Hi and welcome to the Scrap Archetype! If you're new here, as if you're reading this post

I'm sure you might be, congratulations! You have stumbled upon one of the most

underrated Decks of this past format. If you are a semi-competent player, you should be

able to find a lot of success in this Deck, and one of the biggest payouts of playing this

Deck is that as you get better, you will see more and more success. This is not a herp-

derp Deck. This Deck takes skill, patience, and careful strategy, and sometimes even

with that, you will lose. But as a collective unit in this thread, we aim to show that this

Deck has far superior competitive potential to what is expected of it, as I myself and

countless others have proven time and time again. This is not a Deck to be taken lightly.

And if you put in the effort, you will see that it is possible to be good at Yu-Gi-Oh.

These are cards that literally every Scrap Deck should run!

Page 3: Xae's Guide to everything Scrap

Scrap Goblin

EARTH ***

Beast-Warrior/Tuner

This card cannot be destroyed by battle. If this face-up Defense Position card is selected

as an attack target, destroy this card at the end of the Battle Phase. If this card is

destroyed by the effect of a "Scrap" card and sent to the Graveyard, you can select 1

"Scrap" monster in your Graveyard, except "Scrap Goblin" and add it to your hand.

One of our main tuners. Not THE most important, but definitely of importance. He's very

durable and will help keep you in the games for a few extra turns, which can mean a

huge difference in scraps, as a very powerful control Deck. Play 2-3.

Scrap Beast

EARTH ****

Beast/Tuner

If this face-up Defense Position card is selected as an attack target, destroy this card at

the end of the Battle Phase. If this card is destroyed by the effect of a "Scrap" card and

sent to the Graveyard, you can select 1 "Scrap" monster in your Graveyard, except

"Scrap Beast" and add it to your hand.

He has the same effect as Goblin, except he can be destroyed by battle, making it so that

only under very rare circumstances will he be destroyed by his own effect. He is, for now,

our primary tuner, and should also be played at 2-3 copies, but definitely lean towards 3.

Only play 2 if you max out Scrapyard, and even then, you could still play 3. He is

Chimera's favorite target, as it makes an instant Scrap Dragon, THE main card of the Deck.

Page 4: Xae's Guide to everything Scrap

Scrap Chimera

EARTH ****

Beast/Effect

This card cannot be used as a Synchro Material Monster, except for the Synchro Summon

of a "Scrap" monster and all the other Synchro Material Monsters must also be "Scrap"

monsters. When this card is Normal Summoned, you can select 1 "Scrap" Tuner monster

in your Graveyard and Special Summon it.

Think of Debris Dragon, Blackwing - Blizzard the Far North, Junk Synchron, and all those

other decently broken cards, and then imagine what would happen if you could make an

8 Star Synchro, and removed all of the "Can't Attack" or "Defense Position" or "Effect

Negated" clauses. That, ladies and gentlemen, is Scrap Chimera. Now, unfortunately you

can only make Scrap Synchroes, but with 1, 2, 3, 4, and even 5 star scrap tuners, you

have a lot of options, but really you only need to worry about Scrap Dragon. Always play

Chimera in 3's.

Scrap Golem

EARTH *****

Rock/Effect

Once per turn, you can select 1 Level 4 or lower "Scrap" monster in your Graveyard and

Special Summon it to either player's side of the field.

Think for a moment, if you will, about the very first card on this list. Look him over. Read

his effect again. Get a feel for him. Shake his hand, take him out to dinner, and make

him feel pretty. That is what Scrap Golem did, and that is why they are married and have

beautiful Scrap Searcher babies. Scrap Golem abuses the everloving nuts off of Scrap

Goblin. Remember the prime focus of this Deck? Scrap Dragon? Summon Golem, activate

his effect on Goblin, and Blam-O, instant Scrap Dragon. You can also use Beast, Goblin's

sister, for a Twin Dragon (Golem cheats every once in a while. He's not proud.) But, at

the end of the day, Golem always comes back to Goblin, because special summoning a 0

ATK monster to your opponent's field that cannot be destroyed by battle is one of the

Page 5: Xae's Guide to everything Scrap

most illegitmate ways to win since Colossal Arm came out, but damn does it feel good.

It's Scrap S3x. It's how little baby Searchers were born. Just make sure you don't do it if

they have backrow, because then you are just giving them a free tuner. And that's how

Scrap Mind Reader was made. Please don't make more Scrap Mind Readers. Play 1-2

copies.

Scrap Archfiend

EARTH *******

Fiend/Synchro

1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner Monsters

If you're in a pinch, and you have Chimera and all you have is a Goblin in the grave,

sometimes you have to make this guy. You'll regret not playing at least 1 of this card in

your extra Deck.

Scrap Dragon

EARTH ********

Dragon/Synchro

1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner Monsters

Once per turn, you can select 1 card you control and 1 card your opponent controls.

Destroy them. When this card is destroyed by your opponent's card (either by battle or

by card effect) and sent to the Graveyard, select 1 non-Synchro "Scrap" monster in your

Graveyard and Special Summon it.

If you're reading this, you're probably just starting to pick up the Deck, but you've

hopefully already played this card before. His generic synchro requirements make him

Page 6: Xae's Guide to everything Scrap

splashable in almost every Deck nowadays, and most have abused this. If you play

yugioh, you should already know what he can do and how good he is at it. Now, imagine

that his second effect actually did something, and you have a 2300 beater that can bring

out a tuner next turn in your graveyard. Also imagine that, by using his effect on a tuner,

you get a +1 in the form of a Debris/Blizzard that can bring out ANOTHER SCRAP DRAGON next turn. Play 3.

Scrap Twin Dragon

EARTH *********

Dragon/Synchro

1 "Scrap" Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters

Once per turn, you can select 1 card you control and 2 cards your opponent controls.

Destroy the one you control and return the two your opponent controls to the hand.

When this card is destroyed by your opponent's card (either by battle or by card effect)

and sent to the Graveyard, select 1 non-Synchro "Scrap" monster in your Graveyard, and

Special Summon it.

Not as good as Scrap Dragon, but still very useful to have. Bigger than Scrap Dragon,

and a lot better against multiple synchros for obvious reasons.

Scrapstorm

Quickplay Spell

Select 1 face-up "Scrap" monster you control. Send 1 "Scrap" monster from your Deck to

the Graveyard, then draw 1 card. Then, destroy the selected monster.

Remember all that other stuff which makes scraps so good? The Golem plays, the

unkillable synchros, the continuous card advantage, the Chimera --> instant Dragon, the

fact that a lot of people don't even consider this Deck a threat, don't side against it, and

allow people like me and many others to consistently win consecutive regionals? Well, on

Page 7: Xae's Guide to everything Scrap

top of all that, you are not afraid of Bottomless Trap Hole, Dimensional Prison,

Compulsory Evacuation Device, Book of Moon, Mind Control, Enemy Controller, Gemini

Spark, Hero Blast, Icarus Attack, and more. One of scrap players' weaknesses is the fact

that we really only have 2 playable tuners right now, which puts a big target on their

heads to get destroyed and especially removed from play. Not only will you protect your

monsters from your opponent's cards, you will speed up your Deck by 2 cards, AND gain

advantage if they were so foolish to try to bottomless your Scrap Beast, setting you up for a Chimera play next turn. And remember, Chimera = Scrap Dragon.

Therefore:

Bottomless > Scrap Beast

Scrapstorm > > > Bottomless

Scrap Beast + Scrapstorm > > Bottomless

Summarizing: Bottomless Trap Hole = Scrap Dragon. I skipped a few steps maybe, but

that's what you need to know. Learn it. Live it. Love it. And play 3.

Scrapyard

Normal Spell

Add 1 "Scrap" Tuner Monster from your Deck to your hand.

Your tuners are in a little bit of a short supply, as I said earlier, and the Tuner-Storm

combo is really the core of this Deck. Make sure you always have a tuner. Play 1-3.

Page 8: Xae's Guide to everything Scrap

These are cards that can be run in some Scrap Decks, but are not necessary in every one, as you will see a lot of

variants.

Atomic Scrap Dragon

EARTH **********

Dragon/Synchro

1 "Scrap" Tuner + 2 or more non-Tuner Monsters

Once per turn, you can select 1 card you control and up to 3 cards in your opponent's

Graveyard. Destroy your selected card and return the opponent's cards to the Deck.

When this card is destroyed by your opponent's card (either by battle or by card effect)

and sent to the Graveyard, Select 1 non-Synchro "Scrap" monster from your Graveyard.

and Special Summon it.

A big, mighty, and powerful Scrap Synchro with a decent amount of disruption. But with

2 non-tuners as a requirement, not every scrap Deck can make him easily, and therefore

should not waste the valuable extra Deck space. In my time playing the Deck, I've only

ever had the necessary requirements to make Atomic Scrap Dragon one time, and at that

time he was not a very good card to bring out. If you play Scrap Breaker and Scrap Searcher, he might be a bit easier though. Play 0-2.

Page 9: Xae's Guide to everything Scrap

Scrap Searcher

EARTH *

Winged Beast/Effect

When a "Scrap" monster you control, except "Scrap Searcher", is destroyed and sent to

the Graveyard while this card is in the Graveyard, you can Special Summon this card

from your Graveyard. When this card is Special Summoned, destroy all face-up monsters

you control, except "Scrap" monsters.

A very nice little guy that helps generate even more card advantage off of our most basic

plays. However, at this time, our most efficient ways of destroying our own monsters are

Scrapstorm and Scrap Dragon. Scrapstorm is most effective when activated in response

to an opponent's card such as Bottomless Trap Hole, which means that Scrap Searcher

will miss the timing. Scrap Dragon loves to generate plusses, but really you want to

destroy Scrap Tuners with his effect, to recycle Chimera. The extra Searcher pulls are

nice, but sometimes he just sits there as you continue to recycle tuners. Also, getting

him to the graveyard can be a problem, as wasting a summon for his setting is inefficient

to the flow of the Deck, and Chimera and Golem should be prioritized over him when

using Scrapstorm. Searcher can generate great advantage, but he's too slow for an

already slow-paced Deck, making him not as good as we'd really like him to be. Play 0-2.

Scrap Soldier

EARTH *****

Warrior/Effect

This card cannot be used as a Synchro Material Monster, except for the Synchro Summon

of a "Scrap" monster. If this face-up Defense Position card is selected as an attack

target, destroy this card at the end of the Battle Phase. If this card is destroyed by the

effect of a "Scrap" card and sent to the Graveyard, you can select 1 "Scrap" monster in

your Graveyard, except "Scrap Soldier", and add it to your hand.

A 5 Star tuner makes a very easy Synchro for Twin Dragon with a Scrap Chimera. And,

Page 10: Xae's Guide to everything Scrap

since Chimera has no level restrictions, except that the target must be a tuner, you can

revive this guy for 3800 damage on board with only 1 normal summon. However, he can

sit very dead in hand, and like searcher, he is a pain to get in the grave. The real focus of this Deck is Scrap Dragon, not Twin Dragon. Play 0-1.

Scrap Shark

EARTH ****

Fish/Effect

When an Effect Monster's effect or a Spell Card, Trap Card is activated, destroy this face-

up card on the field. If this card is destroyed by the effect of a "Scrap" card and sent to

the Graveyard, you can send 1 "Scrap" monster from your Deck to the Graveyard.

This suicidal bastard does what he can to help speed up the Deck and make Searcher a

little more viable, but at the waste of a normal summon, he falls a little short. He's slow.

Also, the normal summon is a very crucial thing to a Scrap Deck. Always remember that

the key to this Deck is not Searcher, Chimera, Golem, Beast, Scrapstorm, Scrap Twin

Dragon, or any combination of any of those cards - this Deck REVOLVES around Scrap

Dragon. Every single play you make should in some way help get a Scrap Dragon safely

on the field. Only after he is on the field you are permitted to think about other setups.

Since Scrap Shark's normal summon may help you get out a Scrap Dragon, but

Scrapstorm is sooooo much better. That's what I mean when I say inefficient. Even

setting a Beast to have it die by battle will protect your Life Points and achieve the same

goal. Play 0-3 Shark, 3 if you're playing very graveyard heavy scraps.

Scrap Breaker

EARTH ******

Machine/Effect

If your opponent controls a monster, you can Special Summon this card from your hand.

Page 11: Xae's Guide to everything Scrap

When this card is Special Summoned this way, select 1 face-up "Scrap" monster you

control, and destroy it.

A psuedo-Cyber Dragon, but not as good, and a -1 unless you destroy a tuner with his

effect. Does that first line sound like a "Good" card to you? This is why he's just "Okay."

To his credit, he is a very large monster for scraps, sitting at 2100 and with relatively

easy summoning conditions. Combine him with searcher and you can summon him

basically for free, but remember that Searcher isn't that great either. (If you ever listen

to me rant, you will learn that I think half of the support that we have at our disposal are

not playable because Searcher is too slow.) However, Breaker can find a niche in some

Decks, such as those that do run Searcher, and he is a nice tech in a few variants. Play 0-2.

Scrap Lube

Continuous Spell

Select 1 "Scrap" monster in your Graveyard. Special Summon that monster from the

Graveyard. Its effects are negated. When this card is removed from the field, destroy

that monster. When that monster is removed from the field, destroy this card. You

cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate this card.

The restrictions are kinda painful, but not so bad that you can't get around them.

Definitely a nice tech for a huge setup, but the no Battle Phase clause hurts. Play more

than one in the same turn to get around that. Play 0-3.

If anyone tells you to play any of these cards, take their advice with a grain of salt. (Or slap them in the face!)

Page 12: Xae's Guide to everything Scrap

I will not grace these terrible cards with individual images. Google them if you must know

what they do, but these are generally accepted by the scrap community to not be played

in any Deck, given what cards we have now and the support that we are about to

receive.

Scrap Mind Reader? Let's take a great concept, like a Scrap that can revive himself

from the grave by destroying a scrap we control, then see how much heroin we can

inject into until it's twitching feebly on the ground in a coma-like state, a hollow husk of

what it once was, and completely unrecognizable from what it set out to be. This is the

woe of Scrap Mind Reader. You want it to remove itself from play when it's done? Well,

sure. Only main phase 2? Eh, that really sucks, but sure, why not. Can only use Scrap

non-tuners? **** YOU KONAMI YOU ******* STUPID ****** BARBECUE SAUCE

******* KUMQUATS! Think about what scrap non-tuners we have, then you tell me if it's

any kind of efficient to Synchro with this little child of Scraps. Keep in mind, anything

that does not help bring out Scrap Dragon is basically not good, with a few exceptions.

Mind Reader is not one of them. DO NOT PLAY THIS CARD.

Scrap Worm? A 2 Star tuner simply does not fit into our repertoire at this time.

Guts of Steel? If you play Return from a D.D. this card may be usable, but I can't in all

good conscience as a Scrap Player call that Deck good. Sorry.

Scrap Sheen? Charlie Sheen is winning. His Scrap cousin isn't.

Scrap Rage? You'll rage at how awful this card is if you play it.

Scrap Crash? Might as well scrap your cash if you waste any money on this card.

Since these cards have not been released yet, I won't make any biased speculations

involving their playability in a "guide" to scraps. But feel free to check them out, and

know that their arrival will impact the Scrap Deck a great deal.

« FAQ »

Here are a few rulings that you might want to familiarize yourself with. Don't let ANY

judge tell you otherwise. These are the correct rulings.

Page 13: Xae's Guide to everything Scrap

Book of Moon will not negate Scrapstorm because the activation cost is to select a face-

up monster. When it resolves, that monster can be face-down, and the effect WILL still

resolve and the monster will be destroyed. If the monster is removed from the field, the

effect of Scrapstorm will still resolve, but the monster WILL NOT be destroyed by the

effect of Scrapstorm.

Scrap Tuners (Beast, Goblin, Orthros, Worm) DO NOT ever miss timing. They are "If...

you can" effects, not "When... you can" effects. "If" effects NEVER miss timing.

If a face-down Scrap Tuner is destroyed by a Scrap effect, it will still get its effect,

because in the graveyard it will check how it was destroyed.

Scrap Tuners always resolve in the graveyard at the end of the chain, not within the

chain they are destroyed. So, if you have a Chimera and a Beast on the field and your

opponent Torrentials or Dark Holes or something, you can chain Scrapstorm, target

Beast, and send a Golem to the grave. At the end of the chain, the Chimera from the

field will be in the graveyard, and you can target it with Beast's effect.

Scrap Dragon will only get his revival effect if it is destroyed by an effect or by battle

while under its owner's control, and by a card the owner's opponent controls.

If Scrap Dragon's summon is negated and he is destroyed (such as with Solemn Warning

or Solemn Judgment), he will still get his revival effect. If he is Oppressed, he will be

able to activate his effect, but if your opponent pays another 800 Life Points, he will not

be able to revive another Scrap monster. Basically, they need to pay 1600 Life Points to

stop Scrap Dragon from being summoned AND stop him from reviving anything.

This Deck uses Gravekeeper's Spy as Synchro fodder to set up with huge 2000 defense

and 4 stars for a Scrap Dragon, or even an Arcanite Magician. Some people accept

Breaker, the Magical Warrior as an alternative to GK Spy, and while he is good in Scrap

Decks, just because he is a spellcaster does not make him a replacement for the 2000

defense-staying power of Spy. This Deck also shows a good example of the "Sangan

Engine," coined by Einsam Dolphin, which uses Sangan as a floater for Scrap Dragon

fodder, searching Summoner Monk for another Scrap Dragon, Goblins/Spies for defense,

or Effect Veiler for protection. Using a small number of monsters is key in this variant, as

it relies mostly on destroying Spells and Traps with Scrap Dragon's effect that will

generate card advantage or disruption, such as Compulsory Evacuation Device, Dust

Tornado, Mystical Space Typhoon, Forbidden Lance, and Scapegoat. This variant has

seen the most success in competitive play, winning the most regionals to my knowledge

as well as topping YCS Philly in October 2010.

This Deck also functions on playing a low monster count, as much of the advantage will

come from chainable backrow. This Deck also has a lot more continuous protection

instead of just one-shot effects, such as Royal Oppression in addition to Solemn Warning,

and Royal Decree instead of Seven Tools of the Bandit or Trap Stun. While these would

normally shut down a good deal of your own Deck, with Scraps you can use Decree and

Oppression to give you a window of opportunity to bring out Scrap Dragon without

worrying about pesky traps, and then when you're all nice and set up, you can destroy

Royal Decree with Scrap Dragon's effect, and begin to really dominate the game. 1-2 Pot

of Duality helps to make sure that you see the cards you need when you require them.

For example, flipping a Decree without any way to get out a Scrap Dragon leaves you

very vulnerable without traps, and flipping Oppression without Decree basically kills your

Deck. You'll need to be conservative with your cards, but with solid gameplay you'll never

end up stepping on your own feet.

Other variants include Mill Scraps and Scraptown, the former of which focuses on using

Ryko - Lightswron Hunter and Card Trooper to set up the graveyard, and the latter of

which uses a lot of cards that activate when destroyed, such as Dark Coffin, Geartown,

and also uses Magical Hats. While both of those builds are available, along with many

others, they are neither consistent nor very competitive. Experiment on your own to see

what style fits you best!

Thanks to KKJ and alekon for the artwork, as well as the entire KC reporters team for helping to make this finished project look as good as it does!
