FADE IN:

EXT. GERMAN VILLAGE (1934) -- CHRISTMAS EVE -- DARK

Heavy snow is falling out of a deep gray sky. The churchlooms high above the houses of Lüdenhausen on a rathersteep hill. The adjacent cemetery is old, the snow coveredhead stones are crooked with age.

The village itself looks rather desolate, the small timberframe houses mainly built in the 15 th and 16 th century, aresomewhat neglected. We see a poor area.

The village is quiet under the thick blanket of never-ending snow. We HEAR a thin metallic sound coming from thechurch's steeple, barely reaching the ground. It rings sixtimes. From within the church we HEAR muffled singing andorgan music.

This is the smallest of all rooms, barely two by two and ahalf meters. Along the inner wall there is an old-fashionedceramic wood stove with many doors.

Beside it we see a washstand with a white metal bowl andsoap dish, topped by a small dull mirror with a littleglass shelf underneath it. Here we find the family’s comb, some shaving utensils and toothbrushes leaning in a waterglass.

Along the opposite wall stands a table with a chair at eachof its narrow sides. A light blue glass lamp hanging fromthe low ceiling illuminates the scene.

The rings of the iron stove top are red with heat. A darkiron pot is steaming and so is the small bronze kettle. Thebiggest stove door is leaning open, revealing a cast ironbaking dish containing the goose and vegetables.

ANNEMmmm. Hurry up, I’m hungry. Areyou hungry also?
