THE LOWDOWNAn institution on the Perth events calendar, adayonthegreen is a series of outdoor concert events, staged in wineries around Australia and recently New Zealand, combining a quality musical experience with fine wine, food and spectacular locations. Media have dubbed adayonthegreen ‘The Big Day Out for grown ups’. The annual all-day event in early November - this year featuring Kasey Chambers And Shane Nicholson, The Whitlams, James Reyne, Ross Wilson, and Dragon - has become an institution starting at 11am and going right through the day.

HISTORYThe combination of the picturesque outdoor location for anyone who loves great music with the added bonus of being able to eat and drink, has proved extremely popular since its inception in 2001. adayonthegreen is about enjoying life’s simple pleasures in a no-fuss, relaxed environment. Last seasons standouts included Leonard Cohen, John Mellencamp and Alicia Keys, and the 2009/10 season looks set to be the biggest and best yet.

THE LOWDOWNHeading down the South Western Highway to Bridgetown this year is a cavalcade of well-known, not-so-well-known but all brilliant musos… over 40 local, national and international solos, duos, trios, groups, and bands playing blues across all of its many genres. In all, over 170 hours of blues, spread across four venues in the heart of Bridgetown, including the Blue Owl’s Nest - a licensed, silk lined marquee on the banks of Geegelup Brook; the licensed Festival Club located in the Town Hall; and the Repertory Club with workshops by day and acoustic performances at night.

HISTORY16 years ago, two blues enthusiasts and a handful of volunteers staged the first Blues At Bridgetown festival, attracting a few hundred people to this most picturesque part of WA’s south west. Today, the festival attracts around 5,000 paying patrons plus another 10,000 or so people of all ages for the incredibly popular free Street Party held along Bridgetown’s main street. The festival is a true not-for-profit community event, run by a small group of volunteers whose number swells to the hundreds in the lead up to, and over the three-day festival.

LOCATIONPICA, Russell Square, Northbridge

WEBSITE pica.org.au

THE LOWDOWNHaunting and explosive, this bold piece of dance theatre will be performed on a purpose-built stage under the Moreton Bay Fig trees in Russell Square, Northbridge. It’s Karaoke night, Broome style. A lone cowboy blows into town. Whips crack, geishas perform and pearl fisherman take to the sea, while the ghosts of Broome’s past flicker on screen. The physicality and raw energy of the performers is balanced with tenderness and beauty. Pumping beats create a vibrant contemporary sound live on stage, contrasted by gentle guitar melodies that evoke balmy outback campfires. Burning Daylight’s Director, Rachael Swain, was inspired by the depiction of Broome at the turn of the 20th Century as an ‘Asian Wild West’. The production features ‘karaoke noodle Western videos’ by Warwick Thornton, the award-winning Director of Samson And Delilah, and features additional music by MC Dazastah of Perth based hip hop crew Downsyde.

HISTORYThis is a brand new event for 2009

THE LOWDOWNSunshine, green grass and a cool breeze whipped up from the Swan, not to mention amazing music from the legendary Paul Kelly in his only headline appearance of 2009 - now that’s our idea of a perfect summer evening. With another all-Aussie lineup that’s enough to fill you with patriotic pride, this year’s Escape boasts some of the best songwriters in recent memory. Always an unforgettable experience, we can’t wait to revisit Paul Kelly’s outstanding back catalogue, sing One Crowded Hour with Augie March and be dazzled by the coquettish Clare Bowditch singing The Start Of War.

HISTORYA fresh face on the festival scene since 2006, Escape To The Park is earning a reputation for its relaxed, boutique vibe. And with one stage, plenty of grass to spread your picnic hamper over and the most picturesque venue in Perth, it’s little wonder. Credited with helping to launch Sarah Blasko to Perth audiences here in 2006, a number of top home-grown acts have graced the stage to date, including The Cruel Sea, Ben Lee, Kate Miller-Heidke, Josh Pyke, and Bob Evans. With our biggest headliner yet in Paul Kelly, Escape 2009 looks set to be the sort of evening you’ll be telling the grandkids about in years to come.

THE LOWDOWNFuture Music Festival is returning in 2010, and the lineup will be like nothing you’ve seen before. But, while that’s top secret just now, we can promise you these will be the hottest tickets in town, with a headliner you won’t be able to miss. Here’s to the Future!

HISTORYWho can forget 2008’s Future Music Festival, headlined by The Chemical Brothers. It was not only voted the Best WA Festival (inthemix 50, 2008), it really raised the bar for electronic festivals in Perth. Followed up with headliners Basement Jaxx, N*E*R*D and CSS earlier this year; Future Music Festival continues to be the festival that sets the benchmark for, well, the future of dance festivals around Australia. Get ready Perth, because the 2010 instalment will blow your mind, as we increase the possibilities once more…

DATESVarious dates from November 2009-January 2010

LOCATIONThe Quarry Amphitheatre, Waldon Drive, City Beach

WEBSITE www.liveatthequarry.com.au and www.mellenevents.com

THE LOWDOWNIndie darling Sarah Blasko cuts the ribbon for the 2009/10 season of Live At The Quarry. All four of her shows sold out in record time and the privileged people who have tickets await her performance with baited breath. But, this is just the beginning... Tim Finn (Split Enz/Crowded House) will be rummaging through his back catalogue for two nights of nostalgic sing-alongs; legendary Aussie outfit The Church are going to weave you into their siren song Under The Milky Way; and rock opera pinups The Ten Tenors are warming up their vocal chords for several dizzying performances.

HISTORYLive At The Quarry launched in February 2008, with an inaugural summer series comprising nine concerts in the Quarry Amphitheatre, a magnificent open-air venue that was previously an abandoned quarry. Following the initial success of Live At The Quarry, which saw acts like Kate Miller-Heidke, Old Man River, James Morrison, Holly Throsby and others play under the stars; Mellen Events and Lloyd Events teamed together to present the 2008/2009 season. The season was an overwhelming success and included the WA debut of Paul Kelly’s A-Z as a major highlight. In fact, every single show in the 2008/2009 season sold out. With Sarah Blasko’s recently announced shows selling out in no time, the 2009/2010 season looks set to follow suit, proving The Quarry Amphitheatre will once again be the place to be this summer.

TICKETSAvailable from BOCS Ticketing outlets bocsticketing.com.au / Phonecharge (08) 9484 1133. Hurry! The Quarry always sells fast.

THE LOWDOWNFor 2010 we are particularly proud to have enticed one of rock’s all time legendary artists, Faith No More, and one of today’s most talented and intriguing bands, My Chemical Romance, to top the bill. Joining them will be indie legends and festival kings Jane’s Addiction; the kings of dark punk, AFI; and one of the hottest bands in the world, Paramore. We are also thrilled to be graced by the presence of the newly reformed and legendary Sunny Day Real Estate, and the hotly anticipated return of Get Up Kids and Alexisonfire. In true Soundwave fashion there will be plenty of great new bands to discover as well old and new favourites..

HISTORYOne of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the pyramids have baffled archaeologists as to how those huge chunks of rock were assembled together some 2500 years ago. Following its most successful year, we are hoping that in years from now, folks will look at the 2010 Soundwave line-up and wonder how so much rock from around the world was assembled together in five cities across Australia.

DO’S AND DON’TS

TIPS AND TOPICS TO CONSIDER BEFORE HITTING THE SUMMER FESTIVAL CIRCUIT…Check your ticket and the festival’s website to know what you specifically need to do and not do at an event. Knowing where you stand will help you have a better day.

Remember that WA summers are hot. We all know that skin cancer kills a lot of Australians, so take the necessary precautions. Slip, Slop, Slap – in other words.

Make sure you have enough cash on you for the whole day. A lot of festivals have ATM facilities on site, but some don’t.

Let people know where you are. Use your mobile phone to keep in touch with your friends, and make sure you all know where each other are.

Stay hydrated. Being out in the sun is not just a danger to your skin… dehydration will set in fast, and can cause all sorts of problems, so drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Eat plenty of food. Same as with being dehydrated, being hungry can cause you to lose energy and stamina which, in the WA sun, can lead to a stack of different problems.

Be cool to other punters. Everyone wants to have a good time, and that depends on everyone treating one another, the venue, the acts, and so on, with respect. Don’t put yourself or anyone else in danger. Stuff like crowd-surfing and stage-diving is outdated and lame. All it does is get people hurt and disrespects the bands.

Don’t be disrespectful towards the venue and the staff. People who work at festivals do so for you. They’d much rather be having fun like everyone else, but someone has to run things, so respect the fact they are making a sacrifice for you.

Put your rubbish in a bin. Some poor bugger has to clean up after you, don’t make their job harder than it has to be.

Respect the bands! They’re up there giving it their all to entertain people, and that is very cool. If you don’t like a band, don’t watch them. Heckling, throwing stuff… these things just show people you’re an arse, so don’t do it.

Don’t take opened containers. Most festivals are clear on this. Check the rules on your ticket and the website, but know in advance that, chances are, you won’t be allowed to take opened containers into a festival.

Find out where everything is: food and drink stalls, emergency medical tents, and so on. It’s better to know than to be in a panic, so check your festival map, get a lay of the land, and you’ll be in good stead no matter what. Leave your belongings unattended. It doesn’t matter if it’s your bag or your drink… keep your eye on your stuff at all times. Plain and simple.
