in and out. Music Concert Thank you to our families and special friends for supporting our Early Years students by your attendance at our annual concert on Friday afternoon. The students really look forward to performing in front of family members. This year the concert was in Manresa Hall for the first time and it was great to use the stage to showcase our very talented students. Swimming Program Our intensive swimming program is running all this week. The students really benefit from an intensive program as their skills are consolidated with the daily practice. This year we will be holding a swimming carnival as the final activity which will be held on Wednesday 30 October. Art Show The students have been working diligently to complete a number of art pieces for our upcoming Art Show. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend the official opening in Manresa Hall at 7:00pm on Monday 28 October.

The Great Book Swap Last Thursday, The Great Book Swap was held in the Library. Once again this was very popular with the students from Prep to Year Eight. The children had fun choosing their books and know that they have contributed to a very good cause. A big “thankyou” to Miss Gorman and the Year Four class for collecting the books and for running the show on the day. We raised $270.00 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. This money will go towards buying books for children living in remote Indigenous communities.

Annual Children’s Mission Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral On Thursday 17 October 2013 a number of students and staff from both the Early Years and Middle Years represented Xavier College at the annual Children’s Mission Mass held at St Patrick’s Cathedral. The principal celebrant of the Mass was Most Reverend Felix Thang, the Bishop of Kalay in Myanamar. The Cathedral was full to overflowing with students and staff from schools in the Melbourne diocese celebrating the works of Catholic Mission. There was a wonderful feeling of connectedness as the congregation gathered to celebrate the Eucharist together. Term Three was a very busy term in Science. Term Four promises to be as busy with our classes undertaking both excursions and incursions examining topics including space, the dynamic earth, simple machines and cells. I hope to be able to talk with some of our departing Year Eight students regarding their experiences in science at Kostka Hall and wish them all the best for their time at the Senior Campus. During Term Three we held several competitions related to science and we received some fantastic entries particularly from our Year Five group. The quality of the entries was so high it forced me to award bigger and better prizes and more of them! I congratulate everyone who entered and particularly our winners. The winners were chosen on their scientific content, the aesthetic of their poster and their originality. The winners of our poster competition on the greatest Australian invention of the past 125 years were- Darcy Kelly- Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer Sam Grogan – Flush Toilet Tom Lowe – Hills Hoist Clothes Line Daniel Iarussi- The Jameson Cell The winner of the lab coat design contest was Oliver Kan from 6 Arrupe who will complete his design on my lab coat later this year. Late last term we also received notification that two of our Year Eight students had received Distinctions in the Big Science competition. This result put the boys in the top 15% of students completing the competition. I congratulate Joshua Vaughan and Campbell Timms on their achievement, Well done boys! NEWS FROM THE MIDDLE YEARS COORDINATOR This past fortnight has been another rewarding one at Kostka Hall. The Year Sevens have completed their Night of the Notable unit of independent learning and it was a great success, fostering autonomy and imagination as they strove to research, analyse, compose and present their findings in an imaginative and unique manner. I commend all of the students on their efforts. Our Year Eights are busy preparing for the up-coming examinations in Week Six and I encourage all students in this year level to strike the right balance between study and recreation. We are all very aware of how important a regular routine is for teenage boys when preparing for examinations and also how necessary it is to engage in physical exercise on a daily basis.

This year as part of the Leadership process the Year Six students will cast a ballot in the student elections. This innovation is proving to be most popular and I was most impressed by the calibre of the question asked by the Year Six boys when Ms Upfold explained the details to them. I am looking forward to seeing the Leadership applications and to the discourse between the year levels as the merits of each application is discussed. At the recent School Assembly we bade farewell to our Year Twelve Prefects for Kostka Hall. Alex Valente and Laurence Sorace have shown themselves to be wonderful role models and have been most willing to assist in so many aspects of the school life over the course of the past year. We all wish them every success in the up-coming VCE exams and indeed we wish well our entire Year Twelve cohort. At the same assembly we also welcomed newly chosen Kostka Hall Prefects for 2014, Seamus Horan and Xavier Tierney; we look forward to working closely with these outstanding young men next year. The College Captain Daniel Vaughan spoke of his hopes for 2014 at the assembly and he introduced his Vice-Captains Zac Haussegger and ex Kostka Hall student, Dorian Sorace. I was delighted to see so many ex- Kostka Hall boys so well represented in the list of College Leaders for 2014, we wish them every success in their endeavours.

On Friday 18 October we welcomed back a large group of Year Twelve students as they engaged in a Service Day. It was a wonderful opportunity for us as a community to welcome them and to wish them well in their exams and also to appreciate just how much they have matured into fine young men. Our Year Fives continue to mature and it is most evident that they will be a positive and enthusiastic influence as they prepare for their move into Year Six next year. Also in Year Five Luke Baldi in 5 Arrupe recently organized a fundraising event for charity, Save the Children and the Jesuit school in East Timor. Luke arranged for the Years Five and Six students as well as the visiting Year Twelves on their Service day to participate in a basketball shootout. Luke very generously donated i-tunes vouchers as prizes. The event was another example of a student going out of his way to assist others. I commend Luke on his efforts and for his generosity, well done Luke.

Kostka Refurbishment When we arrived back at school for the start of Term Four, we realised that the toilets were demolished and being rebuilt along with the upstairs Year Seven classrooms. This is great because it means that once completed, students in the future will have access to great new learning facilities and classrooms. The two new staff offices that will be built downstairs will also be a great new addition. We also noticed the newly refurbished Open Learning Areas with house-theme coloured walls. These renovations will give Kostka Hall an even greater feeling of welcome that will last for years to come. James Moloney

Rowing

This term a number of Year Eight students from Kostka Hall and Burke Hall have selected Rowing as their sport. Rowing is a very physically and mentally demanding sport. The Year Eight students have all been working very hard practising their stroke and improving fitness levels. Rowing is also a large commitment with Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning training. Despite all the challenges rowing presents the students, they are pulling their weight, with the boats now being rowed faster and with more precision. Rowing also forms new friendships with students from different campuses. We wish the rowers the best of luck with their training and rowing career. Jack Lowe

Xavier College Year 12 Prefects Over the past few weeks the teachers and students at the Senior Campus have been deciding on the new College Captains for 2014. Last week they were finalised and we congratulate Daniel Vaughan (College Captain) and Dorian Sorace and Zac Haussegger (Vice Captains). We also would like to congratulate Seamus Horan and Xavier Tierney for being named the Kostka Hall Prefects for 2014. As we congratulate these young men we also would like to farewell and thank the 2013 Kostka Hall Prefects, Laurence Sorace and Alex Valente and wish them well in their VCE exams. Harrison Willems

City Cite In the last week of Term 3, the Year 8’s took part in the Annual one week long City Cite activity. City Cite is a program in which Year 8 students are split up into groups to create a poster and presentation based around a ‘big question’. The ‘big question’ was different for every group and was typically an open ended question. The aim of City Cite was for the Year 8 students to get familiar with the Melbourne CBD and to get used to some independence, if they haven’t already. The group work on the ‘big question’ was also coupled with exciting pre-organised activities such as an MCG tour and a visit from an ex-gambler. Overall, City Cite was an insightful and productive activity that everyone enjoyed. Max Farrell During the last week of Term Three, the Kostka Hall Year Eight’s went to City Cite. The boys were put into groups and were given the freedom to roam the streets of the City of Melbourne, whilst having to complete a group project. The projects consisted of things such as homelessness, youth violence, and art around the city. All went well, and it was a great experience, and one that will be remembered always. Harry Ralph

NEWS FROM THE KOSTKA HALL MOTHERS’ ASSOCIATION

Anna Wright-Smith President KHMA 0421 327 951

Last Saturday night was a wonderful night of celebration for the Kostka Hall community at the inaugural KHMA Cocktail Party. Manresa Hall looked amazing. Fairy lights covered the room and paper lanterns hung over the bar to create a beautiful atmosphere. The night was a really relaxed one. The food was fantastic, the room buzzed and the music wasn’t so loud that you couldn’t hear the person next to you. Thank you to everyone who came along - your support is the most important of all. I hope everyone had an opportunity to meet someone they hadn’t met before and also the chance to catch up with old friends too. In the afterglow of the night, it is wonderful to see that the efforts of so many people were worth the hours of work that went into planning the night. I just want to paint a picture of the effort required to stage an event like this. It gives you some insight into the wonderful school community we have at work at Kostka Hall.

The set up began at 7:15am on Friday morning when the scissor lift arrived courtesy of Aussie Hire and the Clausen family. By 8:30am, Elissa Clausen (Rex, Year 8 and Joe, Year 5) and Mel Turner (Sam, Year 8) unloaded their cars laden with flowers, vases, paper lanterns, electrical cords and lighting. By midday, the transformation had begun. The scissor lift was in action - Silvana Danielis - Morley (Liam, Year 7) and staff member, Rodney were hoisted seven metres in the air and started work on fixing over 4,000 fairy lights to the netting in Manresa Hall. Working below on ladders and at floor level were Mel Turner (Sam, Year 8), Louise Conacher (Daniel,Year 3), Anna Bryce (Will, Year 6 and Tom, Year 7), Antoinette Catalano (Claudia, Year 3 and Alessia, Prep), Michele Bromage (Zac, Year 6, Jemima, Year 3 and Ben, Year 1) and Suzie Hansen (Jimmy, Year 5). Saturday morning, Elissa and Mel were back again to put the finishing touches to the space. Their cars were full of balloons. Mel was joined by daughter Holly who was such a wonderful help with the set up. Now it was time for the men to swing into action. The lighting above the bar area needed to be hung. Mark Hansen assisted by son, Jimmy and fellow classmate, Rory Cahill; Jim Wright-Smith, assisted by son’s Ben and Charlie and daughter, Emma; and Pat Burke, assisted by daughter, Frankie got to work. They had the lighting finished in no time with Elissa project managing from the floor. On cue, the Dann Event Hire truck drove in and unloaded the stools, tables,

carpet, bars ... everything you need for a pop-up party. We are so very grateful to Nick and Francesca Gulino (Julia, 4 Year old Kinder and Nicholas 3 Year old Kinder) for their generosity. The space looked incredible on the night thanks to

their fantastic hire furniture. The staff at Dann Event Hire were wonderful to deal with and I cannot thank them enough. Without their support the school’s tables, chairs and trestles would have had to suffice and the effect wouldn’t have been nearly as inviting. I know as a school community we will support Dann Event Hire in the same way they have supported us www.danneventhire.com.au. Once the furniture was set up we had a glimpse of how fantastic the room was going to look on the night. Mel and Elissa worked their magic placing masses of beautiful flowers on the bar, tea lights everywhere and balloons on tables. The attention to detail made the room so atmospheric. At 5:15pm the caterer arrived. By 6:00pm the girls were back

again to roll out the red carpet and get ready for the guests to arrive. I’m exhausted just writing about it, but I’m sure everyone involved would agree, the effort was worth it. To walk into Manresa Hall as dusk was approaching and to see the warm glow from the room and the incredibly welcome atmosphere was just wonderful. But the event did not end there. The next day, the Clausen and Turner families were back at school to begin the clean up. The scissor lift was in action again with Vince Turner and Rex Clausen up on the lift this time. The hire furniture had to be packed away ready for collection. Once again a group of parents and children from the Kostka community turned up to help. Thanks to Freya and Chris Ralph (Harry, Year 8), Anna Bryce, Cath Hansen (Jack, Year 6), Rupert Baxter, Joe Clausen and Charlie Wright-Smith for their help. The Clausen and Turner families put aside a whole weekend to stage this event for us. As a school community we are so very grateful to them for giving up their time so we could all enjoy a night together as a school community. On behalf of everyone at Kostka Hall, thank you.
