THE QUILTERS QUILLBoard Meeting March 1, 2012, 9:30 AM

Business Meeting March 8, 2012 10:00 AMVisit us at: www.twinriversquiltersguild.com

From the PresidentHi Members,

Congratulations to Sue Marra for winning a blue ribbon at the Mid Atlantic Quilt Show. Way to go Sue!

At the March business meeting, I introduced a project to help Relay for Life. It is a pattern entitled Jungle Walk "for a cause" It is a pattern designed by two women in Canada who make quilts for special needs. I received a nice e-mail from them giving us permission to make the “Jungle Walk” quilt for Relay for Life. Alvina has scheduled a workshop in May to get us started. More information is forthcoming.

It is a little early but we need someone to volunteer to chair the Day of Sharing in 1213. It is a fun day and we get to meet members from other guilds. If you are a new members and want to get involved, you may want to consider co-chairing with an older member (do not mean age) for this project.

Have a nice month and don't forget the library exhibit, on Saturday March 17, Lynn Gorges will be there to date quilts and we will be demonstrating our quilting skills. So come and help at the library even if you have not signed up to help, you are always welcome.

Penny

ReminderAll members must wear their official TRQG nametags to every meeting and activity or pay the price...$0.50 to the kitty. It is for safety reasons required by the church. The church personnel do not recognize any other nametags!

Vice President

Thanks for your warm reception for the triangle exchange. The talented members of the Program Committee, Chris Gillespie, Dorothy Najarian, Phyllis Prideaux and Nancy Degen, have amazing ideas and their energy is every bit as amazing. We are lucky to have them---if you agree, be sure to tell them. There are so many exciting projects from them and from members of the Guild coming up. Happy quilting!

Mystery Quilt: The final part of the mystery quilt is here in the newsletter. Can’t wait to see all the quilts. If you have questions, be sure to ask Nancy Degen. She’s at 249-1179 or [email protected]. The big show and tell for the mystery quilts will be at the June business meeting---in any stage of completion! Now if I can only catch up….

Triangle Surprise: The instructions for the triangle project are here in the newsletter. The Guild will purchase two of Edyta Sitar’s books so that you can see her projects if you don’t already own any. Her website is laundrybasketquilts.com. She has so many lovely ideas---and of course you can make any project you want with your triangles. The triangles are due no later than May 10 so the committee can sort and return them to you at the June meeting. What an easy way to get a wide variety of triangles for a quilt---and an easy way to sew them. If you have any questions, be sure to ask Phyllis.

Upcoming projects: The April business meeting program will be a presentation of a pattern called “Magic Borders”. I understand that Helen Williams introduced this originally and it’s so neat that Dorothy Najarian will demonstrate it so everyone can enjoy it.

On April 26, Nancy Degen will do a workshop on cathedral windows. It’s a special technique and a great opportunity to learn it for the first time or refresh your skills. The materials list will be in the April newsletter.

Charity Workshops: The third Thursday of each month is dedicated to charity quilts and projects. Each month is a one-time workshop and Kay Amsler coordinates the schedule. If you have a block or idea to share, be sure to contact her and sign up. March is a free sew day so be sure to bring whatever charity project you’re working on! On April 19, Mary Beth Seidenfield and Dot Gibson will demonstrate a lap robe pattern, which is easy and interesting. The materials list will be in the newsletter.

In May Penny Finney and Alvina Diello will host a workshop to make blocks for a raffle quilt for Relay for Life. Details to follow.

Jackie Hemeon Workshops: The participants in Jackie’s workshops had a great time working with the wool kits for the New Bern Bear and the Buttermilk Chicks. It was informative, relaxing and very enjoyable.

Page 3: Web viewShe has been quilting for 78 years, yes that’s right, 78 years. She also enjoys most crafts, especially knitting and beading. Sally still works full time!

2012 NC Quilt Symposium: Don’t forget the NC Quilt Symposium being held at Western Carolina University from June 7 to June 10. Classes begin on Friday. Information about the Symposium is at stitch ‘n chat. We also have a DVD with great information and pictures. Details can be found at www.smokymtnquilters.com.

General Information:All scheduled workshops will begin at 9:00 am. Going forward, there will be a sign up sheet for any scheduled workshop, whether professional or by a guild member. This should make the workshops go more smoothly. Thanks!

Marty Dzioba

AQSThe guild has purchased New York Beauty books. If you are interested in buying one, call me or see me at stitch n chat.Helen Williams –

CWSFor the April business meeting, please bring the following items: toilet paper, tampons and sanitary pads, deodorant/antiperspirant, gift cards (Walmart) and Kleenex.

Prior to the meeting, a representative told us 12 is the maximum number of adult women, not including children, that the shelter can accommodate. We thought it would be a nice gesture to do something for the ladies before Christmas, since the ladies in the shelter now will probably not be there in December.

As a project this month, we will make 12 tote bags for the women. Thus far, three members have volunteered. Two bags were shown at the business meeting. All bags must be completed by Thursday, March 29. We will stuff the tote bags and deliver them by Thursday, April 5. Each bag will be filled with personal items such as a loofah, mirror, scented soap, lotion, decorative ink pen, nail kit/nail file, hand sanitizer, toothbrush and toothpaste, washcloth and a small bag of assorted candies. The ladies receiving these bags will have a personal gift that they can reuse to carry items of clothing, etc.

At the business meeting, guild members donated $169.42 for the Angel Fund. Thank you very much. We will use part of the money to purchase the gift items. The remainder of the money will be deposited. We will give a report, receipts and deposit statement to the board members, on Thursday April 5 at the board meeting.

"For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me." Matthew 25:35, 36 (NKJV)

God bless you, Betty Williams and Chantal Huestis

We fortunately mailed no quilts in January and February.  We will continue to make blocks and quilts for future months.  Please see me if you need a copy of the instructions. Some members have block kits that I made up and passed out that have gotten lost somewhere in their quilting rooms.  Please finish them when you find them or bring them back for someone else to work on.  There are also some completed blocks that were taken home to make a quilt top.  I know that sometimes there just isn't as much time available to get things done.  Thank you everyone for all your support. Mary Beth Seidenfield

RAFFLE QUILTVolunteers are needed for the Farmers Market for the following dates: April 14, April 28, May 12 and May 26. Need two volunteers 8-11 AM and 11AM-2PM each date. Please call Claudia Hughes 617-0533 to schedule – Remember you can sell YOUR tickets there!!!

Envelopes have been prepared for all guild members. Each member should take an envelope with 24 tickets and a picture of the quilt. Expenses have increased for the quilt show and we need everyone to help by selling tickets or purchasing them. If you sign up to help with the Farmers Market or any other activity where we are selling tickets for the quilt, you may sell your envelope of tickets first. An incentive for selling more than one envelope (24) of tickets is that the top seller will receive a certificate to redeem at the quilt guild show in October at the Twice Around Treasures booth! Good luck to all.

Thanks to all members for participating - Naomi Durkee

Welcome Ladies!

Note: I was approached Thursday about missing parts to the I.D. Kit they received. I’m so sorry that happened. If I am informed of this right away, I am more than happy to correct the situation and replace the kit with a new one. I always have spare I.D. kits with me. I don’t want any new member to feel that they can’t come to me directly to correct this situation. As chair volunteers we all hope to do the best job we can, but sometimes things just happen and when they do, I feel very badly about it.

CHARITY SEW DAY - 3rd Thursday of each month Community Service Project, Thursday, April 19We will be working on a very simple, quick together scrap quilt top. It would be a good quilt for a child as well as a nursing home resident. I found the quilt on craftsy.com, as well as a pattern for the block. The block is Arkansas Crossroads. Just remember we will be doing the blocks in a different size. 4 inch and 7 1/2 inch. Each block uses, 12 – 4-inch squares and 2 - 7 1/2 inch light squares. The quilt I brought to the business meeting contained 12 blocks.Dorthy Gibson and I will bring our supply of 4 inch squares so don't worry if you don't have a variety. You can pick addition squares from our collection. Remember, scrap quilts are a great way to use some of your (and my) uglies. Perhaps you can also trade with each other.

Page 8: Web viewShe has been quilting for 78 years, yes that’s right, 78 years. She also enjoys most crafts, especially knitting and beading. Sally still works full time!

We will also have available some batting, backs and some lights. You should be able to complete most of your top before you leave and have fun with other quilters. Any questions? Call or e-mail me, I'm in our directory.

TRIANGLE SURPRISE INSTRUCTIONSSign up to make and exchange 200 or more 2” finished half square triangles with other guild members.

Page 12: Web viewShe has been quilting for 78 years, yes that’s right, 78 years. She also enjoys most crafts, especially knitting and beading. Sally still works full time!

You may certainly make more than 200 if you’d like! For the sake of consistency, we will make the triangles using Laundry Basket Quilts 2” triangle exchange paper. You’ll make your triangles and cut them apart, but not take the paper off. LEAVE THE PAPER ON THE FABRIC TRIANGLE.

All About Quilting in Jacksonville will have Cinnamon Sticks with two fabric strips and the paper ready to sew. You may purchase these, or make up your own, but PLEASE use the same paper we are using. We would LOVE for you to purchase fabric Cinnamon Sticks from AAQ, but you are also free to dig into your stash, as long as the fabrics are QUILT SHOP QUALITY. PLEASE be sure to remove the selvage from the fabric edges. We reserve the right to return any triangles that won’t work for the exchange.

You may make as many half square triangles as you want and you will bring them to Stitch’n’Chat or TRQG meetings and turn them in to a Program Member (Marty Dzioba, Chris Gillespie, Dorothy Najarian, Nancy Degan, or Phyllis Prideaux. When you drop them off, you’ll bring the stitched triangles (WITH THE PAPER STILL ON) in a Ziploc bag with your name, address and number of triangles in it. Please put only a “group” of the same 28 half square triangles in each bag. The last day to turn in bags of triangles to be exchanged will be Thursday, May 10, 2012 at the TRQG Business Meeting. We will return your variety of triangles to you at the June 14, 2012 Business Meeting. For every triangle you turn in, you will receive one in return, so if you make 300 half square triangles, you will receive 300 in a variety of fabrics. . We are planning to have “Triangle Stitch’n’Chats” during the summer where we can meet and make Triangle Surprise Quilts. Please be on the look-out for wonderful quilts using lots of half square triangles.

AAQ will be selling packages of the LBQ triangle paper and also Edyta Sitar’s book “Friendship Triangles” Also, you may order them at www.LaundryBasketQuilts.com.

DIRECTIONS:

Place one piece of dark fabric 6 ½” x 21” face up; then one piece of light fabric 6 ½” x 21” face down, being sure you have a good contrast between dark and light. You may use any color you like, prints, stripes, solids, Batiks, juvenile prints, or “Why did I ever buy that fabric??”. The LIGHTS may be white, cream, tan or pastels with good contrast between the light and dark fabrics. BUT, please use different fabrics for each “group” of 28 half square triangles AND QUILT SHOP QUALITY fabric only..

Place LBQ paper on top

Pin on solid lines. DO NOT pin over dashed lines.

Stitch very carefully on dashed line; use a sharp 80/12 needle and good cotton thread. Shorten your stitch length to allow easier removal of the paper; press the completed block of stitched triangles before cutting them apart to set stitches. TIP: use needle down function to allow easy turning at corners.

Using rotary cutter, cut on solid lines

Results = 28 PERFECT half square triangles!! Place triangles in plastic sandwich bag with name, address & number of blocks (should always be 28). Bring to Stitch’n’Chat or TRQG meeting.

When you receive your SURPRISE variety of pieced triangle: With paper still attached, press the half square triangle blocks open. The seam allowance should go toward the dark fabric. Trim “bunny ears”
