Trinity Grammar Invitation Swimming Carnival
27 Wyvern boys attended the Trinity Invitational
Swimming Carnival in what would be the final opportunity to swim competitively in 2017. It would
also be the last chance to cheer on some
outstanding Year 6 swimmers before they leave to
the senior school. Daniel Johnson, Sebastian
Parhash, Jayden Stanton-Keir, Matthew Torrible,
Lucas Pollard and Oscar Martins have all been
wonderful contributors to Wyvern’s swimming teams
over the years, and we were excited to see them
swim their hearts out once more.
The carnival included schools from Kings, Scots,
Sydney Grammar, Trinity and St Pius, with boys
competing in A/B/C/D divisions. Wyvern
representatives in the individual medley events took
to the blocks to get the program underway. Orlando
Mina 5th swam well in the junior event, followed by
Sebastian Parhash 3rd and Lucas Pollard 7th in the
senior race.
Newington’s youngest competitors were at the
carnival, with many representatives from the 8 years
age group competing at an inter-school carnival for
the first time. Matthew Alvarez 2nd, Remi Jacobe 5th,
Lionel Falk-Brown 3rd and Aleksander Barlin 4th all
competed strongly in the freestyle event. Rhys
Howard Jones 5th and Barlin 3rd backed it up in the
breaststroke. Alvarez 2nd and Barlin 3rd were back in
the water for the backstroke, before Falk-Brown 3rd
and Barlin 3rd finished off the individual events in
butterfly. Alvarez, Falk-Brown, Jacobe and Barlin
then came together for the freestyle relay and
finished a close 3rd to receive a sought after green
ribbon.
The U/9’s freestylers also started nicely with Finn
Cathcart 5th, James Hoskins 3rd, Sam Rudd 4th and
Charlie Appleyard 6th. Cathcart 7th and Appleyard 6th
fought hard in the breastroke, before Mitchell Smit
6th and Hoskins 3rd did the same in the backstroke.
Rudd 3rd and Peter Farah 4th swam great races in
the butterfly event to inspire the relay of Hoskins,
Cathcart, Appleyard and Rudd. The relay team
finished 4th to just miss a placing.
Wyvern’s U/10 division were competitive all day, the
standard set early with the freestyle event. Here
Sam Chittendon 3rd, Liam West 3rd, Orlando Mina 4th
and Joel Zipeure 4th showed they meant business
with great efforts. West 6th and Mina 4th tried
valiantly in the breaststroke, before Mina 5th and
Zipeure 5th just missed placing’s in the backstroke.
Mina 3rd and Zipeure 5th continued their extensive
programme in the junior 100m free. West returned
in the A butterfly swimming a courageous 3rd, before
returning in the freestyle relay along with Mina,
Chittendon and Zipeure to come in 2nd. The same
relay team also finished a super 3rd in the medley
relay with an inspiring effort.
Charlie Roberts 4th and Oscar Neale 8th began the U/11 freestyle followed by Toby Torrible 5th, Daniel
Johnson 4th and Lewis Saupin 2nd. Johnson 4th,
Callan Rixom 6th and Saupin 3rd continued the
programme with swims in the breastroke event.
Sebastian Pidcock 7th and Saupin 3rd did well in the
backstroke, before Rixom 5th, Torrible 3rd and
Saupin 3rd swam big races in the butterfly event.
Saupin stamped his potential with a tremendous 3rd
in the senior 100m freestyle A division, before
helping the relay team including Roberts, Johnson
and Torrible to come home in 4th place.
Matthew Torrible 2nd, Jaydan Stanton-Keir 2nd,
Sebastian Parhash 2nd and Lucas Pollard 4th started
the carnival in great form, spurred on by the fact
that this would be their last carnival under the
Wyvern banner. Parhash 4th and Oscar Martins 5th
tried hard in the breastroke, with Pollard 2nd and
Parhash 3rd continued the group’s success in the
backstroke. Parhash showed no signs of stopping in the senior 100m freestyle B division with another 3rd
placing. Perhaps the best individual performances
of the day from Wyvern came in the butterfly event,
with Parhash 1st and Stanton-Keir 2nd in the B event
followed by Pollard 2nd in the A’s. Parhash, Martins,
Pollard and Saupin came together in the senior
medley for an outstanding 2nd, before the day was
finished off with Torrible, Parhash, Stanton-Keir and
Pollard racing hard to come in 3rd in the 12 year
freestlye relay.
The Wyvern team were very supportive of one
another and thankful for the opportunity to compete
during Term 4. We look forward to unearthing our
2018 swim team in a few months, as well as
wishing our Y6 boys departing the very best of luck
at the senior swimming carnivals.
