Tip Top Butchers unveiled a 203kW rooftop solar power system at the company’s Laverton North facility recently. The solar installation, one of the largest rooftop solar arrays in Australia, uses 780 LG Electronics rooftop solar panels with Tigo Optimizers.

Established in 1965, Tip Top Butchers is recognised as one of the leading wholesale butchers in the country, delivering high quality products and services at competitive prices. The modern Raymond Road facility is the culmination of 45 years of dedicated family input, having started with one butcher shop in Lygon Street Carlton.

Joint CEO’s Paul and Carlo, who along with other members of the De Bortoli family have grown the original ‘local butcher shop’ to a state of the art, 5500 square metre meat processing facility. Committed to incorporating environmentally sustainable practices into the core business plan and management processes, the gentlemen commented “We want the facility to reflect the feelings of home rather than just a cold, impersonal environment”.

Installed over an eight week period, the final system was switched on by Paul and Carlo on 4 December 2013 and was officially launched on 13 February 2014 by the Honourable Ryan Smith MP in the presence of the Mayor of Wyndham, Cr Bob Fairclough and in front of excited Tip Top Butchers’ staff. The

system will produce enough solar electricity to power 50 residential homes for decades to come.

The system uses LG Electronics latest generation, high efficiency Mono X 260 panels with Tigo Energy DUAL MAX 2ES50 DE optimizers. This innovative technology partnership will allow Tip Top Butchers to monitor the performance of every single LG solar panel via the Tigo optimizers and thereby identify any potential system performance issue immediately.

The project, which included replacement of factory lighting with the latest in LED technology, was partly funded via the Clean Technology Food and Foundries Investment Program and will offset over 515 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, the equivalent of taking 130 cars off the road each year. It is expected the solar system will slash electricity bills at the Tip Top Butchers facility by 31.2%.

With 80 employees, it is not uncommon to see patriarch, Rino, the founder back in 1965, on the plant floor at 3.30am with his sleeves rolled up working side by side with the staff. Sons Paul and Carlo also encourage their children to work in the business during school holidays and at every opportunity afforded, with the three generations represented.

Did you know that between 2006 and 2011 more than 6,500 jobs were created within Wyndham City?

Or that the value of regional exports generated by the Wyndham economy is estimated at $4.624 billion? In an increasingly dynamic and competitive business environment, it is more important than ever for local businesses to understand what is happening around them.

Accordingly, Wyndham City is excited to share that we now have access to an online public-access economic profile of Wyndham City which provides up to date information about the nature of the local economy. This economic profile will be a valuable tool for researchers, investors, business and government alike and will support the Economic Development Unit in promoting our local economy and attracting investment. Data is displayed in a user-friendly format via graphs, tables and interactive maps together with easy to understand explanations and commentary for a general audience. In a simple and interactive way, the economic profile details industry contributions to employment, output, wages and salaries, exports, imports and value-added. It also provides valuable insights into the region’s workforce, highlights opportunities for import replacement, portrays trends in the local economy and captures the value of tourism for the local economy.

A GIS tool provides spatial context, and all maps, graphs, charts and text can be easily shared via social media and e-mail or exported as images, spread sheets and PDFs. From a local business perspective, we envisage that it will provide an economic evidence base for business planning decisions and policy development, supporting feasibility studies and funding applications. The data has also been translated into Chinese to better assist with marketing and relationship building on an international level. The economic profile is supplied by REMPLAN, a team of economists, demographers and software developers. REMPLAN, which stands for Regional Economic Modelling and Planning System, is used by councils, government departments and private businesses all across Australia.

Wyndham City’s public-access economic profile can be found at: www.economicprofile.com.au/wyndham

New Learning Centre

54

Deakin University and The Gordon have partnered to open an exciting new learning centre in Werribee.

From March, a range of certificates, diplomas and degrees in early childhood education, arts, science, business and industry skills will be delivered from the new Bridge Street facility. For example, you could study a Bachelor in Commerce, or begin with a Certificate IV in Accounting that could progress to a Diploma of Accounting and then onto the Bachelor, without leaving Werribee.

The unique Associate Degree of Arts, Business and Science is also a study option at the learning centre. It provides an alternative pathway for people who would like to study a Bachelor but may not fulfil the requirements to do so, such as not having an ATAR or other formal education experiences. Students complete a small number of practical subjects that raise reading, writing and research skills before moving onto studying units from a Bachelor’s Degree. Having completed the two-year Associate Degree, students may then enrol in a Bachelor’s Degree with up to 18 months credit for subjects they have already completed.

The new learning centre is fitted out with state-of-the-art technology to help make learning, easier and flexible. Delivering education options from Werribee will help residents across the western metropolitan area to access quality higher education.

Students may decide to commence a program in Werribee and/or in the ‘cloud’, and may transfer to one of Deakin’s campuses or continue their studies in the ‘cloud’.

Cloud learning is Deakin’s term for learning through the internet using highly visual, media-rich, interactive learning experiences through state-of-the-art and emerging technology, wherever Deakin students are located and at times that suit their busy lives, 24/7.

The new facility includes:• advanced teleworking infrastructure, including large

interactive screens and audio visual facilities; • conference and meeting facilities to enable the community,

Deakin staff and Deakin students to link with teaching and research opportunities across the world; and

• wireless ‘Deakin connect’ rooms and workstations where staff and students can work while charging their mobile devices.

Deakin works to support and strengthen the communities they work in and the partners they work with, and also offers the new facility for corporate and community use.

Deakin University is renowned for excellent teaching and innovative course delivery, a student-focussed culture and being accessible, helpful and friendly. The prestigious university ranking organisation Quacquarelli Symonds awarded Deakin University a 5-star rating in 2013. This ranking considers the university as world-class in a broad range of areas, with cutting-edge facilities, and is internationally renowned for its world-class innovation and teaching faculty.

The Werribee Learning Centre is at 9 Bridge Street in central Werribee, within easy walking distance of Werribee Station and buses.

Wyndham business leaders now have an opportunity to help their employees eat more healthy food at work. And it doesn’t cost a cent.

At least half or all residents in Wyndham are either overweight or obese. The Healthy Eating Advisory Service, led by Nutrition Australia Victorian Division, supports workplaces to introduce healthier food and drink options. The service is free to all workplaces, early childhood services, schools and hospitals in Wyndham.

Melissa Colosimo, Senior Project Officer at Nutrition Australia, oversees the Healthy Eating Advisory Service for workplaces and hospitals across Victoria:

“We can help employers with practical advice and support them to introduce healthier eating in their workplace”.

“If employers have vending machines, for example, we can talk to the vending machine suppliers directly about providing healthier options.”

Melissa recommends introducing any changes in a phased approach.

“If changes are introduced too quickly, people become resistant. It might be a case of first labelling all the foods in a vending machine as green, amber or red to raise awareness of the types of foods in the vending machines, then slowly reducing the red options”.

When Alfred Hospital’s vending machine contract was up for tender they updated the terms of the agreement to include a mandatory clause about healthy food and drinks. They also introduced a policy that all internal catering must provide only green and amber items.

In Wyndham, the Healthy Eating Advisory Service has been working with Wyndham City’s catering team and looking at a healthier range of food for staff and community functions. Steve Burgess, Customer Service Coordinator at Wyndham City, said that more healthy options like fruit and vegetable platters are proving popular and there is less demand for cakes.

“We’ve been working with the Healthy Eating Advisory Service and our own Healthy Communities team. It’s been a bit of a re-education or refocus for us about the kind of healthy food options we could provide and we are gradually making changes”, Steve said.

If workplaces do not have catering or vending machines, the

Healthy Eating Advisory Service can help in other ways.

“We can support employers with resources and ideas for healthy barbeques, fundraising and other food-related activities. Fundraising doesn’t have to be about just selling chocolate. I’ve seen some really good fundraising ideas that don’t even involve food, like sunscreen, greeting cards, plant seeds and lots of other things”.

Melissa said that they worked with a power station in regional Victoria where many of the staff were shift workers. With limited food options available on overnight shift, workers would order pizza which was paid for by the company.

“We discussed alternatives with the company, which included buying a freezer chest to store frozen meals that are healthier than pizza. We will be assessing the frozen meals that they are interested in offering their staff and identify the best options, taking into account that the workers do very physical work and require a decent-sized meal”, Melissa said.

Melissa said that sometimes people are surprised about some foods which they thought were healthier options.

“Ham is very popular in sandwiches but it is actually classified as amber because of its salt content, which often surprises people - whereas grilled chicken or reduced fat cheese are green choices.”

It’s certainly an exciting time for the Wyndham business community with a number of infrastructure developments and projects either completed or underway in the Williams Landing Town Centre.

the new town Centre is a major mixed-use development that will service the south western corridor of melbourne and provide jobs, shopping, entertainment and living opportunities.

2013 heralded the completion of the new $110 million train station and Palmers Road freeway interchange, as well as the recent opening of the 13,500 square metre masters home Improvement Store; the first for the City of Wyndham.

Construction has already commenced on stage 1 of the Williams landing shopping Centre development, which will offer 8,500 square metre’s of retail and commercial floor space including a Woolworths store, medical centre and approximately 20 specialty retail stores, expected to open in early 2015.

leasing for stage 1 of the shopping Centre has just kicked off with strong interest being shown in the location from national and local retailers. The centre will be the heart of the broader town Centre development and will be delivered over a number of stages.

nathan Blackburne, victorian state manager of Cedar Woods, believes that the site’s location makes it a logical choice for retailers and businesses looking for opportunities in an area that has a strong and growing residential population and easy access.

“the vision for Williams landing is coming to life in the Town Centre and in the residential neighbourhoods. Strong interest continues from families wanting to build premium homes in the suburb and from business people wanting to be involved in the Town Centre. Both elements are anchored by the superb transport infrastructure,” said Mr. Blackburne.

“We’re certainly excited to see the various elements of the projects starting to take shape with the aim of creating a special new town development for Melbourne.”

Wyndham City has committed $2 million over the next two years to tackle traffic congestion and transport issues in a bid to get Wyndham moving.

Over the past 10 years, Wyndham has grown from a small outer suburb of Melbourne, to an exciting City of 187,788 people. While arterial roads and public transport are the responsibility of the State Government, Wyndham City works closely with State and Federal government to advocate for key projects to cater for Wyndham’s growth.

Most recently, this has brought improvements to bus services in Point Cook, the construction of the new Williams Landing train station and the announcement of the Sneydes Road full diamond interchange to improve access to the Freeway from Point Cook.

As part of the new congestion campaign, Wyndham City will work with local residents and businesses to identify priorities, increase campaigning to address congestion, complete works on roads and paths Council is responsible

for, particularly to improve traffic flow, and develop studies and strategies for major improvements to transport infrastructure. Some of the projects that are likely to be included in the campaign are:• Planning studies to look at bridges and underpasses at

rail crossings in Wyndham’s west• Upgrades to sections of Leakes Road, Palmers Road and

Derrimut Road• Working with schools to improve congestion and support

people using a range of methods to take children to school.
