Hola,

This edition of the school news letter is an incredibly important one for our entire school community. In it you will find updates about COVID-19 and how our school has worked to ensure your children are safe and their learning has continued. It also contains critical information in regards to actions we can all take, as a school community, to ensure that our safe and wonderful learning environment continues to meet the needs of everyone at WPPS. Before I go into more detail I want to take a moment to acknowledge the truly amazing staff that work at WPPS. As you well know every day our school leaders, teachers, education support staff, community partners and volunteers work hard to provide a positive, safe and engaging learning environment for our students. They create engaging and appropriate learning experiences that ensure our students are literate and numerate learners. Over the past few weeks these amazing staff have not only continue to do this but have also provided stability, routines, and reassurance for our students that has helped them understand and deal with the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic. It has been a humbling experience to see how each and everyone of them have stepped up and provided for our school community. As a leadership team we have never felt more proud of their work and our school community.

A message for our students….

The last 7 days have been interesting and confusing with all the news and information about

Coronavirus.

We want you to know that you are safe, and we are doing everything we can to take care of

you.

We also need you to help out to keep us all healthy.

We are lucky. No one at our school or anyone in their family has the virus.

We are making some changes to try and keep us all healthy, like not having assemblies or having

big events like excursions. We will let you know if there are other things that change.

What we need you to do:

1. Keep washing your hands.

2. Let an adult know if a bathroom does not have soap for you to use.

3. Don’t damage or overuse the soap and dispensers, or toilet paper – leaving bathrooms in

good order is taking care of your friends who need them too.

4. If you don’t feel well at school, tell an adult and we will help.

5. Make sure you borrow books from the library, so you have something to read at home if we

need to close the school for a bit.

Pandemic

In other news…..

Our grade 5/6 students have begun the annual Inter School Sports Competition and have already seen some

great success against other schools. They have also represented our school with outstanding sportsmanship

and values of Respect, Responsibility and Safety.

Another highlight of this term has been the great success of our School Community Hub. Everyday something

is happening in the hub, both during school and after school. Activities such as fitness clubs, playgroups, and

health eating classes have been very popular and enjoyed by all that attended. Even more is planned for Term

2 and beyond, so stay tuned and watch this newsletter for what is happening.

Kind regards

A message for our parents…… The last 7 days may have been overwhelming for you with all the news and information about Coronavirus. We want you to know that our school is a safe and healthy place where we take the care of your children very seriously. We are doing everything we can to ensure your children are safe and most importantly still learning. We also need your help to keep our school and community healthy as we try to keep our school a Coronavirus free zone. We have made a number of changes such as no assemblies, family picnics, excursions, or parades. We have also hired additional school cleaner who’s responsibility is to constantly clean high use areas of the school including toilets, work surfaces and doors. While our school is not closing, we have begun preparing remote learning activities for our students in the event they become necessary. We will continue to let you know if there are other things we change.

What we need you to do:

1. Keep washing your hands and reminding your children to do the same.

2. Try to shield your children from an over saturation of media coverage. Reassure them that they are safe

and your family will be ok.

3. Let the school know if you or your children become ill (especially if you come to believe it might be

Coronavirus).

4. If your children do become ill please keep them at home and let them get better. Your family’s health is

our priority and we want to minimise the spread of illness around the school.

5. If you do keep your ill children at home please keep in touch and encourage them to do any remote

learning that we provide them.

6. If your children are not unwell please keep sending them to school as we want them here with us learning

as normal.

What’s happening in…

Reading?

We have been exploring how paying attention to the actions of characters and story events can help us to

make informed predictions about what might happen in the text. Good readers make predictions before,

during and, sometimes, after reading.

We have also been discussing the features of an effective summary and practising how to summarise texts

we’re reading. Summaries only include the most important information in a text. Being able to summarise,

indicates that we understand what we read.

Our new school diaries are being used to record our daily reading. Please support your child to bring their

diary to school every day, with their reading recorded and signed by a family member or carer who is older

than they are.

Writing?

We have continued to work on our engaging narratives that contain: sizzling starts, backfill, a series of

problems, character development and riveting resolutions. We have also revisited figurative language forms

like alliteration, personification, metaphors, similes, hyperboles and idioms and how to use them to enhance

our writing.

Maths?

Our earlier revision of whole number place value is helping us to read and understand the place value of

decimal numbers. We have also been exploring how to round whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000.

Inquiry?

Our question for Inquiry is… How is environmental change influenced by people and natural processes?

Currently, we are researching a natural disaster of our choice and will present this information to our classes

in various forms eg poster, PowerPoint, book, speech etc.

SWPBS?

What is a bystander / upstander? What is bullying? How can I use the Bully Busters website?

Page 5: Wyndham Park P.S. · 2020. 3. 20. · What we need you to do: 1. Keep washing your hands and reminding your children to do the same. 2. Try to shield your children from an over saturation

Foundation Learning Community

SWPBS

This week in SWPBS we have been learning about how to take action against bullying. Students have been learning how to use the Wheel of Action and how to be an upstander and help friends who are bullied.

Language Experience

This week Foundation students participated in a bubble blowing language experience. We all had fun with the goal of expanding our vocabulary. We had students discussing their bubbles using words such as “soapy” and “floating.”

Reading

In Reading we have been learning about pointing left to right and one

point for each word. We practised this in our buddy reading where

students partnered up and shared a book together.

Reminders

At the end of each school day it is important to see the

teacher before collecting your child so that the teacher is

aware of which students have been collected.

Note folders (zip bags) need to be brought to school each

day so that important notes and reading books can be safely

sent home.

1/2 LEARNING COMMUNITY! READING

Students continue to focus on their reading strategies this term. Every morning our classes dedicate the first 2 sessions to building these skills. Students now have their home readers coming home every day and are encouraged to

share and practise these skills with you and your extended family at home every night.

As we approach the cooler months and the current

health concerns in the community it’s important to be

reminding our students to be washing their hands,

before and after eating, after the toilet, and after they

have coughed or blown their nose. Encourage your

children to sing their favourite song or nursery rhyme

as they wash.

REMINDER

Students are encouraged to have their own water bottles to

drink from throughout the day in class. Please ensure they

are labelled with your child’s name.

Students are also encouraged to have a healthy snack for

first break each day. Like fresh fruit, yoghurt, cheese and

crackers.

COLOUR RUN REGISTRATIONS OPEN

Jump online and register for our colour run for our

major fundraiser this year. Any questions feel free to

ask your classroom teacher.

EAL News: Personal Pronouns

EAL students often struggle using pronouns correctly.

To help your children at home ask them questions about what they see and have them answer using the correct

pronouns.

For example:

What are we having for dinner? Where is your brother/sister?

Where is your reading book? Where are your shoes?

Try asking questions about these pictures; or have them ask you questions.

What is the girl in the green top doing? What colour is the guitar? What is Lucy holding?

Where do you think Paul and Jenni are going? Is the book big or small? What colour is Say’s hair?

Po Wet Say Paul & Jenni Carlos and Anna Ed Lucy

During Term 1, the Intervention/Extension Program has included:

• Levelled Literacy Intervention, which has focused on developing deeper

comprehension skills of beyond the text and about the text in the 1/2LC.

• Fine Motor to develop skills in colouring, folding paper, cutting using scissors

safely and correctly in the 1/2LC.

• Writing to develop constructing and sequencing sentences in the 1/2LC.

• Mathematics, which has focused on developing place value knowledge and

skills in the 3/4 and 5/6 LC

WPPS Kitchen Garden News

GROW HARVEST PREPARE SHARE

Garden Club Break 2 Mondays and Wednesdays

Corn Harvesting This week our dedicated volunteers helped harvest our corn crop. The plants all looked healthy but unfortunately the corn cobs had very little corn on them.

Cooking Corn Even though our harvest was not very plentiful we cooked what we had and really enjoyed munching on sweet buttery corn kernels. The verdict was a thumbs up for taste and that we should definitely have a go at growing corn again later this year but maybe try a different variety.

Up Next Next week we will continue to harvest our tomatoes. We had hoped to sell some of our juicy red produce, but have decided to make tomato sauce, bottle it and sell it later in the year.
