. . .is called “Africa in miniature” because of its great cultural, ethnic & geographic diversity. It is located on the West Coast of Central Africa. More than 240 languages are spoken. The people born into each language group share a rich history, with age-old customs, beliefs and cultural activities that distinguish them from other peoples.

Kengmo has visited many of Cameroon’s distinct com-munities, working with the elders to help preserve Cameroon’s dances, music & stories. This is especially important because Cameroon and Africa are constantly changing under the influence of the Western colonization & its economic dominance.

Kengmo is convinced that the West would benefit from respecting Africa’s traditions and from learning more about them, so he works full-time to preserve and share Africa’s rich heritage.

Involving his audience, Kengmo makes Central African culture come alive through his compelling traditional garbs, stories, percussion & dance. Bringing a variety of authentic traditional instruments from his homeland Cameroon, Kengmo weaves history, art, philosophy & wisdom at the backdrop of his energetic presentation.

Kengmo challenges his aud-iences to examine their values & ideas through the message of res-pect, peace, unconditional love and unity. Throughout his lively sharing, Kengmo creates a continuous sense of anticipation, excitement and curiosity. Towards the end, members of the audience play instruments, chant & dance together.

Students explore the com-position and history of Central African music and the tech-niques needed to play each musical instrument. Using a process passed on to him by his elders, Kengmo helps part-icipants use authentic musical instruments & rhythms as tools for self healing, nourishment and empowerment.

Dance depicts daily life in Central Africa (farming, life-style, ritual and celebration). Students learn how to use the information that constitutes the root of traditional dances. They learn Central African dance steps with their meanings, and how to use it in their own ways to express thoughts and feelings.

Kengmo broadens participant’s perspectives of the arts by exposing them to the authentic Central African art forms: the Music, Stories & Dance of daily life. Through performance, positive messages from the heart, & anecdotes, participants gain an understanding of the traditional art as a reflection of self, community, and education.

Kengmo helps participants open up in ways so that they can experience more joy, express thoughts, feelings & stimulate creativity. They discover how traditional music & dance depicts daily tasks integral to the sustenance of the community, & how it dramatizes stories & proverbs that pass on wisdom through the ages.

Kengmo weaves in explanations that help relate the foreign & unfamiliar to American ways. This assists in banishing stereotypes of Africa and imparts a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity. Teachers and students find the seeds of traditional wisdom spread among them and their respect for self and others reinforced.
